Ane Brun- Releases 4 Albums, Opens for Peter Gabriel

Norwegian guitarist and vocalist, singer and songwriter Ane Brun returns to the US as part of her US Tour with Peter Gabriel.   Ane will be releasing FOUR beloved albums including: Spending Time with Morgan, Duets, Sketches and Live in Scandanvia.
Ane will be warming the stage for Peter Gabriel across the US along with playing in his band.

Drive-by Truckers @ Boulder Theater

Flaunting a mix of Southern pride, erudite lyrics, and a muscled three-guitar attack, Drive-By Truckers became one of the most well-respected alternative country-rock acts of the 2000s. Led by frontman Patterson Hood and comprising a rotating cast of Georgia and Alabama natives, the band celebrated the South while refusing to paint over its spotty past.

History, folklore, politics, and character studies all shared equal space in the Truckers catalog, which offered up its first blast of gutsy, twangy rock with 1998's Gangstabilly. However, it was the band's ambitious double-disc concept album, The Southern Rock Opera, that became their unlikely magnum opus. A two-act affair, the album explored Patterson Hood's fascination with 1970s Southern rock (specifically Lynyrd Skynyrd) while tackling the cultural contradictions of the region.

Although the band remained on tour well into 2009, the Truckers also found time to release their second concert album, Live from Austin TX, as well as a collection of unreleased material entitled The Fine Print: A Collection of Oddities and Rarities. Patterson Hood rounded out the year by issuing his first solo record, Murdering Oscar (And Other Love Songs), although 2010 found him returning to the fold for Drive-By Truckers' eighth studio album, The Big To-Do.

Delfeayo Marsalis 'Charlie Parker with a Twist' at The Iridium

A multiple Grammy Award winner as a producer, trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis "solos with authority, inserting musical quotes spontaneously as the mood takes him in different directions" (All About Jazz). He comes from a New Orleans musical family that includes not only his older brothers Branford and Wynton, but also his father, renowned pianist Ellis Marsalis, and his younger brother, drummer Jason. The San Francisco Examiner calls him "one of the best, most imaginative and musical of the trombonists of his generation. His fluid expression and keen melodic sense are especially commendable."

As a trombonist, Delfeayo has toured internationally with legendary jazz artists Art Blakey, Abdullah Ibrahim, Elvin Jones, Slide Hampton and Max Roach, as well as touring with his own modern jazz ensemble. Maceo Parker at Cervante's Ballroom - March 12th

Maceo Parker: his name is synonymous with Funky Music, his pedigree impeccable; his band: the tightest little funk orchestra on earth.

Everyone knows by now that he’s played with each and every leader of funk, his start with James Brown, which Maceo describes as "like being at University"; jumping aboard the Mothership with George Clinton; stretching out with Bootsy’s Rubber Band. He’s the living, breathing pulse which connects the history of Funk in one golden thread. The cipher which unravels dance music down to its core.

“Everything’s coming up Maceo,” concluded DownBeat Magazine in a 1991 article at the beginning of Maceo Parker’s solo career. At the time Maceo was a remembered by aficionados of funk music as sideman; appreciated mainly by those in the know. More than a decade and a half later Maceo Parker has been enjoying a blistering solo career. For the past sixteen years Maceo has been building a new funk empire, fresh and stylistically diverse. He navigates deftly between James Brown’s 1960’s soul and George Clinton’s 1970’s freaky funk while exploring mellower jazz and the grooves of hip-hop.

His collaborations over the years performing or recording or both have included Ray Charles, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, De La Soul, Dave Matthews Band and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. His timeless sound has garnered him a fresh young fan base. It is almost impossible to separate which came first, Maceo or the funk. The amazing P-funk Parker has been at it with his legendary alto horn for some time dating back to the 1960’s. That’s when Maceo and his drummer brother Melvin climbed on board the James Brown funky soul funk train. It wasn’t long before James coined the solo summoning signature, “ Maceo, I want you to Blow!” . To most musicologists it’s the muscially fertile group of men from this period of James Brown’s band who are recognized as the early pioneers of the modern funk and hip-hop we still jump to today.

