Here We Go Magic Play BOULDER At Fox Theater

It's been a big year for Here We Go Magic following the release of their much celebrated self-titled debut (Western Vinyl), and now they have their sights firmly set on 2010 with a new album, a new record label, and an ever expanding sound. Having just signed to Secretly Canadian, the band is targeting Spring of 2010 to release their highly anticipated follow-up to 2009's breakthrough record.

The band have spent much of the year on the road touring with indie giants including Grizzly Bear and are currently supporting The Walkmen before playing Austin City Limits.

Here We Go Magic are also hard at work recording the self-produced sophomore album in a house they've commandeered in upstate New York, and while the first record was the result of Luke Temple getting creative in his bedroom, this release is a fully fledged team effort.

With an eye towards 2010 the band is looking forward to expanding their audience as their unique sound continues to permeate throughout the indie world.

Cymbals Eat Guitars and Freelance Whales in DENVER

To call them multi-instrumentalists might be a little overdone.  The kids in Freelance whales are really just collectors, at heart. They don't really fancy buffalo nickels or Victorian furniture, but over the past two years, they've been collecting instruments, ghost stories, and dream-logs.  Somehow, from this strange compost heap of little sounds and quiet thoughts, songs started to rise up like steam from the ground.

The first performance of these songs took place in January of 2009, in Staten Island's abandoned farm colony, a dilapidated geriatric ward, in one of New York's lesser visited boroughs. A seemingly never-ending jigsaw of small rooms, the farm colony ate them whole and threatened to never regurgitate them. And even though the onlookers were only spiritual presences, the group was still palpably nervous and visibly cold.  After a bit of singing, strumming and stomping asbestos, they realized that they'd found a good crowd.  They heard a bit of clapping from an adjacent room, also some laughing, but not a single soul asked about their record.

Weathervanes, the groups debut LP, finished tracking just a few nights earlier.  Swirling with organic and synthetic textures, interlocking rhythmic patterns, and light harmonic vocals, the record works to tell a simple, pre-adolescent love story: a young male falls in love with the spectral young femme who haunts his childhood home.   He chases her in his dreams but finds her to be mostly elusive.  He imagines her alive, and wonders if someday he'll take on her responsibilities of ghosting, or if maybe he'll join her, elsewhere.

Since their brief residency at the Farm Colony, Freelance Whales have taken to city streets, subway platforms, and stages with their swirling nostalgia.  Many people who found them playing in those public spaces, managed to forget what train they were supposed to take; some of them forgot what language they originally spoke.  And so, after playing in New York City, almost exclusively, for about a year, they embarked on their first tour of the United States, and Canada.  They saw buffaloes posted on hilltops, armies of windmills, and lots of lovely people who let the music run their blood in reverse.

The Infamous Stringdusters Reach New Heights w/ Things That Fly

About the most important question a young bluegrass band faces right out of the gate is whether they can play. The Infamous Stringdusters wasted no time in providing their answer—an emphatic “yes”—winning IBMA Album, Song and Emerging Artist of the Year the very same year they released their debut, Fork In the Road. On Things That Fly, their third album, due out April 20, 2010 on Sugar Hill, they venture into virtually uncharted territory for an acoustic group: a sonically and thematically expansive album that lends itself to absorbed listening from start to finish, much like the great rock albums do.

Holed up in the Charlottesville, Virginia studio Haunted Hollow, with significant preproduction under their belts and Gary Paczosa (Nickel Creek, Dixie Chicks, Tim O’Brien) on board as engineer and co-producer, the ‘Dusters did things they’d never done before: guitarist Andy Falco put his hidden keyboard talents to use on smoldering organ parts; voices and instruments alike were splashed with reverb; and, though the band has no shortage of quality lead singers in fiddler Jeremy Garrett, dobro player Andy Hall and upright bassist Travis Book, a few fine-singing friends—country standout Dierks Bentley, Americana songwriter-chanteuse Sarah Siskind and Crooked Still frontwoman Aoife O’Donovan added novel tones.  All this—and more, much more—makes for a lush, new ‘Dusters experience.

Says Book, “I think string bands have a tendency to feel like when they go to record, doing anything that they can’t necessarily replicate 100 percent live is off-limits. Instead of saying ‘This is how it sounds when the six of us play it standing around in a circle, so we’re just going to put mics up and capture it and that’s going to be it,’ we really got deeper in the production aspect.”

