Scattered Trees Premiere Live “A Conversation” Video

Today, Chicago’s Scattered Trees premiered their live video for “A Conversation About Death on New Years Eve” on My Old Kentucky Blog. The video for “A Conversation” is a glimpse of Scattered Trees’ live performances that the band honed playing around Chicago. The group has also announced a series of new dates, including a new SXSW showcase on March 18th at The Ghost Room as a part of The NAIL/The MuseBox SXSW Day Party.

The band’s upcoming performances lead up to the release of Scattered Trees’ latest record Sympathy, which will be released on April 5th via Roll Call Records/EMI. The album is a focused, deeply personal collection of songs that finds Scattered Trees experimenting with lush multi-part harmonies, constructing dynamic builds, and exploring the intricacies of love and loss. Opening with “Bury the Floors,” lead singer Nate Eiesland sings “It’s the house that I built you to fall / We started to walk then we stood up to crawl / So bury the floors and burn down the walls / to find ourselves by morning.” Driving rock epics like “Four Days Straight” rub shoulders with melancholic elegies like “Where You Came From.” The album’s title track starts with a stripped-down plaintive mandolin, ultimately fading into a slow-burning orchestral groove. Melting into “Five Minutes,” Scattered Trees continues the build until the track bursts forth. The band rounds out the record with the mournful acoustic closer “On Your Side,” a fitting tribute for a deeply heartfelt and therapeutic album.

Bobby Long Releases "A Winter Tale" Today!

Today ATO Records releases A Winter Tale, the highly anticipated debut record from British singer-songwriter Bobby Long. Recorded in London, the eleven-song album was produced by Grammy-award winner Liam Watson (The White Stripes) and features backing vocals from Nona Hendryx (LaBelle) and Icelandic singer Lay Low as well as pedal steel by B.J. Cole (Elton John, Sting). In support of the record, Long is currently on a North American tour, including dates at the Sundance Film Festival and SXSW.

Colin Stetson Premieres "Stars In His Head"

Colin Stetson is a horn player of uncommon strength, skill and genre-defying creativity. He composes and performs otherworldly songs that combine a mastery of circular breathing technique with percussive valve-work and reed vocalisations, making a polyphonic solo music that combines influences as diverse as Bach, early metal, American pre-war Gospel, and the explorations of Jimi Hendrix, Peter Brotzman and Albert Ayler.

New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges is Stetson's second solo record and his first for Constellation.  Colin has been making his mark as a staggering solo performer for several years now, in front of audiences small and large, from intimate jazz and experimental music venues to big stages, whether opening for Arcade Fire or The National, or playing at jazz and new music festivals like Moers and London Jazz. His talents have been widely recognised and employed by artists as diverse as Tom Waits, Laurie Anderson, TV On The Radio and Bon Iver.  Colin also plays in Belle Orchestre and Sway Machinery.
The music on New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges was captured entirely live in single takes at Montréal's Hotel2Tango studio, with no overdubs or looping, using over 20 mics positioned close and far throughout the live room. Guest vocals by Laurie Anderson and Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) are the only exceptions to this rule, along with one brief french horn that was multi-tracked.
The Judges sessions were co-produced by Stetson and Shahzad Ismaily and engineered by Efrim Menuck at the Hotel2Tango, then taken to Greenhouse StudiosBen Frost.
The result is a highly original, experimental, euphoric record that fires on all levels: a document of an astoundingly strong and gifted player; a compositional tour-de-force; and a studio production bursting with intensity and inventiveness.

New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges features cover art by Tracy Maurice and will be issued on CD in custom 100% recycled paperboard gatefold jacket and on 180gLP with a limited edition screenprinted poster contained in the first pressing. The album will also be available digitally.

Jake Hertzog New CD + Miles Café Appearances

Jake Hertzog, one of the most original and exciting young guitarists on the scene, will be returning to the studio next month to record his third album. At 24 years old, Jake has already released two critically acclaimed fusion albums, toured the country as bandleader for Nickelodeon pop-stars Nat and Alex Wolff, and currently writes a jazz column for Guitar Player Magazine entitled “Hey Jazz Guy”.  He was also the youngest ever winner of the Montreux Jazz Festival Jazz Guitar Competition in 2006 and has performed and taught worldwide.

