The Drums' Internationally Acclaimed Debut Out Today

Following a massive wave of critical acclaim, New York City’s own The Drums release their state-side debut on Downtown Records today!  Hailed by Rolling Stone as “one of the best indie pop debuts of the year.” the band is featured on Windows Media Guide and Last.FM Discover today.  The full album is streaming on AOL Spinner and a new special b-side “When I Come Home” is RCRD LBL’s RCRD of the Day” MP3 download today!

The Drums’ spellbinding sound takes inspiration from elements of some of the greatest bands in history from The Smiths to the The Shangri-las and fuses them with the band’s own raw energy and excitement. The rhythm and reverb will force you to dance and the melodies will stay with you after the first listen.

After the release of their debut EP Summertime! and a string of tour dates in the UK, The Drums were listed at #1 on both Clash and NME’s Top Tips of the Year, in addition to being #5 on the BBC’s Sound of 2010 poll. Their live show has been called “explosive” and Jonny Pierce “one of the most magnetic frontmen in years.” The list of supporters is endless but nothing is more convincing than this stellar collection of songs. The last track on the album is entitled “The Future.” Fitting, since it will be full of sounds from The Drums.

You’ve heard the buzz and with the release of the band’s debut album, the songs speak for themselves. The band is currently on a national co-headlining tour with Surfer Blood.  Get ready to listen to the album that is sure to be your end of summer soundtrack.

The Mynabirds Stop By Daytrotter, Kick Off Tour Today

Laura Burhenn has had a busy year.  She released What We Lose In The Fire We Gain in the Flood (Saddle Creek), her acclaimed debut album as The Mynabirds, and opened for everyone from Al Green to Built to Spill.  Burhenn and her band also recently stopped by Daytrotter to record a session, which was just posted today.  Click HERE to listen to them perform 3 songs off the album plus the new song “Lemon Tree,” which was recorded for the first time.  The band is also about to hit the road on a national tour, including dates with Crooked Fingers and David Bazan.

After the break-up of her former band, Georgie James, Burhenn wrote a collection of songs that meditated on the themes of loss and recovery.  She recorded the compositions with Richard Swift and the results are the ten tracks on What We Lose.  A potent mix of soul, gospel, and country, Burhenn created The Mynabirds’ aesthetic based on how she thought Neil Young would sound doing Motown.  Serendipitously, she later found out that Young once collaborated with Rick James for a Motown project under the name The Mynah Birds!  Click HERE for more info on The Mynabirds, plus photos and mp3’s to listen to.

Listen to the first single from Umphrey's McGee's MANTIS

photos by Phil Emma- for the Grateful Web

Umphrey's McGee's single "Made to Measure," from their forthcoming studio album Mantis (street date: January 20, 2009), was just released.

Listen now here.

Chicago's Umphrey's McGee enters its second decade together with their hardest, darkest, and most artistically cohesive album to date. The new album hits streets on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009, when Mantis casts another Windy City family into the limelight. Over 2 years in the making, Mantis pushes the envelope in composition, arrangement and group interplay.  In an Umphrey's McGee first, the album offers 100% new material  - a drastic change of pace for a band whose typical modus operandi is to work out the material live on-stage before recording studio versions.

In addition to a one-of-a kind pre-order campaign where fans can participate in "unlocking exclusive bonus material, Mantis incorporates PUSH(TM) technology by Digital Insert to deliver new content throughout 2009.  PUSH requires no software installation or serial number; by simply putting the Mantis CD in your CD-ROM drive, the disc will act as a "key" to an Umphreys.com micro-site where fans get access to exclusive 2009 content as it becomes available.

Umphrey's McGee is preparing for their always-epic New Year's eve run in Chicago.  This year at the Auditorium Theatre, the band will be joined on stage by musical icons Buddy Guy, Stanley Jordan, Joshua Redman, Jeff Coffin, and Koko Taylor.  Previous guests who've shared the stage with Umphrey's include Tortoise, Taj Mahal, The Wailers, Los Lobos and many more.
