Yoko Ono Heats Up Dancefloors Once Again With Her Latest Summer Smash "Talking to the Universe"

Following the overwhelming success of her eighth #1 BILLBOARD HOT DANCE CLUB PLAY charting remix single “MOVE ON FAST”, YOKO ONO heats up dancefloors once again with her latest summer smash "TALKING TO THE UNIVERSE”.

Since bursting onto BILLBOARD’S HOT DANCE CLUB PLAY SINGLES CHART as the Hot Shot Debut at #36* (with a bullet) (Issue date: 07/16/2011), "TALKING TO THE UNIVERSE" has proved to be a fiery confection and one of Yoko’s most feverish and dynamic reinventions. Throughout its eight week stint on the chart, the single has quickly gained momentum claiming "the #25* spot (with a bullet)" as that week’s Power Pick (Issue date: 07/23/2011) before leaping into the "Top 20 at #17* (with a bullet)" (Issue date: 07/30/2011). It’s currently at #3* (with a bullet) (Issue date: 09/3/2011) nestled among contemporary pop and electronic music stalwarts BEYONCE, KYLIE MINOGUE, BRITNEY SPEARS, RIHANNA and DEPECHE MODE.

Originally taken from the 1995 YOKO ONO / IMA collaborative album RISING, the lean, funk-fueled rocker finds ONO tuning in to the universe as our as our celestial medium and ambassador to the cosmos urging listeners to purge all the preconceived notions, pretenses and fears that confine us in order to bask in a freer state of being. It’s an inspiring message of self actualization and empowerment that has become hallmark themes throughout her vast career.

ONO has long been credited with igniting the punk-rock fire years before its official explosion and her work continues to be relevant and generation-inspiring decades later.  Meticulously reinventing her material for 21st-century dancefloors has given the vanguard artist a greater platform and visibility of which many contemporaries and present-day contenders can be envious.

"TALKING TO THE UNIVERSE" marks  the latest chapter in ONO's staggering body of remixed works which, to date, has yielded  eight #1 BILLBOARD CLUB PLAY chart hits ("MOVE ON FAST", "WOULDNIT' (I'M A STAR)", "GIVE ME SOMETHING", "I'M NOT GETTING ENOUGH", "GIVE PEACE A CHANCE", "NO NO NO", "EVERYMAN / EVERYWOMAN" and the timeless "WALKING ON THIN ICE") and two critically-acclaimed remix anthologies:  YES, I'M A WITCH and its companion release OPEN YOUR BOX, an incredibly impressive feat for an artist who has spent her life on the cutting edge of music, art and pop culture.

“TALKING TO THE UNIVERSE” is available as three separate digital green releases (no materials used or abused) on MIND TRAIN / TWISTED Records issued July 5th, August 2nd and September 6th, respectively, on  iTunes.

G. Love Premieres "Fixin' To Die" Video

G. Love premieres the video for title track "Fixin' To Die" featuring Scott and Seth Avett today over at Vevo. Be sure to catch G. Love on tour in support of his new country blues and roots album, Fixin’ To Die, set for release on Brushfire Records on February 22, 2011. Recorded at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC, and produced by Scott and Seth Avett, the album is arguably G. Love’s most sincere and candid work to date.
Inspired by the shared musical heritage between G. Love and The Avett Brothers, the result is Fixin’ To Die, a collection of rearranged traditionals, a classic cover, and a slew of G. Love originals, many simmering for over a decade, all sharing a common goal: to strip away all pretense and capture the original spirit and sound G. Love has cultivated over his entire career but never fully embraced until now.
G. Love will make his first ever appearance at SXSW in 2011. Performance locations will be announced at a later date. The title track from the album is now available for free download.

DEAD CENTER at THE BROOKLYN BOWL

The Jam Stampede will perform at their ongoing Dead Center event at Brooklyn Bowl on January 25, 2011.  Michael Falzarano (New Riders, Hot Tuna) and Barry Mitterhoff (Hot Tuna) will join us again after having such a good time last August at the very well received Jerry Garcia Retrospective.

With the help of our good friends Michael and Barry we will again revisit some of the Grateful Dead lore. On this date January 25, 1971, 40 years ago, a very propitious year for the Dead, The NRPS and the Grateful Dead performed at the Seattle Center, Seattle Wash. This was a very common occurrence back at that time and sadly short lived.

In homage to that time and place, Jam Stampede will again mine the Grateful Dead and New Riders catalogue for yet another great Dead Center Show at the Brooklyn Bowl.