The upcoming record, a follow up to last year’s Patterns, will feature Jake’s all-star rhythm section, Victor Jones and Harvie S.  Harvie will also be taking on a new role in addition to bassist on this latest project as producer. “I am thrilled to be producing Jake Hertzog's upcoming CD- Jake is a serious and original artist who is becoming a major voice in contemporary music. I have been a part of his music from his first project as bassist and musical colleague --so this project holds special meaning for me.” Said Harvie, in regards to the upcoming collaboration.  In addition to hundreds of records on which Harvie has played bass, his production credits include Michael Brecker, Phil Woods, Chris Potter, Bob Mintzer, and Mike Stern.


Jake will be bringing his trio into one of New York’s most impressive recording studios, The Magic Shop, that has hosted artists such as The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Norah Jones and Arcade Fire.  “It’s the perfect place for the synthesis of jazz and indie rock”, says Hertzog. “That’s what this record will be all about, continuing more deeply in the direction of the last two albums.”  The Jake Hertzog Trio will be in the studio next month and the record will be released in late spring.

Performing with the venerated rhythm section of Harvie S (bass) and Victor Jones (drums) the Jake Hertzog Trio bends genres with their exhilarating live performances. This is an event not to miss, as the band prepares for their third studio album.

The Shpongletron Experience at the Boulder Theater

Shpongle & Z2 Entertainment are proud to present The Shpongletron Experience with Random Rab & Hallucinogen at the Boulder Theater on Saturday, April 23rd, 2011.

After three groundbreaking albums over the course of a decade, the internationally acclaimed electronica project Shpongle has returned from what fans feared was the end of the project when Nothing Lasts…but Nothing is Lost, their third album, was released. Not prepared to leave us hanging, electronic music pioneers Simon Posford and Raja Ram have continued to push the envelope and break boundaries to create yet another sonic masterpiece: the much-awaited fourth Shpongle album, Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland.

There are languages here that Shpongle fans will know and love as much as their previous work, and yet there are some massive leaps forward in terms of production techniques, sonic trickery, structure, and direction compared to all of the previous outings to date. With influences drawn from anywhere from Steve Reich and Mike Oldfield to the Batman movies and beyond, this really is another over the top record in terms of production skills, tonal textures, and original ideas from Shpongle. It is rich in detail and emotion, in worldly and otherworldly samples and inspiration, and in harmonic and melodic construction.

Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland opens with the massive Electroplasm, a rapidfire ascent into eastern scales and rich harmonic textures, underscored with a strongly pronounced rhythmic foundation. They dial in a different mode with Shpongolese Spoken Here, which transitions from glitchy breaks to four-on-the-floor mayhem before settling into a more laid-back but bouncy number. Nothing is Something Worth Doing is a grounded yet floaty work featuring a sophisticated tonal and harmonic palette, six-and-a-half minutes of timelessness before fading into the long-awaited Ineffable Mysteries. With original atmospheric and vocal samples from India, this tracks simple beginnings lead to a strong rhythmic drive and incredible sonic manipulations blending Raja Rams flute, Indian vocals, and synthesized creations.

That journey is followed by another - I Am You moves through shifting sands of time and sound, from its mysterious beginning through its central love song inspired by a special muse, evolving into a rhythmic and sonic tapestry of phenomenal complexity. Invisible Man In A Fluorescent Suit opens with a mournful cello solo that expands in true Shpongolian fashion into a celebratory melodic blend of synthesized and organic instrumentation before fading into the next track. No Turn Un-Stoned is cut from a different cloth, with a broodier opening that morphs into shimmering effects and soulful vocals floating over crisply defined rhythmic elements.

The final track is a multi-faceted jewel in the crown of this glowing album: Backwards Through The Cosmic Mirror features a grounded four-on-the-floor rhythm that supports forward-moving harmonic and sonic explorations with as many twists and turns as the previous tracks, eventually fading into the floating sea of soundlessness from which its brilliance arose.



Shpongle continues to evolve and inspire, as their sold-out gigs worldwide have demonstrated. The anticipation for this album is such that their launch party at the Roundhouse in London this October sold out and a second night had to be added. The demand for this album is expected to be in proportion to the uniqueness of its content. The CD booklet was designed by Storm Thorgerson, who created the classic record sleeve for Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and other timeless releases, making the entire package a consistent creative tour de force. Unique in their sound, structure, and style, Shpongle is at the forefront of the music of our generation.

