First Aid Kit: Jack White-Produced Third Man Records Blue Series

Rising Swedish folk-pop duo First Aid Kit are among the latest artists to take part in Third Man Records' Blue Series of releases. The special series of 7-inch records, produced by Jack White and recorded at his own Third Man Studios in Nashville, has featured releases from Wanda Jackson, Laura Marling and Secret Sisters, among others.

For their Blue Series 7-inch, First Aid Kit recorded spine-tingling covers of Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Universal Soldier" (made famous in 1965 by Donovan) and classic blues standard "It Hurts Me Too", a song much loved by fans of Karen Dalton's 1969 folk-blues version. First Aid Kit, comprised of 17 and 20-year old sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg, recorded the tracks with White during the Nashville stop on their US headlining tour in October. Joshua Hedley joins the duo on fiddle for both tracks, while touring drummer Mattias Bergqvist, their father Benkt Söderberg, and Jack Lawrence (The Greenhornes, The Raconteurs), also contribute additional instrumentation on "It Hurts Me Too." First Aid Kit won international acclaim this year for their stunning debut full-length album The Big Black And The Blue (Wichita Recordings).

G. Love To Release New Album Produced By The Avett Brothers

G. Love's new album, Fixin’ To Die, is set for release on February 22nd on Brushfire Records. Recorded at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC, and produced by Scott and Seth Avett (The Avett Brothers), this new body of work is arguably G. Love’s most sincere and candid work to date. After a chance meeting in Boston last fall, G. Love and The Avett Brothers forged a friendship and bonded over their love of back road blues.  After performing together onstage and discovering their shared musical heritage, G. Love invited Scott and Seth Avett to not only produce his new album, but perform on it as well.
The result is Fixin’ To Die, a collection of G. Love originals, rearranged traditionals, and a classic cover, many simmering for over a decade, all sharing a common goal: to strip away all pretense and capture the original spirit and sound G. Love has cultivated over his entire career but never fully embraced until now. From the ragged jangle of its opener “Milk & Sugar” and floorboard stomp of Bukka White’sFixin’ To Die,” over the loping lilt of “Home” and longing for “Katie Miss,” through the greasy fried “Get Goin’” and moonshine reverb of “Heaven,” to the hip shake hootenanny in Paul Simon’s infamous kiss off “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” G. Love and The Avetts deliver a life lesson in how to find a song’s sweet spot.
It was an emotional recording session and I was truly blown away by the level of focus, care and passion Scott & Seth brought to it.  It was a tremendously positive and encouraging experience. This is the most inspired I’ve ever felt making a record,” G. Love said.
As Scott Avett says, “There’s a little bit of this record on all the previous G. Love records, you just had to look for it. This is the record we all knew he should make and he could make, but again, he had to open himself to the core to make it. That’s the difference.”
G. Love will tour the U.S. extensively in support of Fixin’ To Die in 2011.

Jump, Jive, an' Wail is Stand-Out on Live Brian Setzer DVD

"Jump, Jive, an' Wail" from the Brian Setzer Orchestra's 'It’s Gonna Rock... 'Cause That’s What I Do' DVD, out now from Surfdog Records, got 150,000 people out of their seats when it was recorded during a headlining BSO set at the Montreal Jazz Festival.

The song, a 1956 hit for Louis Prima, has been in the BSO repertoire since 1998, when it earned a Grammy® Award for Best Pop Performance. The version on the DVD features a stinging Gretsch guitar solo by Setzer, high-energy bursts from his leopard-print tuxedo-clad horn section and his sequined backup singers, and 300,000 waving arms.

Brian Setzer's "Christmas Comes Alive!" CD is also out from Surfdog Records now. A collection of 15 amazing holiday tracks performed live in concert as only the Brian Setzer Orchestra can do it, the single-disc offering is packed with music that is, according to Billboard, "guaranteed to get your Christmas party on its feet!"

Pepper New 3D Video for "Drunk Girl" Single

This week, Hawaii's reggae-punk heroes Pepper, are celebrating the release of their new, self-produced, Stitches EP out everywhere through the band's own LAW Records imprint. Mastered at Bernie Grundman Mastering by Brian "Big Bass Brian" Gardner (Blink 182, Foo Fighters, Jane's Addiction) and recorded at Total Access Studios in Los Angeles (Sublime, No Doubt, Pennywise), Stitches features two new tracks, "Wake Up" and "Drunk Girl," currently seeing heavy rotation around the country at stations such as San Diego's 91X (XTRA), San Francisco's Live 105 (KITS) and West Palm Beach's The Buzz 103 (WPBZ). Stitches also features the new track "Lonely" written and originally performed by friend Mishka Frith (support Boulder-Portland).

