10th Anniversary Production of The Christmas Revels

Founded in 2000, Rocky Mountain Revels is a non-profit arts organization dedicated to promoting public education, understanding, and appreciation of traditional music, dance, drama, and ritual through participatory theater and communal celebration.

We have created Revels productions of Medieval, Renaissance, pan-Celtic, Victorian, Scottish, Irish Immigrants, and Colorado Pioneers. Each year, beginning in the late summer, nearly 100 people from all over the greater Boulder and Denver area come together to rehearse and create a production with full historical costumes, live traditional music, and authentic dance and theater.

Revels productions are a unique blend of amateur and professional performers. Guest artists appearing with Rocky Mountain Revels have included North American step dancing champion Alexandra Siega, Native American flutist Leon Littlebird, folk artist David Jones, Boulder Philharmonic concertmaster Gregory Walker, and many others.

Asobi Seksu Announce 2011 North American Winter Tour

Polyvinyl recording artist Asobi Seksu has announced the release of their highly anticipated 4th album, Fluorescence, available February 14th in UK/Europe and 15th in North America on CD, LP (Gatefold Jacket, 180 gram pink vinyl limited edition of 1,500) and digital formats.  The album features the lead single, "Trails", which is available now as an MP3 download. There will also be a video for the track in early 2011.  The album features artwork from acclaimed designer Vaughan Oliver (Cocteau Twins, Pixies).  The album is available for pre-order now on the Polyvinyl website at www.polyvinylrecords.com/fluorescence.

The signs in Chris Zane’s studio couldn’t have been any clearer: “Don’t Overthink It” and one simple word—“BOLD.”

Or as Asobi Seksu guitarist/singer James Hanna puts it, “This time, our agenda was to not have one at all; to be mellow about the entire process instead of obsessing over everything.”

Maybe mellow isn’t the right word, unless he’s comparing the band’s fourth proper full-length (Fluorescence) to a coiled-up cobra or unconscious crocodile— temperamental types that are one false move away from striking. After all, “Coming Up” sets the scene by plowing into beehive-like synth lines and warp speed washes of dream-pop that leave you wondering just what the hell is going on.

Things don’t let up on “Trails” either, as singer/keyboardist Yuki Chikudate sets her immaculate melodies against a barrage of battery-powered chords. Catchy and chaotic to the core, the sky-scraping song pays homage to the pitch-perfect songwriting of the ‘60s by chartering a yellow submarine to the moon.

And when the Brooklyn-based quartet (rounded out by bassist Billy Pavone and drummer Larry Gorman) finally hits the ground, their color-saturated soundscapes don’t get dull or cold. They get even brighter, as Fluorescence’s many shades shift with each passing song. That includes everything from the expansive/erratic—and yet, oh-so- poppy—prog movements of “Leave the Drummer Out There” to the weightless balladry of “Ocean,” a track that channels its title with swollen synths and beats that bob and weave through the murkiest waters around.

“James likes to get a lot more abstract with the music,” says Chikudate, “So Chris (Asobi Seksu’s longtime producer) will often try and reign him in.”

“I like to see how far we can take a song before pulling back a bit,” explains Hanna. “Like I’ll say that 100 vocal tracks would sound great in a spot where we only need 40.”

And since Asobi Seksu have spent the past decade refining their bombastic but beautiful blend of hailstorm hooks and fog-shrouded 4AD-isms (including last year’s special acoustic album, Rewolf), they knew exactly what to do with all of that restlessness: embrace it.

The Concretes Announce First North American Tour in Four Years!

Sweden’s dreamy indie-pop ensemble The Concretes dropped their new album, WYWH, last Tuesday, November 9th via Friendly Fire Recordings, and now we’re excited to announce their first North American tour in four years, which will take place between January and March 2011! The tour is split in two, with the band hitting markets on the East Coast, Midwest and Canada in January, then returning in February/March to tackle the West Coast.

