Great American Taxi announces 2010 fall tour

Revered as one of the most energetic country-, rock- and bluegrass-influenced Americana bands in the land, Great American Taxi announces tour dates that will feature some of the most innovative and acclaimed players currently on the jamband/newgrass and Americana scenes.

Taxi’s Fall Harvest Tour will showcase the exceptional instrumental and versatile vocal abilities of Drew Emmitt, who will bring his mandolin virtuosity appearing with both Leftover Salmon and his own Drew Emmitt Band. The latter is on the October 29 bill in Englewood, CO. Emmitt will team with (The String Cheese Incident) as Billy NershiNershi-Emmitt to perform with Taxi for one night only at the Wow Hall in Eugene, OR, on November 7.

Modern troubadour Todd Snider continues to add concert dates with Great American Taxi. Snider brings his guitar, piano, and harmonica along with his stellar musicianship and treasured lyrics to the stage with Taxi and the Drew Emmitt Band on October 29 and Leftover Salmon, October 30 in Denver.  Snider is currently criss-crossing the country playing dates in support of his recent release The Excitement Plan.

David Nelson Band brings its exploratory improvisational jam sessions to November 12 and 14 dates in Sebastopol, CA, and Ukiah, CA, respectively. The group features Nelson (New Riders of the Purple Sage) on guitar and vocals; Barry Sless (Phil Lesh and Friends) on pedal steel and guitar; Pete Sears (Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna) on bass and vocals; and John Molo (Phil Lesh and Friends) on drums and Mookie Siegel on keyboard, accordion and vocals.

Taxi’s latest CD release, Reckless Habits, climbed to No. 3 and remains in the Top Ten for spins on both the Jambands.com radio chart and the Colorado radio chart, complemented by two months in the Top 25 on the Americana radio chart.

Lubriphonic to Open for Widespread Panic, CD Release Party & Free CD Download

Seasoned veterans of Chicago's blues scene Lubriphonic is a horn-infused, funk and soul stew.  The Gig Is On is their new CD which is due out later this fall and features a vintage sound steeped in soulful horn melodies that balance the searing guitar and pulsing rhythm section. To give the music community a ‘taster spoon’ of what Lubriphonic is all about, the band is offering the CD for free download via their websiteLubriphonic's funkier side shows up large with guest keyboardist Ivan Neville and his New Orleans treatment on four CD tracks. The CD Release Party for The Gig Is On is being held Saturday, September 25 at the Double Door in Chicago. Additionally, Lubriphonic is confirmed as the opening act at the October 8 Widespread Panic show at the Midland Theater in Kansas City, MO, a rare opening slot indeed for Widespread Panic, Confirms Hometown CD Release Party & Offers Free Download of New CD During September

Lubriphonic is the brainchild of guitarist Giles Corey and drummer Rick King which began as a residency at Chicago’s legendary Checkerboard Lounge, where they recruited some of the best blues, funk, and rock musicians in the city for improvisational live sessions in which the kinetic energy that make a band were initiated.  The evolution from performing as sidemen for the city’s most legendary blues stars such as Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Koko Taylor into an original group came from the hunger of each musician to develop an intense and simmering sound.

That sound continues as Lubriphonic’s nationwide tour threads down the West Coast this week with their CD Release Party coming up in Chicago next week. Music fans of all ages and backgrounds will find something familiar and enjoyable about Lubriphonic and with no strings attached, everyone can download a full copy of their new studio CD, The Gig Is On, here.

Smashing Pumpkins new single "Spangled"

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS are issuing a brand new track “Spangled” Tuesday, September 14, available exclusively as a free download for 24 hours through the website for The Sweet Relief Musicians Fund: www.sweetrelief.org. Spangled” will then become available the next day (Wednesday, September 15) at www.smashingpumpkins.com where a widget is also offered that enables fans to host the song anywhere on the web. “It’s just a pretty song,” says BILLY CORGAN of “Spangled,” which marks the sixth release from the band’s in-progress 44-song project TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE. It is the second song (the recently released “Freak” was the first) from what will be the band’s second EP--TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE VOLUME 2: THE SOLSTICE BARE --tied to this project.

When visitors go to the Sweet Relief website, they’ll be encouraged to donate to the organization, although it is not a requirement to contribute money when freely downloading the song. The Sweet Relief Musicians Fund is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides financial assistance to all types of career musicians who are struggling to make ends meet while facing illness, disability, or age-related problems.  Visitors to the site who donate $10.00 (or more) to the Sweet Musicians Relief Fund can also enter a raffle to win a Fender “Billy Corgan Stratocaster” custom guitar that will be signed by the musician.

