Infected Mushroom Return with ‘Legend of the Black Shawarma’

For their highly anticipated release LEGEND OF THE BLACK SHAWARMA, electronic-rock innovators INFECTED MUSHROOM return with their patented hybrid of thrashing metal and psychedelic trance to bring a frenetic rock energy to the form and venture where other electronic acts fear to tread.  The Israeli-bred, Los Angeles-based electronic duo continues to push sonic boundaries for their eighth studio album that’s due out September 8, 2009 on electronic music giant Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto label.

infected-mushroomLegend Of The Black Shawarma sees Amit “Duvdev” Duvedevani and Erez Eisen teaming with high-profile rockers. The album’s lead single “Smashing the Opponent” features a scorching vocal from Korn’s Jonathan Davis, while Jane’s Addiction frontman and alt-rock trailblazer Perry Farrell lends his inimitable pipes to the follow-up track “Killing Time.”  “Recording with Jonathan and Perry was a highlight, of course,” Duvdev notes.  “They were both incredibly cool. The fact that they liked the tracks was awesome because we’re huge fans of what they do.”

The album is the follow-up to 2007’s Vicious Delicious and takes INFECTED MUSHROOM's psy-trance fusion of bruising, metallic rock and unstoppable dance-floor beats to a new level.  “It’s a really diverse record,” Duvdev says, “but it’s even more aggressive–both on the metal side and on the breakbeat side.”  Taking its time to craft the album, the duo worked on Shawarma whenever their frenetic, globe-trotting tour schedule permitted.  Whether singing about “Smashing” and “Killing” or paying tribute to beloved (Los Angeles) eateries like “Poquito Mas,” “Frank’s” (“The best taco place in Mexico in our opinion”) or Israeli hummus factory “Sae’ed,” INFECTED MUSHROOM prove they’ve stayed hungry despite their massive international success.

And what of the album’s mysterious, culinary title?  “We were on tour in Australia two years ago,” he explains.  “My friend came to me said, ‘I have this dream to dive with sharks.’  They do that in Australia–you’re lowered into shark-infested waters in a cage.” At that point, Duvdev warned his burly friend that in a wetsuit he would resemble, to toothy denizens of the deep, a certain meat wrap of Middle Eastern origin.  “I told him if he did this, there were five gigantic sharks waiting for a shawarma like him to come down in a cage and be devoured.  We thought that was pretty funny and the Legend of the Black Shawarma was born.”  As the title track’s cautionary lyrics have it:  “Life’s been treating you nice/You better be wise/And enjoy your moment.”

Thanks to INFECTED MUSHROOM's genre-pushing songs and incendiary performances, the adventurous duo has become one of the biggest live electronic bands on the planet.  Their schedule has proved as relentless as their juggernaut jams.  From the Ultra Music Festival in Miami (which drew over 100,000 attendees this past March), Coachella, the Virgin Festival in Baltimore, Mexico’s OMIX, Brazil’s Ipanema Beach and Melbourne’s Metro Club, INFECTED MUSHROOM has averaged about 120 live performances per year. Twice ranked among the world’s 10 best DJs by the bible of the scene, the U.K.’s DJ magazine, they routinely whip crowds of all cultures into the same whirling froth.

Their explosive show--featuring guitars, live drums, Duvdev’s intensely passionate vocals, Erez’s nimble keyboards and an ambitious multimedia backdrop--ranks among the genre’s most unpredictably joyous events. INFECTED MUSHROOM will highlight new selections from Shawarma during several of their live shows in North America this summer, launching “Smash The Opponent” during their performance at electronic mega-music festival Electric Daisy Carnival in Los Angeles June 27.  The complete list of dates follows below.

Mama’s Cookin’ Return to Their Colorado Roots

mamaMama’s Cookin’ returns to their Colorado roots in March for a 10-day trek through the mountain west. The formerly Colorado-based project is well known in the area for their trademark blend of hip-hop beats and soul-driven rock. Kicking off the tour in Fort Collins, CO - the band will zigzag across the state, playing shows in Denver, Boulder and a handful of mountain towns.

Since forming in Gunnison, CO, in 2001, Mama’s Cookin’ has garnered a reputation as being a pioneer of a new sound with a knack for precise timing and fluidity. The rootsy ensemble is driven by gritty guitars and an impeccable rhythm section that dares audiences not to dance. Zebuel Early’s sincere lyricism and vocal delivery incorporates spoken word and soulful singing. Their huge rock sound has Led Zeppelin painted all over it, yet their soul seems to come straight from the Mississippi Delta, with a dusting of New Orleans funk.

With more than seven successful years under their belt, the quartet features the right proportions of harmonica and slide guitar with a tight rhythm section carrying the sound. The tightened arrangement now features Zebuel Early (guitar, vocals), Eric Matlock (keys), Mike Adamo (drums) and Steve LaBella's (bass) – allowing the music to breathe more freely. One only need look at the quartet’s influences – R.L. Burnside, Hound Dog Taylor, Johnnie Taylor, Digable Planets – to realize the variety in their musical ambition.