WYWH sees The Concretes in their new, improved incarnation- former drummer Lisa Milberg has stepped out from behind the drum kit to take over lead vocals after the departure of Victoria Bergsman. The album has a dreamy, ethereal disco feel, and features less guitar, more keyboards, bass, and deep grooves, while maintaining the irresistable melodies that give The Concretes the sound that they’ve come to define.

deadmau5 to release new album '4x4=12' december 6

Anyone that attended a deadmau5 show in North America this year would have experienced electrifying live renderings of material from his first full length artist album 4x4=12, due out December 6 on Ultra Music.  Performing in front of hundreds of thousands at major festivals and venues from coast to coast including Coachella, Bonnaroo, Electric Daisy Carnival, Austin City Limits and Treasure Island to name a few, electronic music’s most talked-about artist and producer unveiled a wide range of new songs to accompany his roof-raising visual show.

With his revolutionary LED mau5head which flashed space scenes and robot smiley faces, deadmau5--at his full production shows and extended sets at his “unhooked” gigs--highlighted his sets with tracks like “Cthulhu Sleeps,” “Some Cords” and the atmospheric track “Raise Your Weapon” featuring Picture Book singer Greta Svabo Bech.

Also included on 4x4=12 is the deadmau5 vs. Wolfgang Gartner collaboration “Animal Rights,” which Beatport described as “…a huge club record that combines the styles of both producers and has been heavily compared to Daft Punk. We here at Beatport welcome the new direction and give it our thumbs up.”

The album’s next single “Sofi Needs A Ladder,” featuring a vivacious delivery by vocalist Sofi, made its live debut this past March at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami where deadmau5 was joined by Sofi and iconic drummer Tommy Lee in front of 50,000 fans and the track has been the opening piece on his current tour. Ultra Music will make it available on October 31.  Other highlights from the album include “One Trick Pony,” which Sofi also appears on, and the Michael Woods remix of “I Said,” a deadmau5 collaboration with U.K. DJ/producer Chris Lake.

In addition to many of the high-profile performances, 2010 has been a spectacular year thus far for the Toronto-based deadmau5.  He served as the MTV Video Music Award’s House Artist in September where Travie McCoy, Jason Derulo, and Robyn performed never-before-heard mau5-mixes of their current hit singles with him during the show.  He also made guest appearances on hit television shows “Gossip Girl” and “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” Meanwhile, gaming fans can now find deadmau5 starring as an in-game playable character in Activision Publishing Inc.’s DJ Hero 2. (His smash #1 Billboard single “Ghosts ‘n Stuff”—which appeared on his last mix album For Lack of a Better Name (Ultra Music)—is also included on the game’s soundtrack.)

Recently profiled with a feature in Rolling Stone’s “Hot List” issue, deadmau5 will make his last North American appearances this year with three shows at New York City’s legendary Roseland Ballroom October 28, 29 & 30, the Voodoo Experience in New Orleans October 31 and a New Years Eve show December 31 at the Shaw Conference Center in Edmonton, Canada. The first two nights of his Roseland Ballroom ‘trifecta’ shows will feature his powerful festival show supported by a fantastic cast of guests such as Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes, Erol Alkan, Afrojack and JDH & Dave P.  The final night, for his “unhooked” show, will feature his hit smash “I Remember” collaborator Kaskade as well as Calvin Harris, Pete Tong and Sleepy & Boo. deadmau5 will bring his full production show to Voodoo and his Edmonton ‘Mau5quarade’ NYE night also featuring guests Skrillex, Showtek, Mike De Rosa, Mikey Wong and Seelo Mondo.

In addition to a full album format, Ultra Music is also making 4x4=12 available via the iTunes Complete My Album program which permits single purchases through the digital retailer to apply for the full album when it releases.  Following “Sofi Needs A Latter” on October 31 will be “Some Chords” on November 7, “Right This Second” on November 14, “Bad Selection” on November 21 and “Raise Your Weapon” on November 28.

