Rose Hill Drive Hosts CD Release Party at the Fox Theater

When I walked into the Fox Theatre last Tuesday night through the crowd of longhaired, indignant teenagers, would-be revolutionaries and otherwise strongly opinionated young people, the building fairly stank of angst and attitude.  The cause: Rose Hill Drive was celebrating the release of their second studio album, "Moon is the New Earth," and it attracted the usual gang of Alice In Chains,

In 2006, Conscious Alliance distributed approximately 1,000 holiday turkey boxes to people in need in South Dakota and Montana.

Conscious Alliance's Youth Against Hunger project (YAH) offers exciting alternative service-learning experiences for college students during their fall/spring breaks.  YAH synthesizes service learning by combining education and hands-on service.  The inaugural YAH trip took place October 21-26, 2007, with students from Warren Wilson College (Asheville, NC) participating.  YAH students learned about hunger related issues, as well as Lakota culture, by providing compassionate cross-cultural community service on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.  While on the reservation, students lodged with community leaders Floyd and Natalie Hand, as they sorted and distributed food to community members in need, aided with home repairs for Lakota families, participated in educational sessions with Lakota elders, and communicated with Pine Ridge college students and peers about current cultural, social, economic, and environmental issues.  Conscious Alliance's YAH provides students with the knowledge and support they need to return to their respective communities and, using the skills they have acquired, create positive change in their local communities.  The next YAH trip will take place in spring 2008.  For more information on Conscious Alliance and YAH, and upcoming service learning opportunities, please visit http://www.consciousalliance.org/projects.yah.htm.

Since 1998, the free, outdoor "911 Power to the Peaceful Festival" has been a fun, educational, hip and diverse annual experience. The first event was held in a neighborhood park and drew 6,000 people. In recent years, it has grown to draw over 60,000 people to the spacious Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park. Past artists and speakers have included The String Cheese Incident, John Butler Trio, KRS-One, Digital Underground, Woody Harrelson, Angela Davis, Dennis Kucinich, Ram Das, Blackalicious, Alice Walker, Talib Kweli, The Coup, Saul Williams, Keller Williams, Lyrics Born and many others.

In a year that is shaping up to be his most active year yet in support of the peace movement, Michael Franti visited and performed for injured soldiers at Washington's Walter Reed Army Medical Center this past April, before participating in a fundraiser for Iraq Veterans Against the War. In May 2007, Franti performed an extremely rare San Quentin Prison concert, extolling the virtues of peace in a performance before some 2,000 inmates.

The award winning filmmaker Franti - who is responsible for I Know I'm Not Alone, the heralded 2005 documentary about the Iraq War, and the subsequent 2006 Anti- debut Yell Fire!, which was inspired by his travels to the war-torn area - has been praised for his commitments to peace, tolerance and co-existence from journalists and formal and informal leaders throughout the globe.

Franti and Spearhead will celebrate the success of their breakthrough 2006 Anti- debut Yell Fire! by releasing a live, digital-only version of the acclaimed disc this October. In advance of its extensive U.S. autumn tour, the group is currently at work with producer Matt Wallace (The Replacements, Faith No More, John Hiatt) on its next album, due via Anti- in 2008.

Fur Peace Ranch Hosts Multi-Faceted Performer David Gans for Intimate Instructional Sessions

David Gans- for the Grateful Web

Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch will host multi-faceted performer, guitarist, and songwriter David Gans Friday, September 28 through Monday, October 1 for a series of intimate instructional sessions on electric and acoustic guitar looping techniques.

"I got the loop device as a way of enriching my solo performances," Gans explains. "I wanted to be able to record the chord changes of the song so I could play a guitar solo over top. But once I had that thing on the floor in front of me, I began to explore the creative possibilities. Now I'm able to improvise multi-layered musical structures onstage - and some of them become compositions after I get them into the studio for editing and analysis."

This first-hand workshop provides instruction in the use of a loop device as both an accompaniment for singer-songwriters and for the creation of multi-layered improvisations. Participating students need to bring a guitar that plugs in (acoustic or electric), and a Boss RC-20XL or RC-2 Loop Station.

For his live performances, Gans equips himself only with his sturdy baritone, a guitar and a pedal-controlled looping setup, the sum of which sounds anything but unaccompanied. Aside from these "solo" performances, Gans has performed with such legendary artists as Phil Lesh, Railroad Earth, Donna the Buffalo, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The String Cheese Incident, moe. and dozens of others. He has also written songs with a host of others, including Jim Page, Lorin Rowan, and Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter.

Conceived in 1989 by Jorma & Vanessa Kaukonen, The Fur Peace Ranch is nestled in the rolling foothills of southeast Ohio.  Over time it has evolved into an idyllic landscape of neatly arrayed cabins, workshop space, library, store, dining hall, plus a theater that hosts concerts performed by world-class musicians.

Conscious Alliance is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization committed to the redistribution of much needed food to the impoverished communities of the United States.  They operate an ongoing, national grassroots food collection and hunger awareness program. In short – they organize food drives at concerts and sporting events to collect food donations to benefit local food pantries and impoverished Indian reservations throughout the U.S.

Since their first event in 2002, Conscious Alliance has hosted hundreds of food drives at many events, including such music festivals as Bonnaroo, Power to the Peaceful, and the Langerado Music Festival, and for such artists as Jack Johnson, Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Franti & Spearhead, The Dead, The String Cheese Incident, and many, many others. The net result: the redistribution of over 300 tons of food – and counting!

During a Hurricane Katrina benefit concert in 2005, The Conscious Alliance teamed up with the Dave Matthews Band, resulting in the collection of over 30,000 lbs. of food and over $70,000 in donation money that supported the disaster relief efforts.

Also in the fall of 2005, Conscious Alliance completed the first phase of Project Restoration, a project that created a brand new food storage and distribution facility on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, in South Dakota.  The facility provides emergency food relief to hundreds of families each month, and phase two of the project is currently in progress.
