Method of Defiance Play Rare NYC Show

The all-star crew that makes up Method of Defiance are some of the busiest and most accomplished musicians working today, but six of the seven group members have managed to join forces for a rare live performance on November 6th at Santos Party House.  Filling in for drummer Guy Licata is Hideo Yamaki, a living legend in the drumming world, also the most sought after drummer in Japan. Yamaki has played with countless Japanese musicians from j-pop sensations to traditional / classical artist, as well as western musicians like Cream’s Ginger Baker and avant-garde legend John Zorn.

Method of Defiance was formed by Grammy-winning electric bassist, producer, and re-mixer Bill Laswell.  Laswell has worked with many of music’s biggest names on the planet, including Herbie Hancock, Laurie Anderson,  George ClintonBrian EnoTony Williams, Mick Jagger, Williams Burroughs, Afrika Bambaataa, Motörhead, John Lydon, Bootsy Collins, Carlos Santana, Matisyahu, Anthony Braxton, Sting, Zakir Hussein, John Zorn, Sonny Sharrock and hundreds more from the Americas, Africa The Caribbean, Europe, The Middle East, China, and Japan.  Laswell has built a reputation on consistently working with a diverse array of artists, and rejecting the restrictions of genre, tradition, and commerce in favor or taking risks and uniting seemingly disparate voices.

Method of Defiance has released the first of their three albums scheduled on M.O.D. TechnologiesJahbulon features vocalists Dr. Israel and Hawk, keyboardist / Funkadelic icon Bernie Worrell, legendary bassist/producer Bill Laswell, and post modern/futurist drummer, Guy Licata.  It’s a song driven release built on the foundations of reggae, hip hop, dancehall, dub, electronica, rock, roots reggae, drum & bass and the future.

The second album Incunabula (out November 6th), is a spontaneous improvisation of musical interaction. The album’s lineup includes Bill Laswell on bass and dub efx, Bernie Worrell on keyboards, turntable master DJ Krush and on electric trumpet Japan’s own, sound and fury - Toshinori Kondo, Guy Licata ondrums, Dr. Israel on dub efx,  with a special appearance by keyboard legend Herbie Hancock.

In April 2011, the guys will put out the remix project Dub Arcanum Arcandrum, a mix of both Jahbulon (the voice) and Incunabula (the music) re-imagined  by Bill Laswell, Lee "Scratch" Perry, The Scientist, Mad Professor, Dr. Israel, DJ Krush, and others.

Method Of Defiance | Jahbulon | Streets 10/19/10

M.O.D. TECHNOLOGIES created by the principle members of Method Of Defiance. This label is a modern evolution of the original AXIOM label - for the purpose of destroying, discerning musical genres, trends, approved or unapproved formats, false ideas and other unnecessary borders. All releases are the direct manifestations of Bill Laswell and other key members of the collective. The label is formed for the advancement of art and communication, in all forms of the creative process.

Grammy-winning electric bassist, producer, and re-mixer Bill Laswell has worked with many of music’s biggest names on the planet, including Herbie Hancock, Laurie Anderson, George Clinton, Brian Eno, Tony Williams, Mick Jagger, Williams Burroughs, Afrika Bambaataa, Motorhead, John Lydon, Bootsy Collins, Carlos Santana, Matisyahu, Anthony Braxton, Sting, Zakir Hussein, John Zorn, and hundreds more from the Americas, Africa The Caribbean, Europe, The Middle East, China, and Japan. Laswell has built a reputation on consistently working with a diverse array of artists, and rejecting the restrictions of genre, tradition, and commerce in favor or taking risks and uniting seemingly disparate voices. It is with this ethos that he has formed the record label M.O.D. Technologies, which is set to release albums this October by the group Method of Defiance and one of Ethiopia’s most famous contemporary vocalists, Gigi. In addition, the label is planning releases from Dr. Israel, Gnawa Fusion, Afa Negus, and DJ Krush in the near future.

