John McLaughlin at the Boulder Theater - 12.04

Fiery yet disarmingly open-hearted, the new album from John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension, To The One, bravely takes on the artistic and spiritual challenges first offered by Coltrane’s jazz masterpiece A Love Supreme, while making extensive use of the pioneering musical and technical vocabulary that McLaughlin has honed since the beginning of his storied career.

Available via Abstract Logix on April 20, 2010, To The One is the result of a burst of inspiration that struck the legendary English guitarist and composer in summer of 2009. “This music started to come to me,” McLaughlin explains, “without any call from my part. The sound and feel of this new music took me back to 1965, to when I first heard A Love Supreme. I was 23 years old at that time, and struggling with questions of existence that we all confront sooner or later. Some of us discard them or don’t bother to delve deeper, but that’s not my nature. I was asking big questions: What is the meaning of life? What is this word ‘god’? What is this spirit? It was then that Coltrane came along and single-handedly brought this dimension of spirituality into jazz…it was a pivotal experience to me. It was so encouraging to me in both my musical and spiritual quests. To The One, as an album, is about those two aspects of my life – music and spirituality – crystallized by this recording of Coltrane’s, and how A Love Supreme coincided with my search for meaning in life.”

It is a search that he never surrendered, as McLaughlin’s musical journey took him from session work and jazz sessions in the UK to recording and performing in America with the likes of Tony Williams and Miles Davis, through to the founding of the incredibly influential exploratory fusion outfit the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Shakti, his ensemble dedicated to exploring Indian music and spirituality. Over the past three decades, McLaughlin has continually sought out bold new contexts for his expressive and inventive playing.

The six original compositions on To The One were mostly written in July and August of 2009, and set down in the studio in November and December, with very few overdubs, by McLaughlin’s current performing outfit, the Fourth Dimension: Gary Husband (keyboards, drums), Etienne M’Bappe (electric bass), and Mark Mondesir (drums). Compositional devices clearly inspired by Coltrane are fused with elements of McLaughlin’s own multi-faceted approach, all delivered with a group empathy and shared vision that harkens back to Coltrane’s fearless mid-‘60s quartet of Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, and Jimmy Garrison. The effect of Jones’ kaleidoscopic approach to rhythm and drumming is especially felt, brilliantly recast and explored via McLaughlin’s gift for complex metrical structures.

From the surging opener “Discovery” to the gently propulsive title track which closes the compact, forty-minute program, McLaughlin’s own playing is at its very peak: emotional and probing, exploding into flourishes of rapid-fire sixteenth notes one moment, candid and unguardedly vulnerable the next. “For the band to play my tunes is a challenge,” McLaughlin explains, “and in return, I want them to challenge me. This is part of what jazz is – it’s very interactive. You play with the musicians. You’re not just playing the notes.

B.B. King at the Boulder Theater - Jan. 22nd

Since the 1950’s, there has been only one King of the Blues – Riley B. King, affectionately known as B.B. King.  Since B.B. started recording in the late 1940’s, he has released over 50 albums many of them considered blues classics, like 1965’s definitive live blues album “Live At The Regal,” and 1976’s collaboration with Bobby “Blue” Bland, “Together For The First Time.” In 2008, B.B. King released his Grammy winning “One Kind Favor” featuring one of his personal favorites, “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean” with Lemon Jefferson.

B.B. has mixed traditional blues, jazz, swing, mainstream pop and jump into a unique sound.  His singing is richly melodic, both vocally and in the “singing” that comes from his guitar.  In B.B.’s words, “When I sing, I play in my mind; the minute I stop singing orally, I start to sing by playing Lucille.”

Riley B. King was born on September 16, 1925, on a cotton plantation in Itta Bene, Mississippi outside the Mississippi delta town of Indianola.  He used to play on the corner of Church and Second Street for dimes and would play in as many as four towns on a Saturday night.  With his guitar and $2.50, he hitchhiked north to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1947 to pursue his musical career.  Memphis was the city where every important musician of the South gravitated and which supported a large, competitive musical community where virtually every black musical style was heard.

Brandon Adams & Jimmy Dasher Team Up for National Tour

Music fans will get a taste of exciting sounds to come on CD when Melodic Undertone recording artists Brandon Adams & The Sad Bastards and Jimmy Dasher hit the cross-country road this fall as a special two-for-one package. Rather than wait for Adams’ self-titled album and Dasher’s THE WAITING GAME to hit record stores, radio and the Internet in January, this proactive pairing will spark and build a buzz from the grassroots of the live music stage to launch the discs with momentum already behind them.

