Electra's "Coming To Get You!" + SXSW Dates

Leading up to their highly anticipated SXSW shows and East Coast performances, Electra is proud to release the new video for their frenetic ska-rock ’n’ roll stomp “Coming to Get You!” Watch the video HERE. The dark, left-field video catches one of the band’s performances as a series of freaks, geeks, and psychos sabotage the video. The video was directed by Roy Raz, whose previous video for The Irrepressibles “In This Shirt” received international acclaim.

With a reputation for their high-energy performances and unique rock 'n'roll blend, Tel Aviv’s Electra is finally making the jump stateside for SXSW. After the festival, the band will follow up their SXSW gigs with a series of dates in New York in late March, as well as a show in Washington, DC at the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center.

Electra is currently signed to Anova Music – Tel Aviv’s leading record company – and their first two singles “Coming to Get You!” and “Dawn of Summer”were instant radio hits. Their songs combine gritty, catchy melodies and garage rock swagger. They channel influences from Rockabilly grooves and ’60s soul to ’80s The Cars type music in the vane of The Clash and Buzzcocks. They’re quickly becoming one of the most provocative acts in the country and around the world. And in recent months, the band has played with other likeminded acts, including The Fall and Art Brut.

Agnes Obel To Make North American Debut at SXSW

Danish songwriter/composer Agnes Obel will be making her North American debut next week in Austin at SXSW. Agnes will play three special shows plus her US radio performance debut on KCRW. The live session with KCRW will air on Saturday, March 19 at 4:00pm EST / 3:00pm CST. After gracing stages in Austin, Agnes will make her way to New York City for a special one-night only performance at Rockwood Music Hall on Tuesday, March 22.

Agnes has made waves overseas since releasing her debut album Philharmonics on Play It Again Sam. PIAS America is proud to release the album in North America on April 12. The album was hailed by critics who have compared Agnes to artists such as PJ Harvey, Joanna Newson and even Roy Orbison. Philharmonics topped the charts in her native Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium and in France, where it was certified Gold on January 21, which just so happens to be St. Agnes Day.

Listening to Philharmonics, it’s easy to see what’s made Agnes such a success. Stripped down and centered around her evocative voice, Philharmonics is a striking work. Opening with the haunting instrumental of “Falling, Catching,” the song melds into the plaintive ballad “Riverside, which was recently featured on ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy.” Perez Hilton featured “Riverside” on his site, calling it “exquisite” and saying it “hits our sweet spot.” The lilting harp-based tracks like “Just So” and “Beast” rub shoulders with the poignant melodies of “Avenue.” Brother Sparrowbegins as a mournful elegy that morphs halfway through the song into an upbeat bit of chamber folk. Agnes covers John Cale on “Close Watch,” which Chris Douridas from KCRW said, “triumphs over the original but makes you ever so grateful all over again for Cale’s lyrical brilliance.” (Download “Close Watch” here on Facebook.) From start to finish, the album is as beautiful as it is sparse.

Jon Dee Graham + Freedy Johnston + Susan Cowsill = Hobart Brothers

Jon Dee Graham, Freedy Johnston and Susan Cowsill have united to form the Hobart Brothers & Lil’ Sis Hobart. The trio, backed by drummer Russ Broussard and bassist Andrew Duplantis, will make their live debut during SXSW week in a series of Austin appearances.

Susan, Jon Dee and Freedy found themselves huddled at last year’s SXSW to write a couple of songs reflecting on their early days washing dishes for a living, which all three had done (joining the ranks of such former dish-washing rock legends as Alex Chilton). The band name refers to the commercial dishwasher known to all aspiring songwriters.

The three members quickly realized that the Hobart Brothers was a good outlet in which to write songs about things they otherwise would not. From the initial summit came a collection of songs of joy and heartbreak that range from the sublime to the silly. Cowsill’s vocals, described by Rolling Stone as “a supple survivor’s alto,” blend beautifully with the roughhewn quality of Jon’s voice and Freedy’s sad tenor.

In May 2010 they recorded a CD, At Least We Have Each Other, at Top Hat Studios in Austin. The recording was cut in the lounge and kitchen area of the studio. The band was already rehearsing there, so engineer John Harvey set up the mikes around them and started recording. The finished album provides a rare glimpse of what three very unique and talented artists might come up with when they think no one else is listening. While the songs were recorded live with one or two takes, there is a resonant honesty and completeness to them. This CD is scheduled for release later in 2011....but only with the help from their friends and fans.

The Hobart Brothers will self-fund the release of At Least We Have Each Other through a creative kickstarter.com campaign. The money raised will pay for production, promotion, publicists, publicity materials, artwork and more. To learn more about the campaign, which has a goal of raising $10,000, and the rewards received for donating to the project, click here.