Method of Defiance is an all-star cast that consists of the following members:

BILL LASWELL (see collaborations above)
BERNIE WORRELL (Parliament Funkadelic, Talking Heads, Keith Richards)
DR. ISRAEL (Sublime, The Mad Professor, Killah Priest)
HAWK (Tricky, Tool, The Roots’ Black Thought)
DJ KRUSH (Ronny Jordan, Luna Sea & Ryuichi Sakamoto)
TOSHINORI KONDO (Herbie Hancock, Derek Bailey, Henry Kaiser, Peter Brotzmann)
GUY LICATA (Santigold, Massive Attack, Hercules & Love Affair)

Method of Defiance will release three albums, first the immediately accessible Jahbulon (October 5th): Ten songs featuring vocalists Dr. Israel and Hawk, keyboardist / Funkadelic icon Bernie Worrell, legendary bassist/producer Bill Laswell, and post modern/futurist drummer, Guy Licata. A cross-generational affair that incorporates elements of reggae, hip hop, dancehall, dub, electronica, rock, roots music and more. The beauty lies within its ability to touch on multiple overlapping cultural reference points.

This will be followed (October 19th) by Incunabula a spontaneous improvisation of musical interaction. The album’s lineup includes Bill Laswell on bass and dub efx, Bernie Worrell on keyboards, Guy Licata on drums, Dr. Israel on dub efx, turntable master DJ Krush and on electric trumpet Japan’s own, sound and fury - Toshinori Kondo with a special appearance by keyboard legend Herbie Hancock.

Ending the trilogy in Jan 2011 with the remix project Dub Arcanum Arcandrum a mix of both Jahbulon (the vocal) and Incunabula (the instrumental) by Bill Laswell, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Mad Professor, Dr. Israel, DJ Krush, and others.

BILL EVANS TRIBUTE Tonight At Cornelia Street Café

We open our 2010/11 Serial Underground season with a unique evening to celebrate the great composer/pianist/jazz icon Bill Evans on the thirtieth anniversary of his death on September 15, 1980. Bill was an early mentor of mine. Although it took me a long to appreciate his influential lyrical side, the hard-swinging extroversion that characterized how he played in his last years grabbed me. I suspect our casual friendship arose from common musical interests; for instance, our mutual appreciation of great classical pianists. Bill set me up with a job fixing up and editing his transcribed solos for a book. and we painstakingly cross-checked details over the phone (this was before fax machines and computers, remember). I'd plunk out a chord on my piano, and he'd say yes or no or change this or keep that, and so forth.

Tonight's guest writers certainly bring us closer to the man behind the music. Bill Zavatsky's poems stay with you long after you read or hear them. Laurie Verchomin's upcoming memoir about her life with Bill Evans in the last year and a half of his life runs the full emotional gamut. Once I started reading it, I couldn't stop. Laurie and I decided to frame her words with piano music, and although I'm using Bill¹s compositions or, in some cases, songs associated with him, strangely enough, I'm not playing like him. Maybe a chord or two, or a favorite lick, but I just can't do my once letter-perfect Bill Evans imitation anymore. Perhaps that's a good thing. When I told Bill how much I had stolen from him, he said "Go right ahead. That's what I did when I was young. It only took me forty years to evolve my own style!"

Kinky Friedman's First West Coast Your in Two Decades

Former Texas gubernatorial candidate, political commentator and self-proclaimed “author, columnist, musician and beautician” Kinky Friedman will perform on the West Coast this summer for the first time in nearly 20 years. Dates for the “Go West Young Kinky Tour of 2010” start on July 26th in Vancouver and continue into August (a full list of venues follows). Two members of Kinky's seminal band the Texas Jewboys, Little Jewford and Washington Ratso, will join him on the tour.  No prisoners will be taken. Only the strong shall survive.

The Kinkster, often referred to as the “Mark Twain of Texas,” will also be hawking his wares, in this case his most recent (limited edition) books, Heroes of a Texas Childhood and What Would Kinky Do?, both of which will be available for purchase and signing at the shows. As Kinky has often said, he’ll “sign anything but bad legislation.” This includes any of his dozens of top-selling books or columns, or even his Kinky Friedman Cigars, which, rumor has it, will also be available at the venues. Bring it, and he will sign it.

