MMJ's Carl Broemel Shares Video Performances of Three Solo Songs

Leading up to the release of his solo album All Birds Say, which is out next week on August 31st (ATO Records), My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel has been steadily revealing performances of some of the tracks off the record.   You may have seen Broemel do a rendition of “Questions” over at MOG, creating an epic solo version of the track that builds to a thrillingly noisy climax.  He also played the earnest and whimsical “Enough,” which recently debuted at My Old Kentucky Blog. Lastly, his version of “Carried Away,” a contemplative and heartfelt ballad that My Morning Jacket recently performed, premiered at JamBase.  Please feel free to post and share all three videos!

As evident by these three clips, Broemel is a sophisticated songwriter  and an elegantly effortless performer.  He has the lyrical perspective of an individual who truly reflects and learns from his life’s experiences.  However, Broemel favors a Zen-like approach, keeping his philosophical musings from getting anywhere near being preachy.  Needless to say, MMJ fans who know him solely from the fiery riffs and guitar solos he performs with the band are going to see a whole other side of him.

Click HERE for photos of Carl, an mp3 off the album (which you are also welcome to post/share), and more info on him.

My Morning Jacket to Perform 5 Shows @ NYC's Terminal 5!

Eleven years into their career, Louisville’s My Morning Jacket have released five highly acclaimed, classic albums, the live concert album and DVD Okonokos,  and have been revered for their legendary live performances.  With such an expansive catalogue, it’s been impossible in recent years for the band to perform every last MMJ favorite for one venue… that is, until this October.  In an unprecedented move, New York City’s Terminal 5 will be presenting a historic five night run of shows where the band will perform one of their albums in its entirety on each night.

The stint will kick off on Monday, October 18th with a performance of the Jacket’s debut, 1999’s The Tennessee Fire, and will be followed chronologically by their other four full-lengths, ending with 2008’s Evil Urges on Saturday the 23rd.  After the given album is performed each night, the audience will be treated to a mix of favorites from the band’s catalog as well.  The series of shows are sure to put a magnifying glass over the chameleonic band’s history, highlighting their remarkable tendency to perpetually evolve.

All of the dates will individually go on sale June 18th but for fans who want the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of experiencing all five nights, there will be a special pre-sale.  Five-show ticket packages will go on sale June 14th.  As with their current upcoming headlining tour dates in August, the band will be donating $1 from each ticket to a local charity.  Please see below for more info on each charity and to purchase tickets, head over to www.terminal5nyc.com.

Jake Shimabukuro to Perform with Bette Midler for Queen of England

Jake Shimabukuro, ukulele virtuoso from Hawaii, will perform his arrangement of the Beatles’ tune “In My Life” with Bette Midler for The Royal Variety Performance 2009 in Blackpool, England.

The Performance is presented annually in aid of the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (the EABF), whose patron is Her Majesty The Queen.  Acts lined up to appear include: Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg, Canadian singer and Grammy Award winner Michael Buble, teen superstar Miley Cyrus, and many more.

Midler, a multi-award winning performer also from Hawaii, has followed her fellow islander’s career and loves Jake’s arrangement of “In My Life,” a Beatles cover that appeared on Jake’s 2008 release, My Life.

“I was shocked to hear that Bette Midler knew my music.  I’ve been a huge fan of hers for many years,” said Jake.  “She’s like a queen of entertainment.  And to be performing with her for the Queen of England… it’s a bit too much for me.  I’m just so honored.”

The performance will be Jake’s first time to England and second time to Europe after touring earlier this year in Stockholm, Sweden, Pori, Finland, Nice & Paris, France, and San Sebastian, Spain.

Blackpool’s legendary Opera House is the largest theatre in the UK outside of London with a seating capacity of 3000.  The star-studded spectacle will take place on Monday, December 7 and be screened on ITV1, in the UK, later that month.  It will be produced by ITV Studios, the makers of the 2007 Royal Variety Performance, which attracted an impressive 9 million viewers.

The money raised from this event will help to maintain Brinsworth House in Twickenham, Middlesex – the entertainers’ retirement and nursing home which is run by the EABF.

Umphrey's McGee to Perform in Portland

photos by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

Umphrey's McGee released Jimmy Stewart 2007 this past June.  This digital-only release features the band's best improvisations of the past year.  Jimmy Stewart 2007 is a limited edition release, first available at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and thereafter available digitally through UMLive.net and iTunes.  Plus, the UM download will offer up a companion podcast with an additional 70 minutes of material that did not make the Jimmy Stewart 2007 album.

Jimmy Stewart 2007 is an ambitious effort to compile a year's worth of the band's inspired improvisations into two seamless 70-minute "mixtapes."  At over 100 shows a year, Umphrey's McGee delves into these spontaneous compositions, engaging their fans as they feed off each other's energy.  A Zappa-inspired language of body gestures and hand-signals allow the band to break structure while creating an entirely new arrangement.  As Umphrey's McGee continues to evolve, each live performance showcases the band's "Jimmy Stewart" approach to structured improvisation.

Also, Umphrey's McGee released a digital-only live series titled CompendiUM.  Available through iTunes and UMLive.net, CompendiUM offers live recordings of the band's favorite ten shows of 2007.  Included in the series are the band's Boulder, Colorado show from March 6th, their Portland, Oregon show on June 7th, and the Chicago show from December 30th, among others.

In the ever-changing music industry, Umphrey's McGee has proven adaptive and inventive both in music and in business.  Through grassroots promotions, an intensive touring schedule, open taping policies and music sharing among fans, Umphrey's McGee provides a new approach to media, entertainment, and music distribution.  Tape trading in the jam-band scene was one of the earliest examples of free music distribution and Umphrey's has harnessed the internet's momentum to spread their music far and wide.  With an extensive variety of downloadable formats, UMlive.net offers more music than any other indie label with download stores, and Umphrey's McGee basically gives away the equivalent of 40,000 CDs each month through their podcast program.  The band has also been releasing soundboard recordings at the end of each night's concert for immediate sale since 2001 and typically sells anywhere from 120 to 180 CD-Rs per night.  Their unique approach to online and digital distribution, paired with word of mouth buzz, has helped Umphrey's McGee sell out shows nationwide while keeping their fans their top priority.

DiFranco wears many hats including singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer.  Her empowering spirit is evident through her songs that tackle barbed political and sexual issues with uncommon insight and compassion.  Ani's new studio album, Red Letter Year, celebrates existence, profess love and condemn religious fundamentalism with an infectious sense of glee.  It's one of Ani's most joyous records to date.  Red Letter Year takes more advantage of this freedom than ever before.  Conceived, sculpted and refined over the course of two years - a lifetime compared to a typical Ani recording session - the album is an impeccably crafted, multi-layered sonic achievement

Ani DiFranco's feeling good, and she's in a giving mood - Red Letter Year isn't just a party, it's a music lover's gift.
