Coincidentally, these freshly announced dates happen to follow the release of their sophomore full-length, Not Yet, out January 25th on Drag City.  Funny how that happens, no? Badly Drawn Boy Touring North America Next Month

BADLY DRAWN BOY, aka Damon Gough, is giving away album track "This Electric" along with the remixes by Beats For Beginners and El Diablo's Social Club for the price of an email. Badly Drawn Boy is touring North America next month.
The two-week run will kick off in Boston on December 1st and wraps up with a two-night stand at Los Angeles’ Troubadour. Full tour dates are listed below. Penning the soundtrack to last year’s Caroline Aherne film The Fattest Man in Britain sparked a period of unprecedented creativity for Gough, resulting in a wealth of great new songs. Gough decided the best way to capture this surge, and give the songs the exposure they deserved was to release a trilogy of albums. The trilogy is called ‘It’s What I’m Thinking’ and ‘Part 1 – Photographing Snowflakes’ is in stores now. Watch the video for "Too Many Miracles."

Shadow Shadow Shade Release White Horse Trilogy & Debut Album

Los Angeles’ majestic septet Shadow Shadow Shade (formerly known as Afternoons) are prepping the release of their eagerly awaited, self-titled debut release.  Those who have seen their acclaimed live show know what to expect:  a lush sound that is both grand in spectacle and remarkably intimate.  With seven members that often sing in unison, the group’s haunting melodies sculpt an ethereal, choir-like effect.  Shadow Shadow Shade will be released on October 5th through the group’s own label, Public Records.  It will be available via Junket Boy and at CIMS stores nationwide as well as select additional indie outlets.  It was produced by Grammy-winning Producer/Mixer/Engineer/Musician and SSS member, Tom Biller (Karen O, Liars, Jon Brion, Sean Lennon, Kanye West).

Before the album is released the band is unveiling the three-part epic, post-apocalyptic short film known as the White Horse Trilogy that features several of their songs.  The clip stars Jason Ritter (of NBC’s upcoming drama “The Event”) and Anna WilsonWhite Horse’s director Michael Graham describes it as “an existential science fiction film that personifies and investigates the inner struggle one might go through under the distress of being ripped apart from their lover by the current world they live in, most importantly - war.”  The film is set in the future during World War III, when an unknown force has enslaved the human race.

SSS began as an art project amongst likeminded friends before evolving into an actual band that performed and recorded.  Upon hearing their demos, artist Shepard Fairey became one of the band’s early supporters  He soon designed posters for them that ended up getting plastered all over their hometown of LA.  After playing just one show, the group was offered the coveted residency at Spaceland and subsequently sold out all four weeks – this led to the SSS being invited to perform at IFC’s 2010 SXSW Showcase.

The group has created a stirring pastiche of sounds that takes cues from traditions such as psychedelia, orchestral music, shoegaze, opera, and indie rock among others.  Their enigmatic lyrics seem to have been plucked from a classic, timeless novel that hasn’t been written yet, and every song they compose builds towards a thrilling catharsis.  Click HERE to stream/download the mp3 for the album’s first single, “Say Yes.”

Shadow Shadow Shade Tour Dates:

10/8 - Santa Cruz, CA @ Rio Theater
10/10 - Portland, OR @Mississippi Studios
10/11 - Seattle, WA @ The High Dive
10/13 - San Francisco, CA @ Red Devil Lounge
10/14 - Los Angeles, CA @ Echoplex
10/15 - San Diego, CA @ Soda Bar

Local Natives at the Fox, Tues Sept 28

Local Natives make soaring, sky-scraping harmonies, dreamy orchestral melodies, and throbbing tribal beats that bash their way into your soul. Theirs are songs you can dance to almost as well as you can swoon to them. Drawing a line from the vocal stylings of Crosby Stills Nash & Young and the Zombies through the more esoteric edges of post-punk and Afro-beat, this California five piece have communally crafted a brand of indie rock all their own. The band’s sound has been described as “afropop-influenced guitars with hyperactive drumming and hooky three-part harmonies”.

For Local Natives everything is a collaboration, from song writing duties to the band’s self produced artwork. The three part harmonies come courtesy of keyboardist Kelcey Ayer, guitarists Ryan Hahn and Taylor Rice. Then there’s Matt Frazier on drums and Andy Hamm on bass, who look after the band’s equally impressive graphics and artwork. One of SXSW 2009’s biggest success stories, the band drove for two days to get from Los Angeles to Austin in order to play nine spectacular shows that saw them sprinting, instruments in hand, from one gig to the next. Their hectic schedule paid off as Local Natives left Austin with the attention of the UK music Industry.

