Yonder Mountain String Band @ House of Blues

Coming up in March and April, Colorado-based Yonder Mountain String Band will tour in support of their latest album, The Show.

It's not often you hear of a neo-bluegrass band breaking into the national spotlight with a performance on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, tour dates with Dave Matthews, and selling out 9,000 seat venues (i.e., Red Rocks Amphitheater). Yonder Mountain String Band is clearly the exception to the rule, having performed in front of more than 250,000 fans over just the past year. In 2008, the band was even honored with the distinction of opening up for Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention (Denver, CO), which brought the group in front of 75,000 people at INVESCO Field at Mile High Stadium. Now in their 12th year as a group, Yonder continues to sell-out top music venues across the country including The Fillmore (San Francisco, CA), Red Rocks Amphitheater (Denver, CO), Pepsi Center (Denver, CO), Best Buy Theater (NYC), Stubb's (Austin, TX), House of Blues (Chicago, IL) and others.

Yonder Mountain String Band is comprised of Adam Aijala (guitar, vocals), Jeff Austin (mandolin, vocals), Dave Johnston (banjo, vocals) and Ben Kaufmann (bass, vocals). With the band having one of the strongest touring bases in the industry, fans and critics alike have been drawn to both their live shows and singular studio albums. Reporting from the All Good Music Festival (2009), journalist Jarrett Vellini from CNN Showbiz Tonight notes, "The trophy for best musical set goes to Yonder Mountain String Band who, as the sun began to set, left it all on the stage for an hour and a half. The pickers from Colorado had the audience dancing and shaking, kicking up a joyful storm of dust into the cool summer sky."

Commenting on their recent studio recording The Show, Rolling Stone critic Will Hermes says, "The concept is great: liberate bluegrass' hot-shit riffing and blue-sky harmonies from its hidebound formalism and see where it flies. This Boulder, CO crew brings dazzling chops to the table." Produced by rock producer Tom Rothrock (Beck, Foo Fighters), The Show marks Yonder's second go around with Rothrock and their fifth studio album released on their independent label, Frog Pad Records. Featuring the band backed by Elvis Costello's sideman Pete Thomas on drums on six tracks, The Show includes 14 original compositions written by various band members.

Yonder has always played music by its own design. Bending bluegrass, rock and countless other influences, they've come to pioneer a sound that they alone could only champion. With a traditional lineup of instruments, they may appear to be a traditional bluegrass band at first glance but they've taken the customary old-timey instrumentation (sans the fiddle) to new heights, transcending any single genre. Yonder has become a regular performer at major music festivals like the iconic Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Northwest String Summit and DelFest as well as massive multi-stage events like Austin City Limits Festival, Bonnaroo and Rothbury.

Devil Makes Three front man Pete Bernhard books solo gigs

After opening for Sea Sick Steve in NYC last week, Pete’s solo performances are a far bit different from his primary band but one key element remains the same - his defining vocal style, unique phrasing and his distinctive point of view.

devil-makes-threeAll the while, The Devil Makes Three "Do Wrong Right" continues to gain momentum.   After selling out shows all across the country via word of mouth from fans and friends, Do Wrong Right garners its 16th straight week on in the Top 10 of the Billboard Bluegrass Charts and the album continues to sell strongly each week.  The album holds steadily in heavy rotation on the college charts along with charting on the Americana/Jamband Chart.

Check out The Devil Makes Three LIVE on KEXP Performing "Do Wrong Right."  The Devil Makes Three Live @ KEXP was released digitally on 8.11. The EP includes four tracks played live in the studio of the famous Seattle based radio station and an interview.

The Devil Makes Three kicks off their Fall tour with gigs at Bumbershoot and Earthdance Peace Festival.

The Devil Makes Three quite possibly are the best band that you have never heard of. Constantly on tour, selling out dates across the country and in their neck of the woods on the West Coast, this band is busy packing their shows night after night, largely thanks to word of mouth.

Bonerama Hits The Front Range in December

photo by Janie Franz- for the Grateful Web

When Bonerama struts onstage with its four-trombone frontline, you can guess it's not quite like any rock 'n' roll band you've seen. When they tear into some vintage New Orleans funk, there's no questioning from which city these guys hail. And when those 'bones start ripping into Hendrix and Led Zeppelin licks, all stylistic bets are off.

Bonerama carries the brass-band concept to places unknown.  Hailed by Rolling Stone's David Fricke as "The ultimate in brass balls" last Fall, the band served as the House Band for the live all-star comedy event COMIC RELIEF.  The 2006 event, which featured a long list of A-talent including hosts Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams, was recorded live from Ceasar's Palace last November. Recently, Bonerama snagged the coveted "Best Rock Band" honor from the 2007 Big Easy Awards.

Since live performance is what Bonerama is all about, it's no coincidence that their third album, Bringing It Home, is also their third consecutive live disc. It also testifies to the amount of tightening-up the band's done in recent years. Joining another stack of Bonerama originals are covers ranging from the Meters and George Porter Jr. to the Beatles (two from the White Album, no less) to Thelonious Monk. And when they take on Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean" - with trombones doing the familiar backing vocals along with the big guitar riff - you can practically hear the audience's jaws dropping.

