Jack Grace Band & Luther Wright and the Wrongs

With a new CD titled Drinking Songs for Lovers, one might be forgiven for believing that Jack Grace should ease up a little. A singer, songwriter and guitarist who has made a career out of following no one’s rules but his own is probably going to keep doing his thing until his liver lays down the law.

He’s earned praise from press and peers, and even a couple of legends. Opening for Jerry Lee Lewis afforded him a quotable anecdote after Lewis, listening to the band’s set backstage at BB Kings in NYC, quipped, “he sounds like that Cash kid, only good.” After Lewis’ set, Jack shook his hand and told him it had been an honor to share the stage with him. Lewis leaned in and said, "I really enjoyed your set."

A consummate live performer, lyricist, singer and guitarist, Jack is at the helm of a powerhouse band that plays kick the can with any musical genre that it stumbles across. Intelligence, humor and unpredictable cross-pollinations of musical categories await. But don’t take our word for it. "If you don't laugh and cry at the same time as Grace and his gracefully loose band navigate their way through such gems as ‘If You're Gonna Raise a Drunk’ and ‘Morning Margaritas,’ you better check your pulse. You might be disgracefully dead." – James Reaney, London Free Press (London, ON)

Luther Wright has been writing, recording and performing music for over 16 years now. In 1994 he joined up with Sarah Harmer to play lead guitar in the Canadian, pop-rock band, "Weeping Tile" (WEA/Atlantic). During the next 5 years of full-on touring and recording Luther and his roots compadres formed the now-renowned, country/punkgrass road daemons, "Luther Wright & The Wrongs".

Known on one hand for their brilliantly executed, country/bluegrass reworking of Pink Floyd’s classic The Wall, Luther and the band have also recorded and released three all-original albums, Hurtin' For Certain (1997), Rogers Waltz (1999), the valentine gone awry, Guitar Pickin' Martyrs (2003), and the recently released, Instrumentality. Also to boot, they made two cds of original childrens music under the guise of Butterfingers.

Melissa Ferrick at the Fox Theatre

Singer/songwriter Melissa Ferrick emerged in 1994 as part of a group of new female alternative singer/songwriters, much in the vein of Liz Phair. Raised in Ipswich, MA, she began singing in coffeehouses after dropping out of college and eventually wound up in Boston. Her major breakthrough arrived one night when she replaced Morrisey's opening act less than an hour before showtime. Ferrick's performance impressed Morrisey, who invited her to open for him during the rest of the tour. The tour earned her a small cult following, as well as a contract with Atlantic Records.

She released her debut album, Massive Blur, in 1994 to good reviews; the critical reception for her stripped-down second album, Willing to Wait, earned even stronger acclaim. Even so, Atlantic dropped her in 1995, prompting Ferrick to go indie by signing with W.A.R.?, a Colorado-based company. She remained with W.A.R.? over the course of several albums -- including Everything I Need, Freedom the concert recording +1 before taking a lesson from fellow songwriter Ani DiFranco and forming her own label, Right On. Capturing her enigmatic stage persona, Ferrick issued Skinnier, Faster, Live at the B.P.C. in early 2001 and followed its release with a studio album named Valentine Heartache.

Releasing albums on her own label proved to be a welcome change of pace, and Ferrick spent the decade issuing a string of studio records and live releases. She also toured regularly, often logging as many as 150 shows per year. After releasing her 14th album, Goodbye Youth, in 2008, Ferrick shifted her focus to the artists who inspired her, resulting in the release of a covers album, Enough About Me, in 2010.

Chuchito Valdes @ Boulder Theater

Born in Havana Cuba, Chuchito Valdes comes from one of the most distinguished musical families in Cuba. He has recorded and performed piano with the world renown Cuban band, Irakere, which he led for 2 years.

An Evening with Hapa @ Boulder Theater

Like the Hawaiian Islands themselves, Hapa's Pan-Polynesian music is an amalgam of influences ranging from ancient genealogical chants to the strummed ballads of Portuguese fisherman, Spanish cowboys, and the inspired melodies and harmonies of the traditional church choirs of the early missionaries. Add to this a dose of American acoustic folk/rock, and you have what has been described as the “most exciting and beautiful contemporary Hawaiian music the world knows!”… (Maui Times).

These disparate ingredients blended together musically in the Pacific emotes the unique flavor of what Hawaii and Hapa music is: “beautiful, fragile, spiritual, powerful”… (L.A. Times). Often encapsulated as the “Sound of Maui”, HAPA’s music evokes a place that many people at different times have referred to as heavenly. Hapa’s self entitled debut cd released in 1993, swept the 1994 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (Hawaii’s equivalent of the Grammy’s), becoming the biggest selling CD by a group or duo in the history of recorded Hawaiian music. The group’s ground breaking music has established them as the most recognized name in Hawaiian music internationally since their debut release, with sold-out shows from Tokyo to New York.

David Grisman Bluegrass Experience @ Boulder Theater

David Grisman is normally associated with the bluegrass wing of country music, but his music owes almost as much to jazz as it does to traditional American folk influences. Because he couldn't think of what to call his unique, highly intricate, harmonically advanced hybrid of acoustic bluegrass, folk, and jazz without leaning toward one idiom or another, he offhandedly decided to call it "dawg music" -- a name which, curiously enough, has stuck. A brilliant mandolinist, with roots deep in the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, Grisman's jazz sensibilities were strong enough to attract the admiration of the HCQ's Stephane Grappelli, who has toured and recorded with Grisman on occasion.

Statewide Emergency @ The Fox Theatre

Statewide Emergency is a rock and roll quartet that plays honest original music with complex melodies and quality musicianship. Although much of the vocals and guitar are rooted in blues and alternative music (The Black Keys, Queens of the Stone Age), the rhythm section is inspired by more straight ahead rock bands such as Led Zeppelin and The Dead Weather leaving more intrigue than doubt about what genre the band plays. One music writer described it as “balls-to-the-wall rock laced with blues and an alternative touch.”

Dierks Bentley @ Boulder Theater

Not so many years ago, he was singing for tips in Second Avenue bars and soaking up country music history at his day job working in the video tape library of the late, great Nashville Network. Today he's among the most successful and relevant country singers in the business. They say Nashville doesn't work like this anymore - that talented strivers with no connections don't stand a chance. But Dierks Bentley proved that Music City's engine still runs and that as a place for education, inspiration and validation, it has no parallel. Critics find him credible. Fans pack his shows. There are precious few new artists recording hits today about whom that can be said. Bentley's kind of country has never been straight-up-the-middle. Instead, the Arizona-native grew up on a potent hybrid of honky-tonk, bluegrass, singer/songwriters, classic country and modern rock & roll, forging his own sound along the way.

The Travelin’ McCourys do not stand still. They are on the road—and online—entertaining audiences with live shows that include some of the best musicians and singers from all genres. It’s always different, always exciting, and always great music. No other band today has the same credentials for playing traditional and progressive music. As the sons of bluegrass legend Del McCoury, Ronnie McCoury on mandolin and Rob McCoury on banjo continue their father’s work—a lifelong dedication to the power of bluegrass music to bring joy into people’s lives. And with fiddler Jason Carter and bassist Alan Bartram, the ensemble is loved and respected by the bluegrass faithful. But the band is now combining their sound with others to make something fresh and rejuvenating. It’s that attitude, backed up by talent, that marks great musicians, traditional or progressive. The Travelin’ McCourys are twenty-first century musical pilgrims and adventurers. They’re onto something new, just like Bill Monroe was in the 1940s, but now we can see and hear that adventure live or online.
