Sid Griffin & the Coal Porters come to Western USA

Musician/writer/author/broadcaster Sid Griffin rose to fame in Los Angeles as leader of Island recording artists the Long Ryders, one of the first bands of the alt-rock era to incorporate the influences of Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Byrds. Yet in recent years, he’s made his home in London, where he leads the Coal Porters. The band has played only a limited number of American shows since their formation in the 90s.

This spring, the Coal Porters will return to the scene of the crime — Los Angeles and the West Coast — where they will play three shows in the L.A. area, one in San Francisco and a coveted spot at the Stagecoach festival on Sunday, May 1.

When the Ryders ended, native Kentuckian Griffin formed the Coal Porters, which initially had a fluid lineup, and relocated from L.A. to London, where he hooked up with Scottish stand-up comedian Neil Robert Herd (sound engineer on Wasp, Best Live Action Short Film winner at the 2004 Academy Awards). The duo started out playing electric, but quickly tired of hauling around amps and drums. As a result of a dare, the Coal Porters decided to play acoustic bluegrass versions of their material at a charity concert in London. The crowd reaction affirmed that the band had found its true calling and said goodbye to electric instrumentation forever.  En route from then to now they picked up Canadian fiddle virtuoso Carly Frey and London’s noted local attorney and doghouse bassist Andrew Stafford. In 2010 they were blessed to secure the services of one of Britain’s best young banjo players, John Breese. With this impressive lineup, the Coal Porters were ready to take on the world.

With a published author, a professional comedian and a barrister in their ranks they are the only band who can sue themselves over copyright and joke about it.

In April 2009, after traveling halfway across the globe, the Coal Porters arrived outside of Durango, Colorado, played two killer shows at the famous MeltDown Festival (Colorado’s answer to the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco), and laid down the tracks to their first album in two years. Durango was recorded in two weeks in the Colorado mountains at the Kozy Tone Studio of legendary producer Ed Stasium (Ramones, Mick Jagger, Phil Spector, Smithereens, Belinda Carlisle, Jeff Healey Band, and the Long Ryders).∂ƒƒ The entire album was cut Basement Tapes style, with the same authenticity of Dylan and The Band. Everyone crowded in one room. Overdubs were few and laughter frequent.

Durango was released in January 2010. It faithfully represents the Coal Porters’ hot live act, and creates new moods of its own. This highly anticipated follow-up to 2007’s Turn the Water On, Boy! is a clear country-mile step forward, evoking the sounds of a bluegrass Clash, or a Bill Monroe for the 21st century.

David Fricke wrote in Rolling Stone, “The Coal Porters [have] been going for nearly two decades . . . and [have] evolved from a deeper mining of the country in the Ryders’ acid-tinted drive to a pure acoustic bluegrass written and played with natural — in Griffin’s case, native — flair on Durango.”

Fricke appeared with Griffin in a one-on-one interview panel at the Americana Music Festival & Conference, held in Nashville in September 2010.

Awarding Durango four stars in March 2010, MOJO magazine said: “The audio equivalent of a feel-good movie . . . recorded all in one room, with everyone as much intent on capturing the vibes as much as the undoubted quality of the music . . . gorgeous.”

Blurt noted, “Seven albums on, the Coal Porters have a reputation they can bank on. And with Durango this durable bunch has successfully added even more fuel to their fire.”

The Coal Porters are five musicians from four different parts of the planet who came together as an incredibly powerful fusion of talent, the world’s first “alt-bluegrass” act.

“For all the satisfaction of success in Europe and becoming the UK’s leading ‘alt-bluegrass’ ensemble,” says Griffin, “there is nothing to compare to the Coal Porters heading for my musical home in California. My days in Los Angeles with the Long Ryders were so wonderful and I was so blessed with so many friends that it is high time I took the band to the left coast to show ’em all what we can do. I am extremely proud of my time in the Golden State and extremely proud of the music my Coal Porters are making right now so to put the two together is gonna be a true, true week to remember.”

EOTO Spring Tour With Custom Projection Show - FREE MP3

EOTO is hitting the road for an extensive spring tour this week with a custom animated video projection show provided by lighting guru Zebbler (through April 9th). The dynamic duo, known for their infectious 100% live improvised performances will kick off their Spring tour this weekend in St Louis with a Mardi Gras style costume party before they crisscross the countryside with stops in Albuquerque, Denver, Austin, Nashville, Tallahassee Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Washington DC, New York City and everywhere in between.

Throbbing bass and thudding beats are the signatures of this project from drummers Michael Travis and Jason Hann. The duo moves effortlessly from choppy dubstep to whip-smart, four-on-the-floor house to psychedelic trip-hop. It's a dance marathon and everyone's in it together. A nebulous beast, set lists are only broken up into tracks for the sake of posterity. In reality, changes in mood, energy, and inspiration are reflected "in real-time" by rhythmic and melodic shifts.

Because EOTO starts fresh every night, the band's evolutionary progress has been thrust into hyperspeed, eclipsing standard acts who return to their dusty catalog for every performance. The wobbly, buzz-saw bass and heavy backbeat style has become a signature of their sets, as heard on their live recordings and on the bands most recent 2009 studio release, Fire the Lazers. Newer live material has the duo co-opting sounds from outside the realm of electronic music with scratchy punk riffs and fuzzy sludge metal bass.

The perfect match for EOTO's incredible live improvised performances, projection designer known lovingly as "Zebbler" will also join the band with a custom animated projection show through April 9th. Zebbler was voted one of the top 20 VJ's in DJ magazine in 2007 and is known for delivering an organic visual odyssey with a genuinely live feel. The projection show will include featured content submitted by fans in a recent video contest as well as custom animations created just for the EOTO Spring Tour.

Along with a massive tour schedule and custom eye candy, the band is also launching the first tastes of their new fan-club ticketing program, offering fans an un-heard of $2 ticketing fees! EOTO is also offering the 2010 New Year performance from Denver as a free download to everyone who purchases a ticket for the entire year. For more information about EOTO, the free NYE Download and to purchase tickets, tune into the band's website at www.eotomusic.com

Dinosaur Bones: 'My Divider' Streets 3/8

Toronto-based Dinosaur Bones are prepping the release of their debut LP, My Divider, on March 8th, 2011 via Dine Alone Records. In advance of the release of the album, the band has made it available for select press. Following the success of their recent Birthright EP, the band received a great deal of accolades in their native Canada. Now comes their return with the next chapter in their story. Dinosaur Bones are giving away the song “Royalty” from the album for free. Click HERE to download.

The ambition of My Divider is easily noticeable. They continue to show their growth as a band with driving tracks like opener “Making Light” and “Sharks in the Sand.” “Highwire Act” and “Point of Pride” show off the band’s penchant for complicated melodies paired with guitar-driven stomps, a la influences like The Walkmen and Chavez. The title track, “My Divider,” closes the album and showcases frontman Ben Fox’s passionate lyrics and assured delivery. As a quintet, Dinosaur Bones’ ranges of influences are widely varied. This yields a sound that is equal parts fuzzed out indie rock and heartfelt emotion, but the cohesion and sensibility are unmistakable.

Dinosaur Bones returned to the studio to record My Divider with Jon Drew (Tokyo Police Club, Fucked Up, Arkells). He also recorded and mixed the Birthright EP.

Having already shared stages with the likes of Man Man, Arkels, Handsome Furs, Crystal Antlers and Plants and Animals, the band have rightly earned their place in the indie pop scene of Toronto. Now they bring their sound stateside. They’ll also be touring Canada in April with Tokyo Police Club and will be playing the main stage at the famed Edgefest in Toronto this year, sharing the bill with A Perfect Circle and Rise Against.

The Fervor Release New Album on MMJ Frontman Yim Yames' Label

Louisville, Kentucky quartet The Fervor have teamed up with My Morning Jacket frontman Yim Yames to release their ethereal new full-length Arise, Great Warrior on his label, Removador Recordings & Solutions. The album is out now digitally along with a CD version available through SonaBLASTand LP from Karate Body. With its combination of mysterious yet timeless lyrics and brooding arrangements, Arise is a poignant and gripping ride from start to finish.

The first words on the record uttered by frontwoman Natalie Felker are “Arise, great warrior / inside you’re a destroyer / by the time we see the sun / you’re already on the run.” Delivered in her husky voice with its distinct and seductive tone, she paints a mystical, dreamlike picture. Alongside Natalie’s radiant vocals and shimmering keys, guitarist Ben Felker, bassist Michael Campbell and drummer Mat Herron create hypnotic atmospheres in each song that stomp and crash toward epic climaxes.