Factor in that every member of the band—rounded out by de facto tour videographer Chris Pandolfi (banjo) and Jesse Cobb (mandolin)—is a stylish, consummate picker with a hardly strictly bluegrass background, as well as a skilled songwriter, and you see that this band is genuinely built for breadth. “We wanted to make sure everyone had writing input on the record,” Hall relates. “We’d never done that before, and it’s a lot of why we started the band.”

Speaking of formidable rock albums, the 'Dusters drew the second track on Things That Fly from U2's Joshua Tree. Not only did they transform "In God's Country" into their own propulsive, virtuosic vehicle, they wrote transcendent anthems in a similar spirit: "Taking a Chance on the Truth" and "Love One Another." Surprising covers, unusual arrangements and other departures from the expected make Things That Fly something different - namely a sign that they've elevated their sound and set their sights higher than ever before.

The Soft Pack Announce US Tour Dates

The Soft Pack is excited to announce a string of US dates to celebrate the release of their self-titled debut album, out February 2nd on Kemado Records. The mini-tour will see the band take the stage with Phoenix, throw an album release party in their hometown San Diego, play select record stores and travel to the East Coast for dates in New York City and Philadelphia. On Friday, February 12th, the band will make their US network television debut with a performance on the Late Show with David Letterman.
Most notably, the band is teaming up with FYF Fest and their infamous vegetable oil-fueled bus for a run 10-shows in Los Angeles on January 30th. The marathon tour will start at 10:30 am and wrap at approximately 1am, with stops including friend’s backyards, record stores, and the beaches of Los Angeles. Fans are invited to meet The Soft Pack at their first location and follow the bus to all ten stops or meet up with the caravan throughout the day.
While The Soft Pack’s debut record isn’t out until February 2nd, they already have critics raving and have been lauded as “ones to watch” in 2010 by the Los Angeles Times, SPIN, Paste, Q, NME and Mojo.

Rogue Wave Release New Single, Unveil Album Details

Now we’re born again,” sings Zach Rogue on the closing track of Rogue Wave’s fourth studio album, Permalight. The dreamy acoustic lament lasts just over a minute but in sound and spirit it neatly sums up everything that comes before it. A punchy, deceptively effervescent set of multi-instrumental pop tunes, the Northern California band’s latest set represents a giant breakthrough for Rogue and his longtime musical partner, drummer-keyboardist- vocalist Pat Spurgeon.
“The record sounds, for lack of a better word, fun,” the frontman says. It’s an astonishing change of direction, to say the least. Formed by Rogue in 2002 after he lost his tech job and parted ways with the Oakland rock group Desoto Reds, Rogue Wave has a reputation for crafting classic, inward-looking pop songs highlighted with psychedelic guitars, pastoral sound effects and intricate rhythms. On tunes from the new album like the title track “Permalight” and “Good Morning,” however, Rogue Wave steps away from expectations. Rogue says the former was written as a left-field sequel to Kool and the Gang’s “Celebration,” with synthesizers that simultaneously sound brittle and blissful. “Stars and Stripes” builds on a deep groove before spilling over in a raging chorus.  Clubby beats are prominent but the album doesn’t sit still for long. “Per Anger” is a straightforward rock tune that takes its cues from Pixies’ loud-quiet-loud dynamic.
Then there’s the album’s unofficial centerpiece, “I’ll Never Leave You,” a simple acoustic tune that finds Rogue coming to grips with the overwhelming emotions that come with young fatherhood. Like many of the songs on the album it’s rooted in Rogue Wave’s triumph over seemingly constant peril -- including the tragic death of a former band mate and constant health issues -- and the band’s undying determination to push forward.  Making this album was no exception.
In September 2008, after the band returned to Oakland following a summer tour, Rogue played a solo show opening for Nada Surf. Two days later, the singer woke up and couldn’t move. There was some concern that he might be having an aneurysm or heart attack, so doctors wheeled an X-ray machine into his living room to check his heart and lungs. It turns out Rogue had slipped two discs in his neck, which were pressing on his spinal cord. “It was the worst pain I had experienced,” he says.
Over the next few months, his condition grew worse until he eventually lost feeling in his right hand. Confined to his bed, there was nothing doctors could do for him, no medications that could relieve his pain. “I just felt like I was being tortured,” Rogue says. “I felt like I was dying.”  In January, the pain began to gradually lift, giving him just enough sensation to pick up the guitar and strum it. He celebrated the recovery the best way he knew, by pouring his relief into new material. “When I started writing I wanted to make a record that was a little more up, a record you could move your body to because I couldn’t move for so long,” Rogue says. “I told Pat I wanted to make a total dance album.”
To do that Rogue decided to make a conscious break from the past. “I decided when I picked up the guitar again I didn’t want to play anything I knew,” he says. “Even if that meant yelling into the microphone or detuning a guitar, I wanted to record all those ideas.”

