Rooted in the tradition of bluegrass but described perhaps more accurately as progressive acoustic/modern roots, HFTH produces a vibrant mixture of homegrown compositions, traditional harmonies, and improvisation. In the live setting, HFTH effortlessly ventures into a myriad of musical styles and sonic landscapes that appeals to a boundless array of listeners. Connie Smith's Long Line of Heartaches Released Today!

New recordings by the country music legend Connie Smith, long acclaimed as one of the greatest singers in the history of the genre have been as rare as the voice and knowing singing she brings to them.  Long Line of Heartaches, her first full album of new material since 1998 (and only her second since 1978) is an event in the making. That’s not just for the rarity, or because her legions of fans have so long awaited this news, but because in its range of undiluted traditional country moods, themes, rhythms and sound, this new Sugar Hill release is simply, unmistakably a new Connie Smith masterpiece, offering the pleasures of the very best that saw release during her remarkable run of recordings during the 1960s and ‘70s.

“And that,” she says. “is exactly what I wanted to accomplish.  I’ve had people ask me what this album was going to be like, since it’s been a long time since they’ve heard me on record, but my musical tastes have remained the same. I wanted this to be traditional country, and it is.”

“One of the reasons that I wanted to do this recording, and it’s a personal reason, is that I have such a deep love for traditional country music. We can talk about the music slipping away, or we can do something about it.  The only way I know to do something about it is to keep singing what I’ve always loved.”

The album’s dozen new tracks, potent songs of heartache, joy, and spirit recorded at Nashville’s celebrated RCA Victor Studio B, where Connie recorded most of her chart-topping hits in her first years as a recording artist, include five new traditional country songs co-written by Connie and husband Marty Stuart, the project’s producer.  Memorable songs come from long favored Smith sources such as icons Harlan Howard, Foster & Rice, Kostas`, Johnny Russell and Smith’s + longtime collaborator Dallas Frazier.  Frazier’s song “A Heart Like You” becomes the 69th Frazier composition that Smith has recorded – breaking his 30 years of songwriting silence, an event within itself.
Having become an overnight country sensation in 1964 when her first single, “Once a Day”, became a number one hit, the first time a female country singer’s debut single accomplished that.  Connie Smith enjoyed a string of hits in the following years that have become country standards, including “Ain’t Had No Lovin’”, “Just One Time”, “Run Away Little Tears” “I never Once Stopped Loving You” and “The Hurtin’s All Over”. She became a star whose iconic voice has influenced other singers for decades. She has recorded a string of 53 albums notable for their quality and range.
To this legacy she now adds Long Line of Heartaches, featuring her band The Sundowners and, for the first time, her three daughters, Julie, Jeanne and Jodi who add striking family harmonies on the contemporary hymn “Take My Hand.”
“I still love to sing as much as I ever did.  I could sing at the kitchen sink and I’d be happy. I feel it is my destiny to sing.”  Country music fans everywhere should rejoice in the fact that we get to be a part of that destiny.

The String Cheese Incident Announces 2011 Fall Dates

Today, The String Cheese Incident announced their first multi-city run in four years. “Roots Run Deep” 2011 begins Thanksgiving weekend and travels through southern and eastern U.S. historic venues including Atlanta’s legendary Fox Theatre, a return to the newly re-opened Georgia Theatre, Nashville’s landmark Ryman Auditorium (with a special acoustic first set), and a two-night stand at New York City’s magnificent United Palace. The String Cheese Incident has only made limited appearances since 2007, so “Roots Run Deep” affirms the band is back together and ready to rock. In 2009, SCI sent waves through the music community when they broke their almost three year silence by announcing they would play a headlining slot at the second annual ROTHBURY music festival. The performances were downright epic, and left fans old and new - and the band themselves - wondering what was next.

In 2010 and 2011, SCI played a handful of sold out multi-night extravaganzas at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, 1STBank Center, and Horning’s Hideout, and a monstrous “Hulaween” run at Hampton Coliseum. In addition, SCI performed much buzzed-about festival plays at Bonnaroo’s 10 year celebration and the inaugural Electric Forest, where SCI anchored the cutting-edge festival with three headlining performances - and seamlessly bridged the gap between the jamband and electronic music communities once and for all.

Recent live Incidents have proven that The String Cheese Incident continues to evolve, and that the band is more musically inspired and unified than ever. “All of us feel that our recent Incidents have been some of our best yet,” explains SCI’s Keith Moseley. “We are excited to get on the bus and play again in such historic venues.” Michael Kang adds, “It’ll be great to immerse ourselves on the road for a bit. There is nothing like the groove we get into when we play nine shows in ten days. It will allow us to take even more chances.”

The first annual Otis Taylor Trance Blues Jam Festival is a weekend of public workshops and jams for musicians and fans of all levels and ages who wish to join world-renowned guitarist Bob “Steady Rollin’” Margolin, Tony Trischka (International Bluegrass Music Association Banjo Player of the Year), multi-instrumentalist Don Vappie, bassist George Porter, Jr. (Meters), guitarist/vocalist Standing Bear, Cassie Taylor and renaissance bluesman Otis Taylor.

The event, held Friday-Sunday, November 25-27, begins with a pre-Trance Jam hosted by Taylor, Margolin and Vappie at the Boulder Outlook Hotel on Friday at 8 p.m.

“You don’t have to be a musician to get involved with the Trance Blues Jam Festival,” says Taylor, a Boulder resident and festival founder. “We would like to see the festival evolve to include artists hosting sessions slanted towards many different styles of music. The more types of participants we have, the better,” Taylor says. “The goal is to fill the hills with the sound of music of all genres: classical, blues, jazz, pop, world, rap, spoken word; [and] instruments of every type: horns, strings, percussion and even street instruments like cans and buckets.”

Taylor’s compelling style of path-forging and “trance-blues” sonic landscapes has won praise from The New York Times and NPR.  While drawing upon elements of early American blues and even earlier African music, Taylor has been called “arguably the most relevant blues artist of our time” by Guitar Player magazine.
Taylor and the visiting artists will lead weekend workshops both Saturday and Sunday, ranging in size from 40 to 60 students. Saturday’s Boulder Theater workshop culminates with the Saturday Night Trance-Blues Jam, an open-to-the-public audience-participation jam session with hundreds of musicians, steered by Otis Taylor beginning at 6 p.m.  A special concert will follow on Saturday night at 9p.m. at the Boulder Theater. Sunday’s Trance Blues workshops at the Boulder Outlook Hotel go from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Sunday workshops are geared towards younger performers and will conclude with a Family Jam in the afternoon. The first annual Otis Taylor’s Trance Blues Jam Festival is presented and sponsored by the Boulder Outlook Hotels & Suites, Goodbye Blue Monday, Mountain Ocean, Boulder Valley Velodrome, Cronin Jewelers and the Boulder Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Los Angeles based band Orgone is many souls with a cosmic connection, a natural creative force and musicians who have played together for years. They are self schooled and continue to shape their musical voice as a solid unit of guys who hang, spin records and jam out their shared inspirations. With a rooted sense of funk, soul, afrobeat, deep rhythms and an intimate understanding of dj culture as well as each others’ individual talents, Orgone seamlessly slides through multiple styles and dynamic performances. The group continuously injects whatever they play with a heavy brand of raw funk power.

The band’s reputation amongst the funk, soul, and hip hop fraternity is further backed-up by an impressive and ever growing resume that expands their reach. This includes a spot in an Adidas campaign, a tour with and backing band for Bun B (from UGK), Pharoahe Monch, Plantlife (including a BBC performance for Jools Holland), Little Brother, Nice and Smooth, Black Sheep and New Orleans funk legend Eddie Bo at a Hurricane Katrina benefit. It’s a recorded history of the band and its musical family throwing down: check the lethal neck-busting bass intro of founding member Tim Glum on “You Already Doin It”, the Detroit thump of bassist Dale Jennings on the deep hypnotic funk soundscape of “Vibromeyer”, the dance floor soul of singer Gino Garafalo on the undeniably hip-shaking “Come Around” and the sub-atomic gut punch of Orgone bassist Ethan Phillips on the heavy psychedelic groove of “Hott Karl”.

Psy-Trance innovators Infected Mushroom have become one of the biggest electronic bands on the planet. Twice ranked among the world’s 10 best DJs by the bible of the scene, the U.K.’s DJ Magazine, the Israel-bred, L.A. based duo bring a frenetic rock energy to the form. Their explosive show, featuring guitars, live drums, intensely passionate vocals and an ambitious multimedia backdrop, ranks among the genre’s most unpredictably joyous events. And their recordings continually venture where other electronic acts fear to tread.

Amit “Duvdev” Duvedevani and Erez Eisen have been working for nearly two years on an aggressive new album – their first since 2007’s critically acclaimed Vicious Delicious – for dance-music visionary Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto label. Duvdev describes the as-yet untitled record, recorded at Infected Mushroom Laboratory in L.A. and slated for a June 2009 release, as a return to the pair’s metal roots. The Belle Brigade Announce Fall Tour Dates

Having just wrapped a summer-long tour with k.d. lang, Los Angeles' The Belle Brigade have announced that they will hit the road this fall for a series of dates with Groupe Love, followed by a tour with Blitzen Trapper and Dawes. Please see below for more details.

Fronted by siblings Barbara and Ethan Gruska, and backed by their talented band (bassist Keith Karmen, keyboardist, electric guitarist Ben Cassorla, electric guitarist Harlan Silverman and drummer Mike Green), The Belle Brigade are touring in support of their self-titled debut album, which has been critically praised by Spin, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Post, Nylon, and the LA Weekly. John K Band Labor Day Weekend Mini-Tour

Its been a hot summer, but this past Furthur tour on the east coast was an incredible (and sweaty) blast!  And now the John K Band is pleased to announce that as the summer rolls into the final stretch, the John K Band will be out on the road for a Labor Day Weekend Mini-tour!  A three-night run that sees us returning to the 8x10 in Baltimore (Fri Sep 2) and the State Theatre in the DC area (Sat Sep 3) and then making our first real road-trip to the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ (Sun Sep 4).

At our Spring performances we brought out some new material, including new original songs, and we have more planned for these upcoming shows.  You can listen to some of our previous shows free at the Internet Archive.