Weathermaker will also be issuing forth special vinyl editions of all three re-issues, to be ready for turntables in the Spring.

2010 has also seen Clutch experience an increased amount of exposure (due not only to the formation of Weathermaker Music and the band's massive touring schedule) but also due to higher billing on visible events such as Austin City Limits (Austin, TX), The High Voltage Classic Rock Festival (London, UK) and The Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival (Nashville, Manchester, TN). In addition, television appearances such as Comcast Cable's "In Concert - On Demand" and most recently Fox News TV (see below) have given music fans the long awaited visual to match the bands classic sound.

Greg Lewis Upcoming NYC Appearances

New York native, keyboardist Greg Lewis, a highly accomplished mainstay on the city’s jazz, blues and funk scenes, who has earned a solid reputation for his versatile work around town in a vast variety of settings, steps out front for the first time on his debut CD Organ Monk. Lewis’ sensitive and soulful keyboard playing has made him a favorite among some of the music’s finest vocalists – including blues queen Sweet Georgia Brown, jazz and soul songstress.

Lezlie Harrison and ex-Brooklyn Funk Essentials singer/songwriter Stephanie McKay  -- and earned him a featured role on saxophonist Sam Newsome’s Groove Project recording 24/7.  Now on Organ Monk the spotlight is finally shined on his enormous talents as the leader of his own allstar trio featuring multitalented guitarist Ron Jackson and drummer extraordinaire Cindy Blackman.

Born into a musical family, Lewis’ introduction to jazz came from hearing Monk records from the collection his late father, pianist David Lewis, who was a dedicated fan of Thelonious.  “It all started there,” the younger Lewis proclaims, also naming unsung master Elmo Hope as a major influence.  Lewis started his own piano studies at the age of eleven and began playing professionally around New York as a teenager.  He credits jazz legend Gil Coggins, who sent him as a sub one night to a gig where there was a Hammond B-3, for setting him on the path to becoming a bona fide organist.  These days Lewis has so devoted himself to mastering the difficult instrument with such fervor that he considers himself to be an “organ monk.”

Working weekly for the past five years at the hip Brooklyn club Night Of The Cookers, with his regular trio featuring Ron Jackson on guitar, Lewis has honed his skills on the B 3 to become one of New York’s first call organists.  It was at the club that he first met drummer Cindy Blackman, who was so impressed with his playing that she sat in with the group and made arrangements to later perform with Lewis.  An unwavering fan of the Tony Williams Lifetime group, featuring Larry Young on organ, Blackman is the perfect complement for Lewis’, who names Young as his primary influence on the instrument (along with, of course, Jimmy Smith as well as Sly Stone).  Lewis cites Young’s landmark interpretation of “Monk’s Dream” from the classic Unity album as a further inspiration for his decision to devote this his first date to the music of Thelonious.

Although albums memorializing Monk’s music have become somewhat commonplace since the iconic pianist/composer’s death, Organ Monk is most likely the very first on which the date is led by an organist.   Lewis’ years of familiarizing himself with both his instrument’s expansive capabilities, as well as Monk’s sizable songbook, have led to this inevitable debut recording that breathes new life into the master’s repertory, while exploiting the Hammond B 3’s vast (and somewhat untapped) potential for creating new sounds.

Despite its classic organ-guitar-drum configuration, Lewis’ trio is far from typical in approach to making modern music. His arrangements of the fourteen Monk titles on the record are consciously contemporary in their originality, respecting the composer’s melodic, harmonic and rhythmic voice, while using the different elements of each piece to propel the group into its own unique nexus, one where the customary divisions between soloist and accompanist are blurred, or even erased.   Beginning with “Trinkle Tinkle”, one of Monk’s more intricate melodic lines, Lewis’ mastery of both the B 3’s dual keyboards and its too often neglected bass pedals is clearly evident, as is his fearless approach to arranging for the trio, with Blackman’s powerful drums doubling the intricate melody with him.

Lewis’ unaccompanied introduction to ”Jackie-ing”, slowing building around the chords of the playful Monk march before inviting drums and guitar to join him is an eloquent lesson in dynamic tension and release.  The trio trips around in space with Lewis’ organ at times reminiscent of Sun Ra before sliding smoothly into the infectious melody of “Criss Cross”, with Blackman’s drums offering a jagged contrast to the velvety tone of the B 3, before the trio settles into an earthy mood and then blasts back into the stratosphere to conclude astrally.  The band’s easy swinging reading of the beautiful “Light Blue”, featuring Jackson’s soulful guitar, is a ringing affirmation of the group’s ability to shine brightly in the classic organ trio tradition, as is their burning up tempo rendition of the not often heard “Played Twice” that features an exciting Lewis-Blackman dialogue.

