Ronnie James Dio & Elephant Art Conservation Project

The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up & Shout Cancer Fund has teamed with The Asian Elephant Art & Conservation Project (AEACP) to create one-of-a-kind guitars painted by the project's elephants in Thailand to raise money and awareness for both organizations. Wendy Dio, president and founder of Stand Up & Shout, board chair Gloria Butler and medical director Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, along with legendary Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell bassist Geezer Butler and world-renowned photographer Mark Weiss, are currently in Chiang Mai, Thailand, home to the AEACP, where the guitars are being painted.

The talented elephants of the Asian Elephant Art & Conservation Project, whose paintings are now exhibited and sold in museums and galleries around the world and have been featured in National Geographic, are painting guitars graciously donated by The ESP Guitar Company.  These painted guitars will be auctioned off with half of the proceeds going to AEACP and the other half going to SUAS.

The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund is a privately funded nonprofit organization dedicated to cancer prevention, research and education. It was founded in memory of the late singer who died in 2010. The organization is collecting additional guitars donated by celebrated musicians for a larger fund-raising auction later this year.

The AEACP is dedicated to saving the diminishing number of Asian Elephants and to raise public awareness of the plight of Asian Elephants. National Thai Elephant Day annually celebrates the importance of elephants a part of Thai culture and as part of their environment. Currently, there are between 3,000 and 4,000 elephants living in Thailand, half of which are domesticated.

Christopher Paul Stelling Reveals NYC Residency

Christopher Paul Stelling arrived in New York City in 2008 with nothing but his guitar and a duffel bag. Not necessarily concerned with making a name for himself, circumstance and necessity soon found him singing and playing guitar on the subway platforms. Although he still turns heads while playing in the subway every now and then, Stelling has since graced some of New York’s finest stages, and now we’re thrilled to announce his Rockwood Music Hall residency April, taking place each Tuesday night at 8pm.

CPS also took time to link up with Break Thru Radio to film a compelling video for “Flawless Executioner,” which was recorded in a horse stable near Prospect Park in Brookyln. The video went live today, so head over to BTR and check it out!

The years prior to Stelling’s arrival in Brooklyn had seen him through something of an odyssey. He’s studied under a master guitar builder in Colorado, slept in a closet in North Carolina, managed a used bookstore in Florida, and wandered aimlessly through Seattle, all without a said plan in mind- and completely unaware that something was being stitched together beneath it all.

His guitar playing style would seem more appropriate for a man twice his age, bringing to mind the likes of Leo Kottke, John Fahey, and Sandy Bull. His songwriting reaches deep, tugging emotional heartstrings, all while conjuring up imagery from religion, mythology and folklore.  Having already self-released a 20 song album on his own, and a live session with Daytrotter, his first official full-length is currently in the works.

Upcoming Deerhoof Tour Dates + New CD

Remember what it was like to turn 16? No one could tell you what to do. You were a force to be reckoned with -- filled with the undeniable feeling that you could take on anything and win.

Deerhoof has now reached that fateful age and by rites it’s their turn to go out and challenge the world. And so, right before they began recording, Greg Saunier, Ed Rodriguez, John Dieterich, and Satomi Matsuzaki just up and split from San Francisco (the only home they’ve ever known as a band) and left behind all notions of what a “Deerhoof record sounds like.”

Self-recorded, mixed, and mastered in rehearsal spaces and band members' basements with no engineers or outside input, Deerhoof vs. Evil dresses up Deerhoof's well-known recklessness in a newfound elastic groove -- one flled with big-hit choruses and exuberantly unfamiliar colors.

The musical equivalent of hormones raging out of control, the record explodes out of the speakers with its gawky triumph and inflamed sentimentality.

This is Deerhoof's ode to their own adolescence. This is Deerhoof vs. Evil.

Christopher Paul Stelling: A Songwriter With a Story To Tell

Take one look at his road-worn, weathered guitar, and you know that Christopher Paul Stelling is a musician with a story to tell. With a heartfelt voice, dynamic finger-picked guitar stylings, and a songwriting approach that combines folkloric, mythological, and religious imagery, Stelling has forged a style that is all his own, yet hauntingly familiar. Think along the lines of John Fahey, Tom Waits, and Skip James.