About the Hobart Brothers & Lil’ Sis Hobart:

Jon Dee Graham was named Austin Musician of the Year during SXSW in 2006. He was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame three times: as a solo artist in 2000, again in 2008 as a member of the Skunks,  and again in 2009 as a member of the True Believers. Graham has released seven albums and was the subject of a DVD called Big Sweet Life: The Songs of Jon Dee Graham. In August 2008, Graham underwent emergency surgery after being injured in a one-car accident. His current album is aptly titled It’s Not As Bad As It Looks.

The New Yorker cited Freedy Johnston’s “finely wrought, melancholy character studies” as one of the calling cards of last year’s critically acclaimed Rain on the City album, his twelfth. According to SPIN, “Johnston’s characters always make a deep impression.” He has been recording since 1990’s debut The Trouble Tree on Bar/None. In 1994 he hit with “Bad Reputation” from his Elektra album This Perfect World, and Rolling Stone named him “Songwriter of the Year.”

Susan Cowsill was born into show business as a member of the Cowsills, who hit with “The Rain, The Park & Other Things” and “Hair” in the late ’60s. In the ’90s, she joined forces with Peter Holsapple and Vicki Peterson to form the Continental Drifters, and migrated from Los Angeles to New Orleans. In 2005 she released her first solo album, Just Believe It, concurrent with losing her brother Barry and her house to Hurricane Katrina. Her current album Lighthouse, calledan earthy, often crunchy folk-pop gem” by Rolling Stone, reflects upon these experiences and features guest spots from Peterson, Jackson Browne, and former Cowsills session player Waddy Wachtel.

The Albertans' "New Age" Out Today

The Albertans, a quintet of Joel Bravo, Ian Everall, Curtis McLean, Krystin Monaghan, and Alison Yip, formed in Vancouver, British Columbia, defects from Alberta, Saskatchewan and the U.S. They met as a collective, and piled into a propane-fueled, converted short bus to tour down to San Diego and back. They toured this way for the next two years, unglamorously, crossing the continent to record in New York, playing shows with bands they didn't know, for people that didn't know them. They traveled 50,000 miles, hopped borders, broke down, and slept on the road. In those two years together, The Albertans recorded an EP and full length with Ernest Jenning Records. They played shows at Sled Island, SXSW, and CMJ with bands such as Cuff the Duke, Hard Drugs, and Woods, and were named one of L Magazine's top NYC bands of 2009. Last Fall, The Albertans finally found a home back in Vancouver, and have been playing shows in BC until now, when they'll leave for SXSW and ultimately a full US tour.

The Albertans recorded their new single and forthcoming album New Age, at Chandelier Studios in Brooklyn, NY. Ernest Jenning Record Company (Cuff the Duke, O'Death, Takka Takka, Still Flyin) have released the full-length album today.

Yoko Ono Set To Appear At SXSW Music Festival

SXSW is thrilled to announce Yoko Ono as a very special featured speaker for the 25th Music Conference and Festival. Ms. Ono will sit down with Jody Denberg for a SXSW Interview on Friday March 18th. From her pioneering work in the Fluxus movement of the 1960s to the recent Imagine Peace Tower in Iceland, Ono's art has challenged and informed, melding the personal to the universal in simple and unique ways. Her marriage and creative collaboration with John Lennon was a love story played out on the global stage. Ono's music laid the groundwork for the sounds of punk rock and new wave. Recently, Ono has had five consecutive dance singles charting at #1 on the top of the Billboard Dance Chart.

In 2009, she received Mojo Magazine's Lifetime Achievement Award, and she assembled a new PLASTIC ONO BAND for her latest album, Between My Head And The Sky, co-produced with son Sean Lennon, on his Chimera Music label.  From gallery to stage to social media platforms, Yoko Ono brings a message of peace to the world. Art vs. Science Share New Remix, Announce U.S. Tour Dates

Australia’s Art vs. Science has already made quite the splash in their native country, and now they’re ready to show the U.S. what we’ve been missing out on. The band is coming over for a string of U.S. tour dates, which kicks off with an appearance at SXSW on March 19th. If you haven’t had a chance to check out Art vs. Science yet, download the Kissy Sell Out remix of “Magic Fountain” for a glimpse of the raucous party that the band is bringing our way!

The band has built a huge following in their native country off the back of two independently released EPs (both of which have gone Gold in Australia!) and thanks to their off-the-wall live show that has seen them ascend to almost-headline status at festivals around their native country. Now we’re thrilled to announce their first U.S. release, Magic Fountain EP, out March 15, 2011.

The EP, recorded by Berkfinger (Philadelphia Grand Jury) and mixed by Adrian Bushby (Two Door Cinema Club, Foo Fighters, Muse), is dance music made for Marshall stacks. Imagine AC/DC throwing robots in a drum shop. The songs that comprise the EP are huge, off the wall, unrelenting dance tunes that sound like hypercolor jams forged from sleepless nights and ADD (partly because they are).

Download the FREE MP3 of Kissy Sell Out’s Remix of “Magic Fountain” HERE, and Check Out the Video HERE!
