Portland’s Black Prairie Offers Debut Album

Sugar Hill Records is proud to announce the upcoming release of Feast of the Hunters’ Moon, the debut album from Portland, Oregon-based Black Prairie. Featuring three-fifths of The Decemberists and two of the city’s finest folk stylists, the heavily acoustic debut was produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie) and embodies the rich sonic landscape of the Portland music scene while integrating the diverse backgrounds of its members. As described by dobroist Chris Funk, the band’s sound “bridges the music of Clarence White and Ennio Morricone” in a way that defies genre characterization.

Decemberists guitarist Funk and bassist Nate Query hatched the plan to start a primarily instrumental string band while on the road.  Funk began to spend time playing the square-necked Dobro guitar, and the pair recruited fellow Decemberist Jenny Conlee to play accordion.  Portland musicians Annalisa Tornfelt and Jon Neufeld then filled out the ranks on violin and guitar, respectively.

Black Prairie's songs consist mostly of instrumentals; their arrangements draw from bluegrass and old-time string band traditions, while Conlee’s accordion and Tornfelt’s violin instill klezmer and gypsy elements to the band’s unique and vibrant sound. The quintet sometimes takes an almost-classical approach to composition, with songs containing multiple movements that ebb and flow in a way that differs greatly from traditional pop or bluegrass structure.  The band decided it would be a shame not to make use of Tornfelt’s vocal ability, so she sings on a handful of tracks.
The thirteen album tracks include mostly original compositions by the five band members, with a smattering of traditional material intertwined throughout.  “All my weird songs have finally found a home in this group,” laughs guitarist Neufeld.  Sugar Hill Records will release Feast of the Hunters’ Moon on April 6, 2010.
The band will play select club dates and festivals through the fall of 2010, including:
February 27 - Noise Pop Festival San Francisco, CA
April 1 - The Woods, Portland, OR
April 2 - Sam Bonds Garage, Eugene, OR
April 3 - Tractor Tavern, Seattle, WA

Umphrey's McGee on Rock Band Network

Umphrey's McGee will be among the first group of bands to offer songs at the just-launched (beta testing period) Rock Band Network.

The much buzzed-about video game platform works with Xbox video game systems to allow bands to Xbox users, and to offer fans a way dig into their favorite band’s music in ways they have never been able to before.

Umphrey’s McGee has been working with former Harmonix Music Systems employee – and now “Rock Band” freelancer - Andrew Buch. An alumn of Berklee College of Music, Buch has author several Umphrey’s McGee songs for the new program, including “1348” and “Miss Tinkles Overture." These songs and others will be made available within the next few months - when the first wave of the Rock Band Network releases are scheduled to hit upon the release of the new Xbox 360 system.

Buch, whose video/music “claims-to-fame” include the underground release of his mind-numbingly difficult "Trippolette" in the original Guitar Hero, has worked on several games in the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises, making him a likely choice to prepare the music of Umphrey's McGee for the game. Additional work by Buch can be found at http://www.andrewbuch.com, including video footage of both Umphrey's McGee's music and the Rock Band network re-release of "Trippolette."

Umphrey’s McGee’s participation in the Rock Band network is one of many ways this band continues to prove themselves truly a band of the 21st century. The band’s innovative, interactive Stew Art Series (S2) has been hailed as a ground-breaking fan experience. Hosted as individual events before that evening’s already scheduled show, Umphrey’s Stew Art Series is a crowd-sourced improvisation experiment, in which all the music performed by the group on stage are entirely directed by S2 audience members. Check out this S2 video from the inaugural S2 event in Milwaukee: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYJn64XRGXU.

Cursive to Support Alkaline Trio on Spring Tour Dates

Cursive will support Alkaline Trio on their upcoming spring tour dates, which will take the band across the country and back beginning February 16th at the Glass House in Pomona, CA, and wrapping up April 2nd at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, CA.

Since the release of their sixth studio album Mama, I'm Swollen on Saddle Creek Records last March, Cursive has crisscrossed the country multiple times as a headliner. The band - long known for their indefatigable touring schedule as well as their incendiary, cathartic live show - completed their most recent tour in mid-December. Cursive's shows throughout 2009 drew acclaim, with Indianapolis, IN's Nuvo Weekly remarking, "Opening with 'Bloody Murderer' from their breakthrough album The Ugly Organ, the five-piece slashed through a near-perfect set of songs from their last nine years of albums" and Melophobe declaring, "Cursive has proved that they are not only solid musicians, but incredible performers with a stamina that can be matched by few."

Cursive also released videos for three songs off of Mama, I'm Swollen over the past ten months: "From The Hips" (here); "I Couldn't Love You" (here); and "Let Me Up" (here). The band also made their much-deserved network television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman on March 13, 2009 (watch it here).