Always at the forefront of technology (see also the band's recent Q&A with fans via social network / online broadcast site UStream), Pepper have just completed the production of a hi-tech, one-of-a-kind new video for the EP's single, "Drunk Girl," filmed live on location at The Grove in Anaheim (also the band's recent tour kick-off event) set to premiere worldwide in the coming weeks (fans can get their hands on 3D glasses through the band's website - more details on the premiere of the 3D "Drunk Girl" video coming soon! About Pepper:

PEPPER, comprised of guitarist/vocalist Kaleo Wassman, bassist/vocalist Bret Bollinger and drummer Yesod Williams, formed in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii in 1997. Having grown up surfing on the island, it’s not a wonder that they would mix their rock “shock and ah” flare, along with their mellow island rhythm roots to create their own truly diverse sound. They have also been known to hypnotize fans of all walks of life with their incredibly sweet harmonies all the while keeping bodies moving on the dance floor. The trio played mostly house parties and garages before finally shipping out to San Diego, CA in 1999 to push their first studio release Give’n It.

In 2001, they entered the Volcom warehouse studio with Steve Kravac (Blink 182, Less Than Jake, MxPx) to record Kona Town, which included the hit single “Give it Up (Dirty Hot Sex)” - which has become one of KROQ’s most played songs to date. On the heels of that success, PEPPER retreated into The Hive, a completely analog studio and home of 311, with legendary producer Ron “The Saint” St. Germain (Bad Brains, Living Colour, 311, Tool, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden) to record In With the Old. When the dust settled from the flurry of large-scale tours, the band recorded the expansive No Shame (originally released by Warner Bros.), which featured a slew of exciting producers including 311’s Nick Hexum, No Doubt’s bassist Tony Kanal and current partner in crime Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers.

PEPPER has sold over half a million records independently and founded their own record label, LAW Records - through which three other artists’ music is distributed: IRATION, Passafire, and The Supervillians. Their music has appeared in many movies (including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Good Luck Chuck), television shows and video game soundtracks as well as having had a number of album tracks appear on Billboard’s “Alternative Songs” chart (including No Shame’s “No Control,” which peaked at 18, and “Give It Up” which peaked at 34). Their song “Your Face,” also from No Shame, is now available for Guitar Hero World Tour.

The band has also amassed a large and loyal following stemming from their non-stop touring which includes numerous rounds on the Vans Warped Tour and outings with reggae legends The Wailers, 311 and Snoop Dogg, to name a few. PEPPER has performed at several festivals including Lollapolooza, Mile High Festival, West Beach Music Festival, as well as many others. In 2008, PEPPER made the rounds through Europe twice alongside Flogging Molly in the spring and Less Than Jake in the fall. They spent their summer of that year celebrating the July release of PINK CRUSTACEANS AND GOOD VIBRATIONS, which peaked at number 11 on Billboard’s “Independent Albums” chart, by hitting up US amphitheatres with longtime friends Slightly Stoopid, and headlined the very first “Here Comes the LAW Tour” - which featured other Law Records artists, The Supervillains and Passafire. The madness continued through the spring of 2009 when PEPPER ventured out for the second time co-headlining the Jagermeister Music Tour with punk rock legends, Pennywise. In the Fall, PEPPER took the party to the streets of Los Angeles playing the second annual Sunset Strip Music Festival with rock legend Ozzy Osbourne.

After spending the early months of 2010 writing and recording new music, PEPPER spent their summer on the annual Unity Tour with long time friends 311, and The Offspring. They played twenty-five big dates including several amphitheaters and arenas. Between Unity Tour, new music, a single, “Wake Up” accompanied by a B side, ”Mirror,” which were released this past July, and plans for a 45+ major market national headlining tour this fall in support of the forthcoming release of their Sitches EP due out Oct 12, 2010, PEPPER fans are sure to get the fix they’ve been craving since 2009!

Slightly Stoopid Perform at Austin City Limits

After a long run on their hugely successful and critically acclaimed Cauzin' Vapors... Legalize It 2010 US amphitheater tour with Cypress Hill, Steel Pulse, and Collie Buddz (where the band performed to anywhere from 5,000 - 20,000 of their most loyal fans), San Diego-based dub/rock/psychedelic-jam phenoms Slightly Stoopid are gearing up to perform at this year's renowned Austin City Limits festival in Austin, TX. Sharing the stage with some of the biggest names around, the band will perform alongside the likes of The Eagles, Phish, Muse, The Strokes, Norah Jones and more. Joining Slightly Stoopid on stage at this year's festival will be funky sax man Karl Denson (from Karl Denson's Tiny Universe / The Greyboy Allstars).

