In the beginning, a father passed away and a child was born. Luther and Cody Dickinson lost their father, Memphis music legend Jim Dickinson, only months before Luther became one. Jim had always told them, “You need to be playing music together. You are better together than you will ever be apart.” Coincidentally, the Dickinson brothers were not together when Jim passed. At that moment, they were both off on their own, Luther with The Black Crowes and Cody with the Hill Country Revue.

Mogwai Premieres New Album Track "San Pedro"

Mogwai premiered “San Pedro,” another stellar track from the amazingly titled new album, Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, which is set to be released on February 15, 2011 on Sub Pop Records in North America, and through the band’s very own label in the UK, Rock Action Records.

The track “Rano Pano” from the upcoming album will also be released as a 7” single on January 18th via Sub Pop, with the non-album track “Hasenheide” as the B-side. And if you pre-order the album on SubPop.com you get a pair of earplugs, and for anyone that has been to a Mogwai gig knows, this is the perfect accompaniment gift! Rock Action will release “Mexican Grand Prix” as a single on February 7th, along with the non-album b-side “Slight Domestic.”

The Builders & The Butchers: 'Lullaby' Song Premiere

Today The Builders and the Butchers premiered "Lullaby," the first song off their upcoming third album Dead Reckoning, on My Old Kentucky Blog. The urgent, ominous track can now be heard and downloaded here. Dead Reckoning will be released February 22nd, 2011 on Badman Recording Co.

The Builders will also head out on tour in support of friends Murder By Death early next month. The month-long string of dates begins February 1st at Cosmic Charlie's in Lexington, KY, and wraps up February 20th at The Waiting Room in Omaha, NE, and includes a hometown album release show February 15th at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, OR.

Dead Reckoning is a bold and dynamic set of 12 tracks, a raucous musical blend that culls from folk, back porch bluegrass, and unplugged blues. Led by Ryan Sollee's fervent vocals and the big drum sound of the deconstructed kit split between Brandon Hafer and Ray Rude, the album ranges from pounding anti-anthems to more subdued, haunting tracks to gospel-tinged laments. Sollee, writing against the backdrop of the recent downturn, found himself relating to and drawing inspiration from American music of the 1930s. The timeless songs on Dead Reckoning follow suit, weaving gothic stories with common threads like absolute good and evil, addiction, religion, and the father and the son. The album was recorded predominantly live over eight days in Portland with the help of Adam Selzer (The Decemberists, M. Ward, She & Him) and engineer Dylan Magierek (Mark Kozelek, Starfucker, Thao Nguyen), in effort to finally capture the unbridled energy of The Builders' renowned live show.

Andy Friedman prepares 'Laserbeams And Dreams' CD

On April 5, 2011, artist and songwriter Andy Friedman will release his third studio album, Laserbeams and Dreams (City Salvage Records).  Produced by noted guitarist and producer David Goodrich (Chris Smither, Peter Mulvey), the album was recorded in Friedman’s Brooklyn neighborhood and cut in 24 hours with one overdub and mixed in the studio.  Complementing Friedman’s “art-damaged, ragged-but-right” (L.A. Weekly) approach and Goodrich’s restrained, atmospheric lead guitar and piano is rising-star upright bassist and composer Stephan Crump (Grammy®-nominated Vijay Iyer Trio, Jim Campilongo), whose latest album of “ingenious originals” (The New Yorker), Reclamation (recorded with his Rosetta Trio), NPR spotlighted among its top five jazz albums of 2010. The interplay of Friedman’s “engagingly singular” (Philadelphia Inquirer) songwriting and “slow, lugubrious, dipped in country heartache” (Hartford Advocate) strum with Crump’s “full, appealingly wooden sound” (The New York Times) calls to mind classic collaborations by Van Morrison with bassist Richard Davis on 1968’s Astral Weeks, or John Hartford and Dave Holland on 1972’s Morning Bugle Call — albums also recorded live in the studio without much pre-conceived musical planning.  “We captured the mood created,” says Friedman.  “It wasn’t our place to second-guess the results.”

