Jake Shimabukuro & His Ukulele Top Billboard This Week

Jake Shimabukuro has conquered the Billboard music charts this week with his instrument re-defining new album, Peace Love Ukulele. The album debuted at #1 on the "World Albums" chart (the ukulele virtuoso's best showing to date), blazed the "Heatseekers" chart with a Hot Shot debut in the 4th position, and also made it onto the “Independent Albums” chart at #31. Peace Love Ukulele, out on Hitchhike Records, has shattered the first week sales records of all previous Shimabukuro releases.

The Honolulu native and his stalwart ukulele skills were recently featured on NPR'S “Weekend Edition,” where he voiced his conviction that "if everyone played the ukulele, the world would be a better place.”’

Fleck, Harrison, Wooten Adore Jake Shimabukuro

Critics have raved about the artistry Jake Shimabukuro displays on 'Peace Love Ukulele' (out January 4th from Hitchhike Records). The New Yorker said that "in his hands... the ukulele becomes a source of beauty, power, and inspiration."

Jake's fellow musicians agree. Here's what some of them had to say:

"The way Jake plays the 'ukulele is amazing and beautiful... he's a special musician." - Bela Fleck

"To say that Jake is incredible is not enough. He is much more than that. His music takes you on a journey. He plays with so much expression, feeling, and soul; it's like he's an old man in a young man's body. It only takes one listen to understand exactly what I'm saying." - Victor Wooten

"George felt liberated playing the uke and loved it because it made everyone smile. I especially love Jake's versions of George's songs." - Olivia Harrison

"It gives me a great deal of satisfaction to know that I was able to contribute in some way to the rest of the world hearing Jake play. From the moment I first heard his amazing style and watched the audience reaction in a club on the waterfront in Honolulu, I knew he was a unique and universal talent. We all at Mailboat Records are proud and excited to be distributing his latest release, and it gives me another good excuse to get back to Hawaii for 'business' - work, work, work..." - Jimmy Buffett

“Instrumentalists with a truly unique voice on their instrument come around very rarely. It was such a welcome gift to the world when Jake came on the scene... someone whose mastery of the ukulele is eclipsed only by the sheer joy he spreads in playing it. Jake Shimabukuro is without a doubt, one of a kind!” - Dave Koz

Rex Foundation Announces Ralph Gleason Award to Jorma Kaukonen

We certainly set out running and we took our time! Once the board determined who was to receive it, consensus was unanimous.

The Rex Foundation is pleased to award Jorma Kaukonen the 2009 Ralph J. Gleason Award for a scholarship program at Fur Peace Ranch to serve Appalachian youth. The $10,000 award is in memory of music journalist Ralph J. Gleason, a major figure in the advancement of music in America in the 1960s, whose openness to new music and ideas transcended differences between generations and styles.

Founding Rex board member, Jerry Garcia, and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen were peers in the Haight Ashbury days of 1960s San Francisco. Their respective bands, Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, exemplified the San Francisco Sound. Both musicians were pickers, that is they loved to play. Jerry and Jorma both taught guitar. Jerry gave lessons at Dana Morgan's Music Store in Menlo Park near Palo Alto south of San Francisco. Jorma continues to teach at the 116 acre Fur Peace Ranch which he and wife Vanessa created in South Ohio on the edge of Appalachia. According to Jorma, "Fur Peace Ranch is a ranch that grows guitar players." Classes and workshops are held throughout the summers with instructors who are also world class musicians. Fur Peace Ranch accommodates budding musicians of all skill levels. Jorma Kaukonen continues to perform with fellow musician, Jack Casady, in Hot Tuna.

The Rex Foundation gratefully acknowledges the contribution Jorma has made to a vast community of music lovers, musicians and underserved youth who will continue to be nurtured with this award.

Furthering what the Grateful Dead started 26 years ago, the Rex Foundation endeavors to fund grassroots programs that are often under the radar of larger funding entities, yet work in bold, innovative ways to carry out essential work toward a healthy environment, promotion of the arts, protection of indigenous cultures, assisting others less fortunate, building strong communities and educating children and adults everywhere.  The Rex Foundation has distributed $8.6 million in grants to over 1,000 program across the U.S. and internationally, while also carrying out initiatives that foster creativity and positive community connections.

