GARAGE A TROIS Announce New Album & Tour

On April 12, Garage A Trois will release Always Be Happy, But Stay Evil via Royal Potato Family. Aptly described by photographer John Margaretten as "a transformative, punkalectic, pornographic seizure of sight and sound," the modern day post rock/freak jazz supergroup will support the album with west and east coast tour dates in April and May. Garage A Trois, a force greater than the sum of its colossal parts, is comprised of Seattle-based saxophonics master Skerik, Brooklyn sound-sculptor/keysman Marco Benevento, Texas-born punk rock vibraphone hero Mike Dillon and New Orleans funky drummer/beat scientist Stanton Moore.

Always Be Happy, But Stay Evil follows Garage A Trois' 2009 release, Power Patriot (the band’s debut with Benevento replacing original member Charlie Hunter). In the words of Stanton Moore, "the band set out to capture the highly flammable, rock-driven, avant pop album we all knew we were capable of making." Recorded at Studio In The Country in Bogalusa, LA (where masterpieces by The Neville Brothers, Stevie Wonder and The Wild Magnolias have been cut) with revered engineer/producer Randall Dunn (Cave Singers, Black Mountain, Sun City Girls), Always Be Happy, But Stay Evil is indeed the finest representation yet of the band's sinewy, fourth-dimensional, polychromatic songwriting. It's sure to fuel the fire for a growing legion of fans amassing around the most dangerous instrumental band on the scene today.

Surprise Me Mr. Davis | Summer Dates & 'Bridge Sessions' Segment

Surprise Me Mr. Davis have announced a handful of summer tour dates. The five piece rock band, featuring Nathan Moore, Brad Barr, Marco Benevento, Marc Friedman and Andrew Barr, will come together from their homes in Montreal, Brooklyn and the Shenandoah Valley for ten shows. They'll be supporting their latest EP release, That Man Eats Morning For Breakfast.

The Hidden Track blog noted in a recent live review: "Someone mentioned that it felt like seeing The Band in some club in 1970, and that seemed just about right--there is such skillful songsmithing, such virtuosity in performance, such joy and such a tortured voice in the quintet. The music glows and rolls and speaks as the greatest Americana does of all the back roads and small towns and small rooms in big cities, all the confused relationships, unrequited love and brotherly love. I can't help thinking, whenever Nathan Moore begins some political rant bookended by some semi-comical, semi-forlorn personal ramble, that this is what Walt Whitman would be doing if he were still alive." Jambase stated: "Surprise Me Mr. Davis needs to be recognized as one of the top bands in the live music scene; an appointment that is far overdue and richly deserved."

Upcoming Surprise Me Mr. Davis tour dates are:

June 24 | Tractor Tavern | Seattle, WA (w/ Marco Benevento Trio)
June 25 | Doug Fir Lounge | Portland, OR (w/ Marco Benevento Trio)
June 26 | Axe & Fiddle | Cottage Grove, OR (w/ Marco Benevento Trio)
July 1 | High Sierra | Quincy, CA
July 3 | High Sierra | Quincy, CA
July 6 | Cafe Du Nord | San Francisco, CA
July 7 | Moe's Alley | Santa Cruz, CA
August 19 | Fox Theater | Boulder, CO
August 20 | Three 20 South | Breckenridge, CO
August 21 | Newhoma Music Festival | Florissant, CO

Watch Surprise Me Mr. Davis perform an a-capella rendition the Nathan Moore song "Tombstone" on the Williamsburg Bridge shortly before they took the stage for a headline show in April at New York City's Mercury Lounge. The piece was filmed as a segment for "The Bridge Sessions."

SURPRISE ME MR. DAVIS | THAT MAN EATS MORNING FOR BREAKFAST

Surprise Me Mr. Davis just wrapped a ecstatically energized East Coast run capped off by two very special nights in New York City this past weekend! The band is supporting a new EP, That Man Eats Morning For Breakfast, and while plans are well under way to get back into the studio to record their first full length studio album, this EP, including "Sissyfuss," "Roses In Bottles" and "Joelle," is the place to start.