Stelling has a busy few weeks ahead- this Thursday, August 19th, he’ll be appearing on East Village Radio’s Belly of the Beast at 8pm, and next Tuesday, August 24th, you can catch his signature blend of hellfire gospel at New York’s Rockwood Music Hall at 9pm, right after Hoots & Hellmouth.

Stelling has managed to revive a sense of musical storytelling and mastery over his instrument that was thought to be long since forgotten, especially in the modern era. His songs evoke everything from delicate fragility to blistering ferocity-those who witness his live shows are often left in disbelief, and wanting more.

Over the past decade, Stelling has traversed the country exploring the roots of American music. Originally hailing from Daytona Beach, he's since hopped from Boulder to Boston, Orlando to Asheville and everywhere in-between, until deciding to call Brooklyn home. Keep your ears out for a full-length album from Christopher Paul Stelling in 2011.

Upcoming Tour Dates:

August 28th – Brooklyn, NY – Goodbye Blue Monday

September 4th – Butler, PA - Associated Artists of Butler County

October 3rd – Brooklyn, NY – The Rock Shop

AL JARREAU & CHRISTIAN SCOTT
March 27, 8:00PM

Witness one of jazz’s greatest artists and discover a jazz legend in the making. Come see how the genre has evolved over the years as we bring together the classic vocals of jazz great Al Jarreau with the new, fresh sounds of budding trumpeter Christian Scott.

AL JARREAU

Al Jarreau's distinctive voice has enthralled fans for more than 30 years. His passion, emotional honesty and astonishing sound have contributed mightily to the popularity jazz vocals enjoy today. Perhaps more than any popular vocalist, he embodies the notion of the voice as a pure instrument. Recognized with 6 GRAMMY Awards, he is the only vocalist in history to net GRAMMY Awards in three different categories (jazz, pop, and R&B, respectively). Jarreau is considered by many to be the greatest jazz singer alive.

CHRISTIAN SCOTT

Twenty six year old, New Orleans native, Christian Scott is a GEAMMY nominated jazz trumpeter, composer and producer. He has been heralded by JazzTimes magazine as "the Architect of a new commercially viable fusion" and "Jazz's young style God." NPR stated "Christian Scott Ushers in New Era of Jazz." Billboard Magazine called Scott's major label debut, Rewind That "arguably the most remarkable premiere the genre has seen in the last decade." The magazine highlighted Scott as one of the "10 Faces to Watch in 2006" and featured him on its cover twice that year. His critically acclaimed first album earned him the GRAMMY nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album in 2006.

PATTI AUSTIN & TUCK AND PATTI

March 28, 7:30PM

Rounding out a momentous weekend of jazz are two phenomenal acts that are sure to bring the house down. Don't miss the finale of The HSBC Jazz Festival with performances by GRAMMY-Award winning vocalist Patti Austin and power duo Tuck & Patti!

PATTI AUSTIN

Native New Yorker Patti Austin made her professional debut at the Apollo Theater when she was 5 years old. Quincy Jones and Dinah Washington have proclaimed themselves her Godparents. She's had over twenty songs on the Billboard charts. She has sung duets with George Benson, Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, and in 2008 won the GRAMMY for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.

TUCK AND PATTI

If ever a musical pair embodied the term "simpatico" it would be guitarist Tuck Andress and singer Patti Cathcart. More than 20 years into their marriage and musical partnership, Tuck & Patti continue to make beautiful and impressive music together while nicely preserving the art of minimalism. Tuck & Patti aren't your ordinary duet team, however. Patti Cathcart has one of the warmest, richest voices in jazz. Her honey-toned, nimble vocals are matched by her partner and husband Tuck Andress' guitar artistry. With his technique of plucking, strumming and slapping the strings, often with both hands, he makes the guitar sound like several people playing together, not just one.
