The Mynabirds Announce Spring Tour, Album in Stores Now

With this week’s release of her debut album as The Mynabirds, Laura Burhenn has officially turned the page from her role as one half of Georgie James.  Following The Mynabirds’ acclaimed first single “Numbers Don’t Lie,” Laura is giving another taste of What We Lose In The Fire We Gain In The Flood (Saddle Creek) with the bouncy, kiss-off anthem “Let The Record Go.”  Download the track HERE and if you haven’t heard “Numbers” yet you can check it out HERE.  For the next week you can also stream the full album HERE on Saddle Creek’s website.  Catch Laura and her band live when they kick off their spring tour on April 30th, which includes dates opening for Josh Ritter.

What We Lose draws from the gospel, old soul, and rock n roll that Burhenn was raised on, and many of the lyrics are inspired by a Zen-like view of the themes of loss and recovery.  With a surprisingly husky voice, considering her small stature, Burhenn adorns her words with a rich and emotive tone.  In the studio, singer-songwriter/producer Richard Swift helped carry out Burhenn’s vision, resulting in an album packed with both subtle detail and immediate charm.

The album also includes some notable guest artists.  Tom Hnatow (These United States) played pedal steel, Nate Walcott (Bright Eyes) arranged the horns on the album and backing vocals were provided by Orenda Fink (Azure Ray) and engineer/producer AJ Mogis (Monsters of Folk, Cursive, Tilly and The Wall).

Jann Klose Spring & Summer 2010 Dates

Jann Klose's new album, REVERIE, covers as much musical, sonic and emotional ground as Jann has himself.  Now living in the Bronx, New York, one of the most culturally diverse communities on earth, he has lived in distinctively unique parts of the planet.

Born in Mannheim, Germany, his family relocated to Nairobi, Kenya, when he was less than a year old. “Eastern Africa was full of impressions.  Because of my parents’ interest in travel, I experienced African culture first-hand at a very young age. Seeing and hearing African performers and their natural gift for song and dance had a strong impact on me.” A few years later, Jann and his family moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, “I remember my father taking us to a musical that I loved, called ‘The Warrior,’ starring the late Margaret Singana, who was very popular at that time in South Africa.”

For Jann, coming of age involved learning to understand human struggle in direct relationship to Africa and her people; shortly after Jann returned to Germany, Apartheid crumbled in South Africa.  At age 16, Jann was on the move again, this time to Cleveland, Ohio, where he attended high school as an exchange student and immersed himself in Cleveland’s burgeoning music scene.

He returned to Germany, to fulfill mandatory civil service, and then relocated to North East Ohio, where he studied voice with Emmy winner David Gooding, sang in the Cleveland Opera Chorus, and released two CDs on local label G21 Records (1997’s ENOUGH SAID and 1999’s THE STRANGEST THING).

In 2000, Jann moved to New York City, "After living in so many places, I felt like I came home to the world from the moment I arrived."  NYC offers a smorgasbord of arts, and Jann responded by going to every singing and acting audition he could attend.  Within a few months, he found work in the cast of the Broadway national touring company of JEKYLL & HYDE, and thereafter in the cast of the European tour of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.

Upon his return to the New York City pavements, he committed himself to his career as a singer/songwriter, recording BLACK BOX, a 2003 EP, which net him favorable reviews and career step-ups in touring. In 2005, Jann performed his music in MOONLIGHT INTERIOR, a movement theatre production directed by Yo-el Cassell, that had a brief, sold-out Off-Broadway run.

Jann and his band continued touring, playing over 250 shows in 10 U.S. States as well as Germany; licensing songs from BLACK BOX to the movie, DEAD BROKE, on Warner Bros Home DVD; compilation discs in overseas markets: PRAMBORS HITS 3 in Indonesia; and on car maker SAAB’s 60th anniversary CD in France.

After a 2005 digital release, LIVE AT THE BITTER END, NYC, Jann focused on recording a new full-length album. In addition to using monies collected from performance and licensing fees, he asked fans for a little help, “Using PBS as an example, I gave out autographed CDs and held private concerts for donors.”

Music industry folks also believed in Jann’s talent. Rob Grenoble, who runs premiere recording studio Water Music in Hoboken, NJ, “made it work” financially and time-wise in scheduling recording dates between May and August 2007.  Producer Stewart Lerman (The Roches, Loudon Wainwright III, Dar Williams, and films THE AVIATOR and THE LIFE AQUATIC) produced and mixed “Hold Me Down,” “Beautiful Dream,” “Give in to This Life,” and mixed “Doing Time” on REVERIE.

Both Lerman and Grenoble had enough faith in Jann’s discipline and musical abilities to encourage him to produce much of the album himself.  Jann tapped Water Music engineer James Frazee to run the board, mix, and offer critical feedback.  Dominick Maita (Fall Out Boy, Bryan Ferry, Plain White T’s) mastered the album.

