Moogfest 2011 Announces Brian Eno Projects

Moogfest 2011 is honored to announce the exhibition of Brian Eno’s remarkable 77 Million Paintings as a part of this year’s continually expanding palette of festival offerings. This exhibition will mark the first installation of 77 Million Paintings in the United States, outside of San Francisco and Los Angeles. Previous 77 Million Paintings exhibitions throughout the world have included installations at the Venice Biennale, the Milan Triennale, and the Sydney Opera House.

Conceived by Eno as “visual music,” 77 Million Paintings is a constantly evolving sound and image-scape born from his exploration of light as an artistic medium and his interest in the aesthetic possibilities of generative software. Presented on a uniquely configured constellation of video monitors, 77 Million Paintings is a serene and beautiful work, slowly evolving and transforming in time such that no two instants are quite the same. It is art that encourages the viewer to slow down and enter a contemplative state, reflecting on the uniqueness of a passing moment that has almost certainly never existed before.

77 Million Paintings will be exhibited at the YMI Cultural Center, a National Historic Landmark in the heart of downtown Asheville. The YMI Cultural Center’s auditorium will be transformed for 77 Million Paintings, creating a thoroughly immesive experience for those attending the exhibition. Opening on October 28, the first day of Moogfest 2011, the exhibition will continue beyond the festival weekend until the end of November.r

In addition to the 77 Million Paintings installation, Eno will also present one of his legendary and mind-expanding “Illustrated Talks” during the Moogfest 2011 weekend.

Artist, musician, producer, songwriter, and political activist, Brian Eno first came to international prominence in the early 1970s as a founding member of the British band, Roxy Music, bringing a playful, exciting, and innovative approach to electronics and synthesized sound to the group. Many regard his synthesizer solo on the band’s “Editions of You” as one of the visionary, cutting edge uses of the instrument’s true sound generating potential. After leaving the band, Eno went on to create an acclaimed groundbreaking series of recordings during the 1970s, including such classics as Another Green World and Music for Airports, encompassing both exploratory pop and experimental music. During this time, he also became the leading practitioner of “ambient music.” His visionary production work with other artists, including U2, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Devo, and Coldplay has led to some of their most powerful and enduring musical creations.

Though best known for his musical endeavors, Eno’s work in the visual arts actually predates his musical career. In fact, as Eno recounts, had it not been for a chance encounter with Roxy Music’s Andy Mackay in a London Subway, he would “ . . . probably be an art teacher now.” A 1969 graduate of the Winchester School of Arts, Eno’s work with light and video paralleled his musical career in the 1980s and ‘90s, with exhibitions throughout Europe, the United States, and Japan.

Eno’s musical creativity today continues in a particularly fertile new phase. He has recently released two compelling albums on Warp Records. Small Craft on a Milk Sea, released in late 2010, was a collaboration with two young electronic players/composers, Leo Abrahams and Jon Hopkins (who appeared at Moogfest last year). Last month, he released a unique and hypnotic collaboration with poet Rick Holland, Drums Between the Bells, which explores new worlds of musical possibilities in the intersection of the human voice with electronic music.

Both the 77 Million Paintings exhibition, and the “Illustrated Talk,” will be separately ticketed events. During the Moogfest 2011 weekend of October 28 – 30, attendance at the 77 Million Paintings exhibition will be restricted to only Moogfest pass holders. VIP pass holders will be admitted free of charge, while weekend pass holders will be admitted at a specially reduced price. 77 Million Paintings will remain on exhibition in Asheville until the end of the November and will be open to the general public beginning November 2.

Details regarding Eno’s “Illustrated Talk” will be released in the coming weeks. Moogfest VIPs and weekend pass holders will be given first opportunity to purchase tickets to the talk at reduced prices for a limited period of time. Any remaining tickets will be offered to the general public afterwards.

Moogfest 2011 takes place October 28-30 in beautiful Asheville, NC, headquarters of Moog Music, and the adopted home of Bob Moog.

Weekend passes for Moogfest 2011 are on sale now exclusively at moogfest.com.

British Singer-Songwriter Lee MacDougall Set for 2nd U.S. Tour This Year

Capitalizing on the success of his debut tour of the U.S. earlier this year, which included a performance at the SxSW Festival in Austin in March, British singer-songwriter-guitarist Lee MacDougall, returns for his second tour of the U.S. beginning in August. Dubbed the All The Right Places tour, the schedule kicks off in New York City on August 4 and will cover multiple cities over a two-month period.