Based in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles, three of the five-piece originally hail from Orange County. Kelcey, Ryan and Taylor attended neighbouring high schools and hooked up with bassist Andy a year after they graduated, later meeting drummer Matt. They’ve been playing – and evolving - together for three years. Last year, however, the band realized that the new songs they were writing were the sounds of a new project entirely. Their debut album as Local Natives, “Gorilla Manor”, was released in the UK on Nov 2nd, 2009, and saw a US release date of Feb. 16th, 2010.I nitial reviews of Local Natives have drawn favourable comparisons to Arcade Fire, Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend.

NATIONWIDE BENEFIT CONCERTS for the Fishermen & Wildlife affected by the Gulf Coast Oil Spill

On July 1st, 2010, a nationwide effort on behalf of independent club's will take place to benefit those directly affected by the Gulf Coast Oil Spill. We are all aware of the severity of this tragedy to the region and the global ecosystem.  What many are unaware of, as the oil continues to gush, the  Gulf Coast communities are quickly being devastated. The local and global economy will suffer irreparable damage that will last for many years to come. The ramifications will be that many families will not be able to survive financially in the very near future (http://www.dirtycajuns.com) : (http://tinyurl.com/2g487xj).

In addition to the dire situation facing the wetlands we have many people in our own back yard needing assistance. In the spirit of Independence Day, indie venues across the US are donating a % of of door revenues or ticket sales to the fishermen of the Gulf Coast and the clean up efforts. Many of our fellow Americans in the foreseeable  future will have no livelihood, are preparing to leave their homes, and are now lining up for food handouts. With hurricane season on the horizon there is reason for great concern. We've learned how essential it is to be prepared for the worst.

The funds will dispersed directly to the people in need through charity organizations directly aiding fishermen & their families, as well as those associated with wildlife relief efforts.

In conjunction with the events of July 1st, Coast to Coast will also be unifying a collective social media outreach campaign, which will be lead by Sloane Berrent (http://answerwithaction.com)

This is an opportunity for us to save lives and make a difference in an unnatural disaster of epic proportions where many want to get involved but don't know how. This is the way the music industry can help. No agenda other than working together for a common cause to raise monies and directly help the communities and support the efforts to save the wetlands and native species of the Gulf Coast.

The following venues will be participating:

Los Lobos Announces 2010 Summer Tour Plans

Los Lobos, the Grammy-winning East L.A. band, is on tour this summer in support of a brand new studio album. The new release, titled Tin Can Trust will hit streets on August 3, 2010. The band’s summer schedule brings them coast to coast, including a run of select shows with John Hiatt & The Combo. A complete list of currently confirmed dates is included below.

With Tin Can Trust—Los Lobos’ first release for Shout! Factory and first collection of new original material in four years— the venerable quintet once again redefines itself and expands its scope, while never losing sight of where they come from. And, like so much of Los Lobos’ previous work, Tin Can Trust is an album that speaks to the time and place in which it was conceived; the album’s title can be traced back more than a century, but for the band, it’s apt for the rickety state in which so many of us find ourselves—and our world—today.

The 11 tracks on Tin Can Trust offer the perfect balance of Los Lobos’ parts: the band’s lineup has remained uninterrupted since 1984, when saxophonist/keyboardist Steve Berlin joined original members Louie Pérez (guitar, drums, vocals), David Hidalgo (guitar, violin, accordion, percussion, vocals), Cesar Rosas (guitar, vocals) and Conrad Lozano (bass, vocals), each of whom had been there since the beginning in 1973.

Seven songs on the album are distinguished and genius Hidalgo-Pérez collaborations, including the opening track “I’ll Burn It Down,” which features a guest vocal harmony from blues-rocker Susan Tedeschi. Three others were written in whole or in part by Rosas – including the album’s two Spanish-language numbers: the cumbia “Yo Canto” and the norteño “Mujer Ingrata” – and display Los Lobos’ signature seamless infusion of Mexican folk songs into rock music. Also included in Tin Can Trust – a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “West L.A. Fadeaway” – offering a nod to the bands’ shared history that extends back into the 1980s when the Angelenos befriended and opened shows for their northern peers.

