debut

Rick Alvin Shaier streets solo debut “Mantis Preying”

While stationed in Phoenix, AZ during the recording of Miniature Tiger’s “Tell It To The Volcano”, (Rick is also a member of Modern Art act Miniature Tigers) Rick holed up in a friend’s bathroom with a microphone and a Powerbook and went to town.  The end result is the 9 song “vocal composition” coined “Mantis Preying”. By limiting the recording to body parts and vocal gymnastics, Rick began his first journey working with unlimited multi-track arrangements via Digidesign’s Pro Tools.  Bjork’s “Medulla” served as the predominant inspiration behind Rick writing and layering vocals without the use of instruments.

rick-alvinThe songs on “Mantis Preying” feature dense, layered, complicated arrangements that somehow weave a central melody and structure throughout the cacophony of ideas.  This complex blend of rhythms and harmonies cannot seemingly come from one voice and one microphone. Though recorded under the constraints of “vocals only”, it projects a sum much larger than it’s parts, making use of the full sonic spectrum.  The record is completed with the song “Mystery of the Yellow Room” paying tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber by combining a medley of themes from the “Phantom of the Opera”.

Rick spent his formative music years studying piano in steamy, sun drenched, Phoenix, AZ, and graduated to drumming in a few different high school punk bands.  He learned quickly on instruments both stringed and skinned, and began tinkering with 4 tracks and microphones early on in the process.  Driven from an internal realization that he had to get the madness out of his head, vomiting the ideas out on tape became a cathartic endeavor for him.  As these bedroom demo samurai sessions wore on, Rick eventually started labeling these recordings with the moniker “Alvin Band”.  The bonus EP “Lady Portrait”, included in the package, is a latter example of these bedroom sessions.

Lately,  Rick has been rambling around the United States playing drums in Minature Tigers and opening for bands such as Ben Folds, Kevin Devine, and Guster. The Miniature Tigers crew has been performing material from the repertoire of Alvin Band as well.  There is a lot of music to come from young Mr. Schaier, and the combination release of “Mantis Preying”, coupled with the bonus EP “Lady Portrait” serves as a solid introduction into his sorcery. More lunacy on the way…

Jer Coons: Debut Release "SPEAK"

While most kids his age study for midterms, singer-songwriter Jer Coons studies pop. While most twenty-year-old guys attend shows to sneak drinks and hit on girls, Jer Coons watches from the back, observing the guitarist's pedal board and the singer's in-ear monitors (the girls then approach him - an old trick). While most young people pick the music they listen to because it is trendy, Jer Coons listens asking, "What makes this popular" and "Are my songs as memorable?" Despite his idiosyncrasies, from every tweet he posts to every lyric he writes, Jer Coons is instantly familiar and engaging.

jer-coonsTwo decades into life, it seems Jer's studies have finally paid off. The young Vermonter will release his debut CD Speak on September 29. From the graceful power chords of the title track that open the album to the closing, endearing ballad "The Only Trace," listener's can hear Jer's persona captured within each song. There are no "album tracks" or "filler tracks" as they all stand alone as well-executed pop songs, crafted with maturity well beyond Jer's years. His backing band of musicians - all Vermonters as well - keep the songs radio friendly without playing anything they can't recreate live; a feat that many bands spend their whole career trying to achieve.

Though Speak isn't out until fall, the world got a little taste of Jer Coons this June. His first slick and impossibly catchy single "Legs", was featured on the Hollister June in-store play list. While other artists have songs that find their way into a store, most don't get the same reaction. As the song played through out the day in over 6,000 stores, his MySpace plays skyrocketed to over 4,500 per day with "Legs" alone getting 3,000+. All this traffic has turned Jer into the 3rd most popular artist on MySpace from the Green Mountain State after Phish and Grace Potter. At the same time he sold over advance 4,000 singles across the month of June on iTunes. All this is without any other promotion.

