Crowded House To Release "Intriguer"

Following up on their 2007 release, Time On Earth – their first studio recording in fourteen years – New Zealand dream-pop auteurs Crowded House deliver Intriguer, scheduled for release on July 13th, 2010, on Fantasy Records, a division of Concord Music Group. The internationally acclaimed group begins a nationwide tour of the U.S. and Canada in support of the new album on Monday, July 12th. Also available that day will be the 2-disc Intriguer Deluxe Edition, featuring a special bonus live DVD.
Produced by Jim Scott (Wilco), Intriguer once again brings together singer/guitarist and chief songwriter Neil Finn with original Crowded House bassist Nick Seymour and keyboardist/guitarist Mark Hart, who’d been with the band from 1989 until its last days. Also on board is drummer Mark Sherrod, the relative newcomer to the family, having joined the band for the making of the aforementioned Time On Earth. Recorded at Roundhead Studios in Auckland, New Zealand, in the spring and summer of 2009, the album includes songs that “have been worked over on the road and transformed a few times, some all the way back to square one,” says Finn. “It’s a good place to return to from time to time.” Intriguer opens with “Saturday Sun,” a track whose straightforward backbeat calls to mind the best elements of ‘60s pop. The follow-up track, “Archer’s Arrows,” takes a more ominous turn with the help of some carefully layered vocals and the violin work of Lisa Germano (who later reappears on the pensive “Even If”).
“Falling Dove” is both melancholy and defiant, while “Isolation” derives its dreamlike sensibility from a heavy dose of guitar tremolo and the dreamlike vocals of Finn’s wife, Sharon Dawn Johnson. Both of these tracks, positioned back-to-back in the sequence, benefit from the psychedelic guitar work of Liam Finn, Neil’s son and longtime collaborator in the studio and onstage.
“Twice If You’re Lucky” is a prime example of the aforementioned evolutionary process that left its mark on most of the songs on Intriguer. “We played an alternative version, more complex and mysterious on tour, then deconstructed back to the original, simple form in the last week of recording,” Finn explains. “I am inclined to circle songs, looking for any bit of advantage I can find – a verse, a chord or a word to change.”
“Elephants” is the wistful closer, driven by lush piano harmonies that seek to linger a while and take in the fleeting moment before the story comes to close. “Intriguer is exotic in parts, traditional in origin,” says Finn. “Through many a twist and turn we fashioned some drama and intrigue. You will find some threads that go back through all that history and some new discoveries as well that will need to be followed up. Its part of the continuum and it may just be the best thing we’ve done…until the next one.”
2007’s Time On Earth, turned the band on to what Finn calls “the scent of something new.” Thankfully, for the rest of us, Intriguer proves the Crowded House story in many ways, is just beginning.

Adam Green: Debut Art Exhibition 'Teen Tech' At New York's Morrison Hotel

Folk-rock troubadour Adam Green's debut art show, Teen Tech, will open at the Morrison Hotel Gallery Bowery (313 Bowery, former home to the famed CBGB's gallery) in his hometown of New York, NY, on April 22nd. Following a private opening night party, the exhibition will be available to the public April 23rd and 24th. Teen Tech showcases another artistic side of singer/songwriter Green, already known for his prolific (six albums in eight years) career as a solo musician and for his work as half of the band Moldy Peaches. Last year, he composed the soundtrack for a German theatrical adaptation of Paul Auster's novel Timbuktu, which he titled Musik For A Play. Fat Possum Records released Green's most recent solo album, Minor Love, in February.

The exhibition will consist of original works by Green: 12 sculptures of plaster, papier-mâché, or papier-mâché and mixed materials; 18 large-scale (30" x 40") acrylic or watercolor paintings; 19 drawings; and 20 collages (created together with model Cory Kennedy). The art will be for sale and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the charitable organization Artists for Peace and Justice, which directs 100% of all funds raised towards rebuilding and maintaining long-term sustainability in Haiti. Friend and peer Binki Shapiro of Little Joy introduced Green to the organization when he donated a hand-designed t-shirt for her recent, highly successful Crafts For A Cause online auction that donated all proceeds to Artists for Peace and Justice. Green and Shapiro decided to work together again here in an effort to continue giving. Following the show's close, any remaining pieces will be available here.

