This Colorado native has been fully immersed into the dance music scene for over 12 years with his passion later blossoming into DJing and producing. Over the years Jantsen has established a strong presence in the scene through his eclectic sound, being influenced by many genres such as jazz, blues, funk, rock, hip hop, and many other kinds of world music he brings a style that is creative, unique, and is continuously evolving. Devin Martin and his hometown of Orlando's weather have one thing in common right now: They're on fire. His unique mix of electro-house and dubstep has recently culminated in 3 tracks in the Beatport top 100. In addition, this is Devin Martin's debut Colorado performance, so he's definitely got some surprises in store.

2011 MassJazz Schedule Announced

MassJazz has released its annual schedule of jazz and blues festivals and outdoor concerts taking place in Massachusetts this summer and fall. The schedule includes a dozen outdoor jazz festivals across the Commonwealth, plus hundreds of outdoor concerts taking place in city parks and town squares, at museums and cultural venues, and at tourist spots around the state.

“Massachusetts has a lot to offer visitors, from our champion sports teams and our rich history to the stunning landscapes and abundance of cultural riches,” said Betsy Wall, executive director of the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism.  “It’s all here and the vibrant music scene – especially jazz and blues - is another great reason to spend time in the Commonwealth this summer. ”

The Massachusetts festival season kicks off with the Hoop City Jazz & Art Festival in Springfield on July 8-10 and ends with the Pittsfield Jazz Festival in western Massachusetts on October 7-20.  Wall pointed to the strong jazz presence across Massachusetts, with festivals or concerts taking place in every region of the state.

“For tourists who savor jazz and blues – two of America’s greatest art forms – Massachusetts has a terrific slate of festivals and outdoor events this season,” said MassJazz founder Michael P. Quinlin.  “And add to that the jazz clubs, campus events, and live jazz brunches at hotels and restaurants, and you have a music lover’s paradise.”

In July, MassJazz is issuing its 3rd annual MassJazz Travel Guide, a free 40-page magazine with jazz profiles, stories and listings on the state's vibrant jazz scene.  The Guide is available at jazz venues, tourism kiosks, and cultural sports around Massachusetts.

Sarabeth Tucek Streams New Album On AOL

Sarabeth Tucek is set to release her sophomore LP, Get Well Soon, on May 24th on Ungawa Records. It’s a stunning record that, although not a concept album as such, forms a narrative based around the death of Sarabeth’s father, or as she beautifully describes it “an impressionistic rendering of a time ruled by grief”. The 12 tracks were “sequenced and resequenced for weeks” in order for the story to emerge and the end result sees not one wasted word or unnecessary note; all we’re left with is “just pure feeling”.
Sarabeth was born to a psychiatrist and a psychologist in Miami, but grew up in New York. She was a latecomer to music, her first calling being acting. However, after a few years in Hollywood, her singing and songwriting was encouraged by people on the music scene she fell in with. She first made an impression singing backing vocals on Smog’s 2003 album Supper and then in the film ‘Dig!’, where she sings a song she had just written called "Something For You". The Brian Jonestown Massacre went on to cover the song (retitled "Seer"), but Sarabeth’s own version became her debut single, on Sonic Cathedral, back in February 2007.
This stark and simple song won her legions of fans and her self-titled debut album followed a few months later (on the Echo label) to rapturous reviews. Produced by Ethan Johns and Luther Russell, its understated style was an inspiration to a number of singer-songwriters who followed in Sarabeth’s wake, including Laura Marling, who approached Johns to produce I Speak Because I Can after hearing it.
However, despite everything seemingly going so right, at home everything was going wrong. “Some very bad things happened during the first record and after,” recalls Sarabeth. “It was as if all that had ever troubled me, hurt me, came back just as I was embarking on what should’ve been the happiest time of my life. It all came back and said, ‘Not so fast...’
“I don’t think my mind could handle all the good coming its way. It was unfamiliar terrain and I didn’t know how to traverse It. Predictably, my drinking got out of control and that led to a couple car accidents, jail and legal troubles.I wanted to leave LA anyway, but now I felt I sort of had to. I hoped that by coming back home to New York I would be able to forge some kind of redemptive break from the past. To forgive myself.”
The move has informed much of the music on Get Well Soon. The warmth of the West Coast has gone, replaced by a much rawer sound, all recorded over an intensive 15-day period in a basement in Southampton, Pennsylvania. “We recorded this record in a house where we also lived,” Sarabeth explains. “My friends Robert and Peter from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club recorded ‘Howl’ there. It’s owned by the Nicgorski family who are all very musical: Billy, who offered me the basement, and his brother have played in lots of bands, their sister Maria sings on ‘State I Am In’ and their father Wally spent his mornings on the front porch singing in his rocking chair. Making a record where I am singing to and about my father and seeing and hearing their dad out there every morning served up a pretty strong and bittersweet feeling for me.”
“I think we managed to capture a unique mood down in that basement,” adds producer Luther Russell. “As guests in someone’s home we got a feeling that might not have happened in a regular studio. Sarabeth wanted to be somewhere totally unfamiliar; the material was incredibly personal to her, so she had to feel right about where she did it. My job was to capture that feeling, and fast. The plan was to mix it in LA, but it turned out that all the magic was there in the rough mixes I did as we went along – so that is what you hear. I think that’s why it’s such an immediate record, because it really was completed in those two weeks... but with a lifetime of preparation, of course.”
The rawness of the recording reflects the subject matter and provides the perfect accompaniment to Sarabeth’s voice, which seems stronger, more confident and more crystalline than ever, like Karen Dalton or a less histrionic Cat Power, as she deftly conveys her grief with an eloquent, understated majesty. The musical reference points of the first album – Neil Young, Dylan, The Velvet Underground, Big Star – are still there, but somehow amplified, and Sarabeth is definitely not looking towards the current music scene for inspiration. “It’s odd how placid a lot of music seems now; so washed out in sound and feeling,” she says. “It’s like antidepressant music to take antidepressants to. I don’t really give a shit. I am more likely to buy a new book now than a new record.”
This would explain the number of literary references on Get Well Soon. The opening track "The Wound And The Bow" is named after a book of essays by Edmund Wilson, in which Sarabeth discovered and subsequently became obsessed with the myth of Philoctetes, a play by Sophocles in which the protagonist suffers a wound so grotesque that he is left alone on an island to live in a cave and tend to his injuries. The title of "Exit Ghost" was taken from the Philip Roth novel, but he appropriated it from ‘Hamlet’, where it is written as a stage direction. “The scene when Hamlet sees his father’s ghost became lodged in my head,” explains Sarabeth. “And his subsequent madness I understood in a more personal way.”
The narrative ends with the title track and a resolution of sorts. “I feel like I’m either the patient or the doctor, somebody always has an ache,” she says. “When I wrote the title track I had a friend of mine on my mind. She was so sad... just inconsolable and it was painful to see her like that. The title is a reminder to keep myself well. It’s hard to explain the ferocity of the grief I experienced when my father died. I really felt like it was going to kill me, so to be here... well, I just wanted to remind myself of what I survived.”

