James Elkington & Nathan Salsburg Release Guitar Duo Album

Albums of guitar duets are rare. Albums of guitar duets featuring one American and one Englishman, synthesizing their particular geographically specific approaches in a collection of new compositions, are even more rare. Not since Stefan Grossman and John Renbourn's partnerships of the 1970s has there been such a happy reconciliation of Merrie Old England and the good old USA, in which baroque meets the blues, music-hall steps out to ragtime, and Benjamin Britten sits down with Blind Blake.

James Elkington moved from London to Chicago around the turn of the millennium and has since released a string of albums as leader of The Zincs for Thrill Jockey Records.  After dissolving the band in 2008, Elkington has concentrated on acoustic, folk-tinged music with his band The Horse's Ha (that he shares with Freakwater's Janet Bean), culminating in the release of their debut album, Of The Cathmawr Yards in 2009. He is also the owner/operator of a clunky solo career, and moonlights convincingly as the guitar player in Jon Langford's (of The Mekons) Skull Orchard.

Nathan Salsburg is best known as an archivist and producer for the Alan Lomax Archive, curator of the Twos & Fews vernacular-music imprint on Drag City Records, and host of the "Root Hog Or Die" program on East Village Radio. But after a 2007 move from New York City back to his childhood home of Louisville, Kentucky - and the inclusion of a track on Tompkins Square's "Imaginational Anthem, Volume 3" compilation - he discovered adequate time, space, and energy to devote to guitar playing.

Elkington suggested a leap of faith into a collaboration, despite the fact that the two had never previously played guitar together. Avos, then, hither and thither over several seasons, between a porch in Louisville and a kitchen in Chicago, slowly took shape. Aptly, the name comes from the Russian word for the confident approach to new situations, and the faith that nothing tragic will occur once in them.

James Elkington & Nathan Salsburg play their record release show on Sunday, October 9th at The Hideout in Chicago. More shows will be scheduled in the coming weeks.

Tipper Sound Experience is Unleashed

Commencing this summer British composer and producer, Tipper, is embarking on a sonic pilgrimage, performing at select venues and festivals with the NeXuS Funktion One Dance Stacks originally designed by legendary sound guru Tony Andrews. Tipper will be joined by the highly sought-after lighting impresario Audiopixel to present an exclusive visual experience driven by highly attuned, audio responsive, 3D LED lighting software using intelligent control of light and color. Topped off with tour support from VibeSquaD the performances are intending to blow the minds of all who are lucky enough to encounter the TIPPER SOUND EXPERIENCE.

Tipper (real name DaveTipper) is widely acknowledged as one of Electronic music's pioneering innovators. He was signed to Sony as a teenager when he helped kickstart the Nuskool Breakbeat genre, creating the deepest and baddest basslines heard before, or since. He went on to inspire the Glitch Hop movement, focused on merging hip hop beats with electronic trickery through his seminal Tip Hop and Wobble Factor LP's. During this time he also composed one of the first albums produced and intended for release in the 5.1 surround sound format, and Surrounded was nominated Best Release Intended for Surround Sound. His talents in Sound Design and Digital Mastering have him in great demand with major music making software programs, and accordingly his work is quietly featured in the output of countless releases in various genres. His live performances consist largely of his own unreleased compositions, and he is highly regarded for scratching his own sounds over his music, creating a live element of turntablism stemming from prowess early in his career as a vinyl DJ.

THE TIPPER SOUND EXPERIENCE will feature a 5 way crossover sound system in a Quadraphonic Array with specialized sub woofers dedicated to 45 hertz and below; this configuration achieves incredible clarity and sonic accuracy punctuated by thick and luxurious super-low bass. When positioned this way for Tipper, these dance stacks are known for creating an immersive sound environment that transforms the dance floor into an ethereal field of holographic sound. The purity of the Funktion One design approach completely avoids the usual pitfall of system EQ with its associated phase problems, allowing all of Tipper's production trickery and nuance to be presented in an unfettered manner. This technology has won numerous international awards for Best Sound Product in the club world, and their installations have been behind countless 'Club of The Year' winners.