Kinky Friedman rose to stardom in the ’70s, with the aforementioned Texas Jewboys as his sick and twisted sidekicks. An equal opportunity offender, Kinky, with his outrageous lyrics and crazed stage persona, may have offended some, but drew people like Don Imus, Robin Williams, Bob Dylan and John Belushi into his spiritual fan club. He toured with Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue and appeared on the inaugural season of Saturday Night Live. His infamous appearance on Austin City Limits, the only performance ever filmed by ACL and never broadcast because of content, has finally been released on DVD, to the delight of fans everywhere.

In the mid ’80s, Kinky rescued a woman being robbed at a midtown Manhattan ATM, and, based on this experience, created the character Kinky Friedman the Detective, who solved murders in what would become a series of wildly popular mystery novels. In the years since, the real Kinky has branched out into children’s books, memoirs, historical reflections and editorials, all to great success, and all powered by his razor sharp wit.

Kinky’s commentaries have appeared in such diverse media as The New York Times, Texas Monthly and Playboy, and since adding politics to his résumé, he has been a regular on cable networks, even stopping by occasionally to spar with Bill O'Reilly.

His books are now read the world over, and his tour schedule reflects this. From Bill Clinton to Billy Bob Thornton to Nelson Mandela, everybody loves a Kinky Friedman mystery. As the ever-humble author likes to say, “I write novels for Americans to read on their aircraft.” Billy Bob is currently working with him on a new book, as is Willie Nelson.

And now, for the first time in almost a generation, folks on the West Coast will get to hear Kinky perform (live!) tunes like “Ride ’Em Jewboy,” “Sold American” and “They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anymore.”  And many friends will be there too: Mojo Nixon will join Kinky in San Diego, and Van Dyke Parks has already signed up for L.A.  There’s no telling who else will pop in.  Will there be a Wavy Gravy sighting in San Francisco?

7 Walkers, featuring Bill Kreutzmann and Papa Mali, Announce Dates

Legendary drummer and co-founder of the Grateful Dead, Bill Kreutzmann, together with funky bluesman and voodoo electronic pioneer Papa Mali, officially unveil 7 Walkers’ spring plans. 7 Walkers, which also features bass virtuoso Reed Mathis (Tea Leaf Green, JFJO) and multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson and Friends), will stop at select markets and festivals through out the country, all in anticipation of a new album release. The complete list of currently confirmed tour dates is included below.

7 Walkers recently spent time at an Austin, Texas studio, recording an album to be released later this year. In addition to a brand-new batch of Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan lyricist) originals that were co-written with the band, the new album offers up favorites from the Grateful Dead repertoire, Papa Mali originals, and some New Orleans and Southern songbook interpretations. Overall, the result is a fiery and funky collection of tunes that quite brilliantly capture the unique collaboration between these two very different musical shamans.

Bill Kreutzmann (who played every show in the Grateful Dead’s illustrious 30 year career as well as The Dead incarnations since) first met funky Papa Mali at a festival in 2008. Bill recalls in a recent interview, “We first met at the Oregon Country Fair last year. He was the headliner on the main stage, and I sat there and watched him and went, ‘This guy's for real man, I like this guy.' Then we met, after that he came over to my trailer that I was staying in and you couldn't separate us, we talked for hours. It was just one of those natural things, you know? You can't plan it; You can't make it happen. And then we started playing together.”

Live audio recordings of the 7 Walkers can be heard at the newly re-launched www.billkreutzmann.com.

Meanwhile, at nugs.net, fans can now download live BK3 recordings from their 2009 Colorado shows. Another potent Kreutzmann musical project, BK3 first toured in 2008 and featured a rotating lineup including such players as guitarist Scott Murawski (Max Creek) and bassists James "Hutch" Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt), Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers), and Mike Gordon (Phish).

Bill Kreutzmann is also working to support the efforts of University of California at Santa Cruz, who has committed to helping to archive all things Grateful Dead. As Kreutzmann explains, “I am incredibly happy that the kind archivists at UC Santa Cruz understand the social value of [the Grateful Dead’s] priceless archive, and its hallowed meaning to our most beloved ‘Dead Heads.’ Without the care it is now going to receive, these treasures would be lost.”