Andy Friedman first hit the road as a self-described “Slideshow Poet” in 2002, leaving his day job as an office assistant in the Editorial Department at The New Yorker to accompany projections of his paintings, drawings, and Polaroids with readings of his poetry in dive bars and rock clubs around the nation.  The hybrid performance was applauded by journalists as “the coolest show to come around in a long time” (Good Times [Santa Cruz]), and introduced Friedman as “The King of Art Country” (City Pages [Minneapolis]).  The transition from traveling poet to rambling musician occurred when the “erudite redneck” (Boston Globe) picked up the guitar and sang for the first time in his life in 2005, shortly before recording his debut album, Taken Man (City Salvage Records), the title track of which landed at #30 on a New York Post “Best Songs” list that included over 200 hits by artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Andrew Bird, Amy Winehouse, and The National.

Friedman’s reputation as a “dusty, paint-splattered Americana sage” (Rochester News & Democrat) germinated with the release of the CD Weary Things (City Salvage Records) in 2009, garnering enthusiastic praise, a performance on NPR’s coveted Mountain Stage, a feature interview on XM’s Bob Edwards Show, and a growing audience.  The online cultural journal Slant hailed Friedman as “an arrival of one of the genre’s smartest and deepest talents.” His “hard-tack country originals” were described in The New Yorker as “the mark of a true artist,” while NoDepression.com called his songs “unforgettable.” Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor proffered the song “Weary Things” as a “certified, genuine American tune,” and Indie-icon Sufjan Stevens proclaimed, “I think the world of Andy Friedman. I’ve always wanted to be Andy Friedman.” Largely overlooked, Weary Things was highlighted alongside titles by Tom Waits and Chuck Prophet by the Associated Press among “The Best Overlooked Albums of 2009.” “Friedman can write a lyric, and he can deliver it,” declared Stephen Wine. “He is not to be overlooked, that’s for sure.”

Laserbeams and Dreams tackles themes of religion, aging, disillusionment, and family, but images of death prevail in all forms. The gospel dirge “Time for Church” is the album’s opener, and finds Friedman renouncing religion in favor of drink, music, and art.  “It’s time for church/It’s five o’clock,” he sings. “Pour a drink/let the record play.” Friedman’s vocals boom with an echo recalling the classic Nashville Sound recorded by Chet Atkins at RCA in the late ’50s and ’60s. The lilting “Motel on the Lake” presents death as the crumbling façade of a once vibrant Catskill Mountain summer resort community more famously referred to as the Borscht Belt, which the singer now reports “whips the children.” Goodrich brings haunting upright piano to “May I Rest When Death Approaches,” a song based on a series of poems written by Friedman’s father-in-law days before his passing.  “Roll On, John Herald” is at once a tribute to the late John Herald — a founding member of the seminal late-’50s bluegrass trio the Greenbriar Boys, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the summer of 2005 — and a humbling, dark portrayal of life as an obscure legend on the road. “When Vin played him on Idiot’s Delight/I knew John Herald had died,” growls Friedman, who befriended the singer when Herald invited the then “slideshow poet” to open a string of dates in 2003.  In “Quiet Blues,” recorded minutes after the ferocious “Roll On, John Herald,” Friedman laments with newfound vocal sensitivity the death of peace and quiet in the digital age.  “Hey, Command Z/bring the quiet blues back to me,” he warbles. “Recording those two songs without a break was like a biathlon,” says Friedman. Singer-songwriter Jen Chapin, who is married to Crump, lent the guitar played by her father — the late Harry Chapin — to Friedman for the recording of Laserbeams and Dreams.

It’s not all death and despair for Friedman, who approaches these themes with the acerbic wit and dark humor of a New Yorker gag cartoon — a pastime with which the singer has found past success under the pseudonym Larry Hat. With “Going Home (Drifter’s Blessing),” Friedman delivers an anthem for the little-known folksinger trying to make it out on the road, whose faith in himself is tested by long drives, missed family, and dismal turnouts, but can only wish the life on his children and theirs.  In “Down by the Willow,” the album’s closer, Friedman is seduced by the serenity of life in the country but is “shackled and chained” to the gritty confines of the city, revisiting the famous car wash scene from the 1967 Paul Newman classic Cool Hand Luke.

Friedman will perform the record in its entirety, accompanied by David Goodrich and Stephan Crump, on select dates during the Laserbeams and Dreams tour.

