Tribal Hippie Underground Zone aka the THUGZ

Put on your dancin’ shoes, open your ears and join the party. Sonoma County’s legendary psychedelic dance band, “Tribal Hippie UnderGround Zone” (aka the Thugz) is sure to provide big fun for all with their unique brand of cosmic rock. Over the past decade this multi-faceted band has delighted music fans of all ages and tastes.

Rock, blues, country, jazz, psychedelic and various world music styles blend together at a Thugz show to bring the positive vibes of the ‘60’s into the 21st century. Informed by the music of the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Beatles, Miles Davis and others the Thugz’ original songs and cosmic jams help to create a joyous, communal spirit between band and audience.

The band has a vast repertoire that includes many Dead tunes from all eras as well as interesting originals and covers. The group strives to combine traditional elements with new and creative material; more of a celebration and less of a replication of the Grateful Dead. If you are a Deadhead or music lover in general you will enjoy the Thugz’ mixture of classic arrangements and exploratory jams.

A plethora of fine musicians have sat in with the Thugz during their musical excursions including David Gans, Barry Sless, Robin Sylvester, Niina Gerber, Zac Brown, and others.

No two “tribal hippie underground zone” shows are exactly the same but the spirit and love of music making are always present.

DeVotchka @ Boulder Theater | 10/29 & 30

DeVotchKa is a four piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble that fuses Romani, Greek, Slavic and Bolero music with American punk and folk roots.

The quartet is made up of Nick Urata, who sings and plays theremin, guitar, bouzouki, piano, and trumpet; Tom Hagerman, who plays violin, accordion, and piano; Jeanie Schroder, who sings and plays sousaphone and double bass; and Shawn King, who plays percussion and trumpet.

Numerous nationwide tours in support of self released records earned the band an underground following. Their song How It Ends was featured on the trailer for the film Everything Is Illuminated, introducing the band to a widening audience. Their performance at the 2006 Bonnaroo music festival was considered a breakout event. In between tours, the band was picked by first time film directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris to score Little Miss Sunshine, a 2006 film that would go on to garner four Academy Award nominations. DeVotchKa composed and performed the majority of the music for the film's soundtrack and were nominated for a 2006 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack.

DeVotchKa's latest studio album, A Mad & Faithful Telling, was released on March 18, 2008. DeVotchKa is currently doing a worldwide tour in support of the album's release.

Since its debut performance on Valentine's Day 2009, the band has played numerous shows including sharing the stage with the likes of Amazing Baby, Pink Mountaintops, Wovenhand and The Entrance Band.

With songs as seductively venomous as its name suggests, Snake Rattle Rattle Snake began in October 2008 when veterans of the underground music scene in Denver decided to pursue a mutual interest in darkly atmospheric music with a grounding in dance rhythms. More Info / Buy Tickets

Leron Thomas Group
Leon Thomas, trumpet & vocals; Mike Moreno, guitar; Mike Severson, guitar; TBA, drums; TBA, bass

Leron Thomas (originally from Houston, Texas) graduated from NYC’s New School in 2003, known for his identifiable personal sound on the trumpet and his cleverly-written jazz compositions. Leron has played with Billy Harper, Bobby Watson, Roy Hargrove, Lauren Hill, Mos Def, and Bilal, amongst many others. He has performed his material with bands throughout Manhattan, staying focused on developing as a jazz composer and trumpet player but grew tired of the politics and lack of quality music within the New York jazz scene. With a love of music of all genres, alongside the scene’s general lack of support, Leron found ways to liberate himself through a natural, fluid progression into writing and performing what would be known as his ‘other’ music. This genre-less music incorporated jazz, rock, pop, country, electro-pop, and blues. Leron wrote these compositions and played his individual personal tone through his trumpet, while his unique vocals emphasized the diverse sound. His crossover talents were recognized by many, including the New York Times, gaining a favorable review and consistent support. Leron continues to stay true to his art and the objective of bringing real music to the people, with the recent independently-released Improvsensation.

As recently described by All About Jazz, “Search’s sound and vibe conveys and signals an air of maturity that's rather uncanny for such a young band. The artists project a distinct sound into these largely, memorable and astutely engineered compositions, teeming with gobs of depth and snaking movements.” Their original compositions, based on motifs, characters, and organic thought, create new worlds of color, depth, tangibility, and exhilaration. The music becomes a theater of sound, taking audiences on a trip of the imagination across time and space, where anything is not only possible, but likely.

