Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks' Crazy for Christmas out now

Hailed as, “The eternal hipster, purveyor of the drollest and most swingin' tunes the rock generation ever enjoyed” (Minneapolis Star Tribune), Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks have hijacked the holidays and created a Christmas album you’ll enjoy all year long. Released on October 12, 2010 through Surfdog Records, Crazy For Christmas is classic Hot Licks, full of the same dry wit and musical brilliance that has defined Dan Hicks’ music for the past four decades and established him as one of American music’s true cult heroes.

“We wanted to have the Hot Licks sound going, with our signature violin and guitar and two girls backing me up and the tongue-in-cheek approach to the material and the delivery. Keeping it swingin’, keeping it light, with lots of good solos and some cool scat stuff,” explains Dan Hicks. “It’s a Christmas album, yes, but first and foremost it’s a Hot Licks album.” Crazy For Christmas covers it all - with Hicks originals “I’ve Got Christmas By The Tail” and the humorous “Santa’s Workshop” nestled in with classics (done Hicks’ style) like “Here Comes Santa Claus” and an amazing original take on “Carol Of The Bells.” Of course, no Dan Hicks holiday album would be complete without a few irreverent parodies including “Christmas Mornin’” (done in the tune of Hicks’ hit “Where’s The Money”) and “Santa Got A Choo-Choo” (a Hicks re-write and salute to “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie”).

Crazy For Christmas comes on the heels of Hicks’ critically acclaimed 2009 release Tangled Tales. The recording, dubbed an “irreverent, rowdy, even dangerous distillation of real American music,” by the East Bay Express, proved once-and-for-all that Hicks’ undeniable musical legacy is still evolving. “Talk about a rugged, all-American individual,” the LA Weekly reviewed, “Dan Hicks has plowed deep furrows through some of the most fertile pop music territory known to man, and during it all has maintained both his own distinct, light yet emphatic touch and a pace that's always kept him more than a few steps ahead of his colleagues.”

Dan Hicks began his career in 1965 as the drummer for psychedelic San Francisco rock band The Charlatans before forming the acoustic ensemble Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks. His unique songwriting and blend of styles, masterful folk-swing guitar playing, and unmistakable sense of humor have made him a cultural icon, landing Hicks on the cover of Rolling Stone twice and provoking Tom Waits to say, “Dan Hicks is fly, sly, wily and dry” while Elvis Costello proclaimed him “an American treasure.”

Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks are on tour this fall with their always over-the-top “Holidaze in Hicksville” extravaganza.

Umphrey's McGee's S2 Stew Art Series featured at Time.com

Umphrey’s McGee’s innovative Stew Art Series (aka, “S2”) – an interactive fan experience where audience members “conduct” the band’s live improvisations - continues to garner industry attention for its ground breaking approach to building the ever-important band/fan relationship. Most recent: Time.com just posted a video feature on the band and their S2 series.

Umphrey’s will host their next S2 event this Friday, October 22, at Michigan’s Kalamazoo State Theatre. As with all S2 shows, the event sold out in just minutes.

Hosted as individual events before that evening’s already schedule show, Umphrey’s Stew Art Series is a crowd-sourced improvisation experiment, in which all the music performed by the group on stage will be entirely directed by S2 audience members. Tickets for each event sell out in just minutes.

For S2, fans submit their ideas by texting descriptive words, phrases, and pop culture references (pretty much whatever came to mind), to the Umphrey's Mozes mobile interface. The suggestions are then filtered by the band’s long time Sound Caresser Kevin Browning and projected on a screen for the band to digest and turn into the next phase of the jam. The band’s music varies stylistically with suggestions ranging from “an afternoon bus ride in Jamaica” to “drinking pina coladas…in a hurricane”. As one elated fan commented after a show, “S2 was the coolest thing I have ever been a part of. It’s always been a dream of mine to meet the band, and the opportunity to participate in leading the Jam for the band was a dream come true as well.”

Umphrey’s McGee will release a collection of new this fall. In a departure from the standard "album" format, Umphrey’s will instead offer up the highly anticipated new material via a series of digital EPs. To get fans warmed-up, Umphrey’s is offering a free MP3 download of the band’s brand new, yet-to-see-the-light-of-day song “Wellwishers.” Folks can download it here, and while there can snatch up the Wellwishers widget to easily share it with their friends.

Visit www.umphreys.com for news of the bite sized music portions from the band’s perspective, and look for full details regarding the releases to be announced in the coming weeks.