Audio Pro Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, and inaugural PLASA Gottelier Award winner Tony Andrews founded Funktion One with John Newsham in 1992. Whilst often imitated, their designs have been the first choice of many permanent and touring sound applications around the World including luminary clients Pink Floyd, Santana, and the Glastonbury Festival. They are globally known for their pioneering work and ethos, and consistently set the standard for modern audio engineering.

In their own words: We understand sound to be the most important of our senses and in fact, the root of the structure of the entire Universe. As such, we try to pay the amazing acuity of human hearing the respect it deserves by providing products that deliver as much resolution and detail as is possible. We also pay considerable attention to the emotional effect of not just music, but the sound itself, what you might call its 'quality'. In a world where everything is 'dumbing down' and finesse and subtlety are rapidly disappearing, it is a source of pride to us that we are continually going in the opposite direction, expanding the envelope. On a spiritual level, good music and good sound has the effect of opening peoples' minds and deepening their consciousness which can only be good for the planet.

THE TIPPER SOUND EXPERIENCE features a rare matchup of audio and visual talent and will include headline performances at The Big Bounce, Rain Dance, and SONIC BLOOM festivals, followed by a rare show at The Coconut Grove Grand Ballroom on Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and culminating with a special presentation at The Regency Ballroom in San Francisco. Steep Canyon Rangers Join Steve Martin on New Album

The Steep Canyon Rangers (SCR), have joined iconic comedian, Steve Martin on his sophomore album entitled Rare Bird Alert to be released TODAY, March 15, 2011. Bringing bluegrass music to new audiences, SCR continue their meteoric rise as passionate ambassadors for the bluegrass music they love. With Martin, SCR played for more people than any other bluegrass band in 2010.  This year will be even bigger, as the group prepares a nationwide tour with Martin to support their collaborative project.  The Rare Bird Tour will kick off in New York City with three sold-out performances at the famed Joe’s Pub March 15-17 as well as a return appearances to the Late Show with David Letterman on March 16 and The View on March 17.

When Martin, an accomplished banjo player and songwriter, handpicked SCR to tour and record with him last year, they jumped at the chance.  “Serendipity has made a better match than any bluegrass computer dating service,” jokes Martin. With Rare Bird Alert, Martin and Steep Canyon Rangers have created an album filled with the traditional bluegrass sound, bursting at the seams with banjo, fiddle and lyrics that are both fun and reflective.

The title track “Rare Bird Alert” perfectly scores the lonely ache and melancholy of bird watching. Paul McCartney guests on “Best Love” a foot-stomper about love and the little things.  On “Go Away, Stop, Turn Around, Come Back” SCR’s lead singer, Woody Platt, tells the story of love, breakup and reunion while “Jubilation Day” bounces with the delight and renewed vigor that can come from a breakup. The Dixie Chicks lend their considerable talent to “You” the saddest un-sad song about a past love with no regret. The closing tracks on the record showcase Martin’s comedy roots.  On “Atheists Don’t Have No Songs” Martin and SCR create a gospel song for those without one while “King Tut” allows Steep Canyon Rangers to put their bluegrass-spin on an old Martin favorite.

After a year jam-packed with tour dates, including Carnegie Hall, and headlining festivals such as Bonnaroo, Merlefest, New Orleans Jazzfest, Newport Folk Festival, Martin helped SCR introduce bluegrass to millions of who may have been hearing it for the first time and SCR show no sign of stopping. Tori Amos "Live from the Artists Den" DVD Released July 13

On July 13, 2010 Artists Den Records will release the Limited Edition DVD “Tori Amos: Live from the Artists Den,” featuring a private solo performance by the Grammy-nominated artist for just 100 fans in the Veterans Room of New York’s historic Park Avenue Armory. The DVD’s release coincides will the nationwide premiere of the second season of “Live from the Artists Den,” the hit public television series spotlighting extraordinary artists performing in extraordinary settings, which features Amos’s concert in addition to shows by Ringo Starr with Ben Harper, Corinne Bailey Rae, David Gray, and others.  For local listings, visit TheArtistsDen.com

The DVD’s special features include two songs not included in the televised broadcast, a 20-minute interview with music journalist Alan Light, a tour of the Veterans Room with Amos, and a 34-page scrapbook containing behind-the-scenes photos and a history of the historic venue.

