Los Angeles based band Orgone is many souls with a cosmic connection, a natural creative force and musicians who have played together for years. They are self schooled and continue to shape their musical voice as a solid unit of guys who hang, spin records and jam out their shared inspirations. With a rooted sense of funk, soul, afrobeat, deep rhythms and an intimate understanding of dj culture as well as each others’ individual talents, Orgone seamlessly slides through multiple styles and dynamic performances. The group continuously injects whatever they play with a heavy brand of raw funk power.

The band’s reputation amongst the funk, soul, and hip hop fraternity is further backed-up by an impressive and ever growing resume that expands their reach. This includes a spot in an Adidas campaign, a tour with and backing band for Bun B (from UGK), Pharoahe Monch, Plantlife (including a BBC performance for Jools Holland), Little Brother, Nice and Smooth, Black Sheep and New Orleans funk legend Eddie Bo at a Hurricane Katrina benefit. Members of Orgone also have featured in the make-up of Ubiquity acts the Lions, Connie Price and the Keystones, Breakestra, and have performed with the Pharcyde, De La Soul, Too Short, Macy Gray among many others. To top it off, most of the group can be heard on recent major recordings by Alicia Keys, CeeLo, Estelle, Anthony Hamilton, Jennifer Hudson, Solange Knowles and many other R&B/Soul artists.

Orgone continues to tour, impressing audiences and winning new fans at festivals & clubs nationally and overseas. 2009 saw the release of their second fully independent CD “bacano”, a collection of all original cold-blooded funk gems representing what’s always been going down in Orgone’s funky, sweaty home-grown recording spot. It’s a recorded history of the band and its musical family throwing down: check the lethal neck-busting bass intro of founding member Tim Glum on “You Already Doin It”, the Detroit thump of bassist Dale Jennings on the deep hypnotic funk soundscape of “Vibromeyer”, the dance floor soul of singer Gino Garafalo on the undeniably hip-shaking “Come Around” and the sub-atomic gut punch of Orgone bassist Ethan Phillips on the heavy psychedelic groove of “Hott Karl”.

Non-Traditional Reggae Artist Finding Increasingly Diverse Audience

As MC Zulu continues to establish his non-traditional Reggae/Dancehall style, radio stations and sponsors alike are falling into place. His “Crowd Control” EP made an impressive debut at #24 on CMJs Hip-Hop charts, and is now being added to the World and RPM categories.

MC Zulu’s sound has proved most attractive to music supervisors as well. His song “Higher Velocity” with producer BIONIK can be heard as part of Puma’s Faas Lab campaign. The commercial features a verse from Hip-Hop luminary Aceyalone, and a cameo by Fastest Man in the World, Usain Bolt.

Zulu also recently licensed the acappella version of his song “No Lies” for a remix competition with world-renowned producer Dub Gabriel. The competition was sponsored by Akai, Ableton and Dubspot. Another track, “Lose Control” with Kush Arora has been licensed by Tapulous for the popular Riddim Ribbon iPhone app.

When questioned about his unusually high profile ventures, Zulu explains that as rejections from record labels piled up, his resolve increased. He has headlined tours and amassed his fan base one by one, in such contrasting regions of the world as Israel, Slovakia and Australia. The “Crowd Control” full length entitled “Electro Track Therapy” is due in stores later this year.

Disco Biscuits Announce 2011 Bisco Inferno

The Disco Biscuits are pleased to announce that the Biscuits will be returning to Red Rocks Amphitheater for the third installment of BISCO INFERNO on Saturday May 28th! This year, we will lead up to the main event with two kickoff shows at the Ogden Theatre in Denver on Thursday and Friday May 26-27 - tickets for these dates will only be available as part of a three-night package.

The supporting cast at Red Rocks is in place as well! In addition to our two long Biscuits sets, we are excited to be joined first and foremost by killer dubstep DJ/producer Rusko. For fans of hip-hop, we've got Big Boi, famous for being half of the legendary ATL group Outkast. And warming up the show will be two more incredible acts Emancipator and BoomBox.

Ice Cube @ The Boulder Theatre | 2/26/11

As his popularity continues to grow through movies and television, Ice Cube remains committed to the foundation of his career: Hip-Hop music. Quick to emphasize that he is and always will be a B-Boy, dedicated to writing vivid rhymes, delivering stellar stage performances and making dope hip-hop records. I Am The West is poised to be another high point in that mission. Very few can make as bold a statement as I Am The West and even fewer can dispute Ice Cube's right to stake the claim. His hall of fame resume alone would be enough to own the title, but this album is an opportunity to raise the bar even higher.

