Sean Bones is coming to Aspen!

Sean says:   "This winter I fought off the nasty weather with a drum machine. I got this old wooden Hammond thing in the fall, and I’d hide out in my draughty bedroom at night, meditating on tonal beats while winter buried my van and ripped leaves from the trees. After a period of falling asleep to its punchy tick tock on the bedside table, song skeletons started to take shape in my dreams. Specifically a melodic “Latin” setting started to infect my day like all the nose blowers at work. Soon I was sick. And I was coughing in time. I called my brother to come over with his bass and we blasted our new song out the window until the snow started to melt. That’s how I made the spring happen on my street."

"Sounds like Bones and his cough both got productive. And check the line “I’m gonna catch whatever you’ve got.” Sickness affected and infected his lyrics here as well. “Rhumba Beat”’s watery lead guitar and organ almost obscure the titular beat, before it changes entirely during the second half of the single. Maybe “Rhumba   Beat” signals outdoor activity weather, but it briefly hints at a darkened dancefloor as well."

Mimi Fishman Auction Happening Now!

The Mimi Fishman Foundation launches its second on-line charity auction of the year with items representing a variety of bands. Of special note the St. Louis Cardinal Baseball team makes an appearance on the auction with a very special hall of fame package. The package consists of tickets to a Cardinals game, passes for the winner and guests to watch batting practice on the field, and an actual seat back from the old Busch Stadium signed by 5 Cardinals Hall of Fame players.

Other auction highlights include String Cheese Incident Red Rocks packages, a Gathering of the Vibes pass package, Dave Matthews Band ticket/lounge passes, and Jon Fishman signed/used drumsticks. In keeping with the baseball theme the auction also includes an official major league baseball signed by all members of Yonder Mountain String Band.

The auction is on the heels of the Foundation announcing their first grants of 2010 totally $18,000 raising the total the Foundation has given away since its inception to over $385,000. Bidding on the auction concludes Monday, April 26; with each auction item having it’s own specific end time.

Lone Star Icon Gary P Nunn To Release TAKING TEXAS TO THE COUNTRY

Gary P. Nunn and Guacamole Records are pleased to announce the April 6 release date of TAKING TEXAS TO THE COUNTRY, fifteenth studio album from the renowned artist touted as a “Texas Music Institution.” A travelogue of moods and songs, this new independent recording lends itself to a variety of dance rhythms, exposing emotional sweet spots layered with the heartfelt singing the traditionalist movement is praised for.

A 13-track adventure that crosses the borders and many a state line, the album orbits into the atmosphere with “Deja Vu,” a true to form “cosmic cowboy” trip back to a lost love. Wistful memories are revisited in the Mile-High City on “Denver,” a ramped up Cajun fais do do in “Down To Louisiana” offers an upbeat take on a New Orleans tradition while the soundtrack for a tropical island getaway is played out on “Mexican Boulevard” and “It’s Not Love.”

Longing for a return trip to Texas, “One State of Mind” eases the homesick heart while “Lone Star Blues” tours the cities and towns of the Republic. A colorful cast of characters, which includes a true Texan on “The Likes of Me” and a consummate bachelor who sings the anthem that is “I’m Not That Kind of Guy,” peppers the collection.

Love, a common theme whether lost or being searched for, is found just “A Two-Step Away” on a Friday night when “The Girl Just Loves to Dance.” The title track moves in toward the end with a message to Nashville about real country music still residing and flourishing in Texas and the sweetly pleading closing devotional “The Rest of My Life” ends the journey.
Tracked at Cherry Ridge Recording Studio in Floresville by distinguished C&W producer Tommy Detamore, TAKING TEXAS TO THE COUNTRY features three new tunes written or co-written by Nunn, a respected songwriter in his own right, alongside numbers by writers such as Johnny Divine, Levi Mullen, Steven Kundert, Michael Halvorsen and Gary’s brother, Steve K. Nunn. Arriving with a stamp of fan approval, Nunn has been showcasing the tunes, road-testing them alongside his Bunkhouse Band and using audience reaction and support as a marker while deciding what to record on the album.
A revered mainstay on the Texas Music Scene, and a seasoned inspiration to the upcoming generations of rising stars, Nunn is no stranger to acclaim and accolades. In addition to many gold albums, his efforts have been applauded and recognized with a number of notable awards and honors. Texas Governor Mark White named him an Official Ambassador to the World, and years later Governor Rick Perry followed by declaring him an Ambassador of Texas Music. An induction into the Texas Hall of Fame came in 2004, and Nunn is also honored in the West Texas Walk of Fame in Lubbock. The Texas Department of Commerce and Tourism’s also included him on the roster of Lone Star Greats who are leaders in the fields of art, athletics and music. The previous residence he established on an 800-acre cattle in Oklahoma allowed him to be recognized by the Oklahoma House of Representatives for his contribution to the preservation of the unique Southwestern style of music.
Having carved the path for the DIY movement prevalent in today’s independent music scene, Nunn’s TAKING TEXAS TO THE COUNTY continues these efforts, providing just the right amount of authenticity needed to ensure his reputation as being indisputably Texas and undeniably a fan favorite. The Antlers Play BOULDER At Fox Theatre On 4.26