Leftover Salmon Announces 2011 River Run

Summer is in the air, and with that Leftover Salmon is pleased to announce three special shows at some of the most cherished and unique venues Colorado has to offer. On June 10th & 11th, Leftover Salmon performs a two night run in the Poudre Canyon at the newly owned and operated Mishawaka Amphitheatre in Bellvue, CO.

On June 12th the festivities travel to the new State Bridge Amphitheatre in Bond, CO to honor & revisit a celebrated tradition. This intimate venue on the Colorado River holds a considerable amount of history in the Colorado music scene and was the site of many memorable LOS shows in the group’s early years. A devastating fire took the property in 2007, but the revered venue will return this summer. Leftover Salmon is honored to be performing the Grand Re-Opening Party at The New State Bridge Amphitheatre.

Fan ticketing on sale date for all shows is Saturday April 2nd.  Public on sale for State Bridge is Monday April 4th and Mishawaka Amphitheatre is Wednesday April 13th.

BB King at the 10th edition of Gent Jazz Festival

BB King is the first name to be announced for Gent Jazz Festival’s anniversary. More names will be announced within the following months.  BB King will headline the Belgian festival during one of the special nights. On Saturday July 9 the Blues legend is coming back to Europe for a farewell tour and will perform exclusively for Belgium at Gent Jazz Festival (07-07-17.07.11). Steven De Bruyn, Tony Gyselinck & Roland will open the special night with the project with which they released the album Fortune Cookie last year. Info artists see enclosed.

Beats Antique at the Boulder Theater

Growing like wildfire under the canopy of live electonica and world roots music comes a masterful merge of modern technology, live instrumentation and seductive performance, built of brass bands and glitch, string quartets and dubstep: the musical trio Beats Antique.

Since the group’s inception from the eclectic underground of San Francisco’s performance art scene, Beats Antique has been notorious for making it nearly impossible to sit still. They meld their mediums as attentively as they fuse the cultures that inspire their sound. All self produced and composed, the trio creates a unique collage: an animalistic, raw musical event that blurs the lines between the provocative, the spiritual, and the artistic, while still maintaining an allegiance to the muses of class and beauty.

The journey that led to Beats Antique today was a winding and twisted path from the west coast to the ancient trade routes of the silk  road. In this modern incarnation, the musical alliance of producers David Satori and Tommy Cappel is inspired and emphasized by their collaborative partnership with world-renowned belly dance performer and music producer Zoe Jakes.


