We Are Wolves Announce U.S. Tour Dates

French-Canadian dance/rock/electro trio We Are Wolves have announced a quick run of U.S. tour dates around the February 2nd release of their third album, Invisible Violence, on Dare To Care Records. The band will make a weekend trip to the northeast, beginning February 4th at Great Scott in Boston, MA, and wrapping up February 6th at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York, NY, before heading home to Montreal, Canada. We Are Wolves are also confirmed to open for fellow countrymen Wolf Parade on three of the band's April tour dates, in addition to traveling to SXSW in March and to headlining several shows in their native Canada next month.

Earlier this week, Brooklyn Vegan featured the second MP3 off of Invisible Violence, "Blue." The track can now also be downloaded here. First single "Holding Hands" - which was featured last month as a 'Free MP3 of the Day' on AOL Music's Spinner blog and noted for its "blistering guitar riffs, sneering vocals, and an insistent rhythm section" by Prefixmag.com - is also available for download here. The accompanying video for "Holding Hands" can be seen here.

James McMurtry gets iPhone app, embarks on Western tour

James McMurtry fans can now stay up to date with concert information, photos, videos, music and blog posts while they are on the go with the  his new official iPhone application.  The app also allows users to post photos from their iPhone directly to the fan community and engage other fans across Facebook and iLike. The app is available for $.99 at the link here.

McMurtry and his band will be touring the western United States in support of his latest release, Live in Europe (Lightning Rod Records). The album is a document of McMurtry’s first European tour, on which he was joined by keyboardist Ian McLagan and fellow Texas songwriting legend Jon Dee Graham. The set is available as a CD with a bonus DVD, or as a deluxe vinyl LP package with a CD and DVD insert.

Live in Europe, available as a CD/DVD set or as a vinyl LP/DVD set, has earned praise from the critics. Mike Seely, writing in the Seattle Weekly, wrote: “The great Texan James McMurtry released a new album of old material in 2009—in other words, a live album. No matter: Mere mention of its drop date gave me an excuse to delve deeper into McMurtry's supremely underrated oeuvre. . . This re-exposure made me surer than ever that McMurtry is the Springsteen of the South.”

Blurt’s Steve Pick added, “With a new administration in office, he's taken six of the less directly political songs from that record, added two other older cuts, and brought out Live in Europe. It's another chance to notice how in and around the anger about macroscopic events, McMurtry is capable of extraordinary nuance in describing the lives of ordinary people on a microscopic level.”

In addition, McMurtry’s 2005 song “We Can’t Make it Here” was listed as the “Song of the Decade” both by the Lefsetz Letter’s Bob Lefsetz, and by NoDepression.com’s Grant Alden, the latter of whom called it, “Angry and musically adventurous and pissed off, which is different from angry. And a summary of how this decade felt, from my side of the typing.” The Nation declared McMurtry “Most Important Rocker.”

Cursive to Support Alkaline Trio on Spring Tour Dates

Cursive will support Alkaline Trio on their upcoming spring tour dates, which will take the band across the country and back beginning February 16th at the Glass House in Pomona, CA, and wrapping up April 2nd at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, CA.

Since the release of their sixth studio album Mama, I'm Swollen on Saddle Creek Records last March, Cursive has crisscrossed the country multiple times as a headliner. The band - long known for their indefatigable touring schedule as well as their incendiary, cathartic live show - completed their most recent tour in mid-December. Cursive's shows throughout 2009 drew acclaim, with Indianapolis, IN's Nuvo Weekly remarking, "Opening with 'Bloody Murderer' from their breakthrough album The Ugly Organ, the five-piece slashed through a near-perfect set of songs from their last nine years of albums" and Melophobe declaring, "Cursive has proved that they are not only solid musicians, but incredible performers with a stamina that can be matched by few."

Cursive also released videos for three songs off of Mama, I'm Swollen over the past ten months: "From The Hips" (here); "I Couldn't Love You" (here); and "Let Me Up" (here). The band also made their much-deserved network television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman on March 13, 2009 (watch it here).