In the beginning, a father passed away and a child was born. Luther and Cody Dickinson lost their father, Memphis music legend Jim Dickinson, only months before Luther became one. Jim had always told them, “You need to be playing music together. You are better together than you will ever be apart.” Coincidentally, the Dickinson brothers were not together when Jim passed. At that moment, they were both off on their own, Luther with The Black Crowes and Cody with the Hill Country Revue.

Siriusmo To Preview Debut Album, Mosaik

After releasing dozens of singles & EPs on various Berlin-based record labels and remixing artists, including Scissor Sisters, Gossip, Chikinki, Simian Mobile Disco, Boys Noize, Digitalism, Chromeo, A-Trak, Munk and more, for over a decade, the inimitable Berlin producer, graffiti artist, ghost-painter & illustrator, Siriusmo (aka Moritz Friedrich), is set to release his debut album, Mosaik, March 1st on Monkeytown Records.

With Siriusmo’s previous releases striding confidently through a rich array of genres – from dubstep to disco, hip-hop to house, electro to experimental – his work is invested with incomparable diversity, eschewing outright any danger of a four-four snooze-fest over the course of an hour. Indeed, in its premeditated hodgepodge of styles, composite sonic totality and rugged texture, Mosaik couldn’t be more of a fitting rubric. Leading up this full-length release, Siriusmo is offering listeners a preview of what’s to come by featuring snippets of the record on his Soundcloud page. Several bits are already up, and the rest will be added by March 1st.

Betraying influences from the 70s to the present day and beyond, one foot keeps the door to the past ajar while the other kicks the door to the future wide open. The palpable funk and thumb-slap bass of opener, “High Together”, the pop-baroque of “Idiologie” and warped rap of “Bad Idea” all point towards Moritz's grounding in the records of Stevie Wonder, The Beatles and plentiful helpings of hip-hop. Any hint of nostalgia, however, is dragged kicking and screaming into a 21st Century discotheque where the bass is twisted, the beats are laden and space-age grandiosity envelops the whole.

Siriusmo’s timbre-palette is strikingly visceral and his understanding and appreciation of the intricacies of harmony prevail; every note is a corporal experience as well as an aural one. And for every drop of dancefloor sweat, there’s a soothing breeze to cool down. Individual melodic lines dance impishly around one another on “Signal”, for example, as sonic warmth is woven on a loom in your ears. Throughout Mosaik, Siriusmo makes an arresting switch from the beefy to the beautiful, from the body to the mind, as elegantly tapped organ keys play a melody with soulful poise. It's this type of canny counterpoint that provides the stitching throughout Mosaik's vibrant patchwork.

The Forms Premiere New Music feat Matt Berninger of The National

New York duo The Forms have premiered the debut track off their forthcoming Derealization EP out February 15th on Ernest Jenning / Threespheres (as well as the band's double LP version coupled with the Steve Albini produced album, Icarus, courtesy of Triple Down Records / Threespheres). The new song, entitled "Fire To The Ground," features frontman Matt Berninger of celebrated indie rock band The National, and is the second full track to surface from the new release.

The band has also announced full US tour dates taking the band to this year's SXSW marathon. Included in the dates are headlining performances, as well as one off shows supporting renown Washington, DC band The Dismemberment Plan. Full tour dates below.

Scattered Trees Announce Sympathy

On April 5th, Chicago’s Scattered Trees will release their full-length record, Sympathy, via Roll Call Records/EMI. In honor of the album’s release, the band is making their track "A Conversation About Death on New Years Eve" available for free download. Download the track here. The band will also be performing in Chicago on January 21 at Schubas.

For Scattered Trees, Sympathy is a labor of love that almost didn’t happen. The band grew up together in the outskirts of Chicago, playing music together in various groups over the years. They became a family in more ways than one, with some of the members sharing last names — albeit for different reasons. Scattered Trees became a staple of Chicago clubs, but as time passed, the band’s members were drawn to various parts of the country. Scattered Trees as a band looked all but over. And then, tragedy struck. Lead singer Nate Eiesland’s father passed away, and while mourning, Nate picked up his guitar again and started penning a record dedicated to his memory. Those songs became Sympathy.