The tour offers a chance for listeners to get acquainted with two seasoned live performers, superior singers and songwriters and budding recording artists sharing the stage at venues across the nation. Adams and Dasher will play shows in the Southwest and through Colorado and Nevada to the Midwest and Southeast, returning to play Texas in November

Brandon Adams & The Sad Bastards are a burgeoning West Texas new country phenomenon already winning a loyal following in dancehalls, honky-tonks and clubs across the region. Putting a modernist spin on firmly rooted Lone Star State style C&W, Adams takes his songwriting cues from acts he grew up on like Ray Price, Johnny Bush and George Strait as well as the progressive rocking Americana of Ryan Adams. Add to that his diverse tastes that enjoy the full stylistic spectrum of today’s popular music, and lyrical and singing skills that cut to the bone with both honesty and smarts, Adams and his band make music that goes straight to the hearts of real country fans while charming listeners that enjoy a range of musical flavors.

Jimmy Dasher displays a dazzling diversity that he melds into his own sound on THE WAITING GAME, all of it fired by the skills that won him the Best Guitarist title in his hometown of San Antonio while still in his mid-teens. As a high school student he honed his chops in Austin and San Antonio clubs, and later released two albums and an EP and also did two national tours in the fully independent acoustic duo Window. He also played and recorded with recording artist Levi Smith as he developed his own music, which came to fruition during a solitary stay at an old Texas Panhandle small town farmhouse where he later cut THE WAITING GAME.

Both Adams and Dasher are ready and determined to bring rich musicality, excitement and their engaging new sounds to the stage. “I love playing so much, and will do it anytime, anywhere for anyone who wants to listen,” says Adams.

Dasher is equally fired to bring his music to the stages of America’s clubs. For as he says, “There’s nothing I’d rather do than play live.”

Ornette Coleman Receives Honorary Doctorate of Music from the University of Michigan

Music legend Ornette Coleman received an honorary doctorate of music from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  The Department of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation of the School of Music, Theatre and Dance congratulates Mr. Coleman on this great honor, his 80th birthday, and for being one of the most important musicians and innovators of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.  The event also included a commencement address by President Barack Obama.

MORE ABOUT ORNETTE COLEMAN

Ornette Coleman is a leading composer and performer of jazz, whose remarkable artistry is admired around the world.  Born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1930, he taught himself how to play the saxophone and had formed his first band by the age of fourteen.  After touring with a traveling ensemble, he moved to Los Angeles and began to teach himself music theory while working as an elevator operator.  During this period, he performed with a rehearsal ensemble that allowed him to experiment with the new theoretical concepts he was developing.  The result of his self-study was a new freedom in jazz performance that has been described as a radically new concept and style that originated from his musical intuition, combining southwestern country blues and his own highly personal interpretations of music theory.  The compositional voice that Mr. Coleman developed in the 1950s would remain his trademark style and sound throughout his career.  The first of his many influential albums was recorded in 1958, released under the title Something Else, which launched him as a major innovator of jazz, leading to many more albums and a famous breakthrough engagement at the Five Spot Café in New York City, where he moved permanently.  His music, freed from the conventions of harmony, rhythm, and melody, both polarized and transformed the jazz community, and he devoted decades to understanding and discovering the shape of not just jazz, but all music to come.  At the core of his music is his theory of Harmolodics, which addresses the question of the sound and performance of music beyond the melody.  Beyond the twenty albums he released in the 1960s, Mr. Coleman also began to write string quartets, woodwind quintets, and symphonies based on his pioneering theories of musical composition.  His remarkable contributions to music have been recognized by a multitude of honors, including several honorary degrees, appointment as a MacArthur Foundation Fellow, induction into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the presentation of the prestigious Praemium Imperiale Award of the Japanese government.  In 2007 he was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and won the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 2007 for his album Sound Grammar.  In 2009 he became the 16th musician in history to be presented with the Miles Davis Award, in recognition for his regeneration of the jazz idiom.  His recent 80th birthday in March was marked with a variety of tributes, from articles, to concerts, to all-day broadcasts of his music.

meniskus | Live At The Walnut Room | 2010

The unique sound of meniskus is hard to classify. They have been labeled as Latin, European, House, Trance Rock, but none of these really pinpoint what their music sounds like. At times you can hear a mystic Middle Eastern influence, at other times hints of Ukrainian Punk and ancient ancestral harmonies. The only way to really understand is to see them perform live.  Meniskus's live stage performance is what makes this band great. They have finally caught some of the live energy on their latest release 'LIVE at The Walnut Room' recorded in Denver, Colorado in early 2010.