Since his initial appearances in the U.S., MacDougall has successfully toured in Germany, Austria and Italy as well as playing in his hometown of London, where, in addition to an intimate club date, he opened for headliner Bon Jovi at the massive Hard Rock Calling Festival in London's Hyde Park on June 25th. He will also be supporting Atlantic Records recording artist Rumer on her UK tour in November.

MacDougall has become known for mesmerizing audiences with emotionally-driven melodies and resonating vocals. Louisville's Backseat Sandbar says of MacDougall:  "He has the type of voice that can fill every crevice of a room and every fiber in your body.  Its clear perfection can play your heart strings as easily as his fingers strum his guitar."

Earlier this year, MacDougall released an self-produced 11-song CD called IF WALLS COULD TALK that is available from his website (www.leemacdougallmusic.com) and at his live shows. The CD includes the standout tracks "The Star Hotel," "She" and "Joanna," among others. Additionally, noted producer Jim Lowe (who has worked with the Stereophonics, Taylor Swift and the Charlatans) produced several tracks with him, including the version of "She" that is part of a three-song EP he released via iTunes last year. An acoustic rendition of the song produced by Lee appears on IF WALLS COULD TALK.

With the expansion of his live repertoire, MacDougall is releasing a new self-produced CD (recorded in his bedroom) called FOR A FEW TALES MORE to coincide with the upcoming U.S. dates. This 10-song release includes a number of new songs, among them the affecting "Smile" and "Hindsight," which have become highlights of his live performances.

Originally from the fishing town of Grimsby in the north of England, MacDougall emerged from the open mic night circuit in London that has spawned new acoustic English artists in the last two years. His ability to couple a strong lyrical narrative with a memorable melody has enabled him to establish an international fan base that expanded when his music was embraced by the community of fans of the Twilight films.

But it is the strength of his songwriting that has earned him recognition on both sides of the Atlantic and support slots with artists such as Train, Starsailor, Paolo Nutini, The Feeling, Bob Dylan and Van Morrison. The Independent Music Scene wrote:  "This is an artist that allows his voice to be heard clearly without masking the pure talent of the song. The music is great for having a lonely listen, to a couple's dance, to a drive through the country side with nothing to care about. The songwriting is straight forward without being simplistic."

Following his U.S. tour dates, he will make a return visit to Germany, Austria, Italy and England.  The U.K. leg will include shows supporting Rumer on her multi-city tour.

Girl Talk & Jim Jones Collaborate On "Believe In Magic"

In late February 2011, as Girl Talk was about to head out for his second month of touring in support of All Day, Pitchfork TV brought Girl Talk and Dipset’s Jim Jones together in Jones’ Nomad District Studio in New York for a special edition of their “Selector” series. Together, with Girl Talk producing a beat sampled from Honey Cone’s “Want Ads” and Jones freestyling over it, the two created a new track -- “Believe in Magic.” The results of the “Selector” taping exceeded all expectations and Jones was so pleased he took things one step further and invited R&B vocalist Lloyd to contribute, essentially making “Believe in Magic” the perfect summer jam. Watch “Believe In Magic” being made, and download Jim Jones ft. Lloyd and Girl Talk’s “Believe In Magic” below.

NXNE Announces 2011 Line Up

NORTH BY NORTHEAST (NXNE) announces the second wave of bands for the 17th edition of the festival, taking over Toronto June 13-19, 2011. Tickets are now available online.

NXNE has just confirmed that Devo, Descendents, Stars, The Pharcyde, Men Without Hats, Digable Planets, Twin Shadow, OFF!, Art Brut, Shad, Land of Talk, Chad VanGaalen, and Cults will join a festival line-up that also includes performances by The Dodos, Deerhoof, Hot Water Music, The Bouncing Souls, and Anti-Flag (previously announced), plus Dum Dum Girls, Evan Dando & Juliana Hatfield, Braids, Ty Segall, Suuns, PS I Love You, Crocodiles, Wild Nothing, The Pack A.D., Metz, Dirty Beaches, Forest City Lovers, The Luyas, Lower Dens, Gentlemen Husbands, Rusty, Royal Bangs, Julianna Barwick, No Joy, Prince Rama, Doldrums, Secret Cities, Evening Hymns, Snowblink, Parlovr, Talk Normal, PUJOL, Woodsman, Gauntlet Hair, Joey Cape, Tape Deck Mountain, AIDS Wolf, Houses, CJ Ramone, and Kevin Seconds.

Presented by AOL, New Wave legends Devo headline the summer’s biggest day-and-night party on Saturday, June 18 at Yonge-Dundas Square. Toronto’s Yonge Street will close to traffic and open to a massive crowd of NXNE fans as Devo – complete with signature uniforms and flower pot hats – whip into the downtown core with classics from cult fave albums Freedom of Choice and Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! Also rocking the Square will be Canada’s Men Without Hats, fresh off a sold-out return to the stage at SXSW 2011.

“We’re excited to have such legendary artists play the busiest hub in Toronto for the largest music festival in Canada,” says Joshua Ostroff, music editor, AOL Canada. “It will be a great time, with amazing music and we’re looking forward to being right in the centre of the party”

SoCal pop-punk hits NXNE on Thursday, June 16, with Descendents. It’s a rare chance to see one of the genre’s most influential bands, touring with their classic late-80s lineup for the first time in a decade. They’ll share the Yonge-Dundas Square stage with Vice Records’ L.A. hardcore supergroup OFF! featuring Keith Morris (Circle Jerks & Black Flag), Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides), Steven Shane McDonald (Redd Kross) and Mario Rubacaba (Hot Snakes & Rocket From The Crypt).

Sirius Satellite Radio touches down at Yonge-Dundas Square on Friday, June 17, for a live-to-air North American broadcast featuring Juno-nominated Stars. The band recently sold out consecutive nights at Massey Hall and opened for Coldplay in Ottawa, and their NXNE set will be a highlight of the festival. Also on the bill is Montreal trio Land of Talk, generating great reviews in Pitchfork and Stereogum.

"A live show and broadcast from Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square is a great way to share the excitement with our listeners across Canada and the U.S. while marking SIRIUS’ 6th year of support for NXNE,” said Andreanne Sasseville, Director, Canadian Content Development and Industry Relations, SIRIUS Canada Inc.

NXNE’s final festival night rolls out Sunday, June 19, as a second colossal evening party takes hold of Yonge-Dundas Square and Yonge Street, fuelled by performances by alternative hip-hop legends The Pharcyde, whose 90s release Bizarre Ride II was named by Kanye West as his favourite album ever. The night also features Grammy Award winners Digable Planets, tagged in Rolling Stone as “everything hip-hop should be: artistically sound, unabashedly conscious and downright cool.”

Funding supporting all NXNE’s free public concerts at Yonge-Dundas Square is provided by the Government of Ontario.

There’s even more for fans at NXNE this June: California’s Dum Dum Girls, coming off a 2010 tour with MGMT and Vampire Weekend; Chad van Gaalen, playing new songs from his upcoming release, Diaper Island; and Twin Shadow, hitting the festival on the heels of shows at SXSW, Coachella, and Bonnaroo.

All NXNE Festival passes and wristbands are now on sale, available at www.nxne.com. Early-bird pricing for NXNE Priority Passes is available through April 25.

The complete NXNE Music line-up and schedule, NXNE Film schedule and additional NXNE Interactive programming will be announced over the next few weeks. Stay tuned!

CHRISTY & EMILY: TALK NORMAL

For Christy & Emily, these songs are a preview of their newer sound with bass (Pete Kerlin) and drums (Kristin Mueller). Later in the spring of 2011, Christy & Emily will be heading to the Faust Studio in southern Germany to record a new full-length album with this quartet. They are happy with the way the band allows them to expand sonically. The extra track on the digital download card is a song by Oakley Hall, called “Endtime Evangelist,” off of their first self-titled album on Bulb (four years before they signed to Merge). This song has been strong on Emily's mind for half a decade, only coming out as a cover that the duo has been performing live in the last year.
Talk Normal's "Hurricane" is a soaring narrative piece. Lead by drummer Andrya Ambro's melodic lead vocal and buffeted by guitarist Sarah Register's harmonies, "Hurricane" is a sing-a-long story told with humility, grace & pleasing cacophony. Conceptual references range from U.S. Girls to Meredith Monk to Tears For Fears to The Velvet Underground – yet the sound is all their own, with an ebbing structure that carries the imagination through a manic ocean of soundscapes, wildly complex and still simple enough to be howled at the moon.