The complete track listing for 4x4=12 is:

1. Some Chords

5. Animal Rights

6. I Said (Michael Woods Remix)

Singer/Songwriter Tift Merritt Returns With See You On The Moon

See You On the Moon is Tift Merritt's most visceral work to date. A deeply centered departure, these focused and creative musical short stories find Tift at the height of her powers. "I wanted to make
a really direct record. I wanted to take everything to a place that was less labored, of more depth. Open space, real strength. There was a certain feeling of inevitability about it. Like I found these songs whole."
To bring her musical short stories to life, Merritt recruited Tucker Martine, best known for his work with Bill Frisell, The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, Laura Veirs, Spoon, and as one of Paste magazine's top ten producers of the decade. Martine produced, recorded and mixed the record while receiving a detailed tour of Tift's native turf.  "It made a lot of sense to take this record back to North Carolina,” she added. “Build a fort in our own backyard." With longtime band mates Zeke Hutchins on drums, Jay Brown on bass and vocals, and guitar player Scott McCall, the Martine-Merritt partnership sounds firmly anchored in the deep water of home while deliberately and wholeheartedly venturing from the docks. "Tucker has such a gentle way of bringing the best out of people, of taking the time to see what you are really made of and getting at, and coaxing you further from there. We wanted to come at things from different directions, not go straight for a band combo, really build around the songs rather than some idea of how things were supposed to happen.  I played more instruments on this record than any other I've made."  At heart, See You On the Moon is a profoundly focused Tift doing what she does best better than she ever has - poignant writing and performing welded to the steady pursuit of new places. Joining the ‘Moon’ sessions were, among others, celebrated pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz and My Morning Jacket’s Yim Yames who adds hauntingly beautiful harmony to album centerpiece Feel of the World.
In her nascent career, Tift Merritt has already produced an impressive body of work and earned a passionate, dedicated audience. Her live performances, both with her band and on her own, are similarly riveting. Tift's preceding albums are 2002’s debut Bramble Rose, 2005’s Grammy nominated Tambourine, and 2008’s widely acclaimed Another Country. 2010’s stellar See You On The Moon is a most important step forward in a remarkable artistic journey that continues to search, penetrate, and surprise.

Railroad Earth: New Album, New Bassist - On TOUR

After celebrating the end of their first decade together with a massive fan release, Railroad Earth Retrospective: 2001-2009, the tightly-woven unit of Railroad Earth is embarking on a new chapter in their musical journey. The rootsy Americana ensemble will hit the stage again on their first tour of 2010 with a new bass player, a new record deal (One Haven Music), and a new album in the can (to be released late Summer 2010) for what is expected to be a great year for the revitalized Railroad Earth. With Spring tour dates mostly focused on the Eastern Seaboard, fans can expect an newly energized live show with surprises around every bend.

After coming off a highly successful 2009, Railroad Earth is preparing for another year of sold-out theaters and large club performances. The band has built up some incredible steam over the past few years with highly notable performances on some of the most prestigious stages in the country, including; the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rothbury, 10,000 Lakes Festival and many more.

Collectively, Railroad Earth wields an impressive arsenal of sounds, with each player bringing a variety of instruments and tones to the collective. The unique howl of an edgy rock-inflected violin, a fat-toned acoustic guitar with sounds bordering on a classic Gibson motif, wild fanning mandolin chording that has an almost piano-like attack, rolling or clawing banjo and dobro, and a slamming rhythm section driven by precise, rock-hard drumming and an aggressively, pumping upright bass. All of this delivered with surprisingly unique vocals, powerful harmonies and world-class songwriting.

To be more precise, Railroad Earth features songwriter/singer, Todd Sheaffer (Lead vocals, acoustic guitars), Tim Carbone (Violin, electric guitar, vocals), John Skehan (Mandolin, vocals), Andy Goessling (Acoustic guitars, banjo, dobro, mandolin, flute, pennywhistle, saxophones and vocals), Carey Harmon (Drums, hand percussion, vocals) and newcomer Andrew Altman (Upright bass), formerly of the Southeast band, The Codetalkers .

Railroad Earth’s unique sound is one that may be hard to categorize, but is also damn hard to shake! Each live performance is like a journey into the beating heart of American life, its heartaches and its triumphs. A true musical celebration, this is one tour that is not to be missed.