Surprise Me Mr. Davis Announce EP & Tour Dates

The often elusive American rock and roll band SURPRISE ME MR. DAVIS, comprised by members Nathan Moore, Brad and Andrew Barr, Marc Friedman and Marco Benevento, have announced an April 13 release for their long-awaited EP, THAT MAN EATS MORNING FOR BREAKFAST. On the same day, the band will commence their first shows of 2010 with a five date Northeast run that begins in Boston, stops in Providence and Albany, and concludes with back to back nights in Brooklyn and New York City. Later in the month, they'll play two late night shows during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.  SMMD also plans three dates in the Northwest at the end of June before heading to California for two sets at High Sierra Music Festival.

THAT MAN EATS MORNING FOR BREAKFAST, also known to fans as the "demo sessions," took a circuitous route from seed to market. Nathan Moore explains: "I was on my way with Marc Friedman to Montreal where we were going to record in Brad and Andrew Barr's new studio. Unfortunately, I got turned away at the border. We soon found ourselves back in Burlington, Vermont drinking in a bar. Brett Hughes, a local musician there, was like 'just come into my barn studio and do it.' So Brad and Andrew came down this way and we ended up recording there all week at Brett's house. We got all these tracks done and then we went back into another studio and tried to work them up even bigger, but we started to feel that we were exceeding our initial ideas by trying to make them too big. In the end we reverted back to the original demos. They had the raw spirit and energy we were trying to capture. So now it is finally seeing the light of day."

The seven song EP will be available at all major digital retailers, including iTunes, Amazon and Emusic, while a limited edition CD release will be sold exclusively at the band's shows and through their website.

The track listing for THAT MAN EATS MORNING FOR BREAKFAST is:

1. Roses In Bottles
2. Sissyfuss
3. One Sick Knave
4. I'm No Good At All
5. Emily Green
6. Joelle

Marco Benevento | 'BETWEEN NEEDLES & NIGHTFALL'

Back with his third full length studio album in as many years, Brooklyn-based pianist and sound sculptor MARCO BENEVENTO delivers BETWEEN NEEDLES & NIGHTFALL on May 11 via his label Royal Potato Family.

BETWEEN NEEDLES & NIGHTFALL was initially conceived at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY where engineer Bryce Goggin Marco Benevento (Pavement, Akron/Family) tracked and his trio, including bassist Reed Mathis and drummer Andrew Barr, over three days. The material was drawn from fragments of melodies and song ideas that Benevento had been collecting over the last year. To achieve the colors he envisioned for these compositions, Benevento recorded on a baby grand piano bolstered by guitar pick-ups, amplifiers and a myriad of pedals and circuit bent toys, while overdubbing Moog, Optigan, Mellotron and Farfisa. He then transferred the tracks to his home studio, taking the next two months to cut, loop and shape the pieces into full-fledged songs. Additional drum parts were added by Matt Chamberlain. As a last step, Benevento handed off his work to three of his favorite engineers: Mell Dettmer (Sunn O))), Eyvind Kang), Jesse Lauter (Low Anthem, Elvis Perkins) and Vid Cousins (Amon Tobin, Kid Koala) for final mixes. The results range from the day-glo electro-pop of "It Came From You" to the simply-stated lullaby "Katie's Song" to the shimmering Arcade Fire-meets-Brad Mehldau anthem "Two Of You."

2009 was a breakout year for Marco Benevento. In February, he released Me Not Me, an album featuring interpretations of songs by My Morning Jacket, Leonard Cohen and Deerhoof among others. Touring it across the U.S., Benevento and his trio made a number of high profile performances, including San Francisco Jazz Festival, Earshot Festival and Carnegie Hall. At the end of '09, Benevento released his first ever DVD, Live In NYC: The Sullivan Hall Residency, a two hour-plus documentary with performances and interviews from his historical five week 2008 engagement at the downtown New York City venue Sullivan Hall, featuring special guests like Brad Barr, Kaki King, Billy Martin, Stanton Moore and Steven Bernstein. As if all this wasn't enough, he toured and recorded with post jazz cognoscenti Garage A Trois, became a full time member of indie pop experimentalists Surprise Me Mr. Davis and welcomed his second daughter into the world.

With the release of BETWEEN NEEDLES & NIGHTFALL, Marco Benevento continues to define himself as one of the most prolific new voices of his era, blurring genres from song to song, and more often from measure to measure, with his own take on simple pop pleasures, dance party rave-ups and art jazz experimentation. He speaks in modern sonic tongues, all cut-and-pasted, tweaked-out and glitchy, but full of wide-eyed wonder that rejoices in the limitless horizons of sound and melody.

Marco Benevento | Live In NYC: The Sullivan Hall Residency

At the outset of 2008, Marco Benevento took over New York City's then brand new Greenwich Village music venue, Sullivan Hall, for a month-long residency. He would call it home for five Thursday nights in January, inviting a who's who in modern jazz and improvisational rock music to play with him each week in a different configuration.

Hauling his own baby grand piano from his Brooklyn apartment to the Sullivan Hall stage for the event, Benevento led his musical co-conspirators through two sets a night of daring and consistently breathtaking improvisations. Whether it was the Bitches Brew-esque sonic explorations of his collaboration with Steven Bernstein, Bobby Previte and DJ Olive, the glorious post rock ferocity of a line-up with Brad Barr and Joe Russo or Benevento's own regular trio with Reed Mathis and Andrew Barr celebrating the release of their debut album Invisible Baby, every set took on a life all its own.

As the sold out crowds that gathered for each week's performance will attest, these shows were the stuff of legend in the recent history of downtown New York City's music scene. Thankfully, director Karina Mackenzie captured all five nights on high definition video along with multi-track recordings and artist interviews that are now available on a DVD release from The Royal Potato Family entitled Live In NYC: The Sullivan Hall Residency. While it's Marco Benevento's name at the top of the billing, what the film portrays is a family of fearless, faithful, one-of-a-kind artists making some of the most vital music of their time.

The Bad Plus & Marco Benevento Trio @ Boulder Theater

bad-plusArguably one of the biggest breakout stories of jazz in the past decade, The Bad Plus (Reid Anderson - bass; Ethan Iverson- piano; & David King - Drums) have connected with the jazz world and beyond with These are the Vistas (2003), Give (2004), Suspicious Activity? (2005), and Prog (2007).

Performing both original compositions and a variety of covers, The Bad Plus brings a winningly disparate body of influences to the stage. This is not a jazz trio for whom being "rock-influenced” means simply playing loud or referencing Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, and The Pixies, etc. With deep experience writing and performing across several genres, these guys are shrewd, hearty improvisers with the ability to build, contort, distort, destroy, rebuild and reinvent without losing grasp of “the song.”

Marco Benevento returns with Me Not Me, a new studio album featuring interpretations of songs by artists including My Morning Jacket, Leonard Cohen and Deerhoof among others. The ten-track collection arrives within a year from release of Benevento’s critically acclaimed debut studio effort, Invisible Baby. Like its predecessor, Benevento is joined on the sessions by bassist Reed Mathis and drummers Matt Chamberlain and Andrew Barr.

Marco-beneventoMarco Benevento initially garnered national attention playing Hammond B-3 organ and Wurlitzer in The Benevento-Russo Duo, but he shifts the focus to acoustic piano with his own trio. Throughout Me Not Me, he proves himself one of the most compelling sonic innovators of his generation, re-imagining the instrument by running it through pickups, delay and distortion pedals and a Fender Super Reverb Amp.