Tori Amos is one of the most influential and respected artists of the modern era.  The double-digit Grammy nominee has recorded 11 acclaimed studio albums – and gone platinum nearly 20 times – since emerging in the early ’90s.

Amos closed 2009 with a special solo show for 100 fans in New York City’s Park Avenue Armory, an immense historical landmark built in the late 19th century as both a military facility and a social club.  Described as “Greek, Moresque, and Celtic with a dash of the Egyptian, the Persian, and the Japanese,” the Armory’s ornate Veterans Room provided a fitting setting for one of the most eclectic and culturally curious artists in music today.

Of playing the unique room, Amos said, “Let’s face it: when you’re playing in a room that doesn’t have a lot of personality, then you have to bring everything yourself.  It’s sort of like a bad blind date—you hope the food’s good, and if the waitress is entertaining, you’ll make it through.  But when you have a magical place, then all of a sudden it’s a conversation, and you could be falling in love on your first date.”

The DVD features both hits and rare fan favorites spanning Amos’ catalogue, from her breakthrough 1991 debut “Little Earthquakes” to her acclaimed 2009 album “Abnormally Attracted to Sin.”

The “Live from the Artists Den: Season 2” compilation album is currently available on iTunes and features “Ruby Through the Looking Glass,” a rare song Amos played to open this special show.

Bing Crosby: Seasons (Deluxe Edition)
Bing's final album, originally released in 1977, has never been available on CD, let alone with 13 bonus tracks! This new deluxe edition features the original twelve tracks plus Bing's very last recordings, made at a BBC session three days before his death, and five poems recorded for fan clubs but never distributed. Includes from the original release 'Seasons; On the Very First Day of the Year; June in January; Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year; April Showers; June Is Bustin' Out All Over; In the Good Old Summertime; Summer Wind; Autumn in New York; September Song; Sleigh Ride', and 'Yesterday When I Was Young', plus the bonus poems 'Around the Corner; If; The Singers; Lucy Gray (Solitude)', and 'The Slaves Dream', and the BBC recordings 'Feels Good, Feels Right; Nevertheless; The Only Way to Go; Summer Wind; The Night Is Young and You're So Beautiful; There's Nothing I Haven't Sung About; As Time Goes By', and 'Once in a While'!

Bing Crosby: Return To Paradise Islands (Deluxe Edition)
Bing's collection of Hawaiian favorites was recorded in 1963 by Frank Sinatra's Reprise label and has never been available on CD or even reissued at all! And for this edition a new stereo mix has been created from the original session tapes that is simply, well, paradisiaical. Bing is accompanied by the Nelson Riddle Orchestra on 'Keep Your Eyes on the Hands; Forevermore; Love and Aloha; Beautiful Kahana; The Hukilau Song; The Old Plantation; Lovely Hula Hands; Frangipani Blossom; Farewell My Kane; Adventures in Paradise; Return to Paradise', and Home in Hawaii'. Six bonus tracks include a brief session outtake of 'Return to Paradise' and five previously unissued Hawaiian tracks recorded in 1961 featuring 'My Little Grass Shack (in Kealakakua, Hawaii); The Cockeyed Mayor of Kaunakakai; Yaaka Hula Hickey Dula; Ukulele Lady', and 'King's Serenade'.