Larry Carlton Trio @ Boulder Theater

With his distinctive style and touch it would be hard not to recognize the playing of guitar legend and studio heavyweight Larry Carlton. Ranked as one of the most recorded pop and jazz guitarists in history, he has released more than 20 solo albums, done more than 3,000 studio sessions and picked up a few Grammys during the course of an illustrious career that spans four decades. His sound is stamped all over his works which range from his early stints with Jazz Crusaders, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell and Michael Franks to collaborations with fellow ax-slingers Lee Ritenour and Steve Lukather (of the supergroup Toto.)
Like so many other Los Angeles studio musicians, guitarist and composer Larry Carlton was faced with a choice a number of years back: whether to go solo and develop a name for himself under his own name or to continue the less risky, more lucrative existence as a session guitarist, making good money and recording with prominent musicians. Fortunately for fans of this eclectic guitarist, he chose the former, and has recorded under his own name for Warner Bros., MCA Records and GRP Records since 1978.
Despite the tragedy that was foisted on him in the late '80s after he was shot by gun-wielding infidels, dragging him through a long and dark period of hospitalization and rehabilitation, Carlton's output over the years has been steady through the 1980s and 1990s. Carlton seems to have slowed down his touring schedule a bit, but certainly not his recording schedule. Always happy to meet with the press, Carlton has a sweet, peaceful personality, and one can hear it in his unique, rhythmic, warm guitar chords and ringing guitar tones.

DOUG KEITH: "The Lucky Ones"

Doug Keith, an exceptional artist and performer, is set to release his new full-length, The Lucky Ones, in March, 2010 (exact date tbc).  The Lucky Ones, an 11-song collection on indie imprint The Village Label, vividly showcases Keith’s strengths as a guitarist and songwriter, capturing significant emotional truths in every song.

The material on The Lucky Ones ranges from the acoustic starkness of "We Left Everything," to the surging electricity of "The Lucky Ones," to the buoyant textures of "Skip James Radio." His simple-yet-poignant lyrics are layered over soaring instrumental arrangements that are expertly tailored to create distinct aural atmospheres. The link connecting each track is Keith’s weathered, knowing voice, and the results are nothing short of breathtaking.

Although The Lucky Ones is only his second full-length solo album, Keith is no stranger to the studio or the life of a touring musician.  Music has been his passion for years, and it shows in the beauty and intimacy of his current work. Keith started his career playing bass with punk trio The Gods Hate Kansas, and went on to play with several other punk/avant-garde bands, including noted noise-rock combo Up the Empire.  But Keith always worked on his own material, releasing a four-song EP and half of a split 7" single under the name The First Person to See an Elephant.  Here’s to Outliving Me, his official solo debut in January of 2009, was the first release under his own name and his introduction to international audiences. With The Lucky Ones, Keith delivers a moving batch of songs that are a worthy follow-up – and natural progression – to his stunning debut.

Keith’s songs are honest and the emotions are pure, and this comes across in his raw beautiful live performances.

Rick Alvin Shaier streets solo debut “Mantis Preying”

While stationed in Phoenix, AZ during the recording of Miniature Tiger’s “Tell It To The Volcano”, (Rick is also a member of Modern Art act Miniature Tigers) Rick holed up in a friend’s bathroom with a microphone and a Powerbook and went to town.  The end result is the 9 song “vocal composition” coined “Mantis Preying”. By limiting the recording to body parts and vocal gymnastics, Rick began his first journey working with unlimited multi-track arrangements via Digidesign’s Pro Tools.  Bjork’s “Medulla” served as the predominant inspiration behind Rick writing and layering vocals without the use of instruments.

 

rick-alvinThe songs on “Mantis Preying” feature dense, layered, complicated arrangements that somehow weave a central melody and structure throughout the cacophony of ideas.  This complex blend of rhythms and harmonies cannot seemingly come from one voice and one microphone. Though recorded under the constraints of “vocals only”, it projects a sum much larger than it’s parts, making use of the full sonic spectrum.  The record is completed with the song “Mystery of the Yellow Room” paying tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber by combining a medley of themes from the “Phantom of the Opera”.