Clarino: Thomas Heberer, quarter-tone trumpet; Joachim Badenhorst, clarinets

Clarino is the duet of quarter-tone trumpeter Thomas Heberer and clarinetist Joachim Badenhorst. The duet's name refers to the close association of the two instruments. The clarinet (literally translated: "little clarino") took on the high trumpet (a.k.a. clarino) parts in baroque music after the art of the clarino died out in the 19th century. Additionally, the rediscovered clarino techniques influence the trumpet embouchure advocated by Thomas. Check out his essay on trumpet mechanics on his website www.thomasheberer.com.

Sharing the same musical vision, Thomas and Joachim have absorbed the traditions of jazz, improvised, and contemporary classical music resulting in personal instrumental styles that incorporate both traditional and extended techniques like circular breathing, micro-tonality, and multiphonics.

Thomas Heberer, born 1965 in Germany, living in NYC since 2008, winner of numerous awards, has been at the forefront of creative improvised music for the last 20 years. Having worked with nearly everybody in the field, he is probably best known for his work with Misha Mengelberg's ICP, Alexander von Schlippenbach, and bassist Dieter Manderscheid.

Joachim Badenhorst, born 1981 in Belgium, divides his time between New York and Belgium. He is active in numerous projects as a co-leader: Mogil (Iceland), Red Rocket (Ireland), Rawfishboys (France), Ploug/Pettersen/Badenhorst (Denmark), and Ryan Blotnick Group (New York). Joachim is a member of the Han Bennink trio.

Underground Heavyweight Bassnectar On Tour This Spring

photo by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

Bassnectar, voted San Francisco's "number one DJ" three years in a row, is on tour this spring bringing his original and memorizing mixes, big bass drops and contagious energy to venues and clubs across the country.  The tour includes first time stops in Asheville, Birmingham and others as well as returning performances at the Miami Winter Music Conference.  Bassnectar has been featured in ALARM, BMP, DJ MAGAZINE, DJ TIMES, HARP, REMIX, URB, XLR8R and many others, and is touring in support of his acclaimed album, Underground Communication, released on OM Records in Spring 2007.

Here's what critics are saying:

"a vibrant concoction of hip-hop, glitch and jungle. One precaution about this LP: Make sure you have the speakers to do it justice." - Remix

"Zigzagging bass flutters, acid techno, hip-hop, and ambient breakbeats tantamount to pulsating club bangers." - URB

Voted "Best DJ" by Nitevibe.com and SF Bay Guardian, Bassnectar's music is forging new paths in the electronic music world, the Burning Man scene, underground hip hop circles, and beyond. The brainchild of Lorin Ashton, Bassnectar is an experimentally collaborative music project, but it's also a platform for social change and political awareness. For Bassnectar's most recent release, Underground Communication (Om Records/May 8, 2007), Bassnectar takes another step forward in his genre-bending blend of musical styles and emotions, combining the visceral melodic presence of modern listening music, with the force and volume of sound system dance floor devastation. The new record is an exploration of hip-hop culture, featuring scores of MCs and rhythmic poetics mashed atop a heavy, driving  range of tempo and, of course, those signature throbbing bass lines. Rooted firmly in political conviction and philosophical intention, and backed by a rabid fan base and dedicated following, Underground Communication sets a new standard for the possibilities of merging music, art, new media and social activism.

- for the Grateful Web

With "the largest cult following of any DJ in San Francisco" and voted "Best DJ" by Nitevibe.com and SF Bay Guardian , Bassnectar's music is forging new paths in the electronic music world, the Burning Man scene, underground hip hop circles, and beyond. Playing at nearly one-hundred and fifty shows a year, to thousands of different people a month; from national festivals to sold-out theaters to overcrowded clubs and warehouses to tight and tiny bars and venues, Bassnectar's enormous popularity reflects the current hunger for raw substance in modern music and a desire for social integrity within the music scene. The brainchild of Lorin Ashton, Bassnectar is an experimentally collaborative music project, but it's also a platform for social change and political awareness. It's stylistically specific, yet it's an eclectic, full spectrum adventure.

Ten years into a strong underground career, 2005 saw the debut of Bassnectar's double-disc collection entitled Mesmerizing The Ultra , described as "a kaleidoscopically brilliant funk conception" by All Music Guide [Amazon.com]. Rooted firmly in political conviction and philosophical intention, and backed by a rabid fan base and dedicated following, Underground Communication sets a new standard for the possibilities of merging music, art, new media and social activism.

Bassnectar's live shows are a modern day social mosh pit of hippies, ex-ravers, hipsters, dub reggae heads, Dead-heads, Burning Man freaks, artists, fashion experimentalists, social activists, and hip-hop enthusiasts, all packed into one steamy room of grinding, orgiastic expression and musical experimentation.

Bassnectar is on tour this spring in support of Underground Communication , including select shows with percussive groovers Zilla and visionary puppeteers the Funginears.  Bassnectar's current list of confirmed shows is as follows:
