Drug Rug Play BOULDER At B-Side Lounge On 10.2 & 10.3

Thomas Allen and Sarah Cronin met in 2006 while working at the Middle East Club in Cambridge, Ma. After trading secret demos of their own songs, Tommy persuaded Sarah to combine forces. They spent their first date drinking whiskey in bed and playing each other songs on an old guitar. They’ve been inseparable ever since. Several months later, they christened themselves “Drug Rug,” a name which has made strangers laugh and parents cry.

The songs are inspired by the storytelling style of early folk musicians, comic books, campgrounds, funny hats, and the illustrations of Garth Williams.

Drug Rug's S/T debut record, melted hearts and ears, and earned them rave reviews and comparisons to some of rock's greatest duos.

"Paint the Fence Invisible" is certain to keep these trends going.

While running the stylistic gamut, from the country duets of Ken and Dolly to the Pet Sound's harmonies of Brian Wilson, Drug Rug still stays true to their rock n' roll roots including The Velvet Underground and The Byrds.

"Paint The Fence Invisible" displays Tommy & Sarah's growth as true artists.

After touring with both Fiery Furnaces and Dr. Dog, the band's honed musicianship and lush vocals were laid down on tape with the help of Carter Tanton (Tulsa), Julian Cassanetti & Jeremy Black (Apollo Sunshine).

The album was recorded primarily in a haunted house located in the Catskill mountains of New York and their hi-fi approach to lo-fi aesthetics were effectively crafted.

The result is a different and memorable record by a rock-duo who make their own rules.

The magic captured feels both timely and timeless...  sometimes at the same time.

They believe in the imminent end of the world and will destroy each other with love before the apocalypse.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds play Colorado Springs, July 24

For over thirty years, The Fabulous Thunderbirds have been the quintessential American band. The group's distinctive and powerful sound, influenced by a diversity of musical styles, manifested itself into a unique musical hybrid via such barnburners as “Tuff Enuff” and “Wrap It Up.”

thunderbirdsFounding member Kim Wilson spearheads the group as it evolves into its newest incarnation. “We started as a straight blues band.” vocalist and harmonica player Wilson says. “We now incorporate a mixture of a lot of different styles. We're an American music band and we're higher energy than ever before.” The Fabulous Thunderbirds features Jay Moeller on drums, Johnny Moeller and Mike Keller on guitar, and Randy Bermudes on bass.

Wilson’s musical talents have garnered him multiple Blues Awards and Grammy Nominations. The Blues Foundation 2008 blues Music Awards named Wilson "Instrumentalist - Harmonica" category.  In 2006, he was named “Contemporary Blues Male Artist of the Year” in 2006, and “Lookin’ for Trouble!” was named Blues Song of the Year in 2004. Wilson has contributed to the work of many other great artists such as the legendary Muddy Waters (who called him his “son”), contemporary artist Bonnie Raitt, guitar legends Stevie Ray Vaughn and brother Jimmy Vaughn, and Martin Scorsese’s movie “The Blues." With his current movie project “Cadillac Records,” Wilson continues to focus on the music he loves.

With over 20 albums recorded and millions sold, Kim Wilson and The Fabulous Thunderbirds tour the world performing their own unique style of music. Ranging from pop anthems like “Powerful Stuff” which was featured in the Tom Cruise movie “Cocktail," to the low down blues of "Chicago," this brand of honest music brings fans back time and again.

Having shared the stage with The Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, Carlos Santana and blues legends BB King and Buddy Guy and countless others, The Fabulous Thunderbirds continue to tour Europe and the North America, bringing more great music to their fans worldwide.

Their new CD (tentative title “Pay Back Time”) is to be released in mid-2009.

Tower of Power to play the Boulder Theater

With 40 years of recording and touring experience behind them, Tower of Power still garners reviews calling them a “very contemporary sounding band.” Melding jazz, funk, rock and soul in a way no group ever has, the ten-piece outfit is, according to the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, “tighter than a clenched fist.”

Well known in the '70s for tunes such as “What is Hip?” and “You’re Still a Young Man,” Tower of Power toured with Sly Stone and Creedence Clearwater Revival, creating traffic jams when they started to headline their own shows. They performed on records with Elton John, Smokey Robinson, Rod Stewart, Aerosmith, and Dionne Warwick, and influenced a generation of musicians (including Sting, who has told Emilio Castillo, founder of the group, that he once had a “Tower of Power clone band” before he formed The Police).   In the 1980s, they backed Huey Lewis and the News for his world tours.  They continued to play their own music in between Lewis' gigs.

Tower of Power is experiencing a renaissance, touring most of every year and packing venues in the United States, the Pacific Rim, and all over Europe with its audience of new and old fans.  Joined by a new singer, Larry Braggs, who Emilio Castillo described as "the best singer we've had since the '70s," the group released their album OAKLAND ZONE on Or Music in 2003, and have started work on a new album which will be covers of classic soul hits.

