Otis Taylor's Trance Jam Blues Festival | Nov 2011

The first annual Otis Taylor Trance Blues Jam Festival is a weekend of public workshops and jams for musicians and fans of all levels and ages who wish to join world-renowned guitarist Bob “Steady Rollin’” Margolin, Tony Trischka (International Bluegrass Music Association Banjo Player of the Year), multi-instrumentalist Don Vappie, bassist George Porter, Jr. (Meters), guitarist/vocalist Standing Bear, Cassie Taylor and renaissance bluesman Otis Taylor.

The event, held Friday-Sunday, November 25-27, begins with a pre-Trance Jam hosted by Taylor, Margolin and Vappie at the Boulder Outlook Hotel on Friday at 8 p.m.

“You don’t have to be a musician to get involved with the Trance Blues Jam Festival,” says Taylor, a Boulder resident and festival founder. “We would like to see the festival evolve to include artists hosting sessions slanted towards many different styles of music. The more types of participants we have, the better,” Taylor says. “The goal is to fill the hills with the sound of music of all genres: classical, blues, jazz, pop, world, rap, spoken word; [and] instruments of every type: horns, strings, percussion and even street instruments like cans and buckets.”

Taylor’s compelling style of path-forging and “trance-blues” sonic landscapes has won praise from The New York Times and NPR.  While drawing upon elements of early American blues and even earlier African music, Taylor has been called “arguably the most relevant blues artist of our time” by Guitar Player magazine.
Taylor and the visiting artists will lead weekend workshops both Saturday and Sunday, ranging in size from 40 to 60 students. Saturday’s Boulder Theater workshop culminates with the Saturday Night Trance-Blues Jam, an open-to-the-public audience-participation jam session with hundreds of musicians, steered by Otis Taylor beginning at 6 p.m.  A special concert will follow on Saturday night at 9p.m. at the Boulder Theater. Video of a similar workshop held last year can be found at otistaylor.com
Sunday’s Trance Blues workshops at the Boulder Outlook Hotel go from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Sunday workshops are geared towards younger performers and will conclude with a Family Jam in the afternoon. The first annual Otis Taylor’s Trance Blues Jam Festival is presented and sponsored by the Boulder Outlook Hotels & Suites, Goodbye Blue Monday, Mountain Ocean, Boulder Valley Velodrome, Cronin Jewelers and the Boulder Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Workshop and VIP Jam tickets are available by calling the Boulder Outlook Hotel at 303.443.3322. Saturday night only Jam tickets are available by calling the Boulder Theater box office at (303) 786-7030.
Tickets range from $15 for Friday’s event to $80 for full-day Saturday pass. Please visit event website for complete information.

Unicorns, Junior Wookies, and Five Tie-Dyed Knights in Shining Armor: Floyd Fest 2011

There are a number of outdoor festival sites in the US that have that extra special 'something' that makes people come back year after year.  Florida has Spirit of the Suwanee Park, for example.  What usually sets a festival location apart, for me at least -- is a mix of breathtaking natural beauty, and of course -- the music.. But for me to come back year after year, it's gotta have a little something on top of that.. Something that's a little different.. Perhaps a bit comically-odd, at times. Something one can't quite verbalize.

iClips and GenAudio Team Up For Enhanced Widespread Panic Webstream This Weekend

iClips, the leading provider of live concert event broadcasting, and GenAudio Inc., developer of AstoundSound 3D spatial audio software, announce their relationship to enhance iClips webcast audio content. The Widespread Panic live concert event webcast, June 24 – 26 at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, will be presented in AstoundSound.

The AstoundSound special software implementation for live events, called AstoundLive®, enables processing and mixing of any audio output that is split-off from the front of house and fed as multiple mono and stereo inputs. The final “astounded” audio is then synchronized with the video recording in real-time. This enables music lovers to enjoy a 3D audio listening experience during the webcast. No special hardware is required to enjoy this unique 3D spatial audio experience. Any two speakers or headphones will enable webcast viewers to enjoy the “Astounded” stereo mix in real-time as the live event is being broadcast.

Although not necessary, GenAudio recommends for optimal 3D audio listening pleasure of the astounded Widespread Panic webcast, using a good set of headphones or external computer speakers. You can access the webcast at www.iclips.net. “We are excited to be utilizing this audio technology," said Nate Parienti, Founder and CEO, iClips. “After a successful test drive of the AstoundSound technology during our stream of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in conjunction with AEG Network Live, we realized that we wanted to utilize AstoundSound in our other webcasts as well; it’s a real game changer in audio for live event broadcasting.”

AstoundSound processing enables fans to listen more critically to the music with unsurpassable intelligibility. It significantly enhances the artist-fan connection by elevating the auditory senses to a new level of listening pleasure. The AstoundLive® software uses unique digital audio filters based on actual human brain response measurements. The processed 3D audio remains in-phase, center channel imaging is not affected, and the resulting processed audio has no tone colorization. These characteristics are unique to the AstoundSound technology.

