GARAGE A TROIS Announce New Album & Tour

On April 12, Garage A Trois will release Always Be Happy, But Stay Evil via Royal Potato Family. Aptly described by photographer John Margaretten as "a transformative, punkalectic, pornographic seizure of sight and sound," the modern day post rock/freak jazz supergroup will support the album with west and east coast tour dates in April and May. Garage A Trois, a force greater than the sum of its colossal parts, is comprised of Seattle-based saxophonics master Skerik, Brooklyn sound-sculptor/keysman Marco Benevento, Texas-born punk rock vibraphone hero Mike Dillon and New Orleans funky drummer/beat scientist Stanton Moore.

Always Be Happy, But Stay Evil follows Garage A Trois' 2009 release, Power Patriot (the band’s debut with Benevento replacing original member Charlie Hunter). In the words of Stanton Moore, "the band set out to capture the highly flammable, rock-driven, avant pop album we all knew we were capable of making." Recorded at Studio In The Country in Bogalusa, LA (where masterpieces by The Neville Brothers, Stevie Wonder and The Wild Magnolias have been cut) with revered engineer/producer Randall Dunn (Cave Singers, Black Mountain, Sun City Girls), Always Be Happy, But Stay Evil is indeed the finest representation yet of the band's sinewy, fourth-dimensional, polychromatic songwriting. It's sure to fuel the fire for a growing legion of fans amassing around the most dangerous instrumental band on the scene today.

Brian Wright's House On Fire - Out TODAY

Sugar Hill Records is proud to continue its legacy of incredible songwriters with the release of Brian Wright’s House on Fire – out today. While this is the first label release from the Waco, TX native, he has built a firm base of fans within and beyond the music industry with two previous releases and tireless touring in the US and Europe. Unlike previous releases, which were both recorded in the studio with a band, House on Fire approaches the recording process in a much more relaxed and reflective manner, with Wright playing every instrument himself and handpicking his prolifically written songs into a mindful, well-curated collection.

And make no mistake, this album truly is about the songs. Gems like “Mean ol’ Wind” and “Live Again” convey the tenderness of the soul which very few songwriters can capture.  “Striking Matches” and “The Good Dr.” bring the driving sound of a cross-country bound train, bound for heartache or redemption. “Maria Sugarcane” paints with a Southern Gothic brush that would make Flannery O’Connor proud.

“When people ask what I sound like, I usually say I’m somewhere between Woody Guthrie and Velvet Underground,” says Wright. “This album finally allowed me to make the music the exact way it was in my head.”

After spending his early twenties on the Austin/Waco/Dallas bar circuit, playing everything from punk to covers, Wright flipped a coin to decide his future home, either New York City or Los Angeles.  Going West won the day.  Today, when not touring, he resides in Los Angeles where he is a fixture in the LA music scene.  For the last six years he has been the front man and lyricist for his band Brian Wright and the Waco Tragedies, a band that has gathered a devoted audience across the country.

Spring into Sound at Kimock's NYC Residency

Fresh off a sold-out run in California, Steve Kimock kicks off his NYC residency at Sullivan Hall this Wednesday, March 23rd. The weekly Wednesday performance runs through April 6th and features an array of special guest performers such as New Orleans legend Henry Butler, Marco Benevento, Adam Deitch, John Molo, Pete Sears, John Morgan Kimock, with other special and surprise guests. Regarded as a true "musician's musician," Kimock has been coined, "an unknown legend" in a recent CNN piece, and a master of his craft, it's no wonder that Jerry Garcia dubbed him one of his favorite unknown guitar players.

Kimock has gone out of his way to maintain an authentic relationship with his instrument and his sound. Many focus on music specifically, not dealing with sound as the main component. For Kimock, the sound is the reason that he plays and the music is the vessel. With excitingly stunning guitar explorations coupled with melodic mastery and remarkable improvisation, Kimock's distinctive ability to elevate sonically, creates indescribable moments of transcendence for his loyal audiences.

Blending genres from rock, jazz, blues, to middle-eastern and almost everything in between, Kimock has played with some "main" bands over the years, most notably Zero, KVHW, the Other Ones, and was part of the legendary Phil & Friends lineup in '99, a few incarnations of The Steve Kimock Band and most recently the electronica outfit PRAANG. With his keen ability to step onto any stage at any time, and constantly raise the bar with all sorts of bands through a wide-range of genres, Kimock's guitar playing is the stuff of legends.

The Sullivan Hall residency will kick off promptly at 9 PM for three consecutive Wednesday night performances beginning on March 23rd and will run through April 6th -- and in typical Kimock fashion, each night will have its own flavor, sure to bring some unexpected surprises.

Tickets $20 and available at www.kimock.com and http://www.sullivanhallnyc.com.

CHRISTY & EMILY: TALK NORMAL

For Christy & Emily, these songs are a preview of their newer sound with bass (Pete Kerlin) and drums (Kristin Mueller). Later in the spring of 2011, Christy & Emily will be heading to the Faust Studio in southern Germany to record a new full-length album with this quartet. They are happy with the way the band allows them to expand sonically. The extra track on the digital download card is a song by Oakley Hall, called “Endtime Evangelist,” off of their first self-titled album on Bulb (four years before they signed to Merge). This song has been strong on Emily's mind for half a decade, only coming out as a cover that the duo has been performing live in the last year.
Talk Normal's "Hurricane" is a soaring narrative piece. Lead by drummer Andrya Ambro's melodic lead vocal and buffeted by guitarist Sarah Register's harmonies, "Hurricane" is a sing-a-long story told with humility, grace & pleasing cacophony. Conceptual references range from U.S. Girls to Meredith Monk to Tears For Fears to The Velvet Underground – yet the sound is all their own, with an ebbing structure that carries the imagination through a manic ocean of soundscapes, wildly complex and still simple enough to be howled at the moon.