 

Rick spent his formative music years studying piano in steamy, sun drenched, Phoenix, AZ, and graduated to drumming in a few different high school punk bands.  He learned quickly on instruments both stringed and skinned, and began tinkering with 4 tracks and microphones early on in the process.  Driven from an internal realization that he had to get the madness out of his head, vomiting the ideas out on tape became a cathartic endeavor for him.  As these bedroom demo samurai sessions wore on, Rick eventually started labeling these recordings with the moniker “Alvin Band”.  The bonus EP “Lady Portrait”, included in the package, is a latter example of these bedroom sessions.

 

Lately,  Rick has been rambling around the United States playing drums in Minature Tigers and opening for bands such as Ben Folds, Kevin Devine, and Guster. The Miniature Tigers crew has been performing material from the repertoire of Alvin Band as well.  There is a lot of music to come from young Mr. Schaier, and the combination release of “Mantis Preying”, coupled with the bonus EP “Lady Portrait” serves as a solid introduction into his sorcery. More lunacy on the way…

Devil Makes Three front man Pete Bernhard books solo gigs

After opening for Sea Sick Steve in NYC last week, Pete’s solo performances are a far bit different from his primary band but one key element remains the same - his defining vocal style, unique phrasing and his distinctive point of view.
 


devil-makes-threeAll the while, The Devil Makes Three "Do Wrong Right" continues to gain momentum.   After selling out shows all across the country via word of mouth from fans and friends, Do Wrong Right garners its 16th straight week on in the Top 10 of the Billboard Bluegrass Charts and the album continues to sell strongly each week.  The album holds steadily in heavy rotation on the college charts along with charting on the Americana/Jamband Chart.

Devil Makes Three leader Pete Bernhard steps out solo

Pete will be playing solo dates this summer and will be doing substantial touring around the release of the record. Pete will also be touting with The Devil Makes Three on their dates in October and November.

On his second solo album, Straight Line (his first solo commercial release),  Pete lays down a set of his more driving numbers.  He focuses on songs that he felt needed drums and weren’t suited for the all-acoustic old-country/blues/punk outfit The Devil Makes Three. His solo set has a  no-holds-barred feel about it and lyrical fearlessness that one only finds in the truly liberated – feeling no pressure of fitting into a mold. There’s folk, funky New Orleans soul, blues, rock and other genres craft fully melded into a seamless and natural combination that is, like The Devil Makes Three, extremely difficult to place into a single genre.  This may be the biggest similarity to Pete’s primary band – the music crosses many boundaries.  You feel it, you relate to it, it’s like an old friend you’ve never met before.  You have no idea what it is or what to call it.

Pete’s lyrics are thoughtful and inquisitive, often with painted with his well-known sarcasm and irony. He questions the status quo frequently, most notably on his song “Orphan”.  Would you rather be an orphan or a slave? Some might go through their entire lives obliviously, never asking or answering a question like this but Pete has no interest in shirking life’s tougher dilemmas.  “I got to thinking how everyone has some idea about how you should be and what you should and shouldn’t say.  Trying to pay attention to all that can be demanding.  It’s about how people are never satisfied,” he explained. “Pray For Rain” shines a spotlight on the mindless, sheep-like mentality of those who worship at the altar of consumerism.  Straight Line is almost exclusively original compositions, with one cover, “Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold” from the great Townes Van Zandt. He reinvents the folk classic with wailing B3 organ and arrangements that bring to mind the best of The Band.

Pete hails from a small, liberal community in Vermont with a family rife with musicians. His father played guitar and wrote songs, his brother attended Berklee School of Music and plays guitar and an aunt who was a folk musician. Immersed in music, he was drawn to older, traditional  blues from a young age, and also studied the style and aesthetics of music traditions like New Orleans R&B and country while simultaneously getting caught up in punk rock. He headed west as a young man, first to Nashville, then on to Washington State, where he formed a band with a childhood friend and hit the road. When they broke down one day in Santa Cruz, California, they stayed with a fellow Vermonter who was in school – The Devil Makes Three was born.

pete-bernhardThe Devil Makes Three has developed an audience that encompasses just about every kind of music fan from punk rockers to Deadheads, bluegrass barflies and rockabilly fanatics to indie rock kids. “We’re not really a genre-specified band,” he concludes, “I’ve  actually had people come up to me and say, ‘I don’t listen to anything but  hip-hop, but I love The Devil Makes Three. I think we’ve always tried to  keep our songwriting honest and natural, I guess that ends up making it difficult to really define our band. That always keeps things really exciting.”