On tour in support of their self-titled album, which was named by Jambands.com as the 12th best of 2008, Mama’s Cookin’ packs a powerful punch both live and recorded. Their trek through Colorado will include stops in Boulder, Breckenridge, Denver and Vail, before heading back to where it all began for the band, Crested Butte. Two shows follow in Telluride with a Colorado finale in Grand Junction, before the band heads west for select coastal performances.

Cryptacize Return With 'Mythomania,' Out April 21st

photo by Denny Renshaw- for the Grateful Web

Cryptacize deals in the unforgettable melody, the forsaken chord and the extravagant sentiment. It's a distinct kind of pleasure they offer, not casual background or 'lifestyle' music. An unlikely synthesis of musical styles, Mythomania (Cryptacize's second) is an album not quite like any other. Nedelle Torrisi's surefooted and richly nuanced vocal arabesques, like a modern day Freddie Mercury or Ronnie Spector, strangely complement Chris Cohen's guitar, maniacally sped-up a la Les Paul or staccato and funny like Roy Smeck or Adolph Jacobs of the Coasters. Michael Carreira's syncopated drum corps rudiments and pit-orchestra rave-ups propel the songs with a refreshingly buoyant touch that never lapses into rock music cliches.

Mythomania is a revelation by anyone's measure. The playing shows a new level of confidence and intent, as well as an artful sense of timing - it's the sound of a band that's found themselves and is growing by leaps and bounds. Patiently built ideas are brought to full fruition, and it's recorded in fidelity that surrounds you. The music is thicker and more continuous; in addition to autoharp, guitars and drums there are now electric basses, keyboards, piano, even found or purely electronic sounds. And yet the same sense of space and suspense which guided 2008's Dig That Treasure is instantly recognizable on Mythomania.

As the title Mythomania suggests, reality is transformed when fiction is created upon fiction and though it may be barely recognizable or compatible with the world of the everyday, this reality can also be beautiful - see for example the album's title track, an allegorical tale about the moon's view of earthly folly. Exploring the paradox of human perception, a personal ambivalence about time and change, the notions of chance and free will versus those of eternalism and fate, the limits of credibility and belief, Mythomania builds upon the philosophical concerns of Dig That Treasure. Like its predecessor, its tone is often both happy and sad, pragmatic and mystical, hopeful and doomed.

Never ones to follow the rules, Cryptacize have been touring the US in a Toyota Corolla (opening for bands as diverse as Why?, Danielson, Shearwater, Ponytail, Magik Markers, Marnie Stern, The Blow, Mirah, etc.) performing using miniature amps and drums - a sight which has caught many a spectator off guard. They are a thoroughly unconventional band, but one that is somehow miraculously easy on the ears. Deceptively simple, using modest means to achieve ambitious ends, never predictable, Cryptacize challenges preconceptions about how a song should go or how rock music should make you feel. But in the end, they always leave you with a tune you can hum and lyrics that tell a story.

Recorded by Cryptacize in a cabin near Yosemite National Park over the summer of 2008, Mythomania will be released on April 21st on Asthmatic Kitty.

The Duhks Return with Fast Paced World

The Duhks- for the Grateful Web

Hailed by the New York Times as one of the artists at the forefront of the neo-folk movement, the Duhks continue the evolution with their fourth album, 'Fast Paced World,' (August 12th / Sugar Hill Records). "We traveled from Winnipeg, locked ourselves in a Nashville basement, pooled our ideas together and invented a new sound," says new frontwoman and bilingual, budding soul queen, Sarah Dugas (she replaced Jessee Havey in 2007).

Produced by Jay Joyce, who joins an impressive line of producers (Béla Fleck, Tim O'Brien) before him, the Duhks have created their most energetic, fully realized, unearthly album to date.   Seriously. "Jay's basement studio was like something out of the Star Trek Enterprise," adds founder and clawhammer banjoist, Leonard Podolak, who, in the past, "traditionally stuck close to the acoustic sound of our instruments.   This record is a beautiful mosaic of different ideas and soundscapes."

Leonard, Sarah, Tania Elizabeth (fiddle, mandolin), guitarist Jordan McConnell and new worldbeat drummer Christian Dugas (Sarah's brother) have melded French lounge pop ("Toujours Vouloir") and scratchy soul meditations on the Galveston flood in 1900 ("Mighty Storm") and sleeping ("Sleepin' Is All I Wanna Do") with the soundtrack of the weirdest 1930s Marlene Dietrich movie you never saw ("This Fall"), and beyond.    "We're all proud of this record and can't wait to release it to the world," adds Sarah.

In the space between the Grammy-nominated 'Migrations' (2006, Sugar Hill Records) and now, the Juno-winning band has gained critical love ("overall virtuosity that could make them stars" - Boston Globe), toured the world and earned a solid fan base - no doubt due to their manic, spirited live shows. (Check YouTube for John Paul Jones joining the band for "Whole Lotta Love").

Environmental issues have always been a passion for the band, inspiring them to launch The Duhks Sustainability Project (www.greenduhks.com).

The goal is to "tour as sustainably as possible - Biodiesel, local organic farmers, sustainable eco-conscious clothing," says Tania, who was invited by Bonnaroo to speak about sustainability during the festival on June 13th.    In addition, Bonnaroo has chosen the Duhks to perform on the Solar Stage on June 14th.