Track List:
Side A
Christy & Emily - “Bells”
Side B
Talk Normal - “Hurricane”
*Digital download cards will include an extra Christy & Emily track, “Endtime Evangelist”
Christy & Emily is:
Emily Manzo - electric piano

Peter Kerlin - bass
Kristin Mueller - drums

Ex-Kumbia Kingz / All Starz Frontmen, Ricky Rick & DJ Kane Form New Group 'LA FORMULA'

Grammy award winning artists Ricky Rick & DJ Kane, formerly members of The Kumbia Kingz and Kumbia All Starz, have united their artistic talents to form a new and much needed Kumbia Fusion group called ‘La Formula’. This dynamic duo is currently in the midst of producing and recording their debut alum also called ‘La Formula’ and which is being released on indie label, The Art Of Sound Group. The first single released off their debut album is “Contigo Me Voy”, a danceable fun track with ballad like lyrics, which was released on 1/1/11. The song is destined to become a sensational hit as its popularity with DJ’s across the country is rapidly rising causing its fast climb on radio charts and digital sales worldwide including, Asia, a usually uncharted territory. The song, written and Produced by Grammy & ASCAP Award winning production team Robert “Bobbo” Gomez III & Emilio “YEYO” Cancio-Bello, blends upbeat Kumbia beats with influences of pop, hip hop and dancehall style raggae. The video for the single was recently shot in Las Vegas, Nevada by Director Zues Ali who also directed the famous Lil Wayne Mini Movie. The video illustrates a warm tropical feel of summer, dancing and all around good time, which is in tune with the danceable rhythms set to the love story based lyrics.

This newly formed team are the creative minds behind hits like “Mami”, “Rica y Apretadita”, Por ti baby”, “Shhhhh”, “No tengo dinero” and many other international hits and came together after the recent rupture of the Kumbia All Starz (formerly known as Kumbia Kingz). It is said that necessity is the mother of invention and in the eyes of these talented artists and their innovative producers it was necessary to bring back the genre with new faces, new beats and a whole re-invention to electrify their public. When asked why they chose the name ‘La Formula’ as the name of their new band, they responded “Because putting us together was like a secret formula for great music and a new twist on the Kumbia-Pop genre”. Most recently the group was selected to perform at the prestigious SXSW Festival at the Barbella Patio Stage on Saturday, March 19th and will be performing at the Latin Billboard Conference. Together, they have sold over 20 million copies and have toured through the US, Central and South America as well as performed in major events including Premios Lo Nuestro, Latin Billboards and many more.

Art Of Sound is an indie music bi-lingual label based in Miami and headed by Grammy nominated and ASCAP award winning producer and writer, Emilio “Yeyo” Cancio-Bello. Art of Sound is based on the concept that music is the universal force that bounds cultures together and that language and geography is never a boundary for creativity.

Dawn Of The Gecko Release Debut EP, "Raised In The Gecko"

Phil Jourdan of the musical duo Dawn Of the Gecko announced today that their debut album “Raised in the Gecko,” has been released and is currently available for purchase on iTunes and other online retailers. The five track EP features a delightful assortment of cabaret-electronic rock songs mixed with comical lyrics and beats that don’t disappoint.

Describing their genre, Jourdan said, “If it’s melodramatic, campy and upbeat, you’re halfway there. If you incorporate a look of theatrical nonsense into the music and you tell a story, you’re even closer. But I’d say the main thing is to be faithful to the spirit of cabaret, with its grotesqueness and its creepy vibe.” Jourdan, along with partner Sam Folkes, is creating music that serves the dual purpose of both sounding great and making you laugh.

Their second EP, “Gecko! Echo! Echo!” is already in the process of being completed, and is expected to be released in late March, 2011. Dawn Of The Gecko currently performs in local bars, but have their sights set on other venues as well.

The pair met in 2010 through a friend, to whom they have since dedicated a song (“Jim’s Girl”), and discovered they both liked to make music. Their friendship was solidified when they became roommates after Folkes decided to move to Leamington. Though they didn’t know it at the time, a musical match made in heaven was about to be born.

Though both were musicians prior to meeting, neither had the passion that they now both have with Dawn Of The Gecko. Jourdan commented, “I’ve been playing guitar and bass since high school, though I never took it very seriously and prefer to sing when possible. We both like to geek around with sounds, though Sam’s been at it far longer than I have. I used to play little one-man comedy gigs — then I stopped for several years. It was only after meeting Sam that I decided to play live again. We play a gig weekly here in Leamington Spa, where we also live.”

Folkes studied Music Composition and Technology at the University of Hertfordshire and has had a lifelong interest in music. He began playing the piano at age fifteen as a result of being such a huge fan of Boogie-Woogie.

While the pair came up with the band’s name in five minutes by randomly choosing words, selecting their sound took a bit longer. “Initially, we simply wanted to make funny cabaret songs, but given Sam’s love for electronic music and my interest in heavy rock, we quickly expanded the sound and different things until we were happy with the “Gecko sound”. That “Gecko sound” consists of Jourdan on guitar, bass, and singing vocals, with Folkes on piano and doing the programming and mixing.

Coming up with the concept of doing Cabaret-electronica music was a somewhat natural evolution of things that the Dawn of the Gecko band members had been doing on their own. “We were mostly interested in doing stupid pantomime-style stuff when we started out. The comedy bit seemed obvious — we both like not to take our music too seriously. The electronica influences (as well as the occasional industrial influences) came later, when we tried to make the songs sound more original, more relevant to our interests. Not all of our songs are meant to be hilarious, but they’re all pretty stupid lyrically, and they incorporate silly little melodies.

“Raised In The Gecko” can be purchased here.