The date’s other nine Monk pieces each offer a different perspective on the master’s work.  There’s the bouncing rhythm that jumps out of the long tones that set up “Boo Boo’s Birthday” and its fittingly funny quote by Lewis of the nursery rhyme “Mary Had A Little Lamb”, followed the lilting rhythms of the bebop masterpiece “Coming On The Hudson.”  Blackman’s energetic drumming on the fiercely burning “Four In One”, reminiscent of Art Blakey’s work with Monk, incites Lewis and Jackson to some of their best soloing of the date.  Lewis’ playing on “Locomotion” with his tonally expansive keyboard work, intelligent use of space and cleverly complementary bass line is nothing short of masterful.  On “We See” the trio once again swings mightily, with Lewis clearly demonstrating the influence of the great Jimmy Smith on his virtuosic playing.

“Monk’s Mood” is the date’s most beautiful ballad, with Lewis displaying the sensitive lyricism that has made him the favorite accompanist of so many of New York’s finest vocalists.  The trio shows off its intuitive split second timing in an edge of your seat dramatic reading of the marvelous melody of “Think Of One”, before digging down into their shared deep blues roots.  Lewis’ harmonic daring is clearly evident on his audacious arrangement of “Work.”  The final Monk piece of the date, “Introspection”, is a fitting example of the unmitigated joy the trio finds in coming together to make great music.

The date’s concluding coda is a Lewis original, “Kohl’s Here”, a fittingly Monkish melody dedicated to his teenage son that gives listeners a brief glimpse into the keyboardist’s own impressive abilities as a composer.  A talent that is sure to be seen in greater abundance on future releases from this extraordinary artist.

Yoko Ono To Release "Wouldnit (I'm A Star)" The Remixes

Just in time for the balmy, dog days of summer, YOKO ONO delivers another sweltering dancefloor juggernaut with the release of “WOULDNIT” (I’M A STAR). The explosive single finds the avant-garde pioneer, once again, holding sway with discerning DJs, clubbers and tastemakers worldwide who’ve propelled her to the top of Billboard’s club charts nestled comfortably alongside mainstream and electronic pop heavyweights like LADY GAGA, KATY PERRY, RIHANNA, KYLIE MINOGUE, SCISSOR SISTERS, KE$HA, TAIO CRUZ and GOLDFRAPP.

“WOULDNIT” (I’M A STAR) is the latest release from ONO’s acclaimed remix series, which has paired the iconoclast with an impressive cast of innovative collaborators (FLAMING LIPS, ANTONY AND THE JOHNSONS, PET SHOP BOYS, BASEMENT JAXX, SPARKS, PEACHES, CSS, and Oscar winning composer CRAIG ARMSTRONG) and spawned 6 #1 dance singles to date including “GIVE ME SOMETHING”, “I’M NOT GETTING ENOUGH”, “GIVE PEACE A CHANCE”, “NO NO NO”, “EVERYMAN / EVERYWOMAN” and the seminal “WALKING ON THIN ICE”.

“WOULDNIT” (I’M A STAR) has been blazing up the BILLBOARD HOT DANCE CLUB PLAY CHART since its debut five weeks ago entering at #32* with a bullet (Issue Date: 08/07/2010). It quickly ascended to the #24 power pick (Issue Date: 08/14/2010), and is currently in the Top Ten at #8* with a bullet (Issue Date: 09/04/2010)!

Originally appearing in 2 different settings, one on YOKO’s LP BLUEPRINT FOR A SUNRISE and the other on her IMA collaboration RISING, the bluesy reflection has been retooled into a surging motivational anthem for anyone with the courage and conviction to re-make themselves, follow their dreams and aspire to greatness regardless of obstacles.

It’s classic ONO: unfettered and defiant.

Featuring potent, modern reinventions from established dance music stalwarts DAVE AUDE, RICHARD MOREL, RALPHI ROSARIO and leftfield, New York techno / house producer ROB RIVES (aka FLOPPY SOUNDS / PHANTOM POWER), along with newcomers DJ YIANNIS, DENNY TSETTOS, EMJAE (aka MATTHEW JOHNSON of Boston-based duo, NIGHTRIDERS), M-DEEP and TIMMY LOOP, the single is a tour-de-force and easily one of ONO’s most immediate remix offerings to date.