"I've been waiting my whole life to make this album," Jer says with a grin. It truly shows. As his debut release, Speak really seems twenty years in the making. The melodies, the lyrics, the production and most of all, Jer's personality sync together perfectly to create a unique brand of Vermont pop.

MONSTERS OF FOLK release DEBUT September 22nd

Monsters of Folk – comprised of Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and singer/songwriter M.Ward – will be releasing their first collaborative album on September 22nd.  The self-titled effort was recorded in Malibu, CA and Omaha, NE, and produced by Mike Mogis.  Although these critically acclaimed artists have shared the stage before, this album marks their first recorded output as a band.  The record will be released in North America on Shangri-La Music, and internationally on Rough Trade (UK/Europe), Spunk Records (Australia/New Zealand) and P-Vine Records (Japan).

Monsters of Folk began as folklore of sorts, when James, Oberst, Ward and Mogis did their first run of shows together in 2004.  Like the musical revue shows that went town to town when rock ‘n’ roll was newly born, the tour was called “An Evening With:  Bright Eyes, Jim James and M. Ward,” although amongst friends and crew, it became affectionately known as the “Monsters of Folk Tour.”  While entertaining audiences coast to coast with gorgeous acoustic melodies and world-weary tales, the foursome vowed to make their way to a studio at some point after the tour’s completion.  Instead,  the songsmiths went on to individually release some of rock music’s most exciting and essential albums of the last five years – Bright Eyes’ I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning & Cassadaga; My Morning Jacket’s Z & Evil Urges; M. Ward’s Post War and Hold Time.   Never ones to forget their promise, when downtime presented itself, they convened in the studio multiple times over two years, with Mogis at the helm of their first recorded effort.  The result is as stunning and storied as you would expect it to be.

All four members play every instrument on the album, supplying everything from drum kills to cascading backing vocals.  The songs – some road-worn fables, some intimate and intricate with electronic elements, some woozy and sun-soaked – are everything one expects from these four musical minds collaborating together.  The album exudes a warm, organic spaciousness, filled by brilliant choruses, intoxicating harmonies and effortless melodies, as each member brings his own strengths to the table to create one perfect whole.

Track List in full:

1.    Dear God (sincerely M.O.F.)
2.    Say Please
3.    Whole Lotta Losin'
4.    Temazcal
5.    The Right Place
6.    Baby Boomer
7.    Man Named Truth
8.    Goodway
9.    Ahead of the Curve
10.  Slow Down Jo

Harlem Shakes To Release Debut LP 'Technicolor Health'

Technicolor Health- for the Grateful Web

Harlem Shakes as we know it were born in 2006, after an earlier incarnation of the band went to college and went nuts. Lexy still sings lead, and Brent still plays the drums (and drum machine), but now Kendrick plays keyboards, Jose plays bass, and Todd plays guitar. Everyone sings.  Harlem Shakes have toured with Deerhoof, Vampire Weekend, and Beirut, and opened for Wire, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Arctic Monkeys, and various other famous bands with animal names. Burning Birthdays, the band's self-released debut EP, came out in 2007 to wide acclaim, earning generous praise from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, SPIN, AllMusic, Stylus, The Village Voice, and the blogs. Pitchfork complimented their "frenetic clip of hooks," and sometime Magnetic Field-er LD Beghtol of The Voice called them "lethally charming" and one of "the Best of New York." The band is sure that all this good luck must come at some kind of lurking, damning cost.