The current list of confirmed Bonerama tour dates is as follows:

November 08 Berlin Jazz Festival Berlin Germany
November 15 The Melting Point Athens GA
November 20 Palats and Pate Lafayette LA
November 21 Pearl At Commerce Dallas TX
November 22 The Parish Austin TX
December 05 Tipitina's Uptown New Orleans LA
December 16 The Fox Theatre Boulder CO
December 17 The Eldo Crested Butte CO
December 18 Samana Vail CO
December 19 The Aggie Fort Collins CO
December 20 Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom Denver CO
December 27 Miracle on Fulton Street New Orleans LA
December 31 City Limits Delray Beach FL
January 02 Mojo Kitchen Jacksonville Beach FL
January 03 Aces Lounge Bradenton FL
January 04 Jam Cruise 7 Ft. Lauderdale FL
April 18 Rummel High School Fundraiser New Orleans LA
May 15 Tulane Wave Goodbye 2009 New Orleans LA
May 30 Western Maryland Blues Festival Hagerstown MD

More dates will be announced.

Even in a city that doesn't play by the rules, New Orleans' Bonerama is something different. They're not a traditional brass band, but they've got brass to spare-even with no trumpets or saxes in sight. Bonerama features a dizzying display of trombone talent; four trombones, to be exact. Band leaders Mark Mullins and Craig Klein (of Harry Connick's band) shelf any jazz subtlety for Bonerama, opting instead for heavy funk, rock 'n' roll, and pure horn muscle.  Mullins and Klein are joined by fellow boners Steve Suter and Rick Trolsen, imaginative and dynamic sousaphone player Matt Perrine and edgy experimental guitarist Bert Cotton. The band also features a rotating cast of New Orleans' finest drummers, including Russell Batiste, Stanton Moore, Eric Bolivar, and Terence Higgins.

Kyle Hollingsworth Band Announces Front Range Run

photo by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

Ever the inventor, Kyle Hollingsworth has put together a group of Colorado's favorite musicians for a run of shows on the Front Range to celebrate the Leap Year 2008.  Featuring Ross Martin, Matt Spencer and Dave Watts of The Motet, who appeared on Hollingsworth's acclaimed solo release, Never Odd Or Even, the Kyle Hollingsworth Band will also include Boulder favorite Liza Oxnard and vocalist Jans Ingber.  A reunion of some of Boulder's best musicians, this will be their first performance together since the last leap year.

Expect the funky sounds that Hollingsworth is known for, as well as world beat influences and DJ turntables to mix it up.  Hollingsworth will debut some new material and bring out some old favorites from his years with The String Cheese Incident.  It's a new year with exciting possibilities - don't miss what the Kyle Hollingsworth Band has in store!

Hot Buttered Rum Celebrates New Years on the Front Range

photos by Michael Podrid- for the Grateful Web

In the Fall of 2006, itching to release their first live album, Hot Buttered Rum announced that it would be recording a handful of shows for official release.  Live in the Northeast (released May 2007) beautifully reveals the true core of live Butter: music that is forceful without being flashy, serious without being stuffy, intricate without being inaccessible, and diverse without being distracting.  The performances were professionally multi-tracked and later carefully mixed by Butter's long-time sound engineer, Josh Osmond. The result is striking, presenting the unique energy and improvisational spirit of a Hot Buttered Rum live performance in studio-quality sound.

Often described as a rock band playing bluegrass instruments, no prior Butter recording has so perfectly displayed the band's bolder and heavier side.  Their full sound permeates Live in the Northeast — from the reggae-tinged "Return Someday" and psychedelica of "Desert Rat" through definitive covers of the Grateful Dead's "Cumberland Blues" and Leo Sayer's "Feel Like Dancin'" — winding the listener through a robust and intense set of acoustic rock.

Hailing from the High Sierra of California, the guys of Hot Buttered Rum grew up on the trails, in the mountains, and on the slopes.  Their ties with nature have only grown and as a group, the band has dedicated much time and energy to reducing their carbon footprint and promoting alternative fuel sources.  As a heavily touring band, Hot Buttered Rum had to face the tough reality of how a national tour can affect the environment and counter it with a positive change.  In response, the band helped to promote the biofuel renaissance, touring the country on recycled vegetable oil and biodiesel as early as 2003.  Band members have participated in numerous Renewable Energy and Biofuel conferences, as well as sitting on discussion panels at such renowned music festivals as Bonnaroo and High Sierra.  Highlighted in the November/December 2005 issue of E: Environmental Magazine, Hot Buttered Rum is commended for trying to "leave an impact on its fans, and not solely on the road that passes beneath its bus tires as it travels from coast to coast".  For more information on Hot Buttered Rum and their greening efforts, visit the band's website, www.hotbutteredrum.net.

The widespread appeal of Hot Buttered Rum's music stems not only from the band's musical versatility and prolific songwriting, but also from the magnetic chemistry the group creates onstage together.  It is this chemistry that is propelling the band to ever greater success. The band has performed at festivals as diverse as the Newport Folk Festival, Bonnaroo, Grey Fox, High Sierra and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and has shared the stage with such artists as Phil Lesh, Bela Fleck, Ben Harper, Chris Thile, Mike Marshall and Peter Rowan, the last two of whom worked with the band on its critically-acclaimed studio release, Well-Oiled Machine.