Django's 100th Birthday At The Iridium

Dorado Schmitt, legendary gypsy guitarist from France, has been at the center of the Django music resurgence in the US by appearing regularly at the Django Reinhardt NY Festival.  Besides starring at  the festival, he has toured the country with Allstar Bands  promoting the Django Reinhardt style at such  venues as The Kennedy  Center, Disney Hall, Rose Hall at Jazz at Lincoln Center, The SF Festival, Caramoor  and more...to great acclaim.

His highly anticipated return to the US this January will be in a major tour celebrating the 100th Birthday of DJANGO REINHARDT, his idol, with a swing thru NYC at The IRIDIUM on February 1,2,& 3 with a special tribute to the great LES PAUL, Monday, February  1.  Les Paul cited Django as one of his favorite guitarists, was a personal friend, and was instrumental in settling Django's estate and was given a guitar valued at over $500,000.00.

Accompanying DORADO SCHMITT will be SAMSON SCHMITT -  his son, a young Gypsy Guitar star in his own right, MARCEL LOEFFLER - Virtuoso Accordionist,  PIERRE BLANCHARD - Violin master, all from France , accompanied by Veteran Bassist BRIAN TORFF who performed for years with Grappelli.  And, there will be surprises!

*Django's most important and well-known composition NUAGES will be performed by DORADO SCHMITT and Band with renowned Russian Cellist BORISLAV STRULEV, a world-premiere performance of "Nuages" with cello.  A special arrangement for cello has been written by top Pianist/Composer/Arranger ROGER KELLAWAY (who Conducted and Arranged the music for Clint Eastwoods' new film INVICTUS).

Special Guest: Curtis Stigers

If voices, like wines, had noses, Curtis Stigers’ would be dusky oak with hints of Willie Nelson, Harry Nilsson, Ray Charles and Matt Dennis. It’s a voice that’s at once young and old, tender and tough, warm and inviting as a caress, yet sturdy as a firm handshake.  -Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes

Curtis Stigers is at the forefront of a new generation of jazz singers with one of the most distinctive voices in music...Downbeat Magazine named him as one of the jazz genre’s “Rising Male Stars”.  He has toured the world with such renowned pop artists as Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, and Prince, while collaborating with  jazz greats  Nancy Wilson, George Benson, Herbie Hancock, Randy and Michael Brecker, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Chris Potter, Larry Goldings and Toots Thielmans.   Crossing from Pop to Jazz, he has been  called “one of the best male jazz singers of his generation” by JazzTimes.  Stigers's latest critically acclaimed recording, "Lost In Dreams," on Concord Jazz, was released in September 2009.

Re the music of DJANGO, STIGERS says" I just love the Django recordings.  Something just kills me about it and I can hear myself singing in that sound!"

The Django Allstar tour, celebrating Djano's 100th birthday (which is Jan. 24th), commences with an important concert at the Kennedy Center Jan. 16, onto Minneapolis at the Dakota Jan. 18 & 19,  Yoshis in Oakland Jan. 21-24, Kuumbwa in Santa Cruz Jan. 25, Catalina's in LA Jan. 26,27,28, The Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa Jan 29 & 30, onto NY at the IRIDIUM Feb. 1,2,3, climaxing at the Montreal Jazz Festival Feb., 4,5,6 before heading back to France...Produced by Pat Philips & Ettore Stratta. The pair have also just released their new CD, Dorado Schmitt and The Django Reinhardt NY Festival Allstars "Live at the Kennedy Center" on their own label SP Productions. ..CD will be on sale during the tour.  (for info: patmusic2@aol.com)

DJANGO and GRAPPELLI met in the 30's in France to form The Hot Club  Quintette which took Europe by storm  and went on to become one of  the  most important musical partnerships in European history with a  hot jazz rendition of American pop standards, influenced by Ellington,  Armstrong and the like...Gypsy Jazz is still on the cutting edge and enjoying  enormous success around the world.  Young musicians as well as more  established are digging into Django's music , a torrent of guitar lines  on special string guitars with sounds all their own, easily  recognizable, virtuosic, hot and romantic.