With a successful band and limited free time, one  might wonder when Pete Bernhard has time to work on his solo music, but that question is easily answered, he told Santa Cruz’s Good Times. “Before, we  were all working jobs and playing in the band and that took all my time. Now we don’t work, so going solo keeps me busy. When The Devil Makes Three goes off the road for a month or two, it gives me time to try something new with my solo songs. I have no interest in stopping.” He will continue to  both question and reveal the truth through his songwriting, on his record and on the road.

Old 97's Murry Hammond's first solo album due August 18

On August 18, 2008, Old 97's bass player and co-frontman Murry Hammond will celebrate the national release of his first full-length album outside of the Old 97's.

For two months prior to this street date, the album – I Don't Know Where I'm Going But I'm On My Way – was made available exclusively at Old 97's shows and through special mail-order. Hammond wished to capitalize on fan anticipation of the album's release in order to raise funds for the non-profit organization Project Mercy. Project Mercy builds basic housing in the poorest sections around Tijuana, Mexico (similar in mission to Habitat for Humanity) using volunteer labor provided by area churches. A group of men and women from Hammond's home church in Burbank, Calif. (where he performs roots gospel music weekly when he's not traveling) have adopted the organization as a primary mission. Hammond was in a unique position to raise funds quickly, and in time to fund fall building before the 2008 winter sets in. The strategy has already paid off, for as of July 1st generous fans purchased enough CDs to pay for one house.  The album will always be made available at Old 97's shows, with 100% going to charitable groups such as Project Mercy.

Hammond has played many memorable solo shows over the years, but it was certain events in his life, including the death of both parents, leaving Texas to start a family in California, and a renewed spiritual sense, that inspired him to record I Don't Know Where I'm Going But I'm On My Way. Hammond has been given the credit — and to some, the blame — for the persistent roots influence found in the 97's songwriting and sound, and that sound is found here in its distilled form. "Both in my own contributions and in co-writing with Rhett [Miller], I've always tended to push the chug of train songs, the soul of old-time songs and spirituals, the high-lonesome wail of mountain music, and the pure tuneful fun of singing cowboy music."  Hammond's contributions have been some of the group's most engaging, including the lament "Valentine" and "Color of a Lonely Heart is Blue," and with Miller he co-wrote some of the group's best-known songs, among them "Timebomb," "Indefinitely" and "The New Kid."

Hammond completed I Don't Know Where I'm Going but I'm on My Way over the course of 2007 in San Diego, California with producer Mark Neill, with whom Hammond worked on the Old 97's 2004 release Drag It Up. The album uses all acoustic instruments (six- and twelve-string guitars, a harmonium pump-organ), cowboy poetry-style spoken word and instrumentals, and lots of "period" reverb to paint a psychological journey through a world of spiritual trouble and triumph, restlessness, hope, loss, longing, regret, and wonder. Train songs and spirituals abound as Hammond displays his love of all things Carter Family, Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, but with the twist of incorporating the moody approach of ambient artists such as Brian Eno. Like that of his heroes, the music has a minimalist heart, at once serene and severe.

Inspired by the grass-roots ethic of early punk record labels such as Dischord and Touch & Go, Hammond decided to operate DIY. He funded all facets of the CD from recording to manufacturing, and he distributes by dealing directly with independent music stores and mail-order houses. Although he also sells on Amazon.com, Hammond wants you to know, "I fill all my own orders personally. It gives me a chance to occasionally write something thoughtful or joke-y on the mailing box."

Hammond is also excited to have contributed a new track, "Bound for Canaan," to a compilation of Sacred Harp music (also known as "shaped note singing") that was produced by the filmmakers of Awake My Soul, a documentary film about the 200-year history of Sacred Harp worship singing in the U.S. The film was shown in 2007 and 2008 on 120 PBS stations, and was released this year on DVD.  The compilation also features Innocence Mission, John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin, Jim Lauderdale, Carolina Chocolate Drops and Woven Hand (ex-16 Horsepower), among others. For the rest of 2008 Hammond will be performing solo dates between Old 97's touring, and has also begun work on a follow-up project with producer Mark Neill.
