Beat Kaestli & Elizabeth Lohninger @ The Zinc

On January 24th, NYC witnessed its coldest day in six years with high forecasts for the day in low teens. While the city's wiser residents spent their night coddled in sweaters and blankets, a select few decided to brave their way into Greenwich Village and attend Zinc Bar for a night of blood-tempering jazz and booze.

Beat Kaestli @ the Bar Next Door | NYC

I'm happy to announce my return to the wonderful Bar Next Door, Monday, February 7th. I'll be featuring tried and true songs from my CDs and some new(er) tunes and, for the first time, I will do it with a vocal/accordion trio! More info below.

On an important side note - Haiti still needs a lot of help and what better way to raise awareness than by supporting a book about it's culture and religion by renowned photographer/photojournalist Les Stone, who has been visiting and documenting Haiti for many years. Please support his efforts to raise awareness for Haiti and help him realize his book "Vodou in Haiti: A People's Religion"! For more info and donations, click here.

Have a great weekend and looking forward to seeing you at Bar Next Door!

PANTyRAID @ The Boulder Theater | 12/3

PANTyRAiD is the product of two music producers that met on the West Coast of the United States and share the same appreciation for well produced electronic dance music. Martin Folb (aka MartyParty) and Josh Mayer (aka Ooah) have always loved the art of songwriting instead of the typical club track production.

They set off to write melodic, musical journeys within the electronic genre. Each song has its own character, its own intention, and often crosses over many genres of electronic and traditional music. One thing is consistent in all PANTyRAiD production, attention to detail, not found in typical electronic production. Constant variation in the beat, and an almost overwhelming palette of instrumentation and audio tricks and techniques.

The combination of MartyParty and Ooah has started a movement back towards the power of the melody and instrumental composition. Together they have invented a formula for producing intense club songs that pull together gorgeous and modern electronic sounds with hard hitting beats, bringing the best of hip-hop, dubstep and other forms of experimental electronic music.

The music is a new flavor of urban beat, a fresh new sexy sound that draws those that love to dance.

Ana Sia at the Mishawaka Ampitheatre

Cervantes Masterpiece presents Ana Sia at the Mishawaka Amphitheatre on Friday, August 20th, 2010.  She has toured through clubs and forests all festival season long with serious stacks in the middle of nowhere.  The Electric Canyon show will feature Ana Sia leading crew including Octopus Nebula, Eskmo, and The Passage Project.

I was lucky enough to see her set at Summer camp that made arms sway, heads bob, and the same forced rush of an indoor thump to an outdoor amphitheatre.  Watching the crowd come alive is almost as enlightening as the musical experience itself.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; if you aren’t dancing half as hard as she is on stage then step back.  There will be plenty rushing forward to dance with her.

The Mishawaka Amphitheatre is like a swing set of sound, the electric canyon crew will no doubt light it up.  Ana Sia has been warming up after parties enough.  Her worldly excursions are put to sturdy declarations of bass with treble dancing over the top.  It’s as if she embodies the Virgo through her music.  It’s time for the first lady of euphoric rhythm to lead the pack.  Her response to the crowd is always posed, graceful, and delicate with prayer hands in peaceful association.

Ana Sia co-creates her show with the audience.  The word puppeteer has a negative connotation, yet such a familiar feel at an Ana Sia show.  It’s not negative when you see how she handles the power of the beat.  Its fun like a puppet show, her music is beckoning you, “let me pull your strings.”  As hard as your feet will push you, the beat controls the strings that makes souls sing.

Black Seeds + Katchafire @ The Fox Theatre

Originating from Wellington, New Zealand, The Black Seeds have carved out their reputation through platinum selling albums, a masterful 8-piece live show, and a unique sound that fuses infectious grooves and melodies with undiluted roots music. With numerous European festival tours and releases behind them, and a successful 2009 North American release, their following continues to spread quickly around the globe.

Led by the vocals of Barnaby Weir and Daniel Weetman, at its core The Black Seeds music is a boundary-crossing sound fusion of big-beat funk, dub, soul, and afro-beat, mixed with vintage roots-reggae. Described by Clash Magazine as ‘one of the best reggae acts on the planet’, their legendary 8-piece live show brings the raw energy and good vibes wherever it goes. They now have countless sell-out New Zealand and Australasian tours behind them, and regularly perform at many of Europe’s biggest festivals.
The Black Seeds manage to play beyond the normal boundaries of reggae without compromising the music’s heart. While “Rotten Apple” has all the thump of a vintage Parliament-Funkadelic jam , “Afrophone”’s punchy horns and get- on-the-good-foot rhythm recall James Brown and the J.B.s at their peak – and the Seeds manage to pull it all off while retaining their voice. They make the blend of sounds feel absolutely natural. This is not a reggae band dropping a nov- elty funk cover into the middle of a set, this is simply Black Seeds music.” - Jambase.com (U.S.A) – Nov. ‘09
Reggae is one of the bloodlines of New Zealand music -- which accounts for the extraordinary success of Hamilton's Katchafire who, emerged as the hardest working band in the country. Their astonishing debut album, the prophetically named Revival, sold in excess of 30,000 copies (double platinum). The success of the band was evident in album sales, opening shows for the likes of Michael Franti and Spearhead, gigs all across the country (three in one day on Waitangi Day 2004, in Hamilton, Manukau and Nelson), three tours to Australia and New Caledonia, and most recently a stadium-filling headlining show in Fiji.
From humble beginnings ‘jamming’ in a garage, Katchafire is a melting pot of unique members, including two generations of one family and diverse musical perspectives – yet this blend is exquisitely aligned with the essence of reggae which can be an expression of social and political persuasions, hardship and pain, relaxation and reflection. Dubbed New Zealand’s hardest working band by national media, Katchafire have now completed numerous national and seven international tours. The band has moved audiences around the globe with three tours in New Caledonia, one tour in each Fiji and Hawaii and 10 Australian tours.
Katchafire’s unique, proudly New Zealand reggae style envelopes cross-cultural and cros-generational audiences in the revitalising vibes of healing music, encouraging sing-alongs and regeneration of soul. The Katchafire flame continues to burn ever brighter and stronger.
