Preservation Hall Jazz Band Performs Ballet Score at Lincoln Center This Wednesday

The ever prolific Preservation Hall Jazz Band are on a perpetual quest to bring New Orleans jazz to new places and faces.  This Wednesday August 3rd at NYC’s Lincoln Center, they will reunite with celebrated choreographer Trey McIntyre to perform the live score for two ballets: “Ma Maison” and “The Sweeter End.”  The two creative forces originally came together in 2008 for “Ma Maison,” commissioned by the New Orleans Ballet Association, and performed again last year at The Hollywood Bowl in LA..  Then earlier this year, they reunited to debut a companion piece to that ballet, titled “The Sweeter End.”  This Wednesday’s performance is free and begins at 7:30pm.

Another one of Pres Hall’s long-running collaboration has been with My Morning Jacket, the subject of which is documented in the film Louisiana Fairytale, directed by Danny Clinch.  The piece was shown at SXSW and Bonnaroo this past year and will have upcoming screenings at the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival (Aug 26 – 28th in Birmingham, AL) and at the New Orleans Film Festival (Oct 14 – 20th in New Orleans, LA).  Click HERE to watch the trailer.

Pres Hall’s most recent collaboration has been with Grammy-winning bluegrass icons, the Del McCoury Band, who they will perform with at this year’s Austin City Limits Festival September 17th at 7pm.  The two groups released a joint album earlier this year titled American Legacies, and have been performing together regularly including a spot on the Late Show With David Letterman.  Click HERE to watch their take on “I’ll Fly Away” for the show.

My Morning Jacket Team Up With Todd Haynes for AmEx' "UNSTAGED"

My Morning Jacket is honored to announce they are joining forces with award-winning filmmaker Todd Haynes for the latest edition of “Unstaged: An Original Series from American Express.” In partnership with YouTube and VEVO, “Unstaged” features some of the music industry’s most breakthrough artists playing at landmark venues across the country, while tapping some of today’s most influential filmmakers to direct the live-streams and using digital and social media to connect the online audience to the live shows in unexpected ways. Interactive digital features are set to be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Haynes will film the band’s performance at Louisville’s historic Palace Theater, which will be live-streamed at 9:00pm EST at www.youtube.com/mymorningjacketVEVO on Tuesday May 31st.

Additionally, fans can watch a special video on My Morning Jacket’s upcoming live-stream performance.

This marks the second collaboration between the director and the group, as My Morning Jacket’s Jim James appeared in Haynes’ Academy Award-nominated film I’m Not There.  Previous performers in American Express’ “Unstaged” series  include Arcade Fire directed by Terry Gilliam, John Legend & The Roots directed by Spike Lee, Sugarland directed by Kenny Ortega, and Duran Duran directed by David Lynch.

Jim Lauderdale to Release Reason & Rhyme

Can there be too much of a good thing?  If the question’s about collaboration between American roots music hero Jim Lauderdale and legendary lyricist Robert Hunter, the answer’s an emphatic “no!”  Marking the former’s debut on the respected Sugar Hill records label, Reason And Rhyme makes a compelling case for the continued vitality of the Lauderdale—Hunter partnership—and for Lauderdale’s unique and deeply satisfying approach to bluegrass.

“This one’s back to total bluegrass,” Lauderdale says of the collaborative follow-up to 2010’s electric Patchwork River, and so it’s no surprise that it features many of the musicians involved in previous bluegrass efforts like Could We Get Any Closer (2009) and 2007’s Grammy-winning The Bluegrass Diaries.  The close-knit crew, headed up by producer and resonator guitarist Randy Kohrs, is perfectly in tune with Lauderdale’s ‘grass-with-a-twist' sensibilities, and whether it’s a return buddy like bassist Jay Weaver or new colleague Mike Compton (mandolin), each player delivers mightily with the genre’s characteristic virtuosity and emotional fire.

“We started on this one last August,” Lauderdale notes, “right after I finished touring with Elvis Costello.  Robert and I have worked just about every way you can think of—writing in the same room, adding lyrics to music and music to lyrics—but whichever way we go, he’s the lyrics guy and I’m the music guy.  This time around, we wanted to keep the momentum from Patchwork River going; I started sending him melodies, and ten days later we had 18 songs to choose from.”
The collaboration began over a decade ago, when Lauderdale was preparing for his first joint project with bluegrass patriarch Ralph Stanley, and quickly bore fruit, with more than 30 songs written before the first all-collaborative album, Headed For The Hills (2004).  “I’m not surprised, but I’m always blown away how creative he is lyrically,” says the singer/songwriter, who’s busy enough that finding time to record has always been among his greatest challenges.
With 11 fresh takes on the bluegrass sound that he’s loved since he was a teenager, this latest effort presents Jim Lauderdale at his most relaxed and rooted—and with the help of one of American music’s greatest lyricists, it’s a set that offers not only deep musicality, but deep meaning and vision.  Reason And Rhyme—it’s just the right name for just the right music.