DOUG KEITH: "The Lucky Ones"

Doug Keith, an exceptional artist and performer, is set to release his new full-length, The Lucky Ones, in March, 2010 (exact date tbc).  The Lucky Ones, an 11-song collection on indie imprint The Village Label, vividly showcases Keith’s strengths as a guitarist and songwriter, capturing significant emotional truths in every song.

The material on The Lucky Ones ranges from the acoustic starkness of "We Left Everything," to the surging electricity of "The Lucky Ones," to the buoyant textures of "Skip James Radio." His simple-yet-poignant lyrics are layered over soaring instrumental arrangements that are expertly tailored to create distinct aural atmospheres. The link connecting each track is Keith’s weathered, knowing voice, and the results are nothing short of breathtaking.

Although The Lucky Ones is only his second full-length solo album, Keith is no stranger to the studio or the life of a touring musician.  Music has been his passion for years, and it shows in the beauty and intimacy of his current work. Keith started his career playing bass with punk trio The Gods Hate Kansas, and went on to play with several other punk/avant-garde bands, including noted noise-rock combo Up the Empire.  But Keith always worked on his own material, releasing a four-song EP and half of a split 7" single under the name The First Person to See an Elephant.  Here’s to Outliving Me, his official solo debut in January of 2009, was the first release under his own name and his introduction to international audiences. With The Lucky Ones, Keith delivers a moving batch of songs that are a worthy follow-up – and natural progression – to his stunning debut.

Keith’s songs are honest and the emotions are pure, and this comes across in his raw beautiful live performances.

Cary Brothers: New dates, Songs & Ryan Adams cover

Cary Brothers- for the Grateful Web

Cary Brothers is returning to the stage with two exclusive performances in March.  It's been a full year since Cary toured America, as the last time was in March/April 08 to support his debut album "Who You Are", with Ingrid Michaelson, Joshua Radin, Sara Bareilles on the hugely popular Hotel Cafe Tour which he co-founded 5 years ago.

Cary has been in the studio for a latter part of 2008 and will preview a couple of tracks in the sets, like "Break Off The Bough," "Ghost Town," "After The Fall," and "Under Control" which will be on his, as of yet untitled, upcoming album.

See Cary Brothers video blog 2009.1 in which he previews a snippet of his new song "Ghost Town". He also plays an amazing cover of Ryan Adams' "Come Pick Me Up".

Last year, Cary Brothers "Ride" was remixed by the world famous DJ/producer Tiësto and the track became a European dance floor hit. Tiësto invited Cary to perform live on stage with him during his headlining slot at the Bonnaroo Festival and Tiësto's sold-out 20,000-capacity O2 Arena in London on 8/8/08. Besides the live shows in Europe, Japan and America, Cary also made several TV appearances, like Jimmy Kimmel and the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

"You can try having a party without this album blasting your bad luck into oblivion," cautions Van Zandt"but I wouldn't recommend it." As he did for the previous volumes in the 'Coolest Songs in the World' series, Little Steven studiously scoured the world for the best music, picking tracks that give this new compilation "a little bit of everything that's cool."

Emory Joseph presents 'Fennario – Songs By Jerry Garcia & Robert Hunter'

Jer- for the Grateful Web

NYC singer/songwriter Emory Joseph pays tribute to the songwriting team of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter, the principal songwriters for the Grateful Dead, with his upcoming release, Fennario - Songs by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter (street date August 19 on Iris Records).  At the time of Garcia's passing, the Grateful Dead had been together for 30 years and were the highest-grossing touring act in the world. For Fennario, Joseph carefully selected and recorded material that had never been released on studio albums and re-interpreted some of the best-loved Garcia/Hunter material.

The wide range of music on Fennario draws from the same American palette that inspired Garcia and Hunter, from the sweet country of "It Must Have Been the Roses" to the Memphis rock and roll of "Tennessee Jed" to the Muscle Shoals soul of "Sugaree."

To produce the album, Joseph enlisted the core group of top-shelf multi-instrumentalists he'd used on his critically acclaimed debut album, Labor & Spirits: Tom "T-Bone" Wolk (Hall and Oates, The SNL Band), Duke Levine and Jon Carroll (Mary Chapin Carpenter), and vocalist Soozie Tyrell (The E-Street Band).  The album's other principles are Larry Campbell (who was coming off eight years touring with Bob Dylan and who now plays with the Dead's Phil Lesh), and drummer Dennis McDermott (Marc Cohn). Fennario's twelve tracks were recorded in five 'round-the-clock days at New York's legendary Legacy Recording Studios. There are two guest performances, bassist Lincoln Schleiffer (on "Mission in the Rain") and long-time Garcia associate, mandolinist David Grisman (on "Brown-Eyed Women").

"I produced Fennario to be something that Deadheads and non-Deadheads alike could love." says Joseph.  "I absolutely wanted it to be a respectful tribute to a beautiful working partnership, and something that could maybe help to explain to the world why so many kids spent so many years of their youth following these songs around the country and back. Fennario is a long overdue letter to Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter for having written songs that have inspired, amazed, and informed me since I was twelve."