Arise was produced by Charles Gonzalez, who recorded with the band in San Francisco, where they experienced a rebirth of sorts. Rather than aiming for note-for-note perfection, the group strived to capture an enrapturing performance of each song. The Fervor then headed back to Louisville to mix the album with engineer Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Wax Fang). By keeping the focus on the power of what the four band members can do together in a room, the result is an album fueled by an energy that feels potent and organic around every corner. All the exciting twists and turns build up to an ultimate catharsis as the haunting final notes of “Let’s Get Loaded” gently ring out.

Scattered Trees Premiere Live “A Conversation” Video

Today, Chicago’s Scattered Trees premiered their live video for “A Conversation About Death on New Years Eve” on My Old Kentucky Blog. Click here to watch the video on MOKB or check out the video on YouTube. The track is also available as a free Mp3 download HERE (feel free to post and share). The video for “A Conversation” is a glimpse of Scattered Trees’ live performances that the band honed playing around Chicago. The group has also announced a series of new dates, including a new SXSW showcase on March 18th at The Ghost Room as a part of The NAIL/The MuseBox SXSW Day Party.

The band’s upcoming performances lead up to the release of Scattered Trees’ latest record Sympathy, which will be released on April 5th via Roll Call Records/EMI. The album is a focused, deeply personal collection of songs that finds Scattered Trees experimenting with lush multi-part harmonies, constructing dynamic builds, and exploring the intricacies of love and loss. Opening with “Bury the Floors,” lead singer Nate Eiesland sings “It’s the house that I built you to fall / We started to walk then we stood up to crawl / So bury the floors and burn down the walls / to find ourselves by morning.” Driving rock epics like “Four Days Straight” rub shoulders with melancholic elegies like “Where You Came From.” The album’s title track starts with a stripped-down plaintive mandolin, ultimately fading into a slow-burning orchestral groove. Melting into “Five Minutes,” Scattered Trees continues the build until the track bursts forth. The band rounds out the record with the mournful acoustic closer “On Your Side,” a fitting tribute for a deeply heartfelt and therapeutic album.

Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata Resurrects Lost "Sound of Music"

Fans of the Broadway version of "The Sound of Music" will notice an old favorite on Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata's (BRO) 'The Hills Are Alive' (Canal Records, 3/8). That's because BRO has included "No Way To Stop It," a song that was previously only used in the musical's Broadway production, on the Brooklyn collaborative's bold re-imagining of the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein's score.  Soulful, pointed and tightly orchestrated, "No Way To Stop It" begins slowly and softly before building to an inspirational ballad, giving Carolyn Leonhart room to stretch her crystalline vocals across founder Peter Kiesewalter’s warmly-arranged musical canvas.

One listen to the alternative take explains why the team at the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization has granted BRO unprecedented artistic license, citing their "affection, skill and superb musicianship."

Hear BRO's version of "No Way To Stop It" here.

The Builders & The Butchers: 'Lullaby' Song Premiere

Today The Builders and the Butchers premiered "Lullaby," the first song off their upcoming third album Dead Reckoning, on My Old Kentucky Blog. The urgent, ominous track can now be heard and downloaded here. Dead Reckoning will be released February 22nd, 2011 on Badman Recording Co.

The Builders will also head out on tour in support of friends Murder By Death early next month. The month-long string of dates begins February 1st at Cosmic Charlie's in Lexington, KY, and wraps up February 20th at The Waiting Room in Omaha, NE, and includes a hometown album release show February 15th at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, OR.

Dead Reckoning is a bold and dynamic set of 12 tracks, a raucous musical blend that culls from folk, back porch bluegrass, and unplugged blues. Led by Ryan Sollee's fervent vocals and the big drum sound of the deconstructed kit split between Brandon Hafer and Ray Rude, the album ranges from pounding anti-anthems to more subdued, haunting tracks to gospel-tinged laments. Sollee, writing against the backdrop of the recent downturn, found himself relating to and drawing inspiration from American music of the 1930s. The timeless songs on Dead Reckoning follow suit, weaving gothic stories with common threads like absolute good and evil, addiction, religion, and the father and the son. The album was recorded predominantly live over eight days in Portland with the help of Adam Selzer (The Decemberists, M. Ward, She & Him) and engineer Dylan Magierek (Mark Kozelek, Starfucker, Thao Nguyen), in effort to finally capture the unbridled energy of The Builders' renowned live show.
