Meat Puppets continue to add tour dates supporting "Lollipop"

Legendary rock trio the Meat Puppets continue to tour supporting their 13th LP, Lollipop, out now on Megaforce Records. After being invited to this years' Animal Collective-curated All Tomorrow's Parties to perform Up on The Sun, the Meat Puppets will re-release their seminal album on vinyl, available in stores September 13.
For the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's NevermindSPIN invited the Meat Puppets to contribute an interpretation of one of the iconic tracks and the band chose to tackle "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Listen to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and read what Curt Kirkwood had to say about the recording at SPIN.com.
Check out the Pitchfork-premiered trippy video for "Orange," album art and download "Damn Thing" off the new LP. Produced by band leader Curt Kirwood, and recorded at Spoon's HiFi Studio in Austin, Lollipop features the indelible Kirkwood brothers back at work and back at play on 12 powerful new original cuts.

BEIRUT Extend Tour In Support of THE RIP TIDE, out 8/30

Beirut’s The Rip Tide is out August 30 on Zach Condon’s very own Pompeii Records. Few predicted the inward journey Beirut leader, Zach Condon, would achieve on The Rip Tide, an album with the most introspective and memorable songs of his young career. With songs that speak of love, friendship, isolation, and community, touching on universal human themes that are less fabricated stories than impressions of life at a quarter century of age, the album exposes a depth of honesty that outstrips the simplified nomadic troubadour image of his past. Songs are no longer about imagining places you haven’t been; they’re about places of which we are all extremely familiar, perhaps too familiar. This dramatic shift expands Beirut’s palate as Condon has coated serious lyrics with his greatest tunes ever. The second track, “Santa Fe,” is the best pop song he has yet written, a jumpy ode to the town of his youth, and an early sign that The Rip Tide is all about the staycation.

Listen to The Rip Tide in its entirety now at NPR Music, and share “Santa Fe” stream.

STREAM BEIRUT’S THE RIP TIDE   | SANTA FE

The physical release of the album will be available in three formats in the US:

LIMITED Edition Deluxe CD - Available primarily at independent record shops and directly from the band, this package will come in a book styled format, entirely cloth bound setting off the gold foil stamping.

LIMITED Edition Deluxe LP - Beautifully clothbound - as per the deluxe CD with gold foil stamped lettering. The LP will also come with a collectable postcard designed by Perrin Cloutier of the band and MP3 download code.

Standard CD DIGIPAK - In a book style format w/gold foil stamped lettering.

As previously announced, Beirut will be touring in support of The Rip Tide. Joining Zach Condon (ukulele, trumpet, piano, vocals) on the road is Perrin Cloutier (accordion, piano), Paul Collins (electric bass, upright bass), Ben Lanz (trombone, piano, tuba), Nick Petree (drums), and Kelly Pratt (trumpet, euphonium).

The Felice Brothers Announce 9/29 Show at Webster Hall

On the heels of two sold-out shows at Brooklyn, NY's The Bell House last week, The Felice Brothers have announced a September 29th headlining show at New York City's Webster Hall. Tickets for the show will go on-sale this Thursday, May 26th at 12pm ET. The band, whose live show was deemed "dark, rowdy, and mesmerizing" by SPIN, wrapped up their two-month spring tour with The Bell House shows and will continue playing throughout the summer, next up at Brighton Music Hall in Boston, MA, on Friday.

The Felice Brothers' fourth LP Celebration, Florida arrived in stores on May 10th via Fat Possum and continues to catch attention from press outlets including The A.V. Club, Billboard, Cowbell, Maxim, The New York Daily News, SPIN, Time Out New York, and The Wall Street Journal. The band's striking Ian Cinco-directed video for lead single "Ponzi" premiered on The A.V. Club earlier this month and can now also be seen and shared via here. Copyright Criminals Airs on November 29th on PBS

Copyright Criminals, the acclaimed documentary that charts the history of sampling in hip-hop and its modern clashes with outdated copyright law, will air on PBS’ Emmy Award-winning series “Independent Lens” the week of Nov. 29 (check local listings).