The opening track 'Morocco' is drenched in the soft nylon strings of  Venezuelan-born Bardusco's guitar and Eric Ostberg's howling violin.  Cris Ryt builds the tempo on the drums until the song eventually erupts like an exploding volcano. This transitions smoothly in to the second song, 'The Equalizer'; a driving, strong riff built on the passionate moans of Ostberg's voice. Track three, Latina really reflects the true sound of meniskus. Ryt provides a tantric techno beat as Ostberg and Bardusco trade leads that lift the soaring strings from high down to crashing bass chords below.  'Again', is one of my new favorites, the march of the drums and shouts of Again providing the attitude of a punk song.  'Sheik Don't Mind' is another reflection of the way these three band members play so well together. The feeling and emotions of each person combine in such a way that the song can sound different from night to night. Their world trance classification can be explained by the next track called 'Nightly Erotic'. It flows like the silken dress of a Persian belly dancer as she dances across the floor.  If ska is polka, and polka is punk, then 'The Partyer' is fun as funk. This is a song for everyone; I could easily see it get plenty of air play on KBCO.  'Brigade' is the anthem of this CD, it reminds me of the strong messages sung by U2 in the 80s.  'Combo' is another quick moving song built on forceful emotions and played as fast as a speeding train; by far my favorite song on the CD.  Last is a bonus studio track called 'Greed'. If this song is any indication of where meniskus is taking their music, we have lots to look forward to from this band in the future.

This band has perfected their skills from years on the road and polished their sound by days spent in the booths of Coupe Studios. It’s good to know the energy of their live shows has finally been captured on their CD.

Kinetix Announces New Album And Summer Tour Appearances

Denver, Colorado rockers Kinetix continue to build upon their DIY success of the previous five years, having spent 2009 logging more than 10,000+ miles criss-crossing the country setting concert hall and music festival audiences on fire with their soul-powered rock and roll. Now in 2010, the band has rededicated themselves to the studio and have produced their finest album to date. Uniting soaring vocal harmonies, muscular guitar riffs, deep bass, R&B flavored electronic organ drenched in reverb, a tireless work ethic and extreme attention to detail on the production of both their new album and live shows, Kinetix is set to continue assembling an army of intensely loyal fans from coast to coast.

With a band name derived in part from motion and energy, Kinetix's rise from their humble Denver roots into a popular nationally touring band has been nothing short of spectacular. Formed by a group of college buddies at Lamont School of Music at Denver University, Kinetix was originally merely a vehicle to blow off steam and play music at weekend hangouts. Their popularity during those early days became a phenomenon that quickly outgrew the rowdy house parties where the band cut their teeth.

The eleven tracks of Let Me In were produced by Andy Guerrero of the Flobots and engineered and mixed by Jason Livermore at the legendary rock and roll Blasting Room Studios. The new album builds upon the band's reputation as a live tour de force, but now heralds the rock quintet as studio musicians capable of creating an album worthy and almost certainly destined for mainstream radio play. Early listens of the new Kinetix album have garnered praise among fans and industry insiders alike as a more mature continuation of the keyboard and guitar driven sound Kinetix has always been known for.

While previous album efforts showcased the band's excellent musicianship, the new album plays up the addition of more emotionally insightful lyrical and vocal development, most notably heard on "Wishing Well" and "To See You Go". Keller Williams announces Brand New Album and Summer Tour Dates

Keller Williams releases his first-ever all-covers collection, amusingly titled Thief, on May 25, 2010. Recorded with the Keels—husband and wife duo Larry and Jenny KeelThief includes songs originally written and recorded by as wildly diverse an assemblage as anyone’s ever likely to dream up.

Keller is on tour this summer - at solo shows, with The Keels, and even for a run of gigs as vocalist/guitarist in The Rhythm Devils, the project by Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann and his partner percussionist Mickey Hart. Keller’s complete list of currently confirmed tour dates is included below.

Thief offers up Keller-versions of songs by an [almost] unthinkable collection of artists: from Amy Winehouse (“Rehab”) to the Grateful Dead (“Mountains of the Moon”), the Butthole Surfers (“Pepper”) to Kris Kristofferson (“Don’t Cuss That Fiddle,” which opens the album, and “The Year 2003 Minus 25,” which closes the album). The set is filled out with tunes by Ryan Adams, the Presidents of the United States of America, the Raconteurs, Patterson Hood, Danny Barnes, Cracker, the Yonder Mountain String Band and Marcy Playground. All over the place, indeed, but that’s the way Williams likes it. And in his hands it all makes sense—like everything he’s ever touched, whether from his own pen or someone else’s, it all becomes Keller Williams' music. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for a big Thief pre-sale and contest announcement coming soon.

Keller’s thirst for music of all kinds has also led him to the world of radio. For the past seven years he has hosted Keller’s Cellar, a weekly syndicated program available on over 40 terrestrial stations and online. Williams describes the show as “a self-indulgent, hour-long narrated mix tape of stuff I’m into. It’s rule-less except for what the FCC says we can’t do. I don’t play contemporary country music. I don’t play contemporary Christian music—however, there is possibly some old gospel. I don’t play opera. Everything else is fair game. World music from all around—African music from all the countries, jazz, funk, reggae, techno, chill, lounge, lounge singers, rub-a-dub, dancehall. I pretty much stay away from smooth jazz. It’s definitely a fun outlet for me.”

