Big Head Todd & The Monsters Announce 2011 Summer Plans

Longtime Colorado favorites Big Head Todd and The Monsters have mapped out their summer tour plans. In addition to a handful of theatres in the midwest, the band headlines their annual Red Rocks Amphitheatre gig on June 11, where Guster will be on hand to open the show. The band also returns to Chicago’s famed Ravinia Festival and to the idyllic Colorado mountain town of Telluride for the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival, later this summer. The complete list of summer tour dates is listed below.

Earlier this year, in celebration of influential bluesman Robert Johnson (who would be celebrating his 100 birthday on May 8, 2011), Big Head Todd and The Monsters assembled the Big Head Blues Club. The ad-hoc collaboration featuring Big Head Todd and The Monsters and special guests B.B. King, Hubert Sumlin, Honeyboy Edwards, Charlie Musselwhite, Ruthie Foster, Cedric Burnside and Lightnin’ Malcolm toured earlier this year and recently released a studio recording of the project, titled 100 Years of Robert Johnson. Here’s what critics are saying:

“A superb musical collective…moving and wildly entertaining.” –Boston Globe

“Todd Park Mohr’s growling and moaning like he's got muddy Delta dirt under his fingernails.” -USA Today

Big Head Todd frontman Todd Park Mohr will be at the 32nd Annual Blues Music Awards on May 5th at the Cook Convention Center in Memphis, Tennessee. Todd will lead a Robert Johnson tribute. This year’s event also features performances by honorees Buddy Guy, Denise LaSalle and John Hammond, among others. Visit www.blues.org for more information.

Phish | Telluride, CO | August 2010

The Grateful Web trekked out to lovely Telluride, Colorado last week for Phish's shows in one of the most majestic places to ski, ride and see some of the greatest bluegrass, jazz, and in this case one of the greatest live acts to ever grace the stage in Town Park.  Phish, who has not played Telluride since their 1991 shows, was in fine form for what many anticipated to be the best run of the summer.   The beauty of Telluride and the 15th anniversary of the death of Jerry Garcia had many in the audience expecting some kind of homage to Jerry, and Phish did not disappoint. -- During their newish song, 'Summer of 1989,” Trey began singing about the “summer of 1995” -- I am not sure if everyone in the audience noticed this more than subtle homage to Jerry, but my friends were all trying to fight back a tear or two during this kind moment.

Personally I found the majority of the 2nd night to be a bit more energetic and more well-played -- but bits and pieces of the first night had their moments -- Quinn the Eskimo > Tweezer Reprise was pretty special -- and the Julius to close out set 1 was full of life.   The 2nd night had more highlights, including: Yamar, Antelope, Carini, Mike's Song > Crosseyed & Painless > I am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove.

Later in the evening Trey told a story about their first ever road trip as a band, which was supposed to be a big Colorado tour -- Instead -- Phish ending up "playing to the same 12 people" and the tour turned out to be a week in Telluride -- which is never a bad place to be.

Check out lots of photos and videos from the shows.  We hope you enioy!

Thanks,

The Grateful Web

Irish Rockabilly sensation Imelda May returns to the States

After her show stopping performance with Jeff Beck for the Les Paul tribute on the Grammys, Imelda May has been invited back to perform with Beck, including two shows at New York's Iridium.  These exclusive shows will feature Imelda May + Jeff Beck performing songs written and performed by the legendary Les Paul - with Imelda reviving the extraordinary vocals of Mary Ford in her own unique style. The show will also feature some great rock & roll classics - all performed with Imelda's great band.  In addition to these shows, Imelda will be performing two shows at Bonnaroo, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and even more headlining performances!
Dublin-born May, who has previously shared stages with Jeff Beck as well as Van Morrison, made her major label debut in late 2009 with Love Tattoo (Verve), which shot to #1 on the Irish charts, ahead of Bruce Springsteen and Eminem. Throughout the U.K. and Ireland, she has won honors from Rising Star of 2009 and Jazz Artist of 2009 to Best Female Newcomer.  Shaking up traditional jazz with a magnificent voice that channels both Janis Joplin and Patsy Cline, her mix of jazz, rockabilly and blues yields a cool, swinging fusion both classic and oddly modern.  Her fierce, unbridled concert performances have a reputation for being impassioned events.
