Grace Woodroofe Announces New Album on Modular

Australian folk-blues chanteuse, Grace Woodroofe, has been championed by fellow artists since she was barely sixteen. LA based artist collective The Masses heard demos she had entered into an Australian radio contest, and invited her to come to the US and record. Through this invitation she ended up collaborating with Mark Eitzel (American Music Club), Carlos Nino (Dublab Collective) and performer/arranger Justin Medal-Johnsen (NIN, Beck, Gnarls Barkley). After finishing her studies in Perth, Grace returned to LA and started work on Always Wantwith Ben Harper, who produced the debut album.

Always Wantis a collection of soul-stirring compositions that manage to explore darkness and discomfort and yet retain a mesmerizing tranquility. The fuzzed out guitars and thud in “Transformer” offset Grace’s gently seductive vocal. The melancholic twinkling of “Battles” underscores its story of a middle-aged waitress’ unsuccessful hunt for companionship. The heart-wrenching single “Quicksand” makes the Bowie classic soar from an understated and delicate arrangement to a spectacular climax replete with lush strings. Title track “Always Want” speaks to a not-so-unusual desire to want what feels just out of reach. The snarling garage stomper “Bear” is a tough love anthem that finds Grace on the hunt.

Grace’s live shows have been garnering raves across the globe. The LA Weekly recently declared her live show “powerful, dynamic, and striking."  She has toured with Cat Power and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and will be on tour with Ben Harper throughout the Fall.

2011 Morristown Jazz & Blues Festival

The Mayor of Morristown in northern New Jersey will host a free all day concert on the Town Green on Saturday, August 20th. The Morristown Jazz & Blues Festival will run from noon until 10:00 p.m. and features the Rusty Paul Band, the Duke Ellington Legacy Band, the Winard Harper Sextet, Baby Soda and the Jerry Vezza Quartet.

The music begins at noon with two sets by the Rusty Paul Band, led by the son of the legendary guitarist Les Paul. With a special blend of jazz, blues and funk, the six musicians will pay tribute to the great Les Paul as well as feature other popular tunes.

At 2:00, the Duke Ellington Legacy Band, under the leadership of Duke’s grandson Edward Kennedy Ellington II, takes the stage. With fresh arrangements by pianist Norman Simmons and sax great Virginia Mayhew, this 9-piece ensemble is dedicated to keeping Duke’s music alive and current. Most recently, the Legacy Band headlined the New Jersey Jazz Society’s Jazzfest 2011.

Following the Legacy Band will be the popular Winard Harper Sextet. Regarded as one of the elite jazz drummers on the current scene, Harper has performed with many jazz legends including Dr. Billy Taylor, Betty Carter, Dexter Gordon and Ray Bryant. Surrounding himself with extraordinary young musicians, Harper is an explosive drummer who is in demand all over the world.

At 6:00, five young musicians known as Baby Soda take the stage. On the forefront of a new movement known as street jazz, Baby Soda draws on an eclectic set of influences ranging from 30’s era swing, New Orleans jazz and gospel. The band maintains a busy schedule of performances which includes venues such as the Village Vanguard, the Knitting Factory and the Louis Armstrong House.

The festival closes with the Jerry Vezza Quartet featuring two of the regions’ most popular jazz musicians, pianist Jerry Vezza and singer/guitarist Grover Kemble. Joining Jerry and Grover will be Tom Sayek on drums and Rick Crane on bass.

The brainchild of Mayor Timothy Dougherty, the festival has been made possible by business sponsors including PSE&G, JCP&L, Riker Danzig, Brown and Brown Metro, The Metropolitan, 40 Park, Weichert Realtors, Roots, Trenk Depasquale, TSS Facility Services, Integra Management Corporation, Realty Management Associates, Belle Associates, Inglesino Pearlman and the Grasshopper Restaurant. Additional sponsors include WBGO, the Star-Ledger and the New Jersey Jazz Society.

The Morristown Jazz & Blues Festival will take place on the Green in Morristown rain or shine from noon until 10:00 p.m. Admission is free and many local restaurants will be offering specials for festival attendees. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets.