The band has also just announced that they've spent the past few months collaborating in their band-built home studio (equipped with video game room and skate ramp) with the likes of Cypress Hill, G Love, Barrington Levy, The Neville Brothers and more, all in preparation for their upcoming and brand new full-length release due Summer 2011. The band is also planning the upcoming remix of hit song "No Cocaine" (from the band's celebrated 2008 album Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid), featuring legendary reggae star Capleton, set for release November 2 on Hi Grade Ganja Anthems 3.

Slightly Stoopid have recently logged some serious road miles as part of their annual Summer Amphitheater Tours. Since 2007, they have recruited Snoop Dogg, Stephen Marley, G. Love, Sly & Robbie and more on their colossal summer packages, and the band spent the past few months performing at some of the biggest festivals in the country, including dates at Lollapalooza, Denver's Mile High Festival, Outside Lands, the Blackwater Music Festival, Harmony Festival, New Orleans Jazz Fest and more!

The Slightly Stoopid story can be traced to Ocean Beach, California, when childhood chums Miles and Kyle formed the group in 1995, mixing reggae and punk sounds into one smooth stylistic cocktail. Soon after, late/great Sublime frontman Brad Nowell caught wind of the group, and signed them to his Skunk Records label – while the band members were still in high school. A pair of releases soon followed for Skunk - 1996's punk-tinged SLIGHTLY STOOPID (featuring a guest appearance by Nowell on the song “Prophet” - later covered by Sublime and released on their box set, EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN) and 1998's surf-inspired cult classic THE LONGEST BARREL RIDE. Most recently, the band has continued their mainstream successes, seeing their last two albums, 2007's CHRONCHITIS, (which featured guest appearances by Guru of Gang Starr, Angelo Moore of Fishbone, Money Mark of the Beastie Boys and G. Love) and 2008's SLIGHTLY NOT STONED ENOUGH TO EAT BREAKFAST YET STOOPID, charting in the Billboard Top 100, with both albums appearing on the band's own Stoopid Records.

To date, the band has sold over 750,000 records on their own label, has performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and has had their songs appear on hit television series' Scrubs, The O.C., Cribs, and more. CHARLIE MARS - AUSTIN CITY LIMITS MUSIC FESTIVAL - 10/8/10

Acclaimed singer/songwriter Charlie Mars will be performing at the Austin City Limits Music Festival on Friday, October 8th @ 12:20 PM.  Charlie has been on tour in support of his current CD, "Like A Bird, Like A Plane."

While in town for the festival, he’ll be doing a short live set for KGSR on Thursday, October 7th at Threadgills.  The station will be doing a live broadcast from the venue at 8:30am.  Then he'll perform at the Austin Ventures Stage at ACL on Friday, October 8th at 12:20pm, followed by a Waterloo Records signing.  Charlie will then be doing a solo show from 3:15pm to 3:30pm on the Austin Kiddie Limits Stage. And on Saturday, October 9th, he'll  top it off with a show at Threadgills at 10pm.

Mars is known for his compelling live performances.  “When he’s onstage, songs with deep grooves get some breathing room, and his lush choruses inevitably lead to raucous audience sing-alongs,” said Esquire.

Mars recorded the album in Austin with drummer J.J. Johnson (John Mayer), keyboardist John Ginty (Citizen Cope) and bass players George Reiff (Jakob Dylan) and Dave Monzie (Fiona Apple). The video for lead single “Listen to the Darkside” (a nod to Pink Floyd) featured “Weeds” star Mary Louise Parker and was directed by Danny Clinch.

"Like A Bird, Like A Plane," was praised by The Washington Post for its "lush musical vignettes" while Jambase called it "a fine addition to the canon of one of the South's most under appreciated songwriters." "Charlie's sultry alternative-southern-soul mastery sounds like what the lead singers for Coldplay or The Verve might sound like if they grew up in the south listening to REM and Nick Drake," said Jackson Free Press and the Pittsburgh Tribune called the album "mesmerizing."  "Mars combines the lyrical, melodic, and rhythmic gifts of Paul Simon with the dark, rootsy quality of Bruce Springsteen," said Berkshire Living.

Born in Arkansas and raised in Mississippi, Mars released three independent albums before signing with V2. His self-titled, 2004 major label debut was hailed by Rolling Stone as "Big emotional rock from Mississippi with a knack for hooks, and the hooks here have real barbs: They tug at you and just might draw some blood." High profile tours with artists such as R.E.M., KT Tunstall, Citizen Cope, John Butler Trio and Bob Schneider followed. When V2 folded, Mars returned to his independent roots, financing "Like A Bird, Like A Plane" himself, and releasing it on Rockingham Records in conjunction with the Nashville-based Thirty Tigers.

