'GYPSY JAZZ FAMILY TRIBUTE' at The Django Reinhardt NY Festival

"Gypsy Jazz" is a family tradition passed on from one generation to another and so it was with the SCHMITT family coming from the Strasbourg area of  France, near Germany.  George, father of legendary gypsy guitarist Dorado Schmitt, while virtually unknown for his talent as guitarist and violinist outside the area he lived, taught his son Dorado who taught his sons Samson and now young Amati only 14 years old...keeping the tradition of hot gypsy jazz alive.  To all of them, Django Reinhardt was a God of music in whose footsteps all gypsy musicians walked.

To see Dorado, Samson and Amati (who will debuted in the US at the Festival ) is to see how it all works, side by side.   It is in the family blood, a part of the customs and culture, a sharing and passing down from one member to another....very much a part of gypsy life.  George Schmitt passed away this year and so the Django Reinhardt NY Festival celebrates his influence on his family thru music. Birdland will host the Schmitt Family Tribute, performing in memory of of the elder George Schmitt. The Festival is Produced by Pat Philips and Ettore Stratta and going into its 11th year and has taken the US by storm thru tours connected to the Festival each year which has taken stars of the Festival to the Kennedy Center, Disney Hall in LA, The San Franciso Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Chicago Symphony Hall, Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and much more.  It has caused a resurgence of 'gypsy jazz' in America with other festivals and concerts springing up all over, greatly due to the enormous talent of lead gypsy guitarist, legendary Dorado Schmitt who has been a part of the presentations for over 9 years and will be here again this November.

The Schmitts will be joined by bassist Xavier Nikq and violinist Pierre Blanchard from France and master jazz pianist Peter Beets from Holland.  As always there will be a Special Guest each night starting with renowned Russian cellist Borislav Strulev opening night Nov. 2 who will perform "Nuages", Django's most important composition, with an arrangement by top musician Roger Kellaway.  On Nov. 3rd will be swinging saxist Anat Cohen, Nov. 4th beautiful young talent Miguel Zenon also on sax , Nov. 5th Colombian jazz harpist Edmar Castaneda returning by special demand, Nov. 6th David Langlois on washboard percussion, and the fabulous Joel Frahm on sax Nov. 7th.  The beautiful and wonderful vocalist Hilary Kole will step in as well as a surprise on some nights.

George Schmitt may not be a 'star', but his family will shine on him brightly this year at the Django Reinhardt NY Festival at Birdland.  HOT GYPSY JAZZ dating back to the 20's and 30's in Europe when great gypsy guitarist DJANGO REINHARDT met and performed with virtuoso violinist STEPHANE GRAPPELLI changed music forever and created the one of the most memorable musical partnerships in musical history.  This will all be re-created at Birdland Nov. 2-7 and remains music that is ever exciting, creative, original in style and very cutting edge while it still incorporates beautiful melody and romance through the brilliant virtuosity of the players.

On sale at the Festival will be the new CD, Dorado Schmitt and The Django Reinhardt NY Festival Allstars "Live at the Kennedy Center".

Special Guest: Curtis Stigers

If voices, like wines, had noses, Curtis Stigers’ would be dusky oak with hints of Willie Nelson, Harry Nilsson, Ray Charles and Matt Dennis. It’s a voice that’s at once young and old, tender and tough, warm and inviting as a caress, yet sturdy as a firm handshake.  -Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes

Curtis Stigers is at the forefront of a new generation of jazz singers with one of the most distinctive voices in music...Downbeat Magazine named him as one of the jazz genre’s “Rising Male Stars”.  He has toured the world with such renowned pop artists as Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, and Prince, while collaborating with  jazz greats  Nancy Wilson, George Benson, Herbie Hancock, Randy and Michael Brecker, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Chris Potter, Larry Goldings and Toots Thielmans.   Crossing from Pop to Jazz, he has been  called “one of the best male jazz singers of his generation” by JazzTimes.  Stigers's latest critically acclaimed recording, "Lost In Dreams," on Concord Jazz, was released in September 2009.

Re the music of DJANGO, STIGERS says" I just love the Django recordings.  Something just kills me about it and I can hear myself singing in that sound!"

DJANGO and GRAPPELLI met in the 30's in France to form The Hot Club  Quintette which took Europe by storm  and went on to become one of  the  most important musical partnerships in European history with a  hot jazz rendition of American pop standards, influenced by Ellington,  Armstrong and the like...Gypsy Jazz is still on the cutting edge and enjoying  enormous success around the world.  Young musicians as well as more  established are digging into Django's music , a torrent of guitar lines  on special string guitars with sounds all their own, easily  recognizable, virtuosic, hot and romantic.

Celebrity musicians and actors admire the music such as Leonardo DiCaprio who's dog is named Django, Sean Penn who starred in Woody Allen's  film "Sweet and Lo Down" about this music, Willie Nelson records it,  Tony Bennett wrote a lyric to Nuages, the most famous Django composition ... and more.

"Feb 1,2,3, is the  Centennial Celebration at one of NY's most important venues..."Historymaking  at THE IRIDIUM'  marking a music and master that continues to fascinate, inspire and bring joy...one  that has endured the test of time...and is still swinging!