Punch Brothers @ The Boulder Theatre | 2/11/11

"Antifogmatic" is a bit of bygone slang that mandolinist Chris Thile and his bandmates stumbled across, an old term, explains the Punch Brothers founder, for a bracing beverage, rum or whiskey, that one would have in the morning before going out to work in rough weather, to stave off any ill effects." It's an apt title for the Punch Brothers' second Nonesuch disc. This ten-song set of collectively written material takes a clear-eyed view of those things less tangible than booze that can make us woozy: the pleasures and pitfalls of romance, the seemingly limitless possibilities and multifarious temptations of life in the big city.

The arrangements on Antifogmatic range from intimate to boisterous and back; genre-wise, the band once again ventures where no string band has ever gone before. The spare opening track "You Are" contrasts percussive guitar riffs with lyrical string parts that dance around Thile's sweet upper register as he spins a tale of romantic emancipation; occasionally, the other instruments give way to reveal the throb of the bass. The band also engages in some unexpectedly beautiful harmony singing, smoothing out the compelling melodic twists and turns of Welcome Home." "Me and Us" and "Woman and the Bell" both have a dream-like quality; the former, in fact, was inspired by those jumbled, thought-filled moments before sleep sets in, and the instrumentation keeps pace with the ever-shifting imagery. In contrast, "Don't Need No" and "Rye Whiskey" are foot-stomping barroom boasts and "Next to the Trash" is the closest the band gets to traditional bluegrass, even as the lyrics tug the piece in a more surreal direction.

"Our new record is a very pure collaboration," Thile emphasizes. "I would often come to the boys with a start, a little nugget, and we would collectively fashion it into something. None of these songs would have been like themselves if I had been left to my own devices. Several of them were starts that other guys had, and we would build from there. It's fun how liquid the writing process was on this."

The stories the Punch Brothers tell in Antifogmatic-partly autobiographical, partly imagine-were shaped by after-hours camaraderie as much as musical collaboration; they're ultimately about drinking everything in as well as drinking what's in front of them up, though there was plenty of that too. Concludes Thile, "The boys and I would work all day in one of our apartments and then we'd want to go out and have a drink. That's what you do in New York City, because everyone's apartment is too small to hang out comfortably in. We're a group of five guys. If friends start attaching themselves to the fray after that, you forsake the one-bedroom apartment and you go into the incredibly vibrant bar scene that isn't merely an encouragement for intoxication and spending obscene amounts of money per drink. It's really a wonderful way to get to know your fellow man, with your top button unbuttoned and your tie loosened a little bit."

The Attack Cover The Kinks' "Father Christmas"

Hey Scrooges, Grinches and Heat Misers, you don't have to be so pissed off at Christmas anymore. Orlando street-punk heroes The Attack have just released their rendition of The Kinks' classic Christmas tune "Father Christmas." You won't get stockings hung with care or sugar plum faries, it's more like machine guns, unemployment, and youth mobs runamuck through this Dark Christmas Anthem.

"We've always wanted to record this song and finally had an opportunity to do it, and releasing it this year seems appropriate." recalls The Attack's guitarist Brad Palkevich. "The songs content relfects a recession stricken England years ago, not too different from economic crisis going on all over the world today."

The new single was recorded during a quick trip into the studio to record a collaboration track for MC Lars' upcoming album, with help from producer Jami Roebuck in Orlando, and mixed by Tom Petta (Bigwig) at Bivouac Studios in New Jersey.

After a busy year supporting the release of their first album Of Nostalgia and Rebellion, The Attack are playing a handful of Southeast dates to round out the year before completing their next 7" due out Spring 2011.

The Roots Invite Gary Wilson to Play on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

We are all in for an exciting treat, as on October 27th, Gary Wilson will be joining Questlove and The Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon! While you might think of him as the king of weird, there is no denying that Gary Wilson hits home with his honest, sincere, and sometimes even creepy musings on life and love, set to his special mix of funk, avant-garde jazz, and AM Gold inflected tunes. It's no wonder Gary's fan-base includes folks like Beck ("... My man Gary Wilson rocks the most." - Beck on Odelay's "Where It's At") , Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Stones Throws' Peanut Butter Wolf, and The Roots' Questlove. The collaboration of Gary and Questlove will certainly be something exceptional, particularly given that Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is known for its bizarre sketches.

Gary will also be in New York for CMJ, playing October 19th at Cake Shop, following O'Death.

To celebrate his performance on Late Night, along with his CMJ show, Gary is giving fans an Mp3 of "In The Night", off of his anticipated LP release, Electric Endicott.

Electric Endicott is due out digitally on October 26th, with a street date of November 9th, 2010, on Western Vinyl.