Sometimes you have to put yourself first, no matter how difficult that notion seems; no matter how much time and effort you’ve already put into this one person—the person who’s reduced your very being to its absolute core. Just ask Peter Silberman, the string-pulling founder of The Antlers, a solo project that suddenly went widescreen on the self-released Hospice LP (now receiving a proper widespread pressing through Frenchkiss). The first Antlers effort to feature two key permanent players—powerhouse drummer Michael Lerner and the layer-lathering multi-instrumentalist Darby Cicci—it’s an album with a sound that’s actually as ambitious as its concept.

“Hospice came from the idea of caring for a terminal patient who’s mentally abusive to you,” says Silberman. “You don’t have the right to argue with them, either, because they’re the one who’s dying here; they’re the one that’s been dealt a wrong hand. So you take it, but you can only take so much. Eventually, you realize that this person is just destroying you.”

Appropriately enough, Hospice’s 10 distinct chapters resonate on debilitating sonic and lyrical levels, from the hypnotic harp and tension-ratcheting build of “Two” to the sing-or-sink choruses of “Bear” and the speaker-rattling peaks of “Sylvia,” easily one of the year’s most immediate epics. It’s here, amidst contrasting shards of ambient noise, sweeping strings and smoky horns, where The Antlers truly transcend Silberman’s singer-songwriter beginnings—a striking escalation of expectations first hinted at on 2008’s New York Hospitals EP. The progression doesn’t end there, either. In a move that could be taken as the riff-raking extension of his thorough guitar training (from the age of 6 ‘til right before college), “Atrophy” and “Wake” delve into sheets of distortion, subtle shades of soul, cicada-like effects and enough movements to fill an entire EP.

“We were going for something that’d be dense but not too complicated,” explains Silberman. “I hate the word ‘lush,’ but I guess that’s the best way of describing it. The structures are like pop songs—verse/chorus, verse/chorus—but the sound is a little more shoegaze-y or post-rocky.”

It’s about to get even more complicated, too, as The Antlers’ Technicolor-tinged trio take all of Hospice’s songs—and three previous releases—in a completely different direction, jettisoning a note-for-note rendition of the record for “a massive sound” doused in delay, reverb and unrehearsed chaos. And to think Cicci was a stage actor with a desire to drop it all for music just a few years ago.

“Hospice was the clear indication that this isn’t a singer-songwriter thing at all,” says Silberman. “Whatever we record next is going to define the three of us as a ‘band.’

He continues, “I always figured I’d be the ‘shredder’ in a group… But things somehow ended up this way.”  We wouldn’t have it any other way, either.

Krishna Das Kicks Off US Tour TODAY

Called the “Chant Master of American Yoga” by the New York Times, Krishna Das has recently released Heart As Wide As The World, his first studio album in ten years, this month. The album is a collaboration with David Nichtern (“Midnight at the Oasis”) who produced and played guitar. Jerry Marotta (Hall & Oates, Peter Gabriel) on drums, percussion.  As well as, world musicians Steve Gorn on bansuri flute and Benjy Wertheimer on esraj, amongst an array of other instruments.

Layering traditional Hindu kirtan with instantly accessible melodies and modern instrumentation, Krishna Das has been called yoga’s “rock star.”  With a remarkably soulful voice that touches the deepest chord in even the most casual listener, Krishna Das – known to friends, family, and fans as simply KD – has taken the call-and-response chanting out of yoga centers and into concert halls, becoming a worldwide icon and the best-selling chant artist of all time, with over 300,000 records sold.  His first studio recording in a decade, “HEART AS WIDE AS THE WORLD” invests KD’s magnetic chanting with an electrifying rock ‘n’ roll sensibility informed by a lifetime of experience and musical love.