Tony Adamo's What Is Hip

The recording of the song "What is Hip" on singer/songwriter, Tony Adamo's new CD (entitled WHAT IS HIP) came from a suggestion made by the legendary horn player and Tower of Power co-founder, Stephen "Doc" Kupka. During a recording session with Adamo and his producer/guitarist, Jerry Stucker, "Doc" suggested several TOP songs Adamo might want to cover. Adamo choose "What is Hip" and "This Time it's Real." Kupka, along with jazz great, Eddie Henderson hold up the horn section on "Hip." In the re-grooved "This Time It's Real," Mic Gillette, funk icon in his own right, wrote the horn arrangement and plays (trumpet & trombone) along with TOP horn member, Tom E. Poltzer (tenor sax). Poltzer plays lead solo with "Doc" Kupka on bari sax.

Talk about a kool struttin' and soul funkin' sound. Adamo is deep in the groove on these two Tower of Power hits. Producer/guitarist, Jerry Stucker loaded up the WHAT IS HIP CD with big city cool. Kraddy's 2011 Labyrinth Tour w/ Archnemesis @ the Fox

The Los Angeles-based electronic-music Don known as Kraddy has always brought the undiluted sound of the underground to new audiences. From his work as a founding member of the infamous Glitch Mob to his groundbreaking solo work, Kraddy (born Matthew Kratz) has always been known for shattering genre conventions while moving crowds everywhere from Red Rocks to L.A.’s famed Low End Theory club. From his breakthrough 2008 hit “Android Porn” to the innovative bangers comprising his latest e.p. Labyrinth (Alpha Pup), Kraddy continues to hybridize hip-hop, dubstep and dancehall with face-melting panache and rock and roll bravado. But the man himself was as surprised as anyone when the mainstream crossed over to him.

With its epic melody, dramatic builds, and speaker-shuddering bass drops, “Android Porn” was hailed as the anthem of the decidedly maverick “glitch hop” movement, getting remixed by everyone from Mochipet to breakbeat icon Si Begg. Soon, however, the song started appearing beyond the sweaty, crowded dancefloors that are Kraddy’s mainstay, getting licensed for TV shows like “America’s Best Dance Crew” and “America’s Got Talent”; a Hungarian dance troupe’s outrageous performance to the track quickly became a YouTube sensation. Having a format-obliterating viral smash made it easier when it became clear his alliance with West Coast electronic-music legends the Glitch Mob was ending. “It was an amicable split—we all agreed I’m more of a solo artist,” Kraddy recalls. “With the Mob, it was hard to have a clear voice; I was restrained—it grew apparent that I had a different vision then they did. ‘Android Porn’ kicked a door open in my mind, and I saw a whole host of new possibilities.”

Indeed, those fresh avenues are explored to the fullest on Kraddy’s latest e.p. Labyrinth, overflowing with grandiose symphonics, soulful emotion, pounding rhythm and crunching low end. “My new material had to cause blunt force trauma,” he explains. “These songs are as heartfelt as it gets, but chug like a locomotive. I just love hotwiring thick analog grunge with those unexpected digital tweaks.” Labyrinth also represents Kraddy’s new association with the revered Alpha Pup label, home to future-music geniuses like Nosaj Thing and Free The Robots. “I really wanted to work with Alpha Pup,” Kraddy says. “[Label founder] Daddy Kev is a visionary: he always has a vista of what’s going to happen next with music, and I wanted to be a part of that.”

Labyrinth signifies the pinnacle of a musical evolution that began when Kraddy moved from his native New York to San Francisco. He soon became a mainstay of that city’s beat scene: changing the game with his 2003 debut album, Truth Has No Path, Kraddy continued to gain notoriety with a series of unorthodox releases, from “Faux Show” (a raw remix of Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya”) to his second full-length, The Illegal Album, which fused Kraddy’s radical production chops with classic hip-hop/dancehall a capellas. Moving to L.A while releasing notable remixes for the Infesticons and Mochipet and a series of coveted bootleg mashups and mixtapes all built to Kraddy’s latest evolution, which has moved beyond pure electronics: his live shows will soon feature a live drummer, taking Kraddy even closer to a style he calls “Led Zeppelin 3000.” “It’s full and epic and shameless, but Kraddy-style,” he laughs. “That’s what I’ve always want to do, and now I’m doing it.”

Siriusmo To Preview Debut Album, Mosaik

After releasing dozens of singles & EPs on various Berlin-based record labels and remixing artists, including Scissor Sisters, Gossip, Chikinki, Simian Mobile Disco, Boys Noize, Digitalism, Chromeo, A-Trak, Munk and more, for over a decade, the inimitable Berlin producer, graffiti artist, ghost-painter & illustrator, Siriusmo (aka Moritz Friedrich), is set to release his debut album, Mosaik, March 1st on Monkeytown Records.

With Siriusmo’s previous releases striding confidently through a rich array of genres – from dubstep to disco, hip-hop to house, electro to experimental – his work is invested with incomparable diversity, eschewing outright any danger of a four-four snooze-fest over the course of an hour. Indeed, in its premeditated hodgepodge of styles, composite sonic totality and rugged texture, Mosaik couldn’t be more of a fitting rubric. Leading up this full-length release, Siriusmo is offering listeners a preview of what’s to come by featuring snippets of the record on his Soundcloud page. Several bits are already up, and the rest will be added by March 1st.