30db Releases "One Man Show" Today

30db, the unassuming collaboration between guitarist Brendan Bayliss of the improvisational Chicago band Umphrey’s McGee and mandolinist Jeff Austin of Boulder’s top-flight Americana unit Yonder Mountain String Band, is creating buzz among critics and fans alike. The super group - which also features Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi All Stars), Nick Forster (Hot Rize) and Eric Thorin (Open Road)– is playing select cities this month is support of their new release, One Man Show.

With three shows down (the band performed last week to packed houses in Minneapolis, Madison, and Chicago) and only four more on the books (at least for now), 30db is turning out to be one of the most intriguing collaborations of the season.

A visceral and personal album, 30db’s One Man Show (released May 11, SCI Fidelity Records) is a moving account of busted relationships. Within months of each other, long-time friends and tour mates Jeff Austin and Brendan Bayliss both witnessed the end of long-term relationships. Austin recalls, “Sometimes emotionally and personally, there’s a lot of stuff going on, and we both had that happen at the same time. We started talking pretty often at that point, just to help each other through it, because we were going through the same personal situation. We were both able to understand each other – partners in pain, almost. You go through this heavy stuff, and people say, ‘Oh, I understand,’ but when I reached out to Bayliss, he really understood.”

Working from their shared perspective, the two musicians wrote, edited, and shaped the 14 tracks that make up One Man Show together. By turns affectingly subdued and passionately hard-rocking, One Man Show is an astonishing and unexpected collaboration that covers the musical spectrum.

The Gent Jazz Festival (July7-July18) announces more names for the 2010 edition with Ornette Coleman, Pat Metheny Group, Gilberto Gil, Toots Thielemans, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Mariza, Kurt Elling, The Cinematic Orchestra en Stanley Clarke feat. Hiromi.

Also Christian Mendoza Group, Greg Houben Trio, Pierre Vaiana & Salvatore Bonafede feat. Manolo Cabras, Jungle Boldie will perform at the festival. Thursday July 8 the SABAM Jazz Awards will be presented at the Gent Jazz Festival. The winner in the category Confirmed Artist receives 10.000 Euro. In the category Young Talent, in collaboration with Jeugd & Muziek the winner will receive 5.000 Euro. The intention of this sum is to be used as a financial support for musical projects or to offer a push forward for the expansion of a future career of the musician. Sabam also hands out the Muse of Sabam. This is an additional award that is given to a Belgian jazz personality for his reputation and/or merits or because the artist has taken some successful actions to support the jazz scene.

Also this year the Gent Jazz Festival will organize jam sessions in the evening in collaboration with NH Hoteles. These jam sessions will take place each festival day in the medieval Trova basement of the NH Hotel Gent Belfort and begin at 23h30.  Entrance for free.

The Music competition ‘Young Jazz talent’, an initiative in collaboration with brewery Duvel-Moortgat will take place at the entrance of the Bijloke during the GJF period. The same selected groups will also perform a second time during the Ghent Festivities (July17-July 26).

Tickets cost 29 euros per evening (excl. booking costs), except for those of July 7 (concert day with Norah Jones) which cost 42 euros (excl. booking costs). Earl Greyhound formed in 2002 with the collaboration of songwriters Matt Whyte and Kamara Thomas, who began performing regularly as a duo in NYC. All the while, they were crafting the unique sound and songs that would form the foundation for a colossal rock band. Their influences swept from the strident English three-and four-pieces of the 70’s, to the dark pop and heavy grunge grooves of the 90’s, to the transcendental, noisy acid sounds of modern rock.

In 2005, EG recorded their first album, Soft Targets, but they also hit their first snag when drummer Chris Bear left to pursue his fortunes with the band Grizzly Bear. Reluctant to release the album without a permanent drummer, Matt and Kamara vowed to play relentlessly until their dream drummer found them. Guitar player Kirk Douglass (The Roots) witnessed a show and brought his friend and Gold Crowns band mate Ricc Sheridan to the next few gigs. Ricc says, “I awoke from a dream one night, and I knew this was my band.” A few weeks later, a rockneck-inducing jam confirmed that the band had found its soul mate, and they hit the ground running.  Soft Targets and EG’s wrecking ball of a live show earned them oodles of fans and critical acclaim from The New Yorker, SPIN, Rolling Stone, Brooklyn Vegan and Pitchfork, among others. The next three years were spent touring the US, Canada and Japan as well as opening for Gov’t Mule, Chris Cornell and Saul Williams.


Suspicious Package is Earl Greyhound’s sophomore release. The album marks a turning point in the band’s maturation since the benefit of Mr. Sheridan’s full creative collaboration. Listeners will notice a marked expansion into the higher reaches of the sonic territories. Heavy, dark, groovy and grand—Suspicious Package is a reminder that though ROCK is still only a four-letter word, it can still pack a load of splendor.