Jann collaborated extensively with Lerman and his band mates Chris Marolf (upright bass), Lars Potteiger (keys, accordion), Patrick Carmichael (drums) and Leah Potteiger (violin) on arrangements.  Additional musicians on the album include:  Pedro da Silva (Portuguese guitar), Megan Marolf (oboe), Ryan Scott (electric guitar), Dan Brantigan (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Doug Hinrichs (percussion).

Jann continues to grow as an artist.  “Last year I wrote a piece for tenor and baritone for my sister's wedding.  Art is about appreciating other people's sense of self-expression; this observation inspires me to let my own imagination run free.”

1320 Records to Release John Hughes' RESET THE WAREHOUSE May 18th

STS9's boutique record label, 1320 Records, proudly presents Reset the Warehouse, the new studio release from John Hughes (May 18th, 2010 / 1320 Records).  A new recording studio, a new record label, and a new record allow John Hughes to step out from the familiar surroundings of Hefty Records, the label he founded in 1996, to strengthen his creative partnership with 1320 Records.

Though Hughes has collaborated with label-founders STS9 for years, this marks his first official release on 1320-an alliance long in the making, given both parties' shared mission of creating and supporting new music under artist-run labels.  Like Hefty, 1320 is an independent, musician-run collective that stresses cooperation between the artist and label.

According to Hughes, "Working with 1320 affords [him] the freedom to focus entirely on the music and the live performances in support of the record."

And, STS9 adds about Hefty, "few contemporary American labels have had as much influence on [the band]. We are extremely honored and excited to be apart of the 'Reset' release."

Hughes has recorded and released over a dozen albums under various aliases and groups like Slicker, Brood, Some Water and Sun, and Bill Ding, as well as under his own name.  His latest creation, Reset the Warehouse, represents the prime selections from a productive period of meticulous tracking and experimentation at his HFT Studio, located outside of Chicago.

Working with a team of veteran musicians and trusted collaborators, Hughes has assembled a cohesive union of styles and recording techniques, resulting in a record that explores uncharted directions while remaining rooted in sounds and beats that a listener may only describe as "classic."

As Hughes explains, "I wanted this recording to have a live, gritty sound, so I took it outside of the computer as much as I could. It was mixed through a board to tape, and the synths are all analog. Within the context of an electronic record, the live performances also help give it a warm, organic feel."

When it came time to edit and mix the tracks, Hughes looked to vibraphonist Rick Embach, who was involved in the sessions from the earliest stages, as well as his old friend Joshua Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv.  Hughes brought his recording sessions to Eustis' studio in Chicago, and together they mixed the tracks thorough an analog mixing board and then to two-track tape, giving the album the finishing touches and appropriate analog "glue" it required.

Visit here to view the entire supporting cast of Reset the Warehouse.

The Reset the Warehouse track list is as follows:

1.  A Reflection of the Times

2.  Waukee Wallop

3.  Another One

4.  Reset The Warehouse

5.  Pterodactyl Piano Bar

6.  Little Dot in the Sky

7.  Done Everything

8.  Moan Pop Asheesh

9.  Witchfinger

10.  You Don't Love Me

11.  Wow, I Think I Love You

12.  Naphtha Jets

As his work in the studio continues to evolve, and interest in his music continues to soar, John Hughes takes to the road this summer with label mates STS9, in support of Reset the Warehouse.  Hughes will perform this August and September with STS9 at select events in NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and at the infamous Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.

Toots & The Maytals Release New Album, US Tour & MP3!

Reggae legends Toots and The Maytals are happy to announce the release of the band’s latest record Flip & Twist, released today digitally and in stores May 18. In honor of today’s national holiday, Toots is releasing a special, 4/20-themed limited edition package, which includes a joint-shaped USB drive loaded with Flip & Twist, a Toots Stash Box, the physical CD of the album, and a variety of other gifts. The package is available via the band’s website along with digital copies of the album. For a taste of what the full album holds, the band is offering a FREE MP3 download of the song “Perfect Lover” available for download HERE.

One of reggae’s founding fathers, Toots Hibbert has been one of the leading figures for over four decades. Rising to prominence in the ’60s alongside greats like Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, Toots’ soulful voice has earned him comparisons to Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye and Wilson Pickett making him one of the most respected and versatile artists in these genres. And on Flip & Twist, Toots delves into his soul and R&B influences, creating a record that’s as much Kingston, Jamaica as it is 1960s Detroit. The album’s opener “Almighty Way,” is a modern day gospel-soul classic. “Fool For You” finds Toots at his most vulnerable, creating a soulful ballad a la The Four Tops. Toots also tackles Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground,” turning the song into a contemporary reggae classic. And on “Jungle” and “Maybe Yow” Toots delves into dance music, building catchy melodies catchy hip-hop beats.

Sean Bones is coming to Aspen!

Sean says:   "This winter I fought off the nasty weather with a drum machine. I got this old wooden Hammond thing in the fall, and I’d hide out in my draughty bedroom at night, meditating on tonal beats while winter buried my van and ripped leaves from the trees. After a period of falling asleep to its punchy tick tock on the bedside table, song skeletons started to take shape in my dreams. Specifically a melodic “Latin” setting started to infect my day like all the nose blowers at work. Soon I was sick. And I was coughing in time. I called my brother to come over with his bass and we blasted our new song out the window until the snow started to melt. That’s how I made the spring happen on my street."