Green says of the exhibition, "Teen Tech is an art show I've prepared over the last year and a half. Perhaps because I'm an entertainer in showbiz, I found myself trying to make this art show more entertaining than average. It focuses on cartoon subjects. I don't often read comics but I've always liked to draw cartoons. I contend that all artists work in caricature. The pieces in Teen Tech are caricatures of cartoons, which I feel distill the subjects down to their bare essence."

Teen Tech coincides with Green's two-night, hometown headlining stand at the Bowery Ballroom. These two gigs, April 23rd and 24th, will be the final of his current U.S. tour in support of Minor Love. The album has earned Green plenty of praise, with BlackBook writing, "...the real genius of Minor Love isn't the album's embrace of disparate genres (although that's impressive, too), it's how charming and easy Green makes all this variety sound" and Filter adding, "...Green revels in a stripped-down, bittersweet world where nothing lasts forever, with both his baritone and lyrics adding freshness to his fatalist outlook." Adam Green: Minor Love In Stores Today

Adam Green's new album Minor Love hits stores today on Fat Possum Records. The album shows a more serious, tender side of the uniquely charming, accomplished Green, who Time Out New York's The Volume blog recently declared, "...ranks among the city's strangest and most engaging young songwriters...he has created a body of work that's deceivingly smart...". Minor Love, his sixth solo venture since the Moldy Peaches went on hiatus in 2002, is a very personal, '70s-influenced folk-rock album and Green's best work to date: in a four-star review, Q Magazine wrote, "...Minor Love is charming; regularly recalling, on tracks such as Castles And Tassels, the barbed-yet-playful love songs Lou Reed used to pen."

Today AOL Music's Spinner blog premiered Green's video for Minor Love's first single "What Makes Him Act So Bad." The Todd Smolar-directed video, shot in New York City's famed Chelsea Hotel and featuring model/DJ Harley Viera-Newton, can be seen here, while the song can be downloaded here. Spinner is also featuring a full album stream for the week here. Earlier this month, RCRD LBL premiered album track "Castles and Tassels" as their 'MySpace Music RCRD of the Day;' the track can now be downloaded here.

Green will embark on a three and a half week headlining tour beginning April 1st at Venue in Vancouver, BC, and wrapping up April 23rd and 24th with a two-night hometown stand at the Bowery Ballroom in New York, NY. Last month, he spent ten days on the road in support of The Cribs before traveling overseas, where he is currently on a headlining tour in Europe.

Green will also perform at SXSW in March. Full itinerary is below.

Bob Gruen's Back On The Bowery with 'Rockers'

photo by Bob Gruen- for the Grateful Web

The Morrison Hotel Gallery, the world's leading purveyor of fine art music photography, is proud to present 'Rockers,' the largest-ever installation by one of the most respected photographers in rock & roll, Bob Gruen.  Totaling some 280 photographs, many of them never before exhibited in the U.S. - from John Lennon to John Lydon, Bob Dylan to Bob Marley - 'Rockers' opens April 24 at the Morrison's new 313 Bowery space, former home to CBGB's Gallery.

'Rockers' was originally presented in 2007 at the FAAP University Museum in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where it drew over 40,000 visitors.  The Morrison has commissioned acclaimed architect Tito Ficarelli, who designed the 'Rockers' exhibit in Brazil, to transform the new 313 Bowery space as well.

Bob Gruen's work has shaped the iconography of rock & roll.  A native New Yorker, he served as John Lennon and Yoko Ono's personal photographer in the 1970s, a position that would yield two of his best known, and best loved, images - of John Lennon wearing a New York City t-shirt, and flashing apeace sign while standing in front of the Statue of Liberty.  During that time Gruen was also chief photographer for Rock Scene Magazine, where he specialized in candid, behind the scenes photo features. He toured extensively with emerging punk and new wave bands including The New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones, Patti Smith Group and Blondie, while also photographing the biggest artists of the era, including Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, KISS, Elton John and Alice Cooper.  Gruen still carries a camera wherever he goes, and continues to add to a body of work that spans over forty years.