David Satori and Tommy Cappel both trained classically before venturing to locations such as Bali, West Africa, Serbia and beyond. With extensive backgrounds in multicultural music production, and the passports to prove it, Satori and Cappel command the spectrum of live and digital instrumentation, born from Hip Hop and old school jazz.


Zoe Jakes adds a third dimension as the multi –cultural and –disciplinary dance counterpart to Beats Antique’s sound. Jakes has worked with 2  major dance troupes, Miles Copeland’s Bellydance Superstars and Rachel Brice’s Indigo Belly Dance Company, a student of ballet and contemporary techniques. Jake’s additional history with Cappel in the Extra Action Marching Band and the Yard Dogs Road Show grants some insight into the caliber of performance that is Beats Antique’s standard.

All of this sets the scene for Beats Antique’s overtly ambitious stage show, a sensory overload conquest of the festival circuit’s most riotous events, such as Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits festival, and Outside Lands, as well as a catalog of proper tours that include Bassnectar and a recent run with Les Claypool of PRIMUS in early 2010. According to Satori, the trio is excited by their ability to create a huge sound from their relatively small setup. “It gives us this whole new world of musical opportunities that we’re just starting to scratch the surface of.”

In a prolific 3 years since Beats Antique emerged, the group has released 2 albums and a pair of EPs, with a third album, Blind Threshold, on the way. Notable features of the new release include vaporous violins and Danny Elfman-esque dementia; glitchy, laser-guided harmonica provided by Blues Traveler frontman John Popper; and 2 very different vocal tracks that range between restless pop hooks and vibrant Eastern European dance loops. All wrapped into an intricate collection of heavy beats and sub bass.

Beats Antique is best imagined as an innovative creature built from the cumulative heritage of the world’s music chasing its tail. However vivid that image, when a marching band groove crashes into bluesy folk chords only to be accompanied by electronic beats and Middle Eastern melodies, you’ll still be surprised.

Omara Portuondo - of Buena Vista Social Club- 80th Birthday Celebration @ Boulder Theater

Omara Portuondo, the world-renowned vocalist who began her career in the music scene of her native Cuba in the 1940s, will celebrate her 80th Birthday with performances in the U.S. this fall. Portuondo on the heels of a GRAMMY win for her 2008 release Gracias will entertain audiences with her rich, soulful brand of jazz and balladry. Portuondo, is an original member of the internationally critically acclaimed Buena Vista Social Club a group whose roots date back to the Cuban club scene of the 1940s before it took the world by storm in the late 90s. She was the first Cuban artist in six years to be granted a visa to perform in the United States and the first Cuban citizen to appear on television as a presenter at The Latin Grammy Awards.

Jose Marte, our great Cuban poet, once said that music is the soul of the people, says Omara. "Music is at the heart of every culture, something to be shared among all people, regardless of borders and politics. It has always been a universal language for people who might not otherwise understand each other. Perhaps, through these performances, I could be a goodwill ambassador between these two countries."

2010 ACFNY FALL JAZZ FESTIVAL

During the week of October 19 – 23 a new generation of Austrian jazz musicians will hit the New York scene. For this year’s installment of the annual series, the Austrian Cultural Forum has found a new partner in Dizzy’s Coca Cola Club. The Festival will showcase Austria’s foremost young artists on five consecutive nights, and tap into a unique blend of Austrian and American creativity. This year’s Festival kicks off on Tuesday, October 19th at the Austrian Cultural Forum: one of Austria’s leading jazz musicians, Wolfgang Puschnig will perform with his American musical partner and free funk bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma. Martin Reiter will also present his new solo program. Join us for some late night jazz sessions at exclusive Jazz Club Dizzy’s where Christian Maurer’s band Mausi will appear together with Jack Walrath and versatile alto voice Ali Gaggl on Wednesday, October 20th. On Thursday October 21st, the program at Dizzy’s continues with young jazz singer Simone Kopmajer, who will perform with talented young musicians from New York. The Austrian-born drummer Gernot Bernroider and his band Oulipians will appear together with the extraordinary vocalist Chanda Rule on Friday the 22nd. The series will conclude with Franz Hackl and his Acoustic Band on Saturday, October 23rd, featuring Kenny Davis and special guest Randy Brecker.

Members of Austria’s hip young jazz scene move freely and fluidly among the multifaceted styles in the world of jazz, always intent on finding and refining their own modes of expression. There is no other city in Europe where opportunities for musicians to mingle with each other are as diverse and spontaneous as in Vienna. The spirit of openness is part of Austria's musical heritage, as is a joy of connecting with musicians from other countries.

Magnolia Row played to a sardine can crowd for Fat Tuesday at the West End Tavern in Boulder on 2/16/2010.  I have heard a Yonder Mountain String Band bootleg where in the middle of “My Darling One” he proclaims to the crowd how kewl they all are.