Rock In Peace For Les Paul

Legendary recording artist, studio pioneer, and virtuoso guitarist Les Paul passed away at the age of 94 on August 13, 2009, due to complications from pneumonia. Despite having earned more than 30 gold records during his career, Paul is most famous for inventing the multi-track recorder and overdubbing his guitar playing. In addition, he nearly single-handedly popularized and revolutionized the solid-body guitar by experimenting with feedback, distortion, and note-holding. The electric guitar's ubiquitous role in rock and roll is largely due to Paul's contributions even though country, pop, jazz, and swing remained the innovator's music of choice. However, his name remains synonymous with the Gibson guitar named after him; more than 50 years after its introduction, it remains the model most commonly associated with rock--and musicians such as Slash, Eric Clapton, Pete Townsend, and Jimmy Page. The Wisconsin native's hits include "Wither Thou Goest," "How High the Moon," and "Vaya Con Dios." A multiple Grammy winner, Paul is also a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, National Inventors Hall of Fame inductee, and National Medal of Arts recipient.

LesPaulA private Funeral service will be held in New York. A service in Waukesha, WI will be announced at a later date. Details will follow and will be announced for all services. Memorial tributes for the public will be announced at a future date.  The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Les Paul Foundation, 236 West 30th Street, 7th Floor, New York, New York 10001.

For the past twelve years Les Paul appeared every Monday night at the Iridium Jazz Club despite advancing age and sever arthritis each week he delivered a first class show packed with his trademark guitar licks, hit songs and his patented ribald good humor.  An amazing run for any artist, but for Les this is what he lived for.  He was from the old school of the ‘show must go on’ so in that spirit the Iridium Jazz Club will continue to celebrate the man, his music and his legacy.

Gene Bertoncini | May 2nd | Our Lady Of Peace Church

geneOver decades, Gene Bertoncini has firmly established himself as one of the most eloquent and versatile masters of the guitar. With elegance and ease, he bridges jazz, classical, pop, and bossa nova styles, integrating his own spontaneous and tasteful improvisations along the way. He has earned highest critical acclaim for his artistry on both the classical and electric guitar.

Bertoncini’s musical roots go back to his early years in the Bronx where he grew up in a house filled with music. His love affair with the guitar began when he was seven, and by the time he was sixteen, he was appearing on New York television.

His career took an unusual turn when he decided to fulfill another long-standing interest, and took a degree in architecture at Notre Dame. He was quickly swept into the musical scene at the university, and the first thing he did after picking up his degree was to work opposite Carmen McRae in Chicago. He returned to New York to work with vibraphonist Mike Manieri, and then with a quintet led by drummer Buddy Rich.

He describes his architectural experience as something which gives his music its finely-wrought form and style. He wins continual praise for the superb structure of his arrangements and improvisations which serve as a vehicle for his virtuosic technique.

Gene Bertoncini has worked with the Metropolitan Opera orchestra, the Benny Goodman Sextet; singers Tony Bennett, Morgana King, Lena Horne, Vic Damone and Edye Gorme; jazzmen Buddy Rich, Wayne Shorter, Hubert Laws, Clark Terry, Paul Desmond, and Paul Winter; and arranger/composers Burt Bacharach, Lalo Schifrin and Michel LeGrand, among others. He performed regularly on the Merve Griffin and Johnny Carson shows, and has been one of the most prolific and popular studio musicians in New York City. For the past eight years Bertoncini has performed with bassist Michael Moore in a duo which The New York Times describes as “...one of the finest pairings of jazz strings....”

Mr. Bertoncini’s teaching credits include the Eastman School of Music where he regularly performs and conducts summer workshops for jazz guitarists, the New England Conservatory, New York University, and the Banff School of Fine Arts. He has been a highly sought-after guest clinician in colleges and universities throughout the country.

Yoko Ono's Remix of 'Give Peace a Chance'

Yoko Ono- for the Grateful Web

Following the milestone success of her two consecutive #1 Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart singles "NO, NO, NO" (THE REMIXES) and "GIVE PEACE A CHANCE" (THE REMIXES), seminal pop culture icon YOKO ONO closes 2008 as Billboard's #4 Hot Dance Club Play Artist of the Year. Her chart-topping remix singles (both issued on MINDTRAIN/TWISTED Records) seized the #4 ("No, No, No") and #20 ("Give Peace A Chance") spot, respectively, on Billboard's 2008 Year End Top 50 Hot Dance Club Play Tracks.

With another successful year under her belt, ONO kicks off 2009 with the long-awaited digital release of "GIVE PEACE A CHANCE" (THE INTERNATIONAL REMIXES) - the final installment of the avant-garde visionary's series of three digital-only, environmentally-friendly "green" remix singles.  Available February 18th on MINDTRAIN/TWISTED Records (Yoko's birthday!), the potent set includes electrifying reworks of the landmark world peace anthem which has been re-recorded by the tireless humanitarian as an uplifting poetic narrative resonating with a sense of urgency and optimism.

Speaking to today's worldwide tumultuous political, social and environmental climate, ONO transforms the timeless rallying cry into a galvanizing and timely global message of hope, inspiration and limitless possibilities in a time of change.