“We see our new relationship with iClips as the key for bringing AstoundSound into the live event space thanks to the introduction from John Rubey, President of AEG Network Live,” said Jerry Mahabub, Founder, Chairman and CEO, GenAudio. “Widespread Panic fans viewing the webcast will be able to hear the event as if they are at the concert venue, thanks to our ‘Astounding’ 3D audio processing.”

For additional information about the Widespread Panic webcast please visit www.iclips.net.

Avett Brothers July 9 Concert from Red Rocks to be Simulcast Live

The Avett Brothers sold-out show on July 9th from Colorado’s famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre will be broadcast live via satellite to the band’s hometown of Concord, NC on the planets largest HDTV screen.  AEG Network LIVE is responsible for producing and shooting the entire event in HD and delivering it via iClips to Charlotte Motor Speedway. Charlotte Motor Speedway, home to the massive 80’ x 200’ Panasonic HDTV, will host Avett Brothers fans from near and far for a chance to be part of this exciting show as it happens live. Fans who can't make it to Colorado or North Carolina on July 9 will be able stream the show on iclips.net.

The live simulcast will give the Avett Brothers’ rabid local fan base the opportunity to view their historical show from Red Rocks on the speedway’s massive 80-foot-by-200-foot HD video board. The speedway will supply concert-grade speakers to turn the infield area in front of the video board into a one-of-a-kind concert venue.  Tickets for the July 9 simulcast on the world’s largest HDTV at Charlotte Motor Speedway are on sale now and can be purchased at the speedway ticket office or by calling 1-800-455-FANS (3267). Tickets are only $10 until July 1, when they will increase to $15 until July 8. Tickets purchased the day of the event, July 9, will cost $20.

“The speedway has been a hometown landmark for us our whole lives and we're proud to have an opportunity for our music to echo through that historical infield,” said Seth Avett. “For us, performing at Red Rocks and airing live in Concord is about the most ideal situation for being in two amazing places at once.”

The Avett Brothers front men, Scott and Seth Avett, who grew up on their father’s farm in Concord, quickly grew their fan base throughout the region with memorable energetic shows, which has become the band’s trademark.

The Avetts’ popularity skyrocketed on the heels on their major label debut, the 2009 album “I and Love and You.” Recently, the band has become accustomed to performing sold out concerts and in February they performed at the 53rd Grammy Awards in Los Angeles alongside Bob Dylan.

“We are so fortunate to travel and play the many places we do,” said Scott Avett. “To have an opportunity to share that with our supportive home town in a setting where great men like Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt and David Pearson competed adds to the sense of pride that we feel to be a part of the Charlotte community and this event at Charlotte Motor Speedway.”

“This is going to be an unbelievable event,” said Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway. “This is something that would have never been possible without the world’s largest HD video board. But, now we’re going to simulcast a live sold out show from one of the most famous concert venues in the world, featuring our home-town boys, the Avett Brothers, to their loyal fan following here in Charlotte. It’s going to be awesome!”

TUPAC AMARU SHAKUR FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES “2PAC 40TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION”

Afeni Shakur and the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation announce details for the 2PAC 40th Birthday Celebration Concert, at the Atlanta Symphony Hall in Atlanta, GA, June 16, 2011. Hosted by comedian/actor Mike Epps, this star-studded event will feature a headlining appearance by GRAMMY® award-winning artist Erykah Badu, as well as performances by legendary soul artists Roy Ayers and Eric Roberson, and hip-hop heavyweights Too $hort, Bun B, and 8 Ball and MJG. Proceeds from the event benefit the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation.

“I am deeply honored to have been invited by Afeni Shakur to celebrate her son’s remarkable life,” says Badu. “I don’t take this distinction for granted.”

Since 2009, presenters, Mike Epps and Afeni Shakur have drawn thousands of 2Pac fans from around the globe to Atlanta for an annual day of music, art and culture in recognition of the icon’s lasting impact and influence. The event aims to not only revive Tupac’s spirit through art, but offer a prophetic representation of the late artist at age 40 – complete  with a musical soundtrack that spans the soulful jazz sounds of Roy Ayers and to West Coast rap contemporaries such as Too $hort.

“With this event, we help keep Tupac’s legacy alive,” says Epps, “not only by bringing together the fans that know and love his music, but also by supporting his organization, and the causes he worked so hard for during his lifetime.”

Past celebrations have included performances by Rick Ross, Wacka Flocka, Lil’ Scrappy, M1 of Dead Prez and more. At last year’s concert, Dekalb County officials presented Afeni Shakur and Mike Epps with a proclamation officially naming June 16th as “Tupac Day.”

This June 16 will mark the 40th birthday of Tupac Shakur, a man whose impact on culture worldwide through his art, activism and passion is felt to this day. This year, fans, family, artists and performers alike will gather at the Atlanta Symphony Hall to both celebrate the life and further the cause of this remarkable individual.

Tickets are priced at $45-150.00, and are available exclusively at www.16thofjune.com.
