DeVotchKa at Boulder Theater | 10.29.11

97.3 KBCO & Z2 Entertainment are proud to present DeVotchKa at the Boulder Theater for the annual Halloween show on Saturday, October 29th, 2011. Tickets go on sale Friday, July 22nd for $42.00 General Admission.

With the release of the band's fifth album, "100 Lovers" (Anti- Records, 2011), the band headed back to the romantic influences of the Arizona desert with producer Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Neko Case) to create a compendium of short stories inspired by the varied moments the band experienced since the release of A Mad & Faithful Telling.

Like many bands, DeVotchKa spent their early years traveling the highways and byways searching for gigs and a musical direction. As time went on, the band began to foster important musical collaborations with the unequivocal Calexico and the seminal gypsy punks Gogol Bordello.

The band from Denver has now headlined large venues and performed at practically every major music festival, from Coachella to Lollapalooza. After years of toiling in obscurity, the band was selling out shows from the Fillmore in San Francisco to First Avenue in Minneapolis, with breakout performances at Bumbershoot and Austin City Limits Music Festival. The love spread to Europe and each year, DeVotchKa plays a number of European and American festivals, including Glastonbury and a return to Bonnaroo.

"100 Lovers" is the album DeVotchKa had always wanted to make. "How it Ends" was recorded and mixed in only nine days. On "A Mad and Faithful Telling,” the band had more time and conducted complex arrangements and experimental recording techniques. For "100 Lovers", DeVotchKa spent over a year defining their sound, taking multiple trips to the desert studio to craft twelve new recordings. The final product is the bands strongest album to date, filled with songs fans will love, songs to draw in new listeners, and exciting numbers that fit nicely into their rousing live sets. With the new album, DeVotchKa have achieved success carving their own singular sound out of the worlds of rock, opera, theater, dance, and film.

Young Deadhead Composes "The World As It Could Be" & More Good News

Henry Sidle, a 12-year old self-proclaimed avid Deadhead and musician, learned about the Rex Foundation when he read a review of The Wheel - A Musical Celebration of Jerry Garcia.  He contacted us, seeking to include Rex as the community service element of his upcoming Bar Mitzvah.  When I asked if he would consider learning more about The World As It Could Be project and help raise awareness about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, perhaps applying his musical talents along the way, Henry enthusiastically said, "Yes!"  Henry composed an original song "The World As It Could Be" and created a video to help get the word out about furthering human rights. Click here to read more about Henry's project, see the video and the song lyrics, and learn more about my unexpected, yet very special personal connection to Henry. Henry will be performing this song at the Gathering of the Vibes Festival, interviewed by David Gans.

Here are upcoming Rex Musical Caravan events that reflect the wonderful support of the musical community and beyond.  Enjoy some fun, great music and kindred connection, while supporting the Rex Foundation at the same time:

July 8-10 in Tipton, PA - Pennsylvania's Mysterytrain once again supports the Rex Foundation, this time at the multi-day JesterFest at the PPG Pavilion.  Click here for details.

July 14-17 - The All Good Festival once again supports the Rex Foundation, including a Rex Jam on Saturday with Matt Butler and The Everyone Orchestra to support the Preston High School Music Program.

Saturday, August 6 - Sonoma County's own Tribal Hippie UnderGround Zone (THUGZ) are doing another show for Rex - outdoors under the stars at the rustic Rio Nido Roadhouse.  Here are the details.

Tuesday, August 9 - The SF Giants will pay tribute to the Grateful Dead with another special event package that includes support for the Rex Foundation as they face off against the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Here is information on how to get your tickets now.

The New Deal's FINAL Colorado Performance @ Fox Theatre

The New Deal has decided that 2011 will mark the end of a spectacular 12-year career.

It has been an amazing run for the band and we appreciate the loyal and dedicated tND fanbase across North America and Asia. Our individual lives have taken very different paths with family, living abroad, and other various projects. We have come to a point where the time and commitment that it takes to maintain our band at its best is no longer possible. As a group, we’ve never been known to go halfway, so we have decided to end things with a great run of summer and fall shows that we hope to be the best yet.

Over the next several months, TND will return to the East Coast. The final Summer and Fall 2011 shows will bring us to many of our favorite places in the US and Canada, and we’re looking forward to finishing things off in a big way.

We look forward to each and every one of these very special shows. Our fans have been fantastically devoted and supportive, and we hope to give them a final run of performances that will be truly memorable.

In addition to the summer shows and festivals already announced, we expect to add a few more dates to give as many fans as possible the opportunity to see us play together one last time.

iClips.net to Stream Umphrey's McGee's 'UM Bowl II'

Two of Chicago’s favorite homegrown bands perform in their hometown this first weekend of April. Performing at the Double Door in Chicago tonight, Friday, April 1, Lubriphonic fuses the roots of rock and blues soul with explosive in-your-face delivery and sensuous upbeat funk music. On Saturday, April 2, the highly anticipated hometown show of Chicago’s fusion pioneers Umphrey’s McGee culminates with their sold out UM Bowl II at the Park West, which will stream online video of the nearly 5 hour performance via iClips.net.

The advance purchase discount for this musical marathon ends Saturday, April 2 at 3 PM CDT and the day of show pricing for the entire UM Bowl will jump to $11.99. With the UM Bowl purchase, fans also receive the previously unreleased Umphrey's McGee Saturday Set from Summer Camp Festival 2010.

Prior to the online video stream of the UM Bowl II, Lubriphonic’s Friday 4/1 show will begin streaming on iClips.net at 5:45 PM CDT Saturday, April 2.  Their live sound is full of precision orchestrations made up of blazing guitars, tight three piece horn lines, soulful songwriting, bluesy vocals and the habit to cut the funk loose. Lubriphonic also announces their spring tour featuring them headlining some Widespread Panic after parties, supporting WSP April 15 at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Pelham, AL, as well as packed tour of the Midwest and Southeast before heading into summer festival season including gigs at Wakarusa, Summer Camp and many more. In addition to the no cost video stream of Friday’s show , interested fans of music are invited to try the veritable taster spoon of Lubriphonic music by downloading a free sampler including over an hour of live and studio Lube.

The best description of the Lubriphonic’s upbeat sound comes from some members of the media:

“Combine the best elements of old-school funk and edgy rock and roll, throw in some soulful R&B, and you end up with Lubriphonic, one of the most happening bands out there today... Lubriphonic draws from strong, eclectic influences, yet is cutting-edge original” -- Hittin' The Note

“This old-school Chicago-based rocking funk and soul band kicks up the dust with a crackling three-piece horn section and enough energy to blow the fuses at this intimate venue. It’s terrific originals sound like ‘70s covers and when it does dig down for an oldie, as on Curtis Mayfield’s classic ‘If There’s a Hell Below (We’re All Gonna Go),’ it’s an all-stops-pulled blast.”– Creative Loafing Atlanta