"Sounds like Bones and his cough both got productive. And check the line “I’m gonna catch whatever you’ve got.” Sickness affected and infected his lyrics here as well. “Rhumba Beat”’s watery lead guitar and organ almost obscure the titular beat, before it changes entirely during the second half of the single. Maybe “Rhumba   Beat” signals outdoor activity weather, but it briefly hints at a darkened dancefloor as well."

AM Taxi Announces Debut Album & Spring Tour Dates

AM Taxi— so-called because they’re all about moving across the U.S. towards their destination—gets ready to hit the road…hard. The guys will be touring in support of Spill Canvas late Spring with
additional dates for this Summer’s Warped Tour, starting June 24 through August 15. AM Taxi are one of the few groups booked for the entire prestigious concert series prior to releasing an album. They’ve already been out on the road with the likes of Sum 41 and The Ataris, while opening for The Offspring at Summerfest in Milwaukee, so they’re more than up for the task.
“Our goal is to take that 45 or 60 minutes and let people get away for a little bit,” says lead singer and guitarist Adam Krier, “maybe even convert some of ‘em to AM Taxi fans. And, if they dig what we’re doing, maybe they’ll check out some of the stuff that influenced us.”
Take one listen to AM Taxi’s Virgin records debut, We Don’t Stand A Chance to be released June 8, 2010 and you can hear reverence for the past and hope for the future, a band that can cut across any age or genre demographics. The band just wrapped their video for the single ‘The Mistake.' With a blend of old-school punk, world beat and modern pop influences, the Chicago-based band combines experience with exuberance.
“I try to write songs about things people can relate to,” nods Adam. “For me, the best music, at the end of the day, is therapeutic. That’s always in the back of my mind a little when I’m sitting down to write.”
Recorded in Austin, TX, with renowned producer Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Patty Griffin,...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead), AM Taxi’s major label bow, offers a variety of different styles, from old-school punk to world beat and modern pop. “The Mistake” is a heart-on-the-sleeve confessional that recalls the Replacements, while “Fed Up” is a Springsteen-by-way-of-The Hold Steady classic rock raver, “Dead Street” sports a Police-styled world beat and “Charissa” a Clash-esque reggae rhythm.

Chicago Power-Poppers Baby Teeth Hit The Road in Support of Hustle Beach

Chicago's favorite power-pop trio, Baby Teeth, are hitting the road with their brand of arena-ready anthems of suburban dystopia and real-world candor. Baby Teeth is comprised of songwriter, keyboardist, and singer Abraham Levitan (Bobby Conn and the Glass Gypsies, Pearly Sweets and the Platonics), who heads a piano-teaching group and composes music for underground theater, bassist Jim Cooper (Detholz!, Bobby Conn and the Glass Gypsies), a film composer and church orchestra director, and drummer Peter Andreadis (All City Affairs), a mastering engineer and live sound man for The Sea and Cake. Celebrated for their chops, songwriting and massively entertaining live shows, Baby Teeth concentrate their musical talents, literate lyrics and strong melodies into hard-hitting, brainy pop. If you'll look below in the tour dates, you'll even see that Baby Teeth will be performing at Shea Stadium, perhaps the show they were born to play?

Chicago and The Doobies Still Smokin It Up

Sure, the bands may be old and the music not quite up to date by the standards of today's young teens and adults, but Chicago and The Doobie Brothers showed that even in the millennium they can still draw in a crowd.

"Chasin' Gus' Ghost" Featuring Chicago's Charlie Musselwhite

Charlie Musselwhite- for the Grateful Web

Among the luminary musicians featured in the acclaimed music documentary "Chasin' Gus' Ghost" is Chicago bluesman Charlie Musselwhite.  He is one of many to cite jug band music as a source of inspiration early in his musical career.  Says Musselwhite in the film, "I think jug bands is where the later electric blues came from.  It's an important part of American music."

Musselwhite is an acclaimed blues harp player from Mississippi who made his way north on Highway 51 to Chicago looking for work.  In Chicago, he immersed himself in music and met legends such as Buddy Guy, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters.  He has released over 20 albums, topped Billboard's blues charts, performed on Grammy-winning records and is synonymous with Chicago blues.  Musselwhite will perform at the Will Shade Gravestone Benefit Tribute Concert following the screening of "Chasin' Gus' Ghost."

The bluesman's source of musical inspiration is echoed by legends like Bob Weir (Grateful Dead), John Sebastian (Lovin' Spoonful) and David Grisman throughout the film.  The Grateful Dead - one of the best-known bands in American music - started as a jug band, Mother McRee's Uptown Jug Champions.  Weir and Jerry Garcia created the band on one fateful New Year's Eve, a historic meeting that Weir discusses in the film.

"Chasin' Gus' Ghost" is entertaining and educational.  Full of archival video and concert footage featuring John Sebastian, Jim Kweskin and the beloved jug and washtub bass master Fritz Richmond, this film is a must-see for any music fan.