Track List:
Side A
Christy & Emily - “Bells”
Side B
Talk Normal - “Hurricane”
*Digital download cards will include an extra Christy & Emily track, “Endtime Evangelist”
Christy & Emily is:
Emily Manzo - electric piano
Christy Edwards - guitar
Peter Kerlin - bass
Kristin Mueller - drums

Pittsburgh City Council Honors Gregg Gillis

Today, Tuesday, December 7, Pittsburgh City Councilman, William Peduto, presented a proclamation from City Council honoring Gregg Gillis (aka Girl Talk) for his work and support of his hometown, Pittsburgh, and declared today "Gregg Gillis Day" in the City of Pittsburgh. An official ceremony for the reading of the proclamation was held this morning at the City Council Building. It was open to the public, and aired live on City Channel Pittsburgh (Comcast channel 13 and Verizon channel 44).
Girl Talk played two sold out shows this past weekend, Friday, December 3 and Saturday, December 4 at Pittsburgh's brand new amphitheater, Stage AE. These were the first two performances at this venue.
Girl Talk's new album, All Day, is available for free download here.

Girl Talk's New Album, All Day, Out Today

Celebrating 10-plus years of sample-obsessed production and relentless touring, Gregg Gillis returns with All Day, his fifth album as Girl Talk, and his most epic, densely layered, and meticulously composed musical statement to date.  Continuing the saga from the previously acclaimed albums, Night Ripper and Feed The Animals, Gillis lays down a more diverse range of samples to unfold a larger dynamic between slower transitions and extreme cut-ups.  With the grand intent of creating the most insane and complex pop collage album ever heard, large catalogs of both blatantly appropriated melodies and blasts of unrecognizable fragments were assembled for the ultimate Girl Talk record (clocking in at 71 minutes and 373 samples).

Earlier this year, Girl Talk finally took a break from touring, festival dates, and college shows, in order to create this album that is now being released immediately after its completion.  While posting the album as a free download on the Illegal Art label's site allows All Day to reach his fan-base quickly and with minimal cost, Gillis spent more time on this album than any previous release and considers it the most fully realized and evolved manifestation of the Girl Talk aesthetic.

Download Girl Talk’s All Day here for free.

(There are no strings attached to this free download – no email address needed, no potential donation, or anything of that nature, and it will remain this way indefinitely.)

Since the release of Feed The Animals, things have flourished for Girl Talk. He's played almost 300 shows and hardly taken a full week off from hitting the road. He's playing even larger venues and making even more of a spectacle -- he's employed a small crew of toilet paper launching stage hands, who also propel confetti, balloons, and inflate oddly chosen props into the audience. For the New Year's Eve show to ring in 2010, a team was hired to build a life-size house, with attention to fine details, on the stage at Chicago's Congress Theater.  Described as the craziest house party ever, Girl Talk continues to please live audiences as the mass of sweaty bodies at his shows continually grows. Touring highlights from the last couple of years include the Vancouver Olympics, large festivals such as Coachella, Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, V-Fest, Sasquatch, Rothbury, Monolith, Planeta Terra, and trips to Australia, Japan, South America, Europe, and Mexico.

As previously announced, Girl Talk will be touring extensively in 2011 in support of this release.

Kermit Ruffins Releasing Happy Talk, Playing BAM, Voodoo, Fallon!

Leading up to the release of his latest album, Happy Talk on October 26, Kermit Ruffins is happy to announce that he will be performing at The Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Red Hot + New Orleans in New York on December 3rd and 4th. A part of BAM’s Next Wave Festival, Kermit will be joined by New Orleans contemporaries Trombone Shorty, Dr. John, Ledisi, Marc Broussard, Partners-N-Crimes, and Irma Thomas to show off the best the city has to offer — from second-line stomps to the raucous energy of bounce. Following the performance, Kermit will also join ?uestlove and The Roots on December 7th on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” And later this month, Kermit will be representing his hometown at New Orleans’ Voodoo Festival. Performing on Saturday Oct. 30th at 5 p.m., Kermit will be joined by Dr. Michael White, Jeremy Davenport, Jason Marsalis, David Pulphus, and Victor Atkins as a part of Basin Street Records’ All-Star Revue. And to add to all this, the first round of 2010 GRAMMY® ballots have been released and Kermit Ruffins' Have A Crazy Cool Christmas has been entered in a number of categories.

All this leads up to the release of Kermit’s latest album, Happy Talk. Produced by GRAMMY® Award Winner Tracey Freeman (Harry Connick, Jr., Jeremy Davenport), Happy Talk is Kermit’s first collection of big band music. And to celebrate the release of the record, Kermit has scheduled an album Release Party for November 5that Rock & Bowl in New Orleans with a big band.