On June 6, 2004 The California Music Association inducted Tower of Power with a Lifetime Achievement Award and cited their 2003 Sony Legacy anthology Havin’ Fun as soul/R&B album of the year, beating our releases by En Vougue and Raphael Saadaq.  In 2006, original guitarist Bruce Conte returned to the group, making half the lineup featuring original band members, who are also: David Garibaldi, Emilio, Doc Kupka, Rocco Prestia.  Prestia took a break last summer for heart surgery, but he has returned to the band. It has been a long, hard road, but lately things keep getting better and better.

When asked to describe the band's music, the group members give a variety of responses. Says Emilio, “What Tower plays is soul music.” Former Tower saxophonist Lenny Pickett, now musical director for the Saturday Night Live band says, “TOP is the world’s best rhythm and blues band.” In reality, TOP’s horn-driven, in-your-face sound is all its own. Read more about Tower of Power at www.bumpcity.com.

Tower of Power will be playing the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th Street, in Boulder, on July 8 at 8 PM.  This is a 21 and over show.  Tickets are $36.50, and the venue phone is 303-786-7030.  The web site is http://www.bouldertheater.com.

Nouvelle Vague play select US cities for June tour!

On their debut, Nouvelle Vague took cherished tracks from the late 1970s and early 1980s by acts such as Joy Division, The Clash, The Cure, Depeche Mode and the Dead Kennedys and reworked them in a gentle bossa nova style. Sung by French female vocalists, some of whom had never heard the originals before, these cult hits had new life breathed into them, and their meanings became softly subverted. In French, Nouvelle Vague means “new wave”, and “bossa nova” in Portuguese. Even the records’ sleeves wittily referenced the artwork for Jean Luc Godard’s early-’60s new-wave films.

The group expanded its musical palette on Bande A Part, adding touches of reggae, ska and blues to balmy readings of familiar numbers by Bauhaus, Blondie, Buzzcocks, New Order and Yazoo, among others. By this point, even hardcore fans who’d considered these easy-listening versions of punk staples to be sacrilege learned to enjoy Nouvelle Vague as a guilty pleasure. But what of the authors who wrote the original songs – what did these once-ruthless idealists think of Nouvelle Vague’s more fragrant approach?

Well, of those canvassed, all approved – thumbs up from Mick Jones of the Clash, Morrissey, the Undertones, Dead Kennedys and Killing Joke. And this led Oliver and Marc to the concept behind the third album: Nouvelle Vague performs duets with the original singers.  The pair wrote a ‘dream’ list of the people they’d most like on the album and, when contacted, most said yes.

So on NV3 you’ll encounter Depeche Mode’s singing “Master and Servant” with Nouvelle Vague’s leading lady Melanie Pain; Ian McCulloch of Echo And The Bunnymen duetting with Melanie on “All My Colours”; Marina Celeste performing “Our Lips Are Sealed” with Terry Hall of the Specials and Funboy Three (that’s a Go-Go’s track penned by Hall); and Magazine’s “Parade” sung by Barry Adamson and NV’s Nadeah Miranda. For additional tracks that didn’t make the final album, Chris Bailey from legendary Kiwi rockers The Saints performs a duet, likewiseSamy Birnbach of noted Belgian new-wavers Minimal Compact.

Nouvelle Vague transform Talking Heads’ “Road To Nowhere” into a dusty bar-room shuffle, its head bowed as it traipses into the sunset after a long day working the land. “Heaven” by Psychedelic Furs becomes a tender acoustic affair. A bluesy swagger through Gary Numan’s “Metal” is sung with innocence and charm by Eloisia, a young Brazilian girl who could barely speak English and knew nothing of this music. Even “God Save The Queen”, once full of menace and bile, is fashioned into a romantic flutter. Add enchanting covers of Plastic Bertrand’s “Ca Plane Pour Moi”, Soft Cell’s “Say Hello Wave Goodbye” and “So Lonely” by the Police, and you have Nouvelle Vague’s strongest album to date.

To keep it fresh, Marc and Olivier approached this album in the same spirit of discovery with which they made their 2004 debut. Back then, says Olivier, they recorded four songs for fun and played them to friends, who loved them, and also loved the idea of turning new-wave songs into something different. And so they made an album.

As with all Nouvelle Vague’s work, the real stars of the records and shows are the songs themselves.

When Nouvelle Vague play live, these well-known songs by other people become Nouvelle Vague’s songs. They own them, you might say. In the last few years the group have taken to the road as a six-piece touring outfit, playing shows and festivals all over the world.