New Jersey 2011 Jazz Society Jazzfest

Each year since 1976, the New Jersey Jazz Society has presented Jazzfest, one of the best mainstream jazz festivals in the entire metropolitan area.  This year is no exception as this popular jazz festival presents nine hours of great music in the air conditioned comfort of two concert halls plus outdoor entertainment, a food court and vendors selling everything from hard-to-find CDs to crafts and interesting merchandise. Jazzfest will take place on the campus of the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, New Jersey on Saturday, June 11th from Noon to 9:00 p.m.

The afternoon lineup includes:

· The Winard Harper Sextet with special guest Phillip Harper and a rare reunion of the renowned Harper Brothers.

· The always entertaining Jay Leonhart joined by Harry Allen on saxophone and Joe Cohn on guitar.

· The swinging sounds of the Jazz Lobsters Big Band featuring Carrie Jackson on vocals and Larry McKenna on Tenor Sax.

· And the ever popular Ken Peplowski Quartet.

In the food court, the trad sounds of Emily Asher’s Garden Party will fill the air and the virtuoso trombonist will be joined by Dan Levinson on reeds, Bria Skonberg on Trumpet, Jared Engel on Banjo and John Phillip on Sousaphone.

The evening concert kicks off at 6:00 p.m. with the exciting vocals and guitar of Allan Harris and his Quartet followed by the critically acclaimed Ellington Legacy Band under the leadership of Edward Kennedy Ellington II. The Legacy Band also includes Norman Simmons on piano and Virginia Mayhew on Tenor Saxophone. Also at the evening concert, the New Jersey Jazz Society will honor Mayor Mary Anna Holden of Madison, and Jon Brauer and Anthony Ferrara of Toyota of Morristown.

Most of the music takes place in two venues, Dolan Hall in the Annunciation Center and the Octagon Theatre right next door. As an extra bonus, there will be a variety of vendors offering a wide selection of food, hard to find records, jazz CDs, art and crafts of all kinds. Admission to the craft and food court is free.

Jazzfest is made possible through the generous support of Toyota of Morristown, RXR Realty, the Star-Ledger, WBGO Jazz99FM, Hot House Magazine, Songbirds Agency, Hullarious Productions and the Madison Arts and Culture Alliance.

Free Download From Ben Harper, "Rock N' Roll Is Free"

Beginning today, Ben Harper will be giving away a free download of “Rock N’ Roll Is Free” at his website for a limited time. The track, which was Starbucks’ “Pick of the Week” last week, is the first single from his upcoming album, Give Till It’s Gone. The commercial single, video and ringtone for “Rock N’ Roll Is Free” will be available at all digital retailers beginning April 5th. Give Till It’s Gone, due out on May 17th on Virgin Records, was recently spotlighted in Rolling Stone’s Spring Music Preview.

The songs on Give Till It’s Gone – Harper’s first solo record since 2006’s Both Sides of the Gun – are nothing less than a revelation, expressing one man's struggle, confusion and, ultimately, redemption. Harper has never been afraid to dig deep into his emotions for his songs, but there's a sense of maturity and experience on Give Till It's Gone that add new weight to his efforts. Most of the album was recorded at the Los Angeles studio of Jackson Browne, who harmonizes with him on the wistful ”Pray That Our Love Sees The Dawn.” The album also features Ringo Starr on two tracks. “Spilling Faith” and “Get There From Here” were co- written in the studio with the legendary drummer. The pre-order for Give Till It’s Gone is underway now at iTunes.
Harper made his debut in 1994 with Welcome to the Cruel World, which was subsequently certified Gold. In 2005, he received GRAMMY awards for “Best Pop Instrumental Performance” for his single “11th Commandment” and for “Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album” for There Will Be A Light, featuring the Blind Boys of Alabama. Harper formed Fistful of Mercy with Dhani Harrison and Joseph Arthur and the trio released the album As I Call You Down in 2010. He will be playing a mixture of headlining shows and festivals this year, including Lollapalooza Chile this Saturday, April 2nd.