The poignant and evocative collection features a diverse assemblage of, established and emerging, international dance/electronic music innovators such as CSS (BRAZIL), KARSH KALE (INDIA), TSZPUN (CHINA), KIMBAR (RUSSIA),  DEATH IN VEGAS' RICHARD FEARLESS (ENGLAND), DJ MEME (BRAZIL), BLOW UP (ITALY), ALEX SANTER (GREECE), and FINDO GASK (SCOTLAND).

Yoko Ono's 'Give Peace A Chance' (The Remixes)

Ono''s Give Peace A Chance (The Remixes)- for the Grateful Web

Following the massive critical  and commercial success of Yoko Ono's ambitious remix collections –  YES, I'M A WITCH and OPEN YOUR BOX (MINDTRAIN/Astralwerks)  which paired the seminal performer with the 21st century underground -   ONO readies for the digital release of "GIVE PEACE A CHANCE" (THE REMIXES). The new release (available at Beatport.com and now at the iTunes Music Store) commemorates the 39th anniversary of the world peace anthem's historic June 1, 1969 recording.  The song was recorded during John Lennon and Yoko Ono's infamous week-long "Bed-In For Peace" in Room 1742 at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, Canada.

The enduring, landmark song has been re-recorded by ONO as an uplifting, poetic narrative resonating with a contemporary sense of urgency and optimism. The timely release speaks to today's tumultuous political, social and environmental climate.  And with it, Ono - the tireless humanitarian - offers a poignant and evocative mantra that is a song of hope, inspiration and limitless possibilities in a time of change.

For this important milestone release, MINDTRAIN Records again partners with legendary dance label TWISTED Records. Together they issued ONO's #1 Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart-toppers "WALKING ON THIN ICE" (The Remixes) and "EVERYMAN / EVERYWOMAN".

Concurrent with the release of "Give Peace a Chance," MINDTRAIN/TWISTED has  also digitally issued the highly sought-after and previously unreleased  mixes of ONO's #1 Billboard Hot Dance Club Play charting single "NO,  NO, NO" (THE REMIXES) and #2 charting "YOU'RE THE ONE" (THE REMIXES).  "No, No, No" includes superlative reconstructions from international superstars Linus Loves, Tom Novy, Eric  Kupper, Friscia and Lamboy, Peter Bailey and more.  "You're The One" (which was the #6 Billboard Dance track of 2007) includes vibrant re-workings by Bimbo Jones, Richard Morel (aka Morel),  Friscia and Lamboy, and Claude Le Gache.

Already the Hot Shot Debut and #1 Breakout, The Give Peace A Chance remixes now enter the Top 10 (#10 with a bullet) on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart. The releases thus far are part of a series of three digital-only, environmentally-friendly "green" singles, the third of which will feature a diverse assemblage of international dance/electronic music innovators, galvanizing the familiar and timeless rallying cry: "All we are saying is GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!"

Fur Peace Ranch Hosts Multi-Faceted Performer David Gans for Intimate Instructional Sessions

David Gans- for the Grateful Web

Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch will host multi-faceted performer, guitarist, and songwriter David Gans Friday, September 28 through Monday, October 1 for a series of intimate instructional sessions on electric and acoustic guitar looping techniques.

"I got the loop device as a way of enriching my solo performances," Gans explains. "I wanted to be able to record the chord changes of the song so I could play a guitar solo over top. But once I had that thing on the floor in front of me, I began to explore the creative possibilities. Now I'm able to improvise multi-layered musical structures onstage - and some of them become compositions after I get them into the studio for editing and analysis."

This first-hand workshop provides instruction in the use of a loop device as both an accompaniment for singer-songwriters and for the creation of multi-layered improvisations. Participating students need to bring a guitar that plugs in (acoustic or electric), and a Boss RC-20XL or RC-2 Loop Station.

For his live performances, Gans equips himself only with his sturdy baritone, a guitar and a pedal-controlled looping setup, the sum of which sounds anything but unaccompanied. Aside from these "solo" performances, Gans has performed with such legendary artists as Phil Lesh, Railroad Earth, Donna the Buffalo, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The String Cheese Incident, moe. and dozens of others. He has also written songs with a host of others, including Jim Page, Lorin Rowan, and Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter.

Conceived in 1989 by Jorma & Vanessa Kaukonen, The Fur Peace Ranch is nestled in the rolling foothills of southeast Ohio.  Over time it has evolved into an idyllic landscape of neatly arrayed cabins, workshop space, library, store, dining hall, plus a theater that hosts concerts performed by world-class musicians.

For class registration, please visit: www.furpeaceranch.com. For sample music and video along with further information on David Gans, please visit:  www.dgans.com.