Celebrity musicians and actors admire the music such as Leonardo DiCaprio who's dog is named Django, Sean Penn who starred in Woody Allen's  film "Sweet and Lo Down" about this music, Willie Nelson records it,  Tony Bennett wrote a lyric to Nuages, the most famous Django composition ... and more.

"Feb 1,2,3, is the  Centennial Celebration at one of NY's most important venues..."Historymaking  at THE IRIDIUM'  marking a music and master that continues to fascinate, inspire and bring joy...one  that has endured the test of time...and is still swinging!

Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery Celebrates Stout Month in Feb.

Mountain Sun- for the Grateful Web

Now in its sixteenth year, Stout Month has become a most anticipated event among local beer connoisseurs.  Ten of Mountain Sun's taps will fade to black with local, regional and national versions of the rich, thick and dark ale. For the first time ever, Stout Month will be expanding beyond Boulder as Vine Street Pub in Denver will join in paying homage to the almighty Stout!

Featured Stouts include nitrogen poured Belgian Dip Chocolate Stout and Korova Cream Stout. For the third year in a row, our Old School Irish Stout will also make an appearance on NitroOn CO2, Mountain Sun and Vine Street will be offering perennial favorite Yonder Mountain Stout and the good ol' classic Thunder Head Stout.  Once again we will brew a batch of Cherry Dip Stout  (Chocolate Stout with Sweet Cherry Puree)This decadent elixir should arrive just in time for Valentine's Day. We also found out what happens when you load a stout full of hops.  The answer is " Trickster Stout."  For the first time ever we will be featuring two house-brewed imperial stouts.  To compliment the palette- stomping Usurper, we will be unveiling a brand new Imperial.  Beware The Nihilist!

For the third year in a row, Mountain Sun will be hosting its ever-popular Stout Homebrew Competition.  Our panel of brewers will choose one lucky homebrewer to assist in brewing his or her own winning recipe on Mountain Sun's 6-barrel system. Past years' winners have included some of our tastiest and most popular stouts ever.  Two previous winners, Coconut Cream Stout and Stoaked Oak Stout, will be making yet another encore appearance at both pubs.

As usual, Mountain Sun rounds up a wide variety of local and national guest stouts to compliment the house brewed ales.  Guest stouts are still being finalized; this years line up is likely to include: Stone Imperial Stout (San Marcos, CA). Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout from Anderson Valley (Boonville, CA), Twisted Pine's Big Daddy Espresso Stout (Boulder, CO), Dog Fish Head's Chicory Stout (Milton, DE), Several vintages of Avery Czar Imperial Stout, and Great Divide's Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout (Denver CO).

All the way from England, Young's, Double Chocolate Stout will be tapped for the fifth year in a row.

This is a once a year opportunity to try some of the regions best stouts, side by side and on tap.  The fun begins on Friday, February 1st, at the Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery, 1535 Pearl Street, and for the first time ever, at Vine Street Pub, 1700 Vine Street Denver.  This mega stout celebration will continue as long as supplies last.

Shannon Whitworth @ Swallow Hill, Denver ~ Fri., Feb 13th

Shannon Whitworth- for the Grateful Web

Shannon Whitworth's music is something one would imagine to hear on a front porch in the hills of Appalachia. Combining a love for old-time banjo with a voice sounding like a younger Gillian Welch, Shannon Whitworth defines mountain music. She has spent the last ten years focusing on bluegrass and country music. Her talent as a singer and songwriter enabled her to spend the last four years touring the United States with acclaimed bluegrass band, The Biscuit Burners, which she co-founded. On clawhammer banjo and guitar, Shannon's compositions contributed depth to the band's material and have helped her gain respect as a truly talented singer and songwriter.

No Expectations features ten of Shannon's most recent compositions accompanied by an all-star cast of musicians. Great singing, great writing, and great picking makes Shannon Whitworth's first solo project unforgettable.