After extensive touring and a bit of schooling, the band got back together with Chris Zane (Les Savy Fav, The Walkmen, Passion Pit, White Rabbits) to record their first full-length album, Technicolor Health. The result is one of the most quietly ambitious pop albums in ages. Much like Blur fused English pop traditions and contemporary sonics to forge Brit Pop, Harlem Shakes meld the Great American Songbook with unmistakably contemporary textures, creating what one might call "Am Pop." Influences as disparate as the Band, Randy Newman, Carlos Santana and Spank Rock inform the soundscapes, but the vibe is too coherent to be called eclectic. Technicolor Health invokes the synthesized Latin percussion that plays outside the band's apartments every night as they're trying to fall asleep, and the classic rock radio they listen to with hilarious regularity. These are social songs: instruments meander, trade off lines, and counter each other's rhythms and melodies, but ultimately they come together again on the chorus, or in an ecstatic outro or bridge, for a singalong family dinner. Harlem Shakes also have an unapologetically literary lilt; writers like Leonard Michaels, Wislawa Szymborska, and David Berman echo in Lexy's lyrics.

Technicolor Health was made after and during some tough times (involving serious sickness) for the band. The record captures the weary, hopeful, and sometimes triumphal vibe of that period in their lives. Above all, the album is about surviving abject shittiness. But it's also about what new-wave bands and new-wave revival bands call, "modern life," as lived by five thoughtful men in their early and mid-twenties during a weird, sometimes miserable, mostly thrilling historical moment. Harlem Shakes have been obsessed by pop music their whole lives, and after all the reiterations, they still have great faith in its power to make you and them feel a little better about things, and to say something vital, and God willing, maybe even enduring.

Debut Album From Joey+Rory Streets October 28th

Joey + Rory- for the Grateful Web

Joey+Rory, along with Grammy-award winning producer Carl Jackson, have put the finishing touches on their debut album, The Life Of A Song, to be released by Vanguard/Sugar Hill Records on October 28th.  Having produced such greats as Alison Krauss and Merle Haggard, Jackson proved the perfect choice to help husband and wife team Rory Feek and Joey Martin create a traditional country album, seasoned with acoustic elements and equal doses of humor and sincerity.

"Working with Joey+Rory is a total joy for me," states Jackson.  "They are the real deal, not an act simply called 'country' whose music contradicts that label.  What makes it even more special is that I believe the only thing they love more than a great country song is each other."

Joey+Rory are nothing if not authentic; The Life Of A Song might be listened to as a soundtrack to their simple country lifestyle.  The couple resides in an 1870's farmhouse in tiny Hardison Mill, TN, where Joey helps run a nearby family restaurant called Marcy Jo's Mealhouse.  Perfectly in their element, Joey+Rory sing of scuffed cowboy boots ("Boots"), dusty rodeo arenas ("Rodeo"), and cherished vinyl records ("Sweet Emmylou").  They beg the listener to sing or dance along (the brash and buoyant "Cheater Cheater") before hushing the room with the lovely austerity of "Heart of the Wood."  Even the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic "Free Bird" is putty reinvented in the hands of this pair, as adventurous as they are respectful of country music's roots.

Together, the couple contributed their songwriting talents to seven of the album's 12 tracks, including the lead single, "Cheater Cheater."  Already an established songwriter and founding partner of Nashville publishing company Giantslayer Music, Rory has three #1 hits to his credit (Blake Shelton's "Some Beach", Clay Walker's "The Chain of Love" and Collin Raye's "Someone You Used To Know"), and has had cuts by Kenny Chesney, Randy Travis, Terri Clark, Mark Wills, Reba McEntire, Waylon Jennings, Lorrie Morgan, Buck Owens, John Michael Montgomery and Charlie Pride, among others.

Joey, who performs lead vocals for the duo, is also a veteran recording artist (previously signed to Sony Records, her debut album and single were never released). The pair only started performing as a duo for the audition of CMT's hit series Can You Duet in early 2008.  The pairing proved to be a hit with thousands of fans as well as Naomi Judd, one of the show's judges and Joey+Rory's most fervent supporter.  CMT is now home to Joey+Rory's debut video for "Cheater Cheater," currently in medium rotation.