Bing Crosby:
On The Sentimental Side (Deluxe Edition - previously unreleased album)
Recorded in 1962 and never released, this collection of popular songs, many dating back to Bing's boyhood, has been long rumored to exist by Crosby fans, and finally appears here with five bonus tracks! The original album is all medleys: 'My Bonnie/The Band Played On; Always/Wishing; Remember/Put on Your Old Gray Bonnet; All Alone/In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree; How Can I Leave Thee/A Bird In a Gilded Cage/The Sidewalks of New York; If I Didn't Care/Blueberry Hill; Beautiful Dreamer/The Last Rose of Summer; Roll On Silver Moon/Now the Day Is Over; Tom Dooley/The Old Gray Mare; Together/What'll I Do; Look For the Silver Lining/Say It With Music', and 'Did You Ever See a Dream Walking/A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody'. Bing Crosby: Bing On Broadway (new album)
When it came to interpreting show tunes, Bing had few peers. This brand-new collection of rare material features him singing selections from such legendary Broadway musicals as 'South Pacific, The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees, Can-Can, Anything Goes, My Fair Lady' and many others, accompanied by Buddy Cole & His Trio on 17 tracks and John Scott Trotter on two tracks. Bing Crosby: El Senor Bing (Deluxe Edition)
Bing loved Spanish music, and for this 1960 collection, recorded for his own Project label, he was accompanied by none other than the Billy May Orchestra— the CD debut of this LP! Kenny Drew Jr. In Rare New York City Performance

Kenny Drew Jr.- for the Grateful Web

Jazz pianist Kenny Drew Jr. returns to New York for a rare solo performance on December 17, 2008 as part of the Lyric Chamber Music Society of New York concert series at the Kosciuszko Foundation. He continues the Lyric's tradition of infusing Jazz into traditional Chamber Music programming, combining his virtuosic talents, evident in his performances of Classical works, with superb improvisational instincts, as showcased in his Jazz performances, be they solo or in collaboration with such luminaries as David Taylor, Daniel Schnyder and many others.

In just ten seasons since its debut in the spring of 1998, the Lyric Chamber Music Society is recognized by musicians, the press, and audiences as one of the preeminent chamber music organizations in the country. Founded to present the works of the giants of the past and present, the Lyric performs masterpieces of chamber music literature and unusual repertoire in the intimate salon of an elegant Fifth Avenue mansion and at Victor Borge Hall — offering the music in the personal and intimate ambience in which it was intended to be heard. "Adventurous," The New York Times has called the Lyric, for its repertoire spanning from the Renaissance to the present, a combination of classic canonical chamber works, rarely performed compositions, and contemporary pieces. Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata may be followed by a sonata by Poulenc, Gershwin by Jobim, Bizet by bossa nova, or J.S. Bach transcribed for four marimbas by a world premiere composed for Lyric artists.

The Lyric has attracted to its roster some of the world's most distinguished musicians, accomplished orchestral players, and up-and-coming young talent. More than a dozen concert masters and first chair players of the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra as well as extraordinary jazz musicians have chosen the Lyric as their musical second home. Young artists who are recognized in music circles as the next generation of performing greats—many handpicked by the Lyric's legendary Advisory Board—regularly get an opportunity to introduce themselves to a wider audience. Such has been the creative energy and sense of possibility flowing from our concerts that in the brief period since our inception one new trio has already been formed under our auspices and two have made their New York debuts.

Reaching out to an ever-widening audience, Lyric virtuosos bring the inspiring scope of music's possibilities to thousands of New York public school students and reach millions of listeners on National Public Radio. As New Yorkers and visitors look to the Metropolitan Opera for opera and the New York Philharmonic for symphony, more and more people are turning to the Lyric Chamber Music Society of New York for chamber music and "chamzz," a Lyric innovation: programs combining classical music and jazz.

Kenny Drew Jr. was born in New York City in 1958. He started music lessons at the age of four. After studying classical piano with his Aunt Marjorie, he branched out into the area of jazz music. Kenny Jr. has performed worldwide with a comprehensive variety of musicians, including Stanley Jordan, Out of the Blue (OTB), Stanley Turrentine, Slide Hampton and the Jazz Masters, the Mingus Big Band, Steve Grossman, Yoshiaki Masuo, Sadao Watanabe, Smokey Robinson, Frank Morgan, Daniel Schnyder, and many others.