Long considered one of the most unique and prolific performers in all of rock, the Fredericksburg, Virginia native is known for flying by the seat of his pants on stage, utilizing an unorthodox approach that centers around an Echoplex Digital Pro looping unit, which allows Keller to alternate between several instruments on stage.

Sunny Ade & His African Beats @ Boulder Theater

King Sunny Ade, sometimes also called the Minister of Enjoyment, was born in Oshogbo, Nigeria in 1946, the son of a Methodist minister. He began his musical career when, after dropping out of grammer school, he drifted to Lagos and joined a highlife band. Inspired by the music of I.K. Dairo, he joined the Rhythm Dandies, led by Moses Olaiya (later known as Baba Sala, Nigeria's preeminent funny man and a prolific film maker). King Sunny was influenced by the legendary Tunde Nightingale (early Juju pioneer extraordinare) and borrowed stylistic elements from Nightingale's 'So wa mbe' style of juju.

In 1966 he formed his own band, the Green Spots. After a long eight years in which they recorded 12 LPs for the Nigeria-Africa Song label, in 1974 he entered into increasingly annoying contract hassles and a public court case. This experience prompted him into forming his own recording company linked to Decca Records. At this time he changed the name of his band to the African Beats.

King Sunny Ade and The African Beats tour with the typically large African line-up of 20-30 members. They play a spacey, jamming sort of Juju, characterized by tight vocal harmonies, intricate guitar work, backed by traditional talking drums, percussion instruments, and even adding the unusual pedal steel guitar and accordian.

One Way Or Another...

April brings the band back to the mountains for another great run out west. The tour begins with stops in Aspen and Avon before holding down the Boulder Theater for Friday and Saturday night. From there its off to Northern California for two nights at the Mystic Theater before heading to the northwest for shows in Portland, Seattle, Olympia and Ashland. 4/20 finds the band back in CA at the Eureka Theater. Then its off to Reno before swinging into San Fran for a weekend at the Regency Ballroom. The last leg of the tour winds south through California stopping off in Modesto, Los Angeles, Santa Ana before wrapping up with 2 nights at the Belly Up in Solona Beach.

Our friend Stu Allen will be joining us for this tour starting April 7th. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Stu joined Melvin Seals & JGB in June 2004 and appears on the 'Keepers of the Flame' album. In the early 1990's, he co-founded the Minnesota-based acoustic-electric jam band, Blue Man Jive. In addition, he is a founding member of The Jones Gang, Minneapolis' premier Grateful Dead tribute band, to which he still lends his talents. A resident of San Francisco, Stu continues to explore, experiment, create, and recreate, within a variety of musical styles. He can't wait to join us on the road and come and play for you folks.

Kicking off in Minnesota and cruising through the mid-west with stops in Iowa and Illinois before hitting Summerfest for the annual street fest where there will be plenty of dancin' in the streets. From there we head to our annual celebration at Nelson's Ledges where we will celebrate 4th of July weekend (July 2-3-4) with Gratefulfest 11 and will be joined by Keller Williams, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Peter Rowan's Bluegrass Band, JGB, Emmit-Nershi Band and more! Follow that up with a headlining spot at All Good's Thursday Throwdown and a return to the annual Gathering of the Vibes. Summer is looking pretty sweet.

Two More Mondays of Thelonious MONK

Thelonious Sphere Monk, recognized as one of the most inventive pianists of any musical genre, he achieved a startling original sound that even his most devoted followers have been unable to successfully imitate.  His musical vision was both ahead of it’s time and deeply rooted in the tradition.  He shares with Edward "Duke" Ellington the distinction of being one of the century’s greatest American composers.

Two more Mondays left to see Laurence Holder's hit play, MONK, about the life and times of Jazz genius, Thelonious Sphere  Monk.  The play will be in performance on Feb 15th, and Feb 22nd @7pm.  at the world famous Nuyorican Poets Cafe.

For the February 22nd closing performance Rome Neal will have a special Banana Puddin' Jazz Jam & Open Mic event after the play, starting at 9pm. Purchase your tickets for the play and stay for the JAM all for $20. If you come down just for Rome's Banana Puddin' Jazz that night it's only $10!

MONK, the play received it's world premiere at the Nuyorican ten years ago and has since been seen by audiences all over the United States, from the east coast to the west coast and in the north and south.  So come out and celebrate this play which has made it's footprints in Black History/Jazz History/American History........