The Roots Invite Gary Wilson to Play on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

We are all in for an exciting treat, as on October 27th, Gary Wilson will be joining Questlove and The Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon! While you might think of him as the king of weird, there is no denying that Gary Wilson hits home with his honest, sincere, and sometimes even creepy musings on life and love, set to his special mix of funk, avant-garde jazz, and AM Gold inflected tunes. It's no wonder Gary's fan-base includes folks like Beck ("... My man Gary Wilson rocks the most." - Beck on Odelay's "Where It's At") , Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Stones Throws' Peanut Butter Wolf, and The Roots' Questlove. The collaboration of Gary and Questlove will certainly be something exceptional, particularly given that Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is known for its bizarre sketches.

Gary will also be in New York for CMJ, playing October 19th at Cake Shop, following O'Death.

To celebrate his performance on Late Night, along with his CMJ show, Gary is giving fans an Mp3 of "In The Night", off of his anticipated LP release, Electric Endicott.

Electric Endicott is due out digitally on October 26th, with a street date of November 9th, 2010, on Western Vinyl.

Chris Shiflett & The Dead Peasants: Debut Self-Titled Album Out 7/13/10

Chris Shiflett & The Dead Peasants is a new project from Shiflett, already known as the lead guitarist for Foo Fighters and the frontman for Jackson United. Steeped in his love for classic country artists (Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings), rockabilly (Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran), and deep-rooted rock bands (The Rolling Stones, The Replacements), this new album is packed with soulful pedal steel- and twang guitar-accented songs. The album highlights his talent and versatility not only as a skillful guitarist, but also as a songwriter. These infectious Americana-laced rock songs are some of the best he's penned, from the chiming keys and buoyant, ringing guitars of "Get Along" to the pedal steel- and mandolin-lined heartache of "Bandaged," and from the spry, Old 97s-ian "Baby, Let It Out" to the rueful country swing of "Death March."

Shiflett wrote the songs on Chris Shiflett & The Dead Peasants over the course of 2008-9, inspiration first striking when a friend asked him to perform at Orange County's punk-rockabilly Hootenanny festival in 2008. After re-immersing himself in his Americana and old country music collection to prepare a short set - and then playing a brief acoustic tour with friend Joey Cape of Lagwagon - he began writing what eventually became the new album. Recorded at the Foo Fighters' Studio 606 in Los Angeles, CA, this past December and January, the core band on Chris Shiflett & The Dead Peasants is Shiflett (vocals, guitar), 606 house engineer John Lousteau (drums, in addition to engineering), and Derek Silverman (keyboards). The album's additional instrumentation was performed by an array of fine musicians, including Davey Faragher (Elvis Costello and The Imposters, Jenny Lewis, John Hiatt) on bass, Greg Leisz (Wilco, Lucinda Williams, Whiskeytown) on pedal steel, Stevie Blacke (Beck, Weezer, Colbie Caillat) on violin and mandolin, and Audra Mae on backing vocals.

BoomBox Cancels Eureka show due to death in family

Due to a passing of a family member, BoomBox has regretfully canceled their set for tonight’s show at the Nocturnum, in Eureka, CA to briefly return home to attend a funeral and spend time with family. However, because of the overwhelming support the group has received on the West Coast, performances in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego will remain scheduled as planned.

Godchaux explains, “I want to thank everyone for the support on this West Coast run. We are really honored to share what we all share together at shows.” He continues, “My family’s encouragement and your support led us to the decision to return back to California on Thursday (October 8th) to perform in San Francisco and finish the remainder of the tour.”

Fans planning on attending the show in Eureka will still be treated to a night of music from Ana Sia who has been touring with BoomBox on this West Coast tour and are encouraged to make the trip to San Francisco to see BoomBox perform on Thursday, October 8th at the Independent.

Everest announces fall tour dates w/ Neil Young, Wilco & Death Cab for Cutie

Everest will warm stages for some greats this fall. The LA boys have been handpicked to be the steady opening guest for Neil Young's fall tour.

Everest will open for Neil dates with Death Cab for Cutie from October 14 through November 5 on the West Coast and East Coast with Wilco from November 29 through the tour's conclusion at Madison Square Garden on December 15th.

This weekend the band will perform at the Outside Lands Festival on August 23rd in San Francisco and will wind their way around the Northwest with a string of tour dates.