Betraying influences from the 70s to the present day and beyond, one foot keeps the door to the past ajar while the other kicks the door to the future wide open. The palpable funk and thumb-slap bass of opener, “High Together”, the pop-baroque of “Idiologie” and warped rap of “Bad Idea” all point towards Moritz's grounding in the records of Stevie Wonder, The Beatles and plentiful helpings of hip-hop. Any hint of nostalgia, however, is dragged kicking and screaming into a 21st Century discotheque where the bass is twisted, the beats are laden and space-age grandiosity envelops the whole.

Siriusmo’s timbre-palette is strikingly visceral and his understanding and appreciation of the intricacies of harmony prevail; every note is a corporal experience as well as an aural one. And for every drop of dancefloor sweat, there’s a soothing breeze to cool down. Individual melodic lines dance impishly around one another on “Signal”, for example, as sonic warmth is woven on a loom in your ears. Throughout Mosaik, Siriusmo makes an arresting switch from the beefy to the beautiful, from the body to the mind, as elegantly tapped organ keys play a melody with soulful poise. It's this type of canny counterpoint that provides the stitching throughout Mosaik's vibrant patchwork.

RJD2 Releases The Glow Remixes EP as Free Download

Renowned producer/DJ RJD2 and his label Electrical Connections are jump-starting the new year with the release of The Glow Remixes on January 3. The three-track digital EP is now available as a free download exclusively through Bandcamp and includes “The Glow” original music video.

The Glow Remixes features new remixes of “The Glow”, a track from his acclaimed 2010 release, The Colossus. One track comes from Paolo Palazzo, who was selected by fans as the winner of RJD2’s recent remix contest. The Chicago heavyweight DJ duo Flosstradamus also gives the original cut a dancefloor-friendly makeover, while Candy Panther completes the EP with his laid back, mid-tempo club adaptation.

Praxis Collaborate w/ Iggy Pop, Serj Tankian & Mike Patton

On January 25th, the eclectic, experimental hard rock project Praxis will release the latest creation, a bone-crunching new album titled Profanation: Preparation for a Coming Darkness.  The new album finds the trio once again collaborating with various musicians, this time with the spotlight clearly on lead vocalists.  Among them are Iggy Pop, System Of A Downs Serj Tankian, Mike Patton, RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ, Doctor Israel, Wu-Tang protégé Killah Priest and Jamaica-born toaster Hawk.

The US release of Profanation comes with two live bonus tracks not included in the rare, Japan-only import.  The album is also one of the last recordings to feature the gothic futurist RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ, an incredibly multi-talented visual artist, hip hop icon, performance artist, and one of the most unique humans to patrol this planet.

Since 1992, the core members of Praxis – Buckethead (guitars), Bill Laswell (bass), and Brain (drums) – has churned out an eclectic series of albums rooted in aggressive avant-rock improv with slabs of hip-hop, psychedelic, funk thrown in.  On top of that, a constantly morphing army of innovators including John Zorn, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Yamantaka Eye(Boredoms), Grandmixer DXT, and scores more have contributed to past Praxis live and studio projects – each one a unique musical experiment.

Copyright Criminals Airs on November 29th on PBS

Copyright Criminals, the acclaimed documentary that charts the history of sampling in hip-hop and its modern clashes with outdated copyright law, will air on PBS’ Emmy Award-winning series “Independent Lens” the week of Nov. 29 (check local listings).

The film features in-depth interviews with Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Hank Shocklee, De La Soul, funk pioneer George Clinton, James Brown’s “Funky Drummer” Clyde Stubblefield, producer Steve Albini and many others.

Filmmakers Benjamin Franzen and Kembrew McLeod showcase not only hip-hop sampling’s pioneering artists, but also those whose work has been sampled thoroughly. Ultimately, they ask how should we fix our copyright laws to both encourage creativity with 21st century tools and still ensure that “original” creators get paid for their work?

The broadcast comes as creative technology advances on a near-weekly basis. When the last copyright law was passed in 1998, only 26 percent of homes had Internet access. Today, young people can film, soundtrack, edit and distribute movies globally, all from their mobile phones.

Meanwhile, artists like Girl Talk are shining bright lights on issues of copyright and creativity. Girl Talk’s new album, All Day, released for free Nov. 15, includes more than 350 samples.

Copyright Criminals’ innovative visuals include video remixes by Eclectic Method that illustrate for the viewer precisely what snippets of sound they’re hearing in dense sampling collages.

The film, which Rolling Stone’s Rob Sheffield called “amazing,” was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. USA Today called Copyright Criminals “a compelling and insightful documentary illuminating both sides of a hotly debated issue.”

Director and producer Benjamin Franzen is the owner of the Atlanta-based production company Changing Images. Executive producer and writer Kembrew McLeod is an associate professor of communications studies at the University of Iowa, and author of Freedom of Expression®: Resistance and Repression in the Age of Intellectual Property, among other books.