MIKE RELM TO RELEASE HIS DEBUT ARTIST ALBUM 'SPECTACLE'

Mike Helm- for the Grateful Web

As an audio/visualist and mash-up DJ, MIKE RELM has become world famous for his mind-melting real time performances. But with the advent of SPECTACLE, his exciting debut studio album due out September 23 on his Radio Fryer label, the San Francisco-based musical talent has masterfully upped his game. On the heels of his recent mesmerizing DVD Clown Alley and the acclaim of his riveting 2005 CD mixtape Radio Fryer, the bespectacled and suit-clad Relm steps into the role of electronic music maestro while effortlessly reinforcing his long-standing reputation for innovation.

By collaborating with respected underground talents like Mr. Lif, The Gift of Gab, Morningwood and Lateef the Truthspeaker, along with producer Patrick Palaad on Spectacle, Relm's sonic realm is as diverse as it is ingenious. Check out can't-miss offerings like "Body Rock" - complete with a twangy guitar line and a celebratory tack destined for the dance floor - and the disc's contagious first single "My Heart" that boasts razor-sharp delivery by rapper Adeem and vocalist Adrian Hartley, a veteran of both Blue Man Group and Fischerspooner.

After befriending Hartley during a lengthy, high profile stint opening for Blue Man Group, Relm knew he had to have her lend vocals to the latter, capturing her memorable performance in a Philadelphia hotel room of all places. Next came the New Hampshire-based Adeem. "We met during one of those 'Minivan-Days Inn' tours," Mike says. "But I knew I wanted to work with him. He was on this list of people I kept that I knew I'd ask and he did such a great job with that track."

With "My Heart" front-and-center in Relm's plan for global domination, it's matched by the equally powerful "You Break," which thrives on a similar and infectious arrangement and is elevated by the adept street prose of Mr. Lif. "That song, like almost everything I construct, started with a beat," Relm explains. "It's just one of those beats that I let people listen to and everyone wanted to get on it." Another notable track on Spectacle is "Hot To Trot" which features vocals and drums by percussionist/beat maker Alfredo Ortiz (Money Mark, Chromeo, Ozomatli).

MIKE RELM adds tremendous energy to any event and has a striking stage presence. He has toured with many different types of artists from the Blue Man Group to most recently Tony Hawk as the featured musical guest on the Boom Boom HuckJam tour, and has appeared at many major music festivals including Coachella, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, Summer Sonic and Mt. Fuji in Japan as well as most of the major European festivals.

RELM is known for live performances which feature a series of audio mash-ups with video images, manipulated in real-time. His other credits include performances for a San Francisco Giants vs. Oakland A's baseball game and the closing ceremonies of the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro. He completed remixes for Adult Swim in conjunction with the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie, scored a short film for the Disney Channel series Too Many Robots and created a four-song mega mix for Yo Gabba Gabba (Nickelodeon). RELM also stars in an international TV spot for HSBC Bank, directed by Stacy Wall.

Zach Deputy Releases Debut Studio Album

Zach Deputy- for the Grateful Web

Out Of The Water (Deputy Records, 2008), Zach Deputy's much anticipated studio album, will be released on June 24th. After years of selling and giving away thousands live recordings, Zach Deputy and his musical partner Paul Kearns are excited to share this studio recording with fans. "At times it seemed like it would never come out," said Zach Deputy. "I was touring non-stop and couldn't find more than a day in a row to record in Atlanta." This album represents one of the many musical facets of Zach Deputy. Fans know that Zach and Paul perform as a duo, with Zach creating next generation live looping, accompanied by Kearns on percussion, to create a full band sound. Out Of The Water, on the other hand, features a full complement of some of the South's top musicians, including Mose Davis on Hammond B-3 organ (The Isley Brothers, Funkadelic, David Ruffin, etc.), bassist Sam Sims (Maxwell, Michael Jackson, kd Lang, etc.) and drummer Sonny Emory (Earth Wind & Fire, Steely Dan, B-52s, etc.). Despite the accomplished sidemen available to him, Zach Deputy still plays all of the instruments on some tracks, and is credited with vocals, acoustic, electric, slide and treated guitars, bass, keyboards, synths, drums, percussion and marimba on the recording, in addition to writing all of the words and music. He also lent a hand in the production, from engineering to mixing, and is the co-producer of the album.

