Gent Jazz Festival 2011 line-up is complete

The line-up for the 10th edition of Gent Jazz Festival (July 7th – 17th, Bijloke) is complete, with bands such as Sonny Rollins, Daniel Lanois’ Black Dub feat. Trixie Whitley & Brian Blade, Return to Forever IV, Angus & Julia Stone, Absynthe Minded, Morcheeba, Al Di Meola World Sinfonia feat. Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Randy Brecker/Bill Evans Soulbop Band feat. Medeski, Martin & Wood, Michel Portal Quintet, Agnes Obel, Red Snapper, Dave Holland Quintet, Al Foster/George Mraz Quartet feat. Fred Hersch, Terence Blanchard Quintet and Nouvelle  Vague.

The following bands have already been announced: B.B. King, Gotan Project, Raphael Saadiq, Mavis Staples, Jef Neve Trio and Sing The Truth with Angelique Kidjo, Dianne Reeves & Lizz Wright.

The 10th edition of the Gent Jazz Festival will begin on Thursday July 7th with none other than Sonny Rollins as the Special Nights’ headliner. This jazz legend had been on the festival’s wish list for a very long time and the birthday edition is an excellent occasion. His concert is preceded by the Michel Portal Quintet. The Nathan Daems Quintet, opens the Special Night after having won Young Jazz Talent 2010, the youth contest held yearly on the festival’s fringes.

On Friday the 8th of July, Al Di Meola World Sinfonia, together with special guest Gonzalo Rubalcaba will perform, with Dave Holland Quintet and Al Foster/George Mraz Quartet feat. Fred Hersch. The day’s opener is a coaching project in co-operation with University College Conservatory Ghent called Quartet dal Cuore feat. Paolo Ghetti.

July 9th is the festival’s first Saturday and a Special Night as well. B.B. King, Mavis Staples and the trio of Steven De Bruyn, Tony Gyselinck & Roland will be present.

On Sunday July 10th, the festival’s first four days will be concluded by Return to Forever IV Hymn of the 7th Galaxy Tour (an excellent band with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, Jean-Luc Ponty and Frank Gambale). The Belgian Rêve D’ Éléphant Orchestra will open before Terence Blanchard Quintet and Randy Brecker/Bill Evans Soulbop Band with Medeski, Martin & Wood.

Thursday July 14th three jazz queens will line up with Sing The Truth: Angelique Kidjo, Dianne Reeves & Lizz Wright continue the legacies of Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln and Odetta. Three current icons will pay tribute to the women of song from the last generation. They will be preceded by Jef Neve and his trio and Philip Catherine Plays Cole Porter.

Both revelations Agnes Obel and Agnus & Julia Stone are on stage Friday July 15th. This day will be supplemented by local band  Absynthe Minded. It’s a day dedicated to bands currently breaking through internationally and striving to meet high expectations in the future.

Gent Jazz Festival announces Gotan Project who are electro-tango masters and a retro-funk musician Raphael Saadiq on July 16th. Nouvelle Vague will be the first group to play on the initial day of the Gentse Feesten.

Daniel Lanois’ Black Dub feat. Trixie Whitley & Brian Blade will play on the closing day, July 17th. The festival organization looks forward to this concert after having cancelled Daniel Lanois’ Black Dub last year due to a motorcycle accident. But we are looking forward to vocalist Trixie Whitley as well. Last year her performance won hearts and minds with a special project. Later that day groups include: BackBack which is a local band, Red Snapper and Morcheeba with frontwoman Skye in the original line-up.

The music contest ‘Young Jazz Talent Ghent, an initiative in co-operation Duvel-Moortgat brewery will take place at the festival grounds’ entrance. Free entry every time right before the first concert on the main stage.

New!

Thanks to the co-operation with the city museums in Ghent it is now possible to get free access to one of the 9 museums in Ghent using your Gent Jazz Festival Ticket as an admission ticket. Marc Brownstein Announces His First Full Length Production Project

Marc Brownstein, best known as the bassist for The Disco Biscuits, has a new project that has been making waves in other circles of late: he’s produced the entirety of McKenzie Eddy’s forthcoming album. “Retrograde,” the first single and video from her Brownstein-produced solo album, is currently available for free download as part of her mixtape, “A Prelude to My Next Excursion," which was just released and features Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, Nicole Wray, and Stalley.

With the "Retrograde" single seeing coverage from established hiphop outlets such as HipHopDX, HipHopSite.com, and others, the full length album is sure to have high visibility.