It’s hard to think of how anyone wouldn’t benefit from a little bit more of Kermit’s perennially positive attitude, his iconic take on New Orleans jazz, and his delicious BBQ — which he still serves after his weekly shows in New Orleans, by the way. And with the exposure Kermit has received with David Simon’s “Tremé,” Kermit has gone from New Orleans’ legendary native son to America’s new favorite jazzman.

For Kermit, Happy Talk has been a long time coming. Throughout his career, he has made no secret of his love of big band music and his admiration for legendary bandleaders like Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton and Count Basie. As the bandleader, lead vocalist and trumpeter on the new album, Kermit has taken the big band sound and given it his own “Kermit swing.” There’s his rousing take of Sam Cooke’s classic “Ain’t That (Good News)” and “If I Only Had A Brain, which Kermit infuses with a healthy dose of Latin spice. The album also pays tribute to Kermit’s musical inspiration, Louis Armstrong, with versions of songs that Armstrong made famous including “Hey Look Me Over,” “La Vie En Rose,” and “Shine.” Kermit also leads his band through his own swingin’ originals like “I Got A Tremé Woman” and “New Orleans (My Home Town).”

Kermit was born with the music in his blood. Growing up, Kermit used to skip lunch and perform second line music for his classmates before the principal would shut him and his friends down. In 1982, Kermit founded The Rebirth Brass Band with his high school classmate and tuba player Philip Frazier in Tremé, LA. The band took off after their legendary first performance at Jazz Fest and quickly became one of the most beloved brass bands in New Orleans and the United States. In 1992, Kermit founded the Barbecue Swingers, his traditional jazz quintet. Their weekly performances at Vaughan’s Lounge for 17 years and Bullet’s Sports Bar since Katrina have become staple New Orleans events, with Kermit tailgating his shows by serving up that legendary barbecue!

When David Simon decided to follow up “The Wire” with “Tremé,” he approached Kermit to have him appear on the show. As Simon put it, “There wasn't any use in casting someone else. Only Kermit can play Kermit." Truer words could not have been spoken.

Girl Talk Releases NYE Chicago Documentary

In the first few days of 2010, we shared news of Girl Talk’s mind-blowing, over-the-top New Year’s Eve extravaganza, where he threw one of the largest house parties the world has seen to celebrate the end of the decade. With so much time and effort put into making this such an extraordinary night, Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis) and his crew decided not just those in attendance, but all Girl Talk fans, should have a chance to see the insanity. The planning and show was documented on multiple HD cameras, and has now been made into a short film that’s almost ready to be shared. You can get a sneak peek of “Girl Talk NYE Chicago” by checking out the trailer here.

To give you an idea, here’s what went down: As a surprise to the 4,500-capacity Congress Theatre audience in Chicago, Girl Talk had a two-story, five room house built on stage. This house took months to plan, and 4+ full days and 21+ crewmembers to build. Girl Talk and the set designers seriously took things to the next level when it came to the detail that went into each aspect of the house. They drywalled the rooms, made a real staircase, and fake wooden floors, built a kitchen that included a refrigerator with a note stuck on the door, and a table with a fruit bowl, blender and more, a living room that included a hutch filled with china, fireplace, couch, coffee table, rug, picture frames and more, the kid's room had a bed, desk, computer and mouse, pencil jar, trophy, amongst other items, and the bathroom featured a real toilet, sink, shower and curtain. Plus, outside the house, there were even fake trees lining the yard, and a rock was placed in front of the house covering the table Girl Talk works on. The lights constructed on the outside and inside of the house, including an LCD curtain surrounding the house to make it look like the night sky, and all over the venue, were equally elaborate. When the house was first presented to the audience, only a few lamps inside each room were turned on, however, as the night neared midnight, the house counted down from 9 to 0, and then once midnight hit, the house came alive as lights all over the house, inside and out, shown bright. The kitchen floor eventually lit up turning into a disco-dance floor, the entire bathroom could strobe any color, the computer in the kid’s room had an LED light attached to it, and intense lights came from the fireplace. There were also special lights strategically hidden all over the venue that were active and radiant throughout the night. Check out stills from the film below.

Girl Talk has been on the road nonstop since Feed The Animals was released in June 2008. After playing over 240 shows and rarely taking more than five days off at a time, Gregg has finally taken a break for most of the summer to work on his next album, which will be unleashed upon the world in early 2011. Stay tuned for more details!
