ekoostik hookah's Bassist, Cliff Starbuck, To Leave the Band Following NYE

Today the venerable Ohio jamband institution, ekoostik hookah, offers two announcements about the departure of band founder, bassist and vocalist Cliff Starbuck. With no plans to end their nearly twenty-year career of playing music, ekoostik hookah will continue playing music, hosting Hookahvilles and touring. Here is Cliff Starbuck’s statement:

After a lot of careful thinking, I have decided to leave the band. Having played with Hookah for almost 19 years, it was an extremely difficult decision, made even more difficult by my love for my band mates and our music.  Naturally I'll be coming back to sit in periodically, but after New Year's Eve you'll be enjoying a new bass player.

It has been an amazing privilege to spend so many years playing with this band, and I'll always be grateful for the experiences I've had along the way. I’ve gotten to travel all over the world to play music that I love with all my favorite people. I've been extremely lucky, and there's no other way I would rather have spent these years. I'm proud to be the musician that I am today, one that I could never have become without the influence of everyone in this band.  I know my decision to leave might be surprising and hard to understand, but I’m asking for your support and trust on this. 19 years is a long time for anyone to do the same thing, let alone someone with my short attention span. I feel strongly that this is the right time in my life to explore new options and try new things.  It's very sad to be leaving the people with whom I've shared so much, but I'm also excited about the prospect of going new places and seeing what the future might bring. A significant change in my life is essential for me to evolve, not just as a musician but as a person.

It's natural to be resistant to change, especially when it comes to altering a formula that's been so successful for so long. Sometimes veering off from the inevitable path will make the trip more interesting, and ultimately more fulfilling. The band is in the process of finding a bassist who will live up to and probably eclipse my legacy. I'll pass on everything I've learned, but it'll be nice to hear new ideas and a fresh perspective on the bass lines.

Words are inadequate when it comes to trying to express my gratitude for all of your support, and for the good music and good times we've all had together. I'll miss you all and look forward to when our paths cross in the future.