The film features in-depth interviews with Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Hank Shocklee, De La Soul, funk pioneer George Clinton, James Brown’s “Funky Drummer” Clyde Stubblefield, producer Steve Albini and many others.

Filmmakers Benjamin Franzen and Kembrew McLeod showcase not only hip-hop sampling’s pioneering artists, but also those whose work has been sampled thoroughly. Ultimately, they ask how should we fix our copyright laws to both encourage creativity with 21st century tools and still ensure that “original” creators get paid for their work?

The broadcast comes as creative technology advances on a near-weekly basis. When the last copyright law was passed in 1998, only 26 percent of homes had Internet access. Today, young people can film, soundtrack, edit and distribute movies globally, all from their mobile phones.

Meanwhile, artists like Girl Talk are shining bright lights on issues of copyright and creativity. Girl Talk’s new album, All Day, released for free Nov. 15, includes more than 350 samples.

Copyright Criminals’ innovative visuals include video remixes by Eclectic Method that illustrate for the viewer precisely what snippets of sound they’re hearing in dense sampling collages.

The film, which Rolling Stone’s Rob Sheffield called “amazing,” was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. USA Today called Copyright Criminals “a compelling and insightful documentary illuminating both sides of a hotly debated issue.”

Director and producer Benjamin Franzen is the owner of the Atlanta-based production company Changing Images. Executive producer and writer Kembrew McLeod is an associate professor of communications studies at the University of Iowa, and author of Freedom of Expression®: Resistance and Repression in the Age of Intellectual Property, among other books.

Kristy Lee Announces NYC Debut

After tearing up the South on her latest tour, Kristy Lee takes the phrase of "Go Big or Go Home" to heart for her New York City debut.
On Thursday, December 2nd, 2010 Kristy Lee will go on a 1-Night Only THREE Performance Bender to show NYC music lovers her Folk-Soul Spunk with two acoustic sets, & one guest appearance.
WHO IS KRISTY LEE?
That mighty rumble you hear coming out of Alabama is none other than Kristy Lee. Her voice like thunder, rolling in before a sweet southern rain, instantly washes the world away. Kristy Lee's unique rhythms are absolutely nourishing, clean, pure, and unapologetic. This woman means it when she takes her voice out to play! This Alabama girl can pack a house in any state. Tough luck sticking her in a category, because when it comes to writing songs, she has no limits!

Great American Taxi announces Boulder charity event

Great American Taxi will host a night of music at the historic Boulder Theater here to raise money for the Mark Vann Foundation charity.  In its eighth year running, the holiday benefit concert this year includes Great American Taxi, Todd Snider, Bill McKay Band, Bonfire Dub, Shannon McNally & Hot Sauce and others.

“It’s our own little way of keeping alive and nurturing the joyous spirit of Mark Vann,” said Chad Staehly, executive director of the foundation and keyboardist/singer for Great American Taxi. Vann, the banjo player for the Boulder-based band Leftover Salmon, died in 2002; the foundation in his name assists various nonprofit groups.

This year funds will directly benefit There With Care and CareConnect.  Previous beneficiaries include Rock-the-Earth, The Rex Foundation, Tipitinas Foundation Artist Relief Fund, ConservationValue, Community Food Share (Boulder & Broomfield Counties' Food Bank), The Music Maker Relief Foundation, The Van Go Mobile Arts Project and JAMS, and the Steam Powered Preservation Society.

The evening also includes an art exhibit and silent auction. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $20. People are encouraged to wear a fun or favorite hat.

Great American Taxi, revered as one of the most energetic country-, rock- and bluegrass-influenced Americana bands in the land, is currently in the midst of its Fall Harvest tour, playing with some of the most innovative and acclaimed players currently on the jamband/newgrass and Americana scenes.
