Alex Winston To Release Debut "Sister Wife"

Alex Winston was given her first guitar when she was 7. When her Dad’s advances to teach music to her older brother fell on deaf ears, she was gladly the runner up. Sitting in the basement for hours practicing chord progressions and listening to songwriters like Carole King and Laura Nyro, she was taught the importance of her home city of Detroit’s musical history.
Classically trained in opera and bred on musical Americana, the beautiful Detroit-native would listen to the rock of Iggy Pop and The Stooges, The MC5 and the legendary Motown artists in equal measures. She opted out of college when she was given the opportunity to tour the US, and to this day still cherishes opening for Chuck Berry in St Louis.
Alex moved to New York earlier in 2010 and her upcoming mini LP, Sister Wife, has been produced by hot young New York producers The Knocks and Londoner Charlie Hugall (Florence and the Machine).
It will be preceded by a video for lead track "Locomotive". The songs on the album tackle a variety of interesting subjects; personal ambivalence, polygamy, the art of writing inebriated and more.
Alex recently released a limited edition run of 7" vinyl of Choice Notes, and sold out her debut live performance (with a seven piece band!) at this year's CMJ festival in New York.

Chris Berry brings CB3 from Zimbabwe to the West Coast

What happens when you put African grooves born in the ghettos of Zimbabwe with the ground breaking guitar work of San Francisco’s scene and combine it with New York City’s urban electronica? The west coast is about to find out.

Joining together for their first multi-night tour, and performing under the guise of CB-3, Chris Berry has arranged his most interesting collaboration yet. Featuring San Francisco’s own Steve Kimock alongside the rhythm section of the Brazillian Girls comes an explosive cross-cultural musical experience for music lovers of all types - CB-3 (Chris Berry Trio) Featuring Steve Kimock. The 10-day tour will maneuver along the west coast including dates in Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Eugene and Portland Oregon.

Music first touched the Grammy award winning Chris Berry as a teen living in the heart of Zimbabwe where he carefully learned the indigenous rhythms of Africa on the sacred Mbira (African Thumb Piano). His ability to speak out against the tyranny of the Zimbabwean regime through the art of music won him overnight success across the country and in the World Music market, bringing his music around the globe. Since then, he has performed on the stages of the 2000 Olympics, the Sydney Opera house and the nations largest festivals across the United States with his project Panjea. 2010 finds the “Afropop Superstar” (SF Chronicle) a multi-instrumentalist with grace on Mbira, the hand drum, as well as a gifted singer-songwriter whose voice is often compared to Sting.

Together with CB3, Berry combines his unique intercultural perspective with the nations highest caliber of musicians, each known for their genre bending talent, for an intimate musical experience. The project features “Guitar Monk” Steve Kimock who was recently hailed on CNN.com as an “unknown legend,” as well as Aaron Johnston (drums) & Jesse Murphy (bass) from the Grammy award nominated Brazilian Girls.

Collectively, CB-3 (Chris Berry Trio) Featuring Steve Kimock has the ability to bring together three decades of music history tightly fitted into one anthology adorned with cutting-edge improvisational guitar, hip-hop and elements of modern electronica. Show goers can expect both a dance ready experience as well as an intimate view into music provoked by both the past and present.

Chris Berry's music got its start in the Ghettos of Zimbabwe where his platinum selling albums featured fusions of Funk, Dance Hall Reggae and African Rhythms. CB-3's Sound is a mix of the modern and the ancient. Old rhythms from the motherland are played through heavy electronics and otherworldly effects. The electric Mbira developed by Chris Berry, is the only one of its kind and creates a unique and distinctive sound that characterizes CB-3's original sound. The result is a dubbed out very dancey version of CB-3's mother-band, Panjea.

Panjea Featuring Chris Berry & Michael Kang Plan Colorado Dates

Panjea @ Rothbury - photos by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

Musical and spiritual journeyman Chris Berry alongside Michael Kang & the multi-cultural ensemble Panjea have booked a run of Colorado dates. Uniting people through music, Panjea's powerful groove and socially conscious message garnered major success throughout Southern Africa, selling out countless stadiums and over a million records. With upcoming shows in Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins along with a free live CD hosted on their website, the group is positioned to do the same stateside.

Leaving his home in California at the age of eighteen, Chris Berry relocated to Southern Africa with his mentor and began studying mbira (thumb piano) and the ngoma drum. It was during that time when he formed Panjea. Rooted deeply in African culture, their revolutionary mix of indigenous music, dance hall and hip-hop has earned the band immeasurable success throughout Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Berry's tireless dedication and unmatched skill led him to become one of the first Westerners to be accepted among the mbira masters as one of their own.

In addition to Chris Berry covering vocals, mbira and djembe, Panjea features Danny Sears on trumpet, Jon Stewart on Sax, Aaron Johnson on drums (brazillian girls), Patrice Blanchard on bass, Michael Kang on mandolin (String Cheese Indident) and Zivanai Masango from Zimbabwae on guitars. Following the edict to make a difference here, Chris Berry & Panjea continue to preach the positive message of hope, justice and peace through infectious cultural rhythms and danceable beats. Contributing to Amnesty International, Flyways and their own Panjea Foundation for Cultural Education, the group in their own right, has become a non-profit organization. Always a band to give back, Panjea has a full length CD compiled from various festivals performed at this summer. The high energy mix of live tracks is available at their new website, www.panjeamusic.com.

Featuring virtuosic musicianship, and an incredibly eclectic blend of cultures, this is a show not to be missed. The run of dates starts with an intimate show at the B Side Lounge in Boulder followed by a special Halloween show supporting Leftover Salmon at the Fillmore in Denver. Afterwards, Panjea will announce another intimate late night performance directly after the Fillmore show before wrapping up on November 6th at the Aggie Theatre in Fort Collins.