Cliff

~~~
And ekoostik hookah responds with this public statement:
While we are sad to see Cliff go, we respect his decision and wish him the best in whatever he ends up doing.  It has been a great honor to be able to spend all of these years together making music and building the wonderful scene that surrounds and supports ekoostik hookah.  From a dingy bar in Columbus to Amsterdam, from tiny crowds in Alabama to massive Hookahvilles, it’s been an amazing ride.  One that would have never been possible without Cliff.
Cliff will be playing with us through the end of the year, his last show being at The Newport in Columbus, Ohio on New Year’s Eve.  We will then be taking a 6 week break to work in our new bass player.  While Cliff will be missed, we are confident that we will be as strong as ever when we return.  It will be exciting to see what this change brings to our music.  In the meantime, we plan on making the most of these last few shows with Cliff, and we’ll be looking forward to having him come back to sit-in with us on occasion.
See you soon,
Dave, Eric, John, and Steve
Lotus Announce NYE Run in Philly, Set to Begin Fall Tour
Today Lotus announce a New Year's eve run in Pennsylvania that will culminate with an epic New Year's Eve Show with MSTRKRFT at Philadelphia's Electric Factory. Leading up to the big night, the band will stop at Mr. Smalls Theatre (Pittsburgh, PA) on 12/29 and The Note (West Chester, PA) on 12/30, both with support act Tigersapien.
The New Year's Eve announcement comes as Lotus prepare to hit the road for a full season of touring.  Along their Fall Tour, Lotus will break ground in a way that no other rock band has done prior - they are plotting a tour this fall that truly allows their legion of fans to pay-what-they-want for tickets. The Pay-What-You-Want-Tour featuring Lotus is an eight night run of shows in western U.S. states, sponsored by Ticketweb, that lets the fans decide how much their show ticket will cost. At the $15.00 Pay-What-You-Want level or higher, fans receive free digital downloads of the band's two new EPs Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass, both to be released on October 6, 2009.
The Pay-What-You-Want dates are part of Lotus' larger Fall Tour, running from early-October through the end of the year. Big stops include performances at Denver's Fillmore, NYC's Terminal 5 (w/ support acts RJD2 and Junior Boys DJ set), Baltimore's Sonar, Chicago's Vic Theatre, the Electric Factory in Philly for New Year's Eve and others. Lotus brings out several must-see opening acts for many of these shows, including Break Science feat Adam Dietch, The Egg (from London, UK), Big in Japan, Big Gigantic, RJD2, Junior Boys, and more. Don't miss a few special small shows: here's the scoop - the Denver Fillmore show is being bundled with the Quixote's show (to get into Quixotes, you must buy the Fillmore ticket), and also, for New Years, Lotus presents another "bundled" show at The Note in West Chester, PA (to purchase a ticket for The Note, you must purchase a bundled Electric Factory ticket).
Downloads of both new EPs will be bundled with advance ticket purchases for select Fall Tour dates including the two Denver shows, both Boston shows and the New Year's run.  The material on both Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass can be directly traced back to Lotus' 2008 full-length release, Hammerstrike. A number of songs were recorded that didn't find their way onto Hammerstrike (either they hadn't been finished by deadlines or they weren't coalescing with the sound of that project), but after finishing the album, Lotus decided to revisit these tracks, and the results are extraordinary. Feather on Wood is sunnier with a laid-back vibe, yet not afraid of big rock beauty, while Oil on Glass is darker in character, with more head-nodding tempos.
EOTO NYE '08 at Wonder Ballroom
photos by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web
Portland's history speaks of innovation, industry and eccentrics. This year's 2nd Annual Shanghai Nights celebration honors that past by welcoming in the New Year with an imaginative mix of art, music, Steampunk fashion, and dance. With a diverse and exciting lineup, this night promises to be an unforgettable evening.
Portland's own Scott Law joins forces with Keith Moseley (String Cheese Incident), drummer Jeff Sipe (Aquarium Rescue Unit, Susan Tedeschi) & guitar man Gibb Droll (Marc Broussard) for the highly anticipated WestCoast debut of the aptly named Moseley, Law, Sipe & Droll. Joining the band for a special post-midnight extended set is the electrifying leftcoast breakbeat/glitch-hop/house duo, EOTO, composed of SCI's Jason Hann & Michael Travis. Onstage, EOTO's music is created, recorded and mixed live for a continually evolving & highly danceable musical experience. The Senate, an up-and-coming Seattle-based acoustic rock trio, will kick off the New Years festivities with their catchy songwriting, tight arrangements, sweet vocals, and unorthodox instrumental techniques.
No Shanghai Nights would be complete without a Shanghai Surprise at midnight. Look for members of each of the bands to play alongside special guests, including world renown fiddler Darol Anger, singer/songwriter and the event's MC, Big Water, and the very own Shanghai Rose Queen, Stephanie Schneiderman. There will also be surprise guests, creative merriment, a sculpture exhibit by musician Tony Furtado, and live painting by Daniel Work, who will be creating the Shanghai Nights commemorative posters during the show.
For more information, visit www.nyeportland.com, and be sure to check us out on Facebook, MySpace and Twitter to keep abreast of the latest news on what is quickly becoming a Portland New Year tradition.
Steve Kimock Gears Up For Denver NYE Shows
photo by Phil Emma- for the Grateful Web
Guitarist Steve Kimock returns to Denver for a string of dates leading up to this year's New Year's Eve revelry. Kimock will join the illustrious Everyone Orchestra on Monday, December 29th at Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom, followed by a two-night celebration on December 30th and 31st at Owsley's Golden Road with legendary B-3 player Melvin Seals & JGB. Kimock's stop in Colorado promises to be a memorable close to a eventful 2008 for the versatile guitarist.
The kickoff show at Cervantes pairs Kimock with the Everyone Orchestra, the Portland, OR based revolving cast of extraordinary musicians brought together by percussionist Matt Butler. Having showcased members from Phish, moe., SCI and countless other nationally known musicians, the Everyone Orchestra joined by Steve Kimock will deliver a celebratory, interactive, fun, improvisational experience orchestrated by a mad scientist conductor.
On the following nights at Owsley's Golden Road, Kimock joins Melvin Seals and JGB for two nights of musical revelry to bring in 2009. The Tuesday night show will feature a special late night set from perennial groovers BoomBox, while the Wednesday night New Year's Eve show will feature the Eric McFadden Trio opening.
All shows are ages 16 and up, with doors at 8PM and music starting at 9PM. Tickets are available at Kimock.com and Cervante's Ballroom for this emphatic year end celebration. As Kimock and company put the exclamation point on 2008, expect big things from him in 2009, as he launches his new nationally touring band, Steve Kimock's Crazy Engine. Stay Tuned!