Download “A Prelude to My Next Excursion” here. Watch the “Retrograde” video here.

Eddy’s full length debut solo album, produced by Marc Brownstein of The Disco Biscuits in the Biscuits’ own Diamond Studios in Philadelphia, is scheduled for release in April. Studio production, in a variety of genres, is not new hat to Brownstein – but Mckenzie's album will be the first full length album produced entirely by Marc. The album, which also features vocals by the Platinum selling R&B singer Nicole Wray, features the beautiful and soulful storytelling of "the Baby Face of Hip Hop,” as Eddy was called by Elle Magazine this year.

The album, untitled as of yet, is slated to be one of four initial releases on the BiscoRoc label, a joint venture between the Disco Biscuits and Roc-a-Fella founder, and current BluRoc Records owner, Damon Dash. Other projects expected to be released this year on the label include the Disco Biscuits' mixtape, "SkiBeatz vs. The Disco Biscuits," which will also feature Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, and Stalley, in addition to Jay Electronica, Mos Def, the Cool Kids, and Jim Jones of the Diplomats rapping over remixes of TDB's "Planet Anthem" and Ski's "24 Hour Karate School," as well an all original, full length, hip-hop album entitled "BiscoRoc."

In addition to her Brownstein-produced solo album, McKenzie Eddy will be very busy in 2011. In early March, Eddy and Curren$y will co-star in the “Muscle Car Chronicles,” a musical short film and album inspired and produced by Sean O'Connell, executive produced by Damon Dash, and directed by Coodie and Chike of Creative Control. The “Muscle Car Chronicles” will be distributed by Def Jam Records.

Brownstein is currently on a six-week tour of the nation with his electronic side-project, Conspirator, which will make stops at the House of Blues in LA, the Congress Theater in Chicago, the Gramercy Theater in NYC, and the world famous Ultra Music Festival in Miami.

Lots of roots and jazz history at Jazz Middelheim 2010

There are names like Wayne Shorter Quartet, Hank Jones Trio, Ahmad Jamal, McCoy Tyner Trio feat. Joe Lovano, Dave Holland Flamenco Project and Toots Thielemans. The festival line up is nearly complete.

The festival opens on Thursday 12 August with Facing East, the Coltrane project of José James and Jef Neve. Pianists Hank Jones and McCoy Tyner both perform with their own trios and McCoy Tyner brings in Joe Lovano as his special guest.

On Sunday 15 August, the final  day of the festival, the latest programme additions include Chucho Valdés with his Afro Cuban Messengers and Dave Holland & Pepe Habichuela Flamenco Quintet feat. Josemi Carmona. Chris Joris Experience opens this final day of the festival.

1320 Records & Elm and Oak Release Alex B's MOMENTS Today

Flagged as one to watch in URB Magazine's "Top 100," today Alex B announces the release of his full-length debut studio album, Moments, co-released by his own Elm and Oak as well as 1320 Records (April 6, 2010).

Those familiar with Alex B already know that he tends to take a layered approach to everything, especially his music. The tracks on Moments are intricately crafted with immense care and attention to detail -- a careful mix of analog and digital sounds elevated by imaginative samples and the insight of a classically trained musician. The result is a blend of timeless warmth and future beats that is as easily adaptable to introspective time with one's headphones as it is to group mania on a mobbed dance floor.

In regards to Alex B's first single, "You and I Both Know" XLR8R raved that "within two minutes [the listener is] treated to a tweaked soul loop, delayed vocal stabs, sporadic percussive elements, and swirling synth arpeggiations wrapped around a descending bass melody."

Check out "You and I Both Know"

Moments Tracklist:

Steve Kimock Crazy Engine feat. Melvin Seals @ Tips FQ!

Please join us on Friday, May 1st at Tipitina's French Quarter with a performance by "The Guitar Monk" Steve Kimock and his new band Crazy Engine featuring Melvin Seals.

kimockSteve Kimock is one of today's most talented guitarists and composers, a master musician known for his uncanny ability to balance passion and power with soaring grace. Truly a Renaissance man, Kimock's guitar prowess has been heard in dozens of bands and special guest appearances including many Grateful Dead-family bands. For nearly four decades Steve Kimock has earned a reputation as a guitarist with an enlightened approach to melodic improvisation and has captured audiences from around the globe with his tasteful guitar speak and brilliant tone. Relix magazine recently dubbed Steve Kimock "The Guitar Monk" for his relentless pursuit of 'Zen and the art of guitar.'

Exploring a new direction, Crazy Engine is a Steve Kimock project unlike any other.