Mama’s Cookin’ to Play A String of Colorado Shows

Mama’s Cookin’ returns to Colorado in June to bring the heat as only they can for 10 shows for the state that gave birth to the band. Mama’s Cookin has become one of Colorado’s favorite group of rockers and this tour finds them playing renowned venues and festivals including a headlining slot at the South Park Music Festival and two huge shows at The Fox Theater in Boulder and at Owsley’s Golden Road in Denver. As the Denver Post said in a review of a Mama’s Cookin’ show, “You have to see this band.”

mamas-cookinTheir effortless melding of blues, soul-driven rock and hip-hop has propelled the band to the point that their upcoming stops in mountain towns are charged with expectations of bigger things to come. June shows include Breckenridge, Durango, Silverton, Crested Butte, Salida and Grand Junction. This band is truly not to be missed. Aggressive and in-your-face at times, yet subtle and eloquent at others, Mama’s Cookin’ puts on a show like no other. Original sounds are generated from the obliteration of genres and the mixing of styles, making Mama’s Cookin’ true pioneers.

Zebuel Early’s vocal style is refreshing yet gritty, rolling in hip-hop rhyme with down-south delta blues. His voice is inviting and flowing, but it’s his slide work on the guitar matched with ranging and very technical riffs that make him the supreme lead man. Responsible for bringing groove to the equation, Eric Matlock manages the keyboards and Steve LaBella funks it up with the four-string, taking the hard-rock sound down home into the realm of dirty funk. The band’s impeccable timing and fluidity can be traced back to the incredible chops of drummer Mike Adamo.

Their 2008 self-titled studio release won the hearts of music fans across the country as being nearly flawless and innovative. JamBands.com named the album the 12th best of 2008 and the album is finding national traction on the radio, indicating this is not a jam band. Mama’s Cookin’ has huge momentum and is looking at their shows at The Fox Theater in Boulder, Owsley’s Golden Road in Denver and their headlining gig at the South Park Music Festival as a hint of what is to come. Get on board and see what the buzz is all about. These boys will rock you socks off and fill the dance floor with people ready to throw down with some Colorado-style raging.

EOTO Set to Play Two Shows During Summer Solstice

The left coast breakbeat, glitch-hop and house duo known as EOTO is set to play two monumental shows during the Summer Solstice in California on June 19 and June 20, on top of their already jam-packed festival schedule. Since the new year rolled around has toured relentlessly and played more than 80 shows and making a name for themselves as pioneers of a new sound, an innovative blend of live instrumentation and digital mixing. Both the June 19 show at Rhythm Lounge in Long Beach, CA, and the June 20 show at The Belly Up in Solana Beach, CA, should be another set of landmarks performances for the ground-shattering, beat innovators.

eotoFeaturing Jason Hann and Michael Travis, formerly of the progressive jam outfit The String Cheese Incident, EOTO is a shot of adrenaline to the heart of the music industry. Differing in sonic stature from their mixing forefathers, the typical EOTO live experience is 100% atypical, meaning nothing is pre-recorded, nothing is pre-looped and no set is pre-planned. Every night is a distinctive journey into the musical minds of Hann and Travis, each feeding off of the other’s creativity and the audience’s vibes. EOTO combines cutting-edge technology with live instrumental performance to create truly original and melodic dance music in the moment.

No group on the circuit tours as hard as EOTO and nothing has changed for the foreseeable future, save festival dates in exchange for the night-after-night venue spots they have played so far in 2009. Hann and Travis have been from west to east and everywhere in between in just five months and are primed to play at least 35 shows between now and the end of September. It will be a nice break for the two to venture back indoors for the pair of Summer Solstice shows, where the bone-quaking and mind-rippling beats they create spontaneously are well at home. By the time they reach California, EOTO will have more than proven they are big enough and calculated enough for the wide open spaces of the festival tour, which includes stops at Summercamp, Wakarusa, SONIC BLOOM, Rothbury Festival, Camp Bisco, The Phamily Reunion, Shambhala Festival and Earthdance.

Grand Funk Railroad to play Elitch Gardens, May 16

Grand Funk Railroad will be playing the Elitch Arena, in Elitch Gardens, in Denver on May 16 at 7 PM.  Tickets to the show are free with the price of admission to the gardens.   There are different kinds of tickets to the Gardens, from daily tickets to season passes. The venue phone is 303-595-4386, and the web site is http://www.elitchgardens.com.

Formed in 1969, Grand Funk was born out of the ashes of Terry Knight & The Pack, another band from Flint, Michigan.  Currently the group includes original founding members Don Brewer (vocals and drums, writer and singer of the hit, "We're An American Band") and bassist Mel Schacher.  Joining Don and Mel are true "ALL-STARS"-- Max Carl (38 Special, Jack Mack and the Heart Attack, Max Carl and Big Dance), lead guitarist Bruce Kulick (12 years with KISS and credits with Michael Bolton, Meatloaf and Billy Squier), and keyboardist Tim Cashion (Bob Seger and Robert Palmer).

Together, Brewer and Schacher have created a dynamic and multi-talented five piece band that will not only carry on the tradition of Grand Funk hits, but also has the potential to create a new chapter in the legacy of Grand Funk Railroad.  With Grand Funk reforming in 2000, this new chapter in the band's biography is being written daily.  Both seasoned Grand Funk lovers and contemporary rock fans-- discovering the group for the first time on CDs and VH-1-- will be able to see and hear firsthand that Grand Funk Railroad's train is back on track.