Kenny Drew Jr. was the winner of the 1990 Great American Jazz Piano Competition in Jacksonville, Florida. He has appeared as a leader at many major festivals, including the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, Kyoto Jazz Festival, Savannah on Stage Festival, Clearwater Jazz Festival, and the Newark Jazz Festival. Kenny has also performed as a leader at many major jazz clubs around the country, such as Bradley's (NY), Visiones (NY), The Blue Note (NY), Blues Alley (DC), Fat Tuesday's (NY), The Village Gate (NY), Trumpets (NJ), The Jazz Showcase (Chicago), Twins Lounge (DC), One Step Down (DC), and the Montreal Bistro (Toronto). He has recorded nine albums as a leader and has also made numerous recordings as a sideman. Kenny has performed at concerts and in clubs with The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, the Faddis/Hampton/Heath Sextet, Steve Turre, Jack Walrath, David Sanchez, Jack Wilkins, Michael Mossman, Ronnie Cuber, Steve Slagle, and Marlena Shaw. Other performances included appearances with Jon Faddis, Slide Hampton, and Jimmy Heath at the Montreal North Sea, and Lugano festivals and with the Mingus Big Band at the Chicago and Detroit festivals.

In addition to his exploits in Jazz, Kenny has built a reputation as a performer of classical music. He has performed both jazz and classical music at the Barossa Music Festival in Australia. The classical repertoire included Bach concertos and music by African-American composers. These concerts consisted of solo piano recitals and appearances with renowned classical musicians such as violinist Jane Peters and pianist Peter Waters. Kenny participated in a performance of Charles Mingus' large-scale composition Epitaph at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam under the direction of Gunther Schuller. He performed a Mozart concerto with the Milwaukee Symphony conducted by Andreas Delfs, and appeared at the International Bach Festival in Leipzig, playing Bach's music with Daniel Schnyder and David Taylor. Further appearances as a classical performer include the Luzern Piano Festival and in Key West.

In addition to his work as a soloist and jazz side man, Kenny has been playing with a classical/chamber-jazz trio led by composer/saxophonist/flautist Daniel Schnyder, with David Taylor on bass trombone. The group has performed concerts in Switzerland and New York as well as the Barossa Festival in 1997. Among Kenny's recordings with Daniel Schnyder are the Sonata for Soprano Saxophone And Piano and the Sonata for Bass Trombone And Piano (with David Taylor). Kenny also participated in the recording of Schnyder's Third Symphony with the Basel Radio Orchestra under the direction of Hans Drewanz. Other groups and artists Kenny has performed with are the Absolute Ensemble, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Shirley Horn, Teddy Edwards and Henry Johnson. Kenny also played a solo piano tribute to Duke Ellington on Ellington's 100th birthday at the Tonhalle in Zurich. He has recently appeared with his own trio at the Village Vanguard in New York, the Jazz Showcase in Chicago and on the Queen Elizabeth II Jazz Cruise.

Kenny has recorded over twenty albums as a leader, amongst them, in 2001, Autumn for the Japanese label Pony Canyon. The CD features George Mraz on bass and Tony Jefferson on drums. Drew recorded a CD of two-piano jazz arrangements of music by Ravel with pianist Peter Waters. This CD, which was recorded in Switzerland, also features the Winterthur Chamber Orchestra. Kenny Drew Jr. taught at the Engadin International Summer Piano Academy in Switzerland, giving master classes and private lessons. He was one of the featured artists at the West Coast Jazz Party in California. He has toured Switzerland with Daniel Schnyder, including a concert with members of the Zurich Opera Orchestra. Kenny played two concerts at the Umea Jazz Festival in Sweden, including a performance of Daniel Schnyder's Piano Concerto with the Norrlands Opera Orchestra under the direction of Kristjan Järvi. This concert was recorded for release as a CD.