Urge Overkill Return With First New Song in 15 Years

Celebrated alternative rock favorites Urge Overkill are officially back together 15 years after the release of their last album.  The band released its first full-length, the Steve Albini-produced Jesus Urge Superstar, in 1989 through Touch and Go Records and steadily began ascending in popularity.  By the early 90’s, they were opening for Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and eventually signed to Geffen Records, who releasedtheir beloved classic LP, Saturation.  The group’s biggest moment in the spotlight came when Quentin Tarantino prominently used their cover of Neil Diamond’s“Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” in his film Pulp Fiction.  The soundtrack soon became one of the most acclaimed and successful of the decade and Urge’s version of “Girl” became a hit.

The reformed band is made up of original singer/guitarists Nash Kato and Eddie “King” Roeser, along with drummer Brian “Bon” Quast (also in Polvo) and bassist Mike “Hadji” Hogkiss,.”  They are currently writing and recording new music in their hometown of Chicago, and will be performing at the Samuel L. Jackson-hosted Friar’s Club Roast of Quentin Tarantino on October 1st.

Legendary Reggae Band The Wailers Contribute Exclusive Studio Track

Oniric Records is proud to announce that legendary reggae band The Wailers, have contributed an exclusive new track titled “A Step for Mankind” to Solution for Dreamers: Season 3, a compilation CD to be released this month. This compilation CD is the third in the “Solutions for Dreamers” series, with this disc created to support the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP).  This is the first studio track from the Wailers in 16 years.
The Wailers “A Step for Mankind” track is exclusively recorded for Solutions for Dreamers: Season 3, written by the remarkable singer/songwriter Duane Stephenson and features hip-hop artist Bishop Lamont.  A songwriter renowned for his portrayal of love, culture and spirituality, Stephenson is well-known for many incredible reggae songs, most notably for his work on Jah Cure’s reggae anthem “True Reflections.” Lamont, an up-and-coming rapper and Dr. Dre protégé known for his hit radio single “Grow Up,” contributes an unforgettable flow in the track’s breakdown. The World Food Programme is the world’s largest organization fighting hunger globally.  WFP is committed to getting food to where it is needed, and saving the lives of victims of war, civil conflict and natural disasters.  Each year, on average, WFP feeds more than 90 million people in more than 70 countries. My Morning Jacket's Carl Broemel to Release Solo Album

“It takes a lot of time to know your mind.”  Its a simple statement, yet earnest and profound in its offering.  Sometimes it’s the spaces in between, the subtleties and ambiguities that provide us with the most meaning.
 All Birds Say (ATO Records) is an intimate collection of musings on life from My Morning Jacket guitarist, Carl Broemel.

 Broemel reflects on things as they are with Zen-like contentment, making no judgment on how they should be...he gives pause for introspection but stops short of preaching. The songs are firmly planted between past and present.  It’s in these little fractured moments that the listener bears witness to thoughtful contemplation that give rise to epiphanies on larger themes.

Broemel could’ve taken the easy road and penned a lyrical triptych to the remarkable journey he’s experienced over the past several years, but instead All Birds Say is an incredibly honest and sincere insight into the artist’s inner-most thoughts as he attempts to reconcile his role in life.
 “Where do you start?  Or where do you stop?  And how do you reconcile the things you do versus the things you don’t?  It’s something I’m constantly thinking about.  I think there’s a lot of trying to be aware of what you’re doing now versus dwelling on things or worrying about what’s gonna happen later.  A lot of the songs are really just me talking to myself, trying to make sense of things in my head.”

Deft in its presentation, the songs on the album unfold in a dream-like stream of consciousness with lush and elegant arrangements.  The album’s brilliance is displayed in Broemel’s effortless delivery.  It’s the perfect amalgamation of lazy sophistication…whimsical poise and grace.  The instrumentation serves as the ideal complement to Broemel’s well crafted set of modern-folk standards; complete with pedal steel, dobro, strings, autoharp, clarinet, bassoon, vibraphone, and baritone sax, among others.  Think Ron Sexsmith, Neko Case, Neal Casal, Andrew Bird, Mose Allison, and early Boz Scaggs singing an orchestrated chorus of breezy ballads and waltzes.

The guitar figure of the instrumental title track that opens the album serves as a natural introduction to “Life Leftover,” an introspective meditation on the importance of being more present in life that’s at the heart of All Birds Say.  The album also afforded him the chance to collaborate with his own father, a former member of the Indianapolis Symphony who provides rich color and depth to the music with clarinet, baritone sax, and bassoon.

“To me, making records is like alchemy.  It’s something that no one can ever perfect, but you have an insatiable desire to keep doing it and get better at it.  I really believe that everything we experience contributes to what we do next, so this album is really a result of all the records and tours I’ve done so far.“
