DeVotchKa Halloween Shows @ Boulder Theater

DeVotchKa Management announces a pair of Halloween shows at the Boulder Theatre on October 30 and 31, 2009, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Metro Denver Promotion of Letters, a nonprofit writing-tutoring organization. The organization was inspired by the 826 centers in San Francisco and New York that were started by author Dave Eggers.

devotchka“I’ve been friends with Dave Eggers for a long time,” says Rob Thomas, manager for DeVotchKa. “This is a great, local organization carrying on the good work that he does, and we are happy to support it.”

The band is also supporting Eggers’ own 826NYC by contributing a track to Songs From The Point! This yet-to-be-released compilation features interpretations of Harry Nilsson’s cult-classic The Point! All proceeds from the album benefit 826NYC. The album is on Amano Recordings with a slated release date for October 27, 2009, and also features Andrew Bird, Nada Surf, Martha Wainwright, and The Wheel.

Inspired by multiple tours of the Spanish countryside, DeVotchKa discovered the magic of the Matador.  Like all Souls Day of the past, DeVotchKa's music will transpire you into an unworldly passionate evening of swirling sensuous rhythms, beautiful trapeze artists and ornate bulls that may run amok!

Join DeVotchKa in a toast to our Spanish ancestors on these nights when the veil between life and death is at it's thinnest....  Complete with bull motifs and intricate costumes worthy of the iconic and aristocratic imagery of the bullfighter. Joining DeVotchKa will be Quixotic Performance Fusion, the wonderful and collaborative ensemble of musicians, dancers, aerialists, composers, designers, and choreographers that joined them in February for the beautiful Valentine’s Eve show at the Paramount Theatre. This will be Quixotic first performance in Boulder.

DeVotchKa enjoyed a great summer tour with David Byrne, which included a performance at Red Rocks in June. They also played several U.S. and Canadian Festivals in July—Mile High, High Sierra, Ottawa Bluesfest, and Montreal Jazzfest. Currently, DeVotchka are in Europe for the month of August, performing at festivals in Portugal, Scotland, Belgium, London, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, and Switzerland.

Tickets for the Halloween performance go on sale Saturday, August 8, 2009, at 10am (internet), 12pm (box office/phone).  Tickets are for sale from the band website www.devotchka.net or directly from Boulder Theater website  www.bouldertheater.com.

DEVOTCHKA in Boulder for Halloween

DEVOTCHKA - photos by Sam Holloway- for the Grateful Web
The times have finally caught up with acclaimed Denver quartet DeVotchKa. Not long ago when the band unloaded their instruments - a violin, a tuba and an accordion, among others - into a rock club, they were told they must be in the wrong place.
They created music that was Grammy nominated (DeVotchKa created the soundtrack for the indie smash Oscar winning film Little Miss Sunshine) without the benefit of a huge promotion team or runaway budget, instead relying only on their own efforts by self-releasing their records. And they crafted gems of songs by mixing a beautiful blend of Eastern European bohemia, American prairie rock and distinctive indie and called it pop, rather than world, music.
Now, the band is au courant, poised to shine on with their Anti- Records debut A Mad and Faithful Telling. From the cinematic richness of "Transliterator" to the modern pop experiment of "The Clockwise Witness," to the soaring and wrenching "Undone," DeVotchKa have produced a career-defining record and the world is listening.
On Sale Friday, September 19
October 31: GA / 21+ / $32.50
November 1: GA / All Ages / $32.50
Tickets are on sale now at The Boulder Theater Box Office. Call (303) 786-7030 for tickets by phone.  Tickets are also available through our website @ www.bouldertheater.com.

Halloween with Leftover Salmon at the Fillmore Auditorium

photos by Mike Moran- for the Grateful Web

Live Nation proudly presents LEFTOVER SALMON at the Fillmore Auditorium on Friday, October 31st.   Showtime is 7:00 PM. Doors open at 6:00 PM. Our fan ticketing will go on sale (HERE) today August 7th starting at 10am MST. The remaining tickets will be available thru ticketmaster starting Saturday August 9th.

After a four year hiatus, Leftover Salmon will again return to the Fillmore in Denver for its once traditional Halloween blowout. Following a summer full of festival dates, Leftover Salmon's Halloween show will mark one of the very few stand alone performances by the band since taking a break at the end of 2004.

The band is also offering music downloads to fans signed up on the Leftover Salmon email list. The downloads feature tunes recorded during recent live performances. The current download is from the Salmon set at the Mile High Music Fest in Denver, which went down just last month. GO HERE to download.

Umphrey's McGee Presents "Terror-Torium" on Halloween

photos by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

Umphrey's McGee pays tribute to Halloween and to classic American horror films with TERROR-TORIUM, a fright-filled evening of music, costumes and décor taking place at Denver's Fillmore Auditorium on October 31st. Fans are encouraged to dress as their favorite horror movie character and partake in a costume contest, with the winner taking home tickets to every Fillmore show for one year. Denver's own Kinetix will open the show.

The ascension continues for Chicago's Umphrey's McGee, not only in terms of their commercial success but in creative accomplishment and instrumental achievement as well.  Their performance on Live at the Murat (SCI Fidelity), their first official live release, is as impressive as anything they've recorded to date, with the power and finesse, the yin and the yang, that have come to characterize their by-now classic material.

Recorded in Indianapolis in April 2007 and produced by longtime "sound caresser" / honorary seventh member Kevin Browning, the two-disc set features fan favorites like "Push the Pig," "The Triple Wide," "In the Kitchen," and "Nothing Too Fancy" along with rare tunes like the set-ending "Padgett's Profile" and the brief but torrid "Angular Momentum," centered on the combo of drummer Kris Myers and guitarist Jake Cinninger.  The band also dusts off tunes like "Hajimemashite" from '98s Songs for Older Women, and the Yes meets Little Feat-influenced "40's Theme," a live favorite for the band and its fans.

Throughout the show, UM's invention brings the progressive instrumental chops of Zappa and the stylistic savvy of Steely Dan.  It is innovative without being indulgent, exhilarating without losing control, and there are plenty of improv passages that keep the band and their fans off-balance.  Clearly, logging 120 gigs a year, "live" is where UM lives.

The current list of confirmed tour dates is as follows:

October 04 Liberty Hall Lawrence KS
October 05 Granada Theater Dallas TX
October 06 Stubb's BBQ Austin TX

Live at the Murat is the latest feather in the cap of the dazzling sextet.  They followed their highly touted spring 2006 studio release Safety In Numbers with the magical odds and sods The Bottom Half in the spring of this year.  The album, with its outtakes, alternate versions, and other nifty bits, reached #26 on Billboard's coveted "Heatseakers" Chart and received high marks from the music press.  HARP magazine recently noted "…[The Bottom Half delivers] creamy studio work infused by diabolical skill."  Also in 2006, Umphrey's McGee sold out shows in theaters coast to coast, appeared at Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, and made their late night TV debut on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live."  Booked by the Monterey Peninsula Booking Agency, the band recently sold out three nights at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom, two nights at Irving Plaza, San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium, and the list goes on, as does Umphrey's McGee.