As with every new recording Los Lobos makes, Tin Can Trust moves Los Lobos into yet another new dimension while simultaneously sounding like no one else in the world but Los Lobos. Los Lobos’ unified vision and strong work ethic are evident throughout the self-produced album, but so is something even greater: “an intuitiveness,” says Los Lobos songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Louie Pérez, “that happens only from being in a band for so long.” As Rolling Stone once wrote, “This is what happens when five guys create a magical sound, then stick together for 30 years to see how far it can take them.”

Otis Redding's 2-CD 'Live on the Sunset Strip'

In 1966, Otis Redding had emerged not only as the star of Stax Records but as one of nation’s most influential soul singers. With his version of “Satisfaction” climbing the charts in April 1966, Redding arrived in Los Angeles to play both the Hollywood Bowl (as part of a KHJ-AM listener appreciation concert that also featured Donovan, Sonny & Cher and the Mamas & the Papas) and a four-nighter at the legendary Whisky A Go Go on the Sunset Strip. According to Taj Mahal, whose ’60s band the Rising Sons opened the Whisky shows, “At that time, Otis was it.”

Live on the Sunset Strip, slated for May 18, 2010 release on Stax Records through Concord Music Group, captures Redding in the white heat of transition, when his star power was undeniable and it was still possible to catch him backed by his own road band in the tight quarters of a smoky nightclub. The 2-CD set features three full live sets that have never been previously available in their entirety. A definitive live statement from Redding, the songs are sequenced exactly as they went down, complete with an emcee and spoken introductions by Redding. The booklet features rare photographs as well as extensive liner notes by Ashley Kahn, author of music biographies and a contributor to NPR’s Morning Edition.

Live on the Sunset Strip highlights versions of Redding’s best-known songs: “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” “Security,” “I Can’t Turn You Loose,” “Satisfaction,” “Respect,” “These Arms of Mine” and “Just One More Day,” to name a few.

As Kahn points out in his notes, “In 1966, Redding was 24 and defined not only the sound but the style and look of a true soul man. Tall and lanky, he was ready to drop to his knees and tear off the thin-lapelled jacket of his sharply pressed suit when it was time to deliver the goods. His ten-piece band was his personal, traveling amen-corner, urging him to testify night after night . . . His out-of-breath stage patter was warm and downhome. ‘Ladies and gentlemens,’ he addressed his fans, ‘holler as loud as you wanna — you ain’t home!’”

The Whisky A Go Go was known for its integrated booking policy and for helping bring awareness of R&B and blues to rock audiences, who attended shows by the Doors, Love, and the Standells at the venue. On April 7-10, the club booked the Otis Redding Revue for the Easter weekend that followed the Hollywood Bowl appearance. Redding’s entourage included an emcee and a full 10-piece band (led by saxophonist Bob Holloway) along with three up-and-coming singers performing one tune apiece before the headliner hit the stage. Engineer Wally Heider, the West Coast’s leading recorder of live performances, was hired to tape the three nights.

The shows did not go unnoticed by the Los Angeles Times, which noted: “Drawn by his growing popularity, a fervid audience shoe-horned into the club . . . Redding was assured of an In Group [sic] following Thursday night when from among his spectators emerged Bob Dylan, trailed by an entourage of camp followers.” (Legend holds that Dylan offered him “Just Like a Woman” as a possible cover that night, though Redding thought the song was a little wordy.)

Redding achieved even greater heights in the months after the Whisky performances, chalking up two new hits (“Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa [Sad Song]” and “Try a Little Tenderness”). He played San Francisco’s Fillmore Auditorium, took part in the Stax/Volt Revue through Europe in March ’67 and stole the show at the historic Monterey International Pop Festival in June of that year. The ultimate tragedy happened on December 10, 1967, when, as eloquently stated by Kahn, “his death in an airplane crash . . . dramatically froze his star forever in its perfect, meteoric apogee.”

In 1968, Stax posthumously issued the LP In Person at the Whisky A Go Go, with liner notes by Los Angeles Times critic Pete Johnson, who’d also reviewed the live show. In 1993, the CD Good to Me: Recorded Live at the Whisky, Vol. 2 expanded on a largely forgotten 1982 LP, Recorded Live. While those releases juggled selections from different shows, Live on the Sunset Strip stands out as a historically true document, offering the last three consecutive sets capturing Redding and his band in top form.

“I’m still real clear about those shows,” recalls Taj Mahal, whose Rising Sons opened them. “It was raw and unscripted. It was just the joy of music, you know. The joy of rhythm, the joy of energy. . .”