Krishna Das has been recording his popular and much-loved albums of kirtan since 1996. Having made numerous pilgrimages to India throughout his career and meeting teachers of many spiritual traditions, Krishna Das follows the path of Bhakti yoga – the yoga of devotion – and brings a lifetime of spirituality into his music. Over the years, his collaborators in the studio have included Rick Rubin on Door of Faith, Sting on Pilgrim Heart and Mike D in a 50-person kirtan choir on Breath of the Heart, also produced by Rubin.

Krishna Das will be touring this spring with Deva Premal & Miten, dubbed “The Johnny and June Carter Cash of chant” by Yoga Journal . Together they are creating an extraordinary series of concerts across the US, highlighting the newfound popularity of kirtan and mantra chanting. These musicians, who have enjoyed a worldwide grassroots success the past decade, are each celebrating the release of new albums with their first co-headlined tour.

PHAROAH SANDERS RETURNS to BROOKLYN

Two of Brooklyn’s vanguard organizations for African American music and culture, Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium and International African Arts Festival, will collaborate to produce a Community Day Gala Concert, as part of the 11th Annual Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival, featuring saxophone great Pharoah Sanders. This event will take place on Saturday, March 27th at Boys and Girls High School auditorium located at 1700 Fulton Street in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.  Tickets are $35 in advance, available online or by calling 718.773.2252 or 718.638.6700.  Doors open at 7:30 PM concert begins at 8:00 PM.

Grammy award winner Pharoah Sanders has not performed in Brooklyn since his days at the legendary jazz shrine The East. Pharoah’s ascent to stardom began with collaborations with John Coltrane.  His distinctive sound has revered him among many jazz lovers.  Other jazz luminaries he has performed or recorded with include: McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Sun Ra, Don Cherry, Billy Higgins and Alice Coltrane just to name some.  This concert also includes performances by Omi Yesa (Afro-Cuban and Yoruba folklore music) and poet Louis Reyes Rivera.

International African Arts Festival is a not for profit entity that began in 1971 as a fundraiser for the Uhuru Sasa School. Their cultural presentation was originally known as the African Street Carnival, fore runner to BAM’s Dance Africa Festival.  Now in its 40th year the annual IAAF attracts nearly 75,000 people and presents musicians from across the African Diaspora.  International artist such as Fela Kuti, The Mighty Sparrow, Lauren Hill and Abbey Lincoln, just to name a few, as well as local artists present(ed) their musical styling's.

Amelia’s Mechanics Tour Dates

Amelia's Mechanics hires Nashville-based drummer and percussionist Jamie Dick to perform with the band on select tour dates this spring. Dick has been performing live for over 15 years and most recently recorded with Rayna Gellert and Abigail Washburn on each of the artist's forthcoming albums.
Amelia's Mechanics is touring in support of their debut album "North, South" released earlier this year. The band's tour launches Thursday, March 11 in Raleigh, NC at the Pour House Music Hall and takes through North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia and is supported by the following radio stations: WDVX, WNCW, WUNC, WKNC, WUIN, WQFS, WXDU, WUSC, WUAG, WDWG, and WRMT.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY:
Amelia’s Mechanics is an all-female, Americana music trio whose instrumentation and vocal harmonies traverse classical, country, and jazz genres resulting in a sound best described as vintage country with a moonshine concerto. The band, whose name, debut album title, and lyrics are inspired by the accomplishments of early aviatrix and aviators, explorers and pioneers, writes and sings about the mechanics underlying life’s triumphs and tragedies. 2 Nights of EOTO at the Fox Theater

From dance halls to intimate theaters worldwide comes EOTO - the nation’s top innovator in glitchy electronic, bass thumping, dub-step themed music. With performances booked well into 2010 including a special two-night run at the Fox Theater, EOTO is taking the country by storm with their innovative brand of live electronic music.

What EOTO achieves on stage is nothing short of astounding. Performed with all of the bells and whistles of a traditional electronic artist plus the addition of live drums, vocals, bass and guitar, the duo creates each and every bass ridden noise right before your eyes -without the addition of a single pre-recorded track. Known for their 100% live improvised performance, EOTO is breaking ground into a new sub culture of music while standing with some of the nations best live DJ’s in the country.

With leagues of sold-out theater performances in 2009, the project started out as an avenue for the duo to blow off steam and generally just have a good time playing around with technology with music.