Moving seamlessly from sultry R&B to soulful funk to love ballads, Out Of The Water offers 12 tracks that capture Zach Deputy's diverse musical and cultural influences. A South Carolina native, Deputy's family tree has Puerto Rican and Cruzan roots. Thus, the tropical sounds of Calypso and dancehall rhythms coexist happily with hip hop and rock beats, all forming a foundation for the dexterous guitar work and multiple octave vocal stylings of this talented young artist. Often at a loss for describing his own music, Zach Deputy addresses his influences in his comical way: "I was inspired by Bobby McFerrin and James Brown, but blown away by Ray Charles. I like to think of my music as the illegitimate bastard child of these three greats, raised by Michael Jackson in a beachside shack on St. Croix." Unheard in these references is Deputy's love of old school conscious hip hop, but this can be found live and on the record, as Zach can flow with the best of them, improvising smooth lyrical gymnastics as easily as he jams on his instrument.

Out Of The Water will be available online at iTunes, Rhapsody, eMusic, Napster, GrooveMobile and Groupy Tunes in time for the official release date. Out Of The Water will also be available at select retailers through the Homegrown Music Network's (HGMN) distribution service. Of course, the best place to buy it is at a show. Zach Deputy will be touring non-stop in support of the new release, from the Mississippi to the Atlantic, Miami to Minneapolis to Montreal and all stops in between. Pre-orders are available through zachdeputy.com, cdfreedom.com and homegrownmusic.net. For more info., a complete tour schedule and much more, visit www.zachdeputy.com.

American Babies Re-Release Debut Album Today

Photo by Jesse Meyer- for the Grateful Web

Like all brilliant, beautifully rendered albums, American Babies' new release washes over you with wit, wisdom and tenderness. For the self-titled debut, re-released April 1, 2008 on SCI Fidelity Records, Philadelphia-bred front man and songwriter Tom Hamilton has combined his urbane mindset with the country music of his childhood, creating work that places him alongside career artists like Ryan Adams, Conor Oberst, and Jeff Tweedy. The buzz is already on.

American Babies was silently self-released by the band a year ago. But the secret soon spread. Together for a little more than a year, American Babies have already landed several influential gigs, including much-talked-about performances at Philly's World Music Café, Chicago's Wicker Park Festival and Bonnaroo. In addition, American Babies have become "next-big-thing" darlings for such prestigious showcases as the Paste/OurStage South by Southwest Opening Night Party at Stubb's and the Rhapsody/CMJ Conference Kickoff Event. The chemistry and magical X-factor this band possesses is already apparent, even contagious.

At the time Hamilton started writing acoustic roots material like the titled track, "American Babies," he was far from home. He'd been writing, performing, and enjoying a swell of critical acclaim with his band Brothers Past - - yielding a wellspring of positive notices that could possibly have been his ticket to the big time. But his heart wasn't entirely in the process as it stood. "For some time, I had wanted to get more into the music I grew up on."

Which is exactly what he did. He returned to the Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash records his dad made him listen to as a kid, but heard them differently this time. The sounds inspired him wholeheartedly and he began writing in a similar vein. "I don't want to get too deep on it," says Hamilton, a candid realist who equates writing songs with any other job. "I write songs and I play the guitar. It is what I do and it is who I am."

Some people undertake their occupations better than others, though, and Hamilton is a top-rate songwriter. And with the accompaniment of bassist/brother Jim Hamilton and drummer Joe Russo, and guitarist Scott Metzger, American Babies has developed into something extraordinary.

Look for American Babies on tour this summer.  Dates to be announced soon.