10th Anniversary DJANGO REINHARDT NY FESTIVAL @ Birdland

Launched in 2000, The DJANGO REINHARDT NY FESTIVAL, the brainstorm of producers Pat Philips & Ettore Stratta, has become one of the most successful and highly anticipated annual musical events in the NY area with people flying in from all over the country to see some of the best ‘HOT JAZZ’ in the world. Ahmet Ertegun, who was a revered giant in the record industry, attended that 1st year and remarked ‘that he hadn’t seen that much excitement in a club since his early days in NYC”.  He went on to release a CD of 2000 which included Bireli Lagrene, Jimmy Rosenberg, and Babik (Django’s only son), his only recording in the US. The festival is dedicated to the memory of dear friend HANS MEELEN who turned the producers on to his great love of this music!

2009 marks the 10th Anniversary held at its official home, Birdland.  Hot Gypsy Jazz lives on!  Django, who was the partner of virtuoso Jazz Violinist Stephane Grappelli in the 30’s  and 40’s in Europe with  their Hot Club Quintette, left an indelible mark on music which continues on in the hands of thousands of top musicans around the world including stars such as Willie Nelson. Tony Bennett has written an English lyric to Django’s most famous song “Nuages”.

Gypsy Jazz is just that! It is Jazz coming out of the Gypsy life where children at three can be holding guitars while fathers and grandfathers sit  around and  play, many times in the caravans.  It is music passed from one generation to the other with love, amongst family, taken to the parks, streets, and boites, and as it became accepted as important music –  went to established clubs and concert halls where it is today, almost 100 years later.

Appearing will be the legendary TCHAVOLO SCHMITT, his first time at Birdland. Born in a gypsy family, living in Strasbourg, France, he epitoimizes ‘a swing of madness’ combined with romantic emotion.  He is joined by his nephew, SAMSON SCHMITT, a regular at the Festival where he grew up alongside his Dad, DORADO SCHMITT, who will return to NY on February 2nd in an important concert ending a US tour celebrating DJANGO’s ‘100th Birthday” also produced by Philips and Stratta.

ANDREAS OBERG, from Stockholm, is one of the most fluent young stylists on the guitar playing today. LUDOVIC BEIER, a real virtuoso from Paris, has also been a regular  at  the Festival playing Accordion and Accordina – a rare instrument that  is a cross between a harmonica and the accordion. Add to this community of musicians, AURORE VOILQUE, young female Violinist from  France, her first time to the US who became  part of the Manouche Jazz scene in Paris playing with all the great swing artists.  On Rhythm Guitar, which is vitally important to ‘hot jazz’, is Ted Gottsegan living in nearby Queens who has performed with the top players of this music including Robin Nolan.

A very adventurous part of the evening is when, each night, a US jazz musician steps in as special guest.  Most times, unless a repeat appearance, the players meet this guest for the first time and magic erupts bringing smiles to the faces of the musicians and audience alike. It is sometimes very daring but fun for the US artists to join into this excitement without rehearsal. Basically a few #’s are called backstage and ‘away we go’. That is the freedom of this Festival where anything can happen and does. Improvisation on all fronts abounds and creates surprises and a great time for all.

The Django Reinhardt NY Festival Featuring 'The Young Lions of Gypsy Jazz 'at Birdland

Django Reinhardt- for the Grateful Web

The Django Reinhardt NY Festival carries on the legacy of the virtuoso gypsy guitarist DJANGO REINHARDT and his 'hot swing' style of playing that started a musical revolution in France and the world in the 30's and 40's when he teamed with master Jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli in the Hot Club Quintette!

The Festival, produced by Pat Philips and Ettore Stratta, goes into gear with a sizzling cast featuring young players.  Many of "The Young Lions of Gypsy Jazz" come from Europe starting with SAMSON SCHMITT from France, son of legendary gypsy guitarist DORADO SCHMITT – this year Samson comes on his own.

ANDREAS OBERG hails from Sweden and is a virtuoso 'rock star' of the gypsy guitar.  We are delighted to present him at the Festival for the first time on the heels of his new CD just out on Resonance Records.  LUDOVIC BEIER, a regular from Paris, is an accordion and accordina master along with being an accomplished Composer… a bright star on the horizon!

Joining the band is TIMBO, French swing violinist and regular of Samson's band in Europe along with 18-year old BRONSON, rhythm player and younger brother of Samson coming to the US for the first time. KRUNO SPISIC, from Philadelphia, a swinging gypsy guitar player, with movie-star appeal, returns to Birdland to wow the audiences.  Add to all this the new American gypsy band, The HOT CLUB of DETROIT made up of 5 young musicians who have deep Jazz Gypsy roots and swing like mad! Their new CD is on Mack Avenue Records.

The veteran of the group is bassist BRIAN TORFF. He plays a mean bass and holds everything together as Musical Director.

Every year, we have a Jazz great from this side of the ocean as a Special Guest each night including JOEL FRAHM who plays the sax as hot hot as it can be.  EDMAR CASTANEDA, virtuoso on the Colombian Jazz Harp, brings an original excitement to the music.  HOWARD LEVY is a Harmonica Master (classical and Jazz) whose rip-roaring technique and personality are a great match for the gypsies.