The Pumpkins recently raised over $80,000 at their sold-out benefit concert Tuesday, July 27 at Chicago’s Metro for Matthew Leone, bassist for Chicago band Madina Lake. The money is going to the Matthew Leone Fund at Sweet Relief and is helping to pay for the ongoing medical care needed for the musician who this past June was hospitalized with severe brain trauma after intervening to stop a woman he passed on the street from being beaten by her husband.

In touring news, the band--singer/guitarist BILLY CORGAN, guitarist JEFF SCHROEDER, drummer MIKE BYRNE and bassist NICOLE FIORENTINO--have announced they will return to Australia this October for shows in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Red Mass Anounce US Tour Dates | To Play Pop Montreal

The brainchild of Roy Vucino, aka Choyce (CPC Gangbangs, The Daylight Lovers, Les Sexareenos), Red Mass took shape in 2008 following the inevitable implosion of the volatile and legendary CPC Gangbangs. Using Red Mass as a platform, Choyce and his collaborators are intent to pursue the ideals of free thinking, the use of chaos, sex-magik and liberation through art. The ever evolving line-up and contributors to Red Mass consist of musicians from Demon's Claws, Chocolat, Hot Springs, Black Feelings, Sunday Sinners, Vicious / Delicious and Ghost Limbs to name a few.
Through his prolific exploits, Choyce has helped give Montreal's flourishing garage and rock n' roll scenes international recognition. Having fronted CPC Gangbangs, he now also records and tours with long time collaborator Mark Sultan (Sup Pop, In The Red).
Now, Red Mass has opened itself to all with a sincere belief that it can offer young artists and outsiders alike a new haven. With a slew of singles, 10"s, EPs and experimental releases, Red Mass is ready to hit. Their psychedelic space rock 'n' roll and its elements of noise, folk, punk and electronic music is a culmination of 12 years of hard work. The dark poppy hooks, laced with other worldy sound effects, are at once an ode to the past, the music of today, and the shape of rock 'n' roll to come.

Elizabeth & the Catapult return with a new album "The Other Side of Zero" & Fall Tour Dates

“If I had to compare our albums,” says Elizabeth Ziman, the singer/songwriter/keyboardist behind Elizabeth & the Catapult, “I’d say Taller Children has the sarcastic lightness of a Woody Allen film, and the new record’s more like Kubrick or Lynch—a little darker, a little more tongue-in-cheek.”
Not that any of these shifts are a surprise. After all, Elizabeth learned how to manipulate moods through music at an early age, whether that meant performing a wildly-expressive piano piece or belting out bizarre harmonies in New York’s world-renowned Young People’s Chorus.
And now this: The Other Side of Zero, an Elizabeth & the Catapult album that started with a Lincoln Center song cycle—performed last spring after a commission from NPR’s John Schaefer—and a cover-to-cover study of Leonard Cohen’s Book of Longing collection. As the latter’s pages sunk in, Elizabeth couldn’t help but draw parallels between Cohen’s failure to meet Buddhist goals in a monastery and her own coming-of-age struggles in the big city. (The New York native grew up in the heart of Greenwich Village.)
She also wrote Elizabeth & the Catapult’s rawest set of recordings yet, including the clanging chords and galloping groove of “The Horse and the Missing Cart,” the sputtering, string-grazed percussion of “You and Me,” “We All Fall Down, the Buddhist twist on a classic love song, “Julian Darling,” a wake up call to a friend and the hopeful but heartbroken contrasts of “Thank You For Nothing.” And then there’s the title track. Led by a lean, winding piano line, it builds to a spine-tingling crescendo alongside the honey-dipped harmonies of Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings—a collaboration that was completely unplanned. Not that you’d notice, considering how seamless it sounds.
Unlike their thoroughly-demoed debut—an album that took two years to complete—the Zero sessions boiled down to a month of recording with producer Tony Berg (Peter Gabriel, Phantom Planet, Jesca Hoop) and such respected sidemen as guitarist Blake Mills and Tom Waits’ longtime touring keyboardist, Patrick Warren. The result was rough but refined, bruised but beautiful, as if Berg had placed a mic in a room and walked away, letting Elizabeth and drummer/multi-instrumentalist Danny Molad do their thing.
As Molad puts it, “The record is more blatantly honest, even rude at times..." Elizabeth continues, "Even the happiest sounding pop songs on this record have a tinge of regret and darkness to them…And thank goodness for that. Ultimately that’s the only way I’d feel comfortable singing them. I’m drawn to the ambiguity like a menacing smile.”