Backyard Tire Fire To Record w/ Steve Berlin | New Tour Dates

Backyard Tire Fire return to the studio next month to begin work on the follow up to their critically-acclaimed 2008 release, The Places We Lived. They'll be joined by Grammy Award-winning producer Steve Berlin behind the boards. Berlin first discovered Backyard Tire Fire when they opened for his band Los Lobos last October. Backyard Tire Fire's Ed Anderson counted the legendary East Los Angeles group among his biggest influences, so the opportunity to join them on a bill was a career high point. What Anderson didn't expect, however, was that Los Lobos would watch Backyard Tire Fire's entire set from the side of the stage and later invite Anderson and company to sit in for the encore. Berlin was so taken by Backyard Tire Fire's performance that he reached out the following week to inquire about the possibility of producing their next record.

"It takes a pretty special band to rivet the attention of Los Lobos, and Backyard Tire Fire are exactly that," states Berlin. "Great songs, great playing and great guys. I'm really looking forward to the recording sessions. They've come up with another amazing batch of songs. In my opinion they are one of America's best young bands."

Steve Berlin and Backyard Tire Fire will commence recording in late February. Jeff Stuart Saltzman (Death Cab for Cutie, Stephen Malkmus, The Decemberists) will engineer the sessions at Type Foundry Studio in Portland, Oregon where many  of M. Ward's projects have been recorded, including last year's hit, She & Him. As has been Backyard Tire Fire's aesthetic for all of its previous recordings, the sessions will be cut to tape and completely analog.

Backyard Tire Fire's 2008 effort, The Places We Lived fed a growing buzz in the U.S. based around principle songwriter Ed Anderson's ability to combine working class lyrical sentiment with eccentric indie rock songcraft. The album finished on year-end "best of" lists with writers at No Depression, Blurt, Jambase and Glide Magazine. In addition, Sirius XM U has kept "Shoulda Shut It" in regular rotation since early Fall. On the performance front, Backyard Tire Fire toured relentlessly playing both headline dates and opening slots with Reverend Horton Heat, Rose Hill Drive and Squirrel Nut Zippers among others. In February, they'll join JJ Grey & Mofro for a run of shows in the midwest and in March they'll tape their debut appearance on the nationally-syndicated radio show Mountain Stage.

Record Industry Vet Named to Lead Eco Group Rock the Earth

Denver non-profit, Rock the Earth, has announced that they have selected music industry veteran Shawn Kilmurray to serve as its new Executive Director. Together with the support of Rock the Earth's Board of Directors, he will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the organization as well as raising brand profile, diversifying sources of funding and developing strategic alliances. Mr. Kilmurray joins Rock the Earth after nearly two-decades in the recording industry. He has held senior Marketing, Production and Operations roles at Sony BMG, Universal and Warner Music, and is a voting member of numerous industry professional organizations. Active in the music community, Mr. Kilmurray will seek to expand RtE partnerships with artists and other music-related entities. Kilmurray shared "While the record business is currently undergoing tremendous change, a new day has dawned in this country and people recognize what can be accomplished when we work together. My challenge is to create synergistic opportunities to involve artists and the music industry at-large to increase environmental awareness that educates and inspires fans and artists alike to take action and produce quantifiable results on important values-driven environmental issues that directly impact our lives, our children's lives and their children's lives." On the selection of Mr. Kilmurray as Executive Director, John Fleckenstein, Senior Vice President at BMG Label Group notes, "I've had the pleasure of working with Shawn frequently over the years; he's a passionate music guy with deep contacts in the industry.
