Blue Turtle Seduction & the New Up: Set to Rock San Fran

Aptly named “The Blue Up Ball,” the split ticket performance of Blue Turtle Seduction and The New Up at The Independent in San Francisco on Memorial Day Weekend is sure to leave fans with their own memories of an already celebrated weekend. Set for May 23, Blue Turtle Seduction will make their only San Francisco appearance of the spring and summer, sharing the stage with San Francisco-based The New Up. The bands look to prove they are anything but genre-specific. Blue Rabbit will open the night up and Jack Frost will spin set breaks, which means the night should, in true Blue Turtle Seduction fashion, be full of debauchery and good times.

btsFor the spring months of 2009, Blue Turtle Seduction has been zig-zagging across the country, playing nearly night after night, building huge momentum and impeccable stage timing. By the time the band unpacks in San Francisco, fans can expect awesome interpretations of the acclaimed, recent digital release of 13 Floors. The band emanates dance vibes with intelligence through their bluegrass meets rock; gypsy folk meets hip-hop, raucous, fresh sound. The band is known well on the circuit for putting on an entertaining show through their multi-faceted performance.

The South Lake Tahoe, CA, band is Jay Seals (guitar, vocals), Glenn Stewart (harmonica, pan flute, vocals), Christian Zupancic (violin, mandolin, vocals), Stephen Seals (bass) and Adam Navone (drums). Expressing influences from Manu Chao to The String Cheese Incident to The Clash, the five-piece prides themselves on eclecticism and variation, which has afforded them the luxury of sharing the bill with a ranging cast of bands and performers across the nation.

The New Up, an up-and-coming act, is ES Pitcher on guitar and the mic, with Noah Reid on guitar, Hawk West on flute and automation, Dain Dizazzo on bass and Drew Bertrand on drums. Their sound has been called everything from trippy new wave with irresistible vocals to post-punk-brushed dance-rock. Pitcher’s voice is big, but sweet; brash, but true. Their live show combines catchy tunes with gritty guitars and polished changes, an inspiration of new sound. The band is celebrating their recent May EP release, Better Off, the second of three EPs the band is releasing in an 18-month stretch.

Opening up “The Blue Up Ball” is San Francisco’s own Blue Rabbit, a seven-piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble that fuses alternative indie pop with baroque elements, modern rhythms and a hint of cabaret. The band won Artist of the Month on The Deli SF in Dec. '08 and was ranked as one of the top five most popular bands in the Bay Area.

The Blue Note Years: The Photography Of Francis Wolff & Jimmy Katz

Spring, 2009 JazzPrezzo proudly announces the release of The Blue Note Years: The Photography Of Francis Wolff and Jimmy Katz in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Blue Note Records, the most important record label in the history of jazz.

John-ColtraneThis elegant coffee table book, including two CDs of music, spans an incredible seventy years of the label, from its beginnings to the present, through the eyes of two master photographers. The images, many of them never seen before, capture the major artists in modern jazz at historic recording sessions and other contexts. In recognition of this unique collection, the Jewish Museum of Berlin plans a special exhibition of photographs from the book for the fall of 2009.

Designed by award winning designer Ingo Wolff, the book features essays by producer Michael Cuscuna,  Blue Note president Bruce Lundvall, recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder, and jazz historian Ashley Kahn.

Wolff’s Rolleiflex caught each important development from traditional and swing-era styles of the 40’s through bebop, hard bop, soul, avant-garde, and even the first sounds of fusion.

Photographs include jazz legends  Sidney Bechet and Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey and Horace Silver, Miles Davis and Clifford Brown, and Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane, breadth staggering in its historical importance.  The story continues with jazz greats Jackie McLean, Herbie Hancock, Dexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Grant Green, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Andrew Hill, Cassandra Wilson and Joe Lovano.

Wolff’s iconic black and white photographs, intimate, relaxed, and respectful of the musicians and their craft, raised jazz players to a heroic level. His point of view endures today: musicians intensely working on their instruments, peering at sheet music or talking among themselves, playing the music with eyes gazing off into space or closed in musical rapture.

In the early nineties, Blue Note found Wolff’s spiritual descendant in Jimmy Katz whose style has its own distinctive signature. Like Wolff, Katz can catch the right moment, frame it, light it and shoot it in a fraction of a second. Their careers have run along parallel lines: both picked up the camera early, fell under the spell of jazz, and established a mature, visual signature. Like a Wolff image, a Katz portrait is instantly recognizable.

Ashley Kahn writes, “Seeing, as the saying goes, is believing. In the photography of both Wolff and Katz there is a deep, shared reverence for the music, captured in a way that makes us all fortunate witnesses to some private and truly historic moments.”  Bruce Lundvall comments, “This book is the nicest 70th Anniversary gift that Blue Note could get.”

Blue Turtle Seduction: 16 States for 13 Floors Tour

blue-turtleBlue Turtle Seduction is no stranger to the road - and now their upcoming “16 States, 13 Floors Tour,” leads them across 16 states in support of their digital release of 13 Floors, proof this touring juggernaut is primed to give the fans ample opportunity to hear the latest tunes featured on the release. The bluegrass, folk, hip-hop and rock ensemble will kick off the tour in Sparks, Nevada, on April 18 before making their way through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota and several others before heading back west with a finale in Dunsmuir, CA, at Sengthong’s Blue Sky Room on May 16, less than a month after the tour kicks off.