It’s unbelievable that at 77 years young, the alt-rock matriarch is as inventive and prolific as ever.  Nearly 5 decades since first bursting onto the unsuspecting art and music worlds with her forward-thinking works, Yoko continues to evolve and thrive – both inside and outside the margins – still dreaming, pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo with her own unique and uncompromising artistic vision.

It’s been quite a storied journey with many more exciting moves to unfold.

“WOULDNIT (I’M A STAR)” will be released later this month as a digital green release (no materials used or abused) on MIND TRAIN / TWISTED Records.

Bobby Long to Appear at Mile High Festival on Saturday, August 14

British singer-songwriter Bobby Long returns to the road this summer for a combination of solo acoustic shows and a series of dates at which he will be backed by a band for the first time since arriving on American shores just over a year ago.  Long, who has been working on his recording debut album backed by studio musicians, has been anxious to bring this new dynamic to his live appearances and is looking forward to giving his hauntingly personal songs added depth and dimension.

The first of Long’s band shows will be at New York’s Highline Ballroom on Tuesday, June 15, followed by three other dates in the Northeast and a run of west coast dates in early July.  His band is comprised of musicians he met while on a short run of US shows this May.  In between the full band dates, he will perform solo.

Signed to ATO Records in April, Long has been making his self-financed studio debut under the helm of producer Liam Watson, who won a Grammy® for his work on Elephant by The White Stripes.  They began recording at Watson’s analog Toe Rag Studios in London during Long’s short breaks from his hectic 2009 touring schedule – Bobby played 160 headline shows in seven months in seven countries.

Meanwhile, Bobby’s independent CDs, sold exclusively at his shows, have earned critical  acclaim of their own.  Selections from DIRTY POND SONGS, the 10-song collection he recorded in his London apartment, have made their way onto AAA radio playlists in the U.S., becoming the catalyst for his inclusion on NPR’s “World Café” national broadcast in April and his live performance at the Non-Commercial Radio Conference (Non-Comm) in Philadelphia on June 3.  The Columbia (MO) Daily Tribune, in a recent show preview, wrote:  “…’Dirty Pond Songs,’ musically, is a revelation – both in its simplicity and strength of songwriting.  Most of the album is occupied simply by Long, his gentle, steady acoustic guitar strum and lonesome harmonica.  But, Long holds enough talent to keep fans' attention without any extravagant bells and whistles.”

Additionally, “Left To Lie,” Long’s first digital release from DIRTY POND SONGS, reached #1 on the iTunes “Unsigned” chart and #8 on the Folk chart, while  “My Darling Belle,” his latest digital single culled from the DANGEROUS SUMMER 2009 live compilation, reached #2 on the iTunes Singer-Songwriter chart by the end of its first day of release.  Such affirmation has only served to build anticipation for the studio debut to be released via ATO Records.

Bobby Long 2010 Summer Tour

Long’s live performances have been receiving more notice as he carves out strongholds in U.S. markets that have welcomed him back repeatedly.  Until now, it was just him and an acoustic guitar, but that has never left his audiences wanting.  As Jambase described a recent live performance:  “The majority of the catalog builds off relatively simplistic chord progressions, but he shows a remarkable knack for adding color via accent notes with his unorthodox two-fingered picking attack and construction of fuller, brighter chords than the standard singer-songwriter fare.”  Another writer for jitzul.com summed it up:  “…just with his voice and his guitar, he fills the space and commands the stage.  His voice was made to hear live and it never waivers.”

Adding the band will allow Bobby to stretch out a bit.  “I’m looking at the shows with a band as another chapter in this adventure,” says Long.  “I played guitar in a band when I first started performing music, but it was before I wrote my own material.  It will be an exciting experience for me to add fresh elements to my songs like I was able to do when I was recording the album.”

Bobby Long’s summer shows (with band dates noted) include:

June 15—Highline Ballroom, New York City (band date); 16—Harpers Ferry, Boston (band date); 17—Stage One, Fairfield, CT (band date); 18—World Café Live (main room), Philadelphia (band date); 23—The Space, Evanston, IL; 24—The Basement, Columbus, OH; 26—Mixtape Venue, Grand Rapids, MI; 28—The Firebird, St. Louis; 29—Record Bar, Kansas City;

July 3—El Corazon, Seattle; 4—Backstage Bar, Vancouver, BC; 6—Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco (band date); 7—Anthology, San Diego (band date); 8—Wasted Space at Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas (band date); 9—The Troubadour, Los Angeles, CA (band date); 17—XPoNential Music Festival, Wiggins Park, Camden, NJ (band date); and August 14—Mile High Festival, Denver.  More U.S. dates will be announced shortly.