Denver-Based Guitarist Grant Gordy To Release Debut Album May 11

Grant Gordy, the Denver-based guitar player whose lifelong study of music, from Bill Evans to The Beatles and beyond, has informed his own writing and arranging, will release his self-titled debut album on May 11.

“[He] belongs to the new elite family of American acoustic practitioners who are pushing the ever-expanding envelope of a musical frontier … Bluegrass, newgrass, jazz, classical and even ‘dawg’ are all audible influences in Grant’s musical vision,” says David “Dawg” Grisman, whose David Grisman Quintet Gordy subbed in and would ultimately join as guitarist. “[His] guitar stylings offer a rare blend of flat-picking virtuosity, jazz exploration and classical sensibility …”

“Pterodactyl,” “Grapes” and “Lila” are just three of the compositions on the new CD, which also includes Gordy’s “Blues to Dawg” that he invited Grisman to contribute his signature mandolin playing to. Each song in the collection exemplifies Gordy’s spirit of adventure and sense of self.

Gordy describes himself: “At heart, I'm really an improviser; that's what very first drew me to playing music — the idea that you can make things up as you go along — but I'm also very interested in composition. I like the idea of a group of musicians having as much room and freedom to explore and improvise as they want, but within a context of a compelling arrangement that can be exciting for, and draws in, the listener.”

Gordy’s touring behind the release include:

Friday, June 11, KRFC Radio-Fort Collins, “Live at Lunch” show
Saturday, June 12, Brewgrass Festival, South Pearl Street, Denver
Saturday, June 12, Little Church in the Pines, 536 Gold Run Road, Salina
Wednesday, June 16, Dazzle Jazz Club, 930 Lincoln St., Denver
Thursday, June 17, Bongo Billy’s Cafe, 300 W. Sackett Ave., Salida
Wednesday, June 23, Club Passim, 47 Palmer St., Cambridge, Mass.
Thursday, June 24, Caffe Vivaldi, 32 Jones St., New York City

Umphrey's McGee Announces Full Summer Schedule

On the heels of big plays in Amsterdam and Australia, and still buzzing from the ground-breaking first annual UMBowl in Chicago, pop prog rockers Umphrey's McGee today unveil their complete summer 2010 tour schedule.

The band’s summer plans include stops at festivals throughout the country: Bonnaroo, Summer Camp, Wakarusa, Summerfest, and All Good, among others. Additional tour highlights include a highly anticipated Colorado visit - for a July 3 “Red Rocks & Blue” show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre with Galactic (w/ Cyril Neville) and The Wailers and an intimate play on the 4th of July at the Gothic Theatre, and an opening stint for Widespread Panic on July 13 at LC Outdoor Amphitheater in Columbus, OH. Umphrey’s McGee’s complete summer tour schedule is included below.

The always forward-thinking Umphrey’s McGee recently carved out new terrain in musical interactivity with fans, when they hosted the first annual “UMBowl” - an unprecedented 4-quarter evening-long concert at Lincoln Hall in the group’s hometown of Chicago. For the April 24th event, fans determined the show’s entire set list via real time text messaging and pre-show balloting. Complete with (quite funny) ESPN style videos in between quarters, UMBowl football jersey-styled t-shirts, and “overtime”, the venue roared with the energy of an NFL Playoff game. Each quarter offered a unique approach to fan interaction – such as an acoustic “1st quarter” with songs determined by pre-show balloting, and a wholly improvised 2nd quarter performance driven by real time texting from the fans to the soundboard, where it was reviewed and delivered to the band (and the crowd) by “offensive coordinator/sound caresser” Kevin Browning. A Blogritics.org review hailed UMBowl as “…challenging, fan-centric and courageous.”

Umphrey’s McGee also recently released their song "1348" on the Rock Band Network. This marks the first time Umphrey’s McGee’s music has been part of any video game, and the progressive-rock influenced music proves to be a great fit. For “1348” Umphrey’s McGee worked with former Harmonix Music Systems employee and current Rock Band Network freelancer Andrew Buch. In addition to “1348”, Buch is helping to prepare several Umphrey’s McGee songs for the program that will be made available soon.

Umphrey’s McGee’s complete list of summer tour dates is as follows:

Friday, May 28 - Sunday, May 30 Summercamp Chillicothe IL
Wednesday, June 2 House of Blues New Orleans LA w/ Brock Butler
Thursday, June 3 House of Blues Dallas TX w/ Brock Butler
Friday, June 4 - Saturday, June 5 Wakarusa Festival Ozark AR