Hailing from South Lake Tahoe, CA, the band released the digital version of their album 13 Floors on Feb. 10. Perhaps the truest encapsulation of the essence of the band, this release pieces influences from The String Cheese Incident to Duran Duran to The Clash into a 13 track good vibe record. Since forming in 2001, the band has worked to bring the good mountain vibes together with the easy living vibes of the coast of California. The album is at times rock, at times bluegrass, occasionally hip-hop and gypsy folk at the core. The album showcases each musician equally, with intricate undertones of a deeper side of the band. Dennis Cook of JamBase.com said of the album in a Sept. 2008 review, “… 13 Floors is a good time, plain and simple, and a finely crafted studio effort that hints at their true depths.”

Featuring Jay Seals (guitar, vocals) Glenn Stewart (harmonica, pan flute, vocals), Christian Zupancic (violin, mandolin, vocals), Stephen Seals (bass) and Adam Navone (drums), the band met while working at a resort in South Lake Tahoe. Their combined effort on-stage leaves no opportunity for crowds to just stand there, but rather, get down and dance. Big smiles and high energy typify a Blue Turtle Seduction show, all the while spreading the socially aware message the band has grown to be known for.

Already the band has worked up thrilling stage interpretations of the songs off of 13 Floors, so fans should expect to hear the album in variation at stops along the 16-state run. And further expect those songs to lead into jam sessions, then falling back into chorus. Several highlights on this tour include the Norman Music Festival and the Hemp Hoe Down, as well as sharing bills with Oakhurst, That One Guy, Madahoochi, 56 Hope Road and Pert Her Sandstone. Spring is a great time for a road trip and Blue Turtle Seduction is really looking forward to this one.

Toubab Krewe @ Blue Nile!

toubabBlending American and West African influences into a sound of its own, Toubab Krewe has set "a new standard for fusions of rock 'n' roll and West African music" (Afropop Worlwide). Toubab Krewe developed their unique sound over the course of numerous extended trips to Mali, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast, where they immersed themselves in the local culture and studied and performed with luminaries of the West African musical tradition.

The band's name in itself speaks volumes about their musical quest. In several West African languages, including Bambara and Wolof, Toubab means "foreigner." Krewe is a reference to the New Orleans's Mardi Gras tradition. The musical aptitudes of the members of Toubab Krewe are as unique as the band's name. The group's instrumentation includes kora (21-string harp-lute), kamelengoni (12-string harp-lute), soku (Malian horsehair fiddle), electric guitars, electric bass, drum set and African percussion.

Since forming in 2005, the magnetic instrumental quintet from Asheville, North Carolina has won a diverse and devoted following at performances everywhere from Bonnaroo to the legendary Festival of the Desert in Essakane, Mali, known as the most remote festival in the world. Toubab Krewe has created a winning blend of guitar rock 'n' roll and traditional West African music for a sound that the Village Voice describes as "a futuristic, psychedelic, neo-griot frenzy" and Honest Tune hails as "one of the most innovative voices in music today."

Don't miss the magic of Toubab Krewe's African dance grooves at Blue Nile!

Blue Turtle Seduction Releases 13 Floors for Valentine's

The fresh musical movement known as Blue Turtle Seduction is a two-fold sonic experience. Both musically and socially aware, the five-piece rock / bluegrass / reggae / hip-hop hybrid creates music that defies classification. Embodying the essence of South Lake Tahoe, CA, Blue Turtle Seduction captures the upbeat, party vibe and jovial ambiance of their hometown. On the strength of their latest release, 13 Floors, BTS is proving themselves to be a mainstay on the musical circuit for years to come.

Featuring Jay Seals (guitar, vocals), Glenn Stewart (harmonica, pan flute, vocals), Christian Zupancic (violin, mandolin, vocals), Stephen Seals (bass), and Adam Navone (drums), the quintet crossed paths while working at a conference resort in the Tahoe Desolation Wilderness Area. The five distinctly unique individuals comprise the Blue Turtle Seduction sound, integrating their worldly flair with their love of all things music. From classical to rock, their refined and dynamic sound has been capturing audiences on a nightly basis.

13 Floors is loaded with trademark Blue Turtle Seduction. Capturing the diversity of the band in fluid stages, the latest release showcases music with purpose. The lyrics and melodies are infused with revelry and the harmonies encourage whole-hearted sing-a-longs. Melodic guitar leads complement the layers of strings and woodwind textures. The rhythm section is groovy and as tight as a snare drum, inevitably leading to a full-fledged dance party. "With each track, the elevator shifts to the side, up, or down, into a slightly different style. But it's all woven together within the Blue Turtle Seduction building; unmistakably us, and an authentic representation of our California blend," says Zupancic. Blue Turtle Seduction's musicianship is second to none and shines through the interplay between the five multi-talented instrumentalists.

In addition to their musical contributions, Blue Turtle Seduction is also involved in several environmental and social organizations as well. Known for their involvement and contributions to many non-profit organizations, BTS is committed to making a difference on all levels. Their tour bus has been converted to run on straight vegetable oil and the 13 Floors release is packaged in all sustainable and biodegradable materials, proving BTS as a leader amongst environmentally conscious artists on the road today.

Already making waves, Blue Turtle Seduction has gigantic plans for 2009. Committed to promoting 13 Floors and bringing the BTS vibe to the masses, the hard-working group has plans to hit western states like California, Utah, Nevada and Colorado, and also making their way to Midwestern and Southern regions from Ohio to Oklahoma. Audiences have been magnetized by the BTS sound and their high-energy live performances. Through high-energy entertainment combined with activism and outreach, BTS is music for not only the socially aware but for those looking for a positively great time.

Nestled between legends such as Radiohead, Lucinda Williams and Joan Baez, 2009 promises to be a big year for this South Lake Tahoe band.
